Evidence of a structural quantum critical point in (Ca$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ from a lattice dynamics study

Approaching a quantum critical point (QCP) has been an effective route to stabilize superconductivity. While the role of magnetic QCPs has been extensively discussed, similar exploration of a structural QCP is scarce due to the lack of suitable systems with a continuous structural transition that can be conveniently tuned to 0~K. Using inelastic X-ray scattering, we examine the phonon spectrum of the nonmagnetic quasi-skutterudite (Ca$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$, which represents a precious system to explore the interplay between structural instabilities and superconductivity by tuning the Ca concentration $x$. We unambiguously detect the softening of phonon modes around the M point on cooling towards the structural transition. Intriguingly, at $x=0.85$, the soft mode energy squared at the M point extrapolates to zero at $(-5.7 \pm 7.7)$~K, providing the first compelling microscopic evidence of a structural QCP in (Ca$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$. The enhanced phonon density-of-states at low energy provides the essential ingredient for realizing strong-coupling superconductivity near the structural QCP.

Anisotropic two-gap superconductivity and the absence of a Pauli paramagnetic limit in single-crystalline LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$

Ambient-pressure-grown LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$ with a superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}\sim$3K possesses a highly anisotropic normal state. By a series of electrical resistivity measurements with a magnetic field direction varying between the crystalline $c$-axis and the $ab$-plane, we present the first datasets displaying the temperature dependence of the out-of-plane upper critical field $H_{c2}^{\perp}(T)$, the in-plane upper critical field $H_{c2}^{\parallel}(T)$, as well as the angular dependence of $H_{c2}$ at fixed temperatures for ambient-pressure-grown LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$ single crystals. The anisotropy of the superconductivity, $H_{c2}^{\parallel}/H_{c2}^{\perp}$, reaches $\sim$16 on approaching 0 K, but it decreases significantly near $T_{c}$. A pronounced upward curvature of $H_{c2}^{\parallel}(T)$ is observed near $T_{c}$, which we analyze using a two-gap model. Moreover, $H_{c2}^{\parallel}(0)$ is found to exceed the Pauli paramagnetic limit, which can be understood by considering the strong spin-orbit coupling associated with Bi as well as the breaking of the local inversion symmetry at the electronically active BiS$_2$ bilayers. Hence, LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$ with a centrosymmetric lattice structure is a unique platform to explore the physics associated with local parity violation in the bulk crystal.

Soft phonon modes in the vicinity of the structural quantum critical point

The quasi-skutterudite superconductors $A_3T_4$Sn$_{13}$ ($A$=Sr, Ca; $T$=Ir, Rh, Co) are highly tunable featuring a structural quantum critical point. We construct a temperature-lattice constant phase diagram for these isovalent compounds, establishing Ca$_{3}$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ and Ca$_{3}$Co$_4$Sn$_{13}$ as members close to and far away from the structural quantum critical point, respectively. Deconvolution of the lattice specific heat and the electrical resistivity provide an approximate phonon density of states $F(ω)$ and the electron-phonon transport coupling function $α_{tr}^2F(ω)$ for Ca$_{3}$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ and Ca$_{3}$Co$_4$Sn$_{13}$, enabling us to investigate the influence of the structural quantum critical point. Our results support the scenario of phonon softening close to the structural quantum critical point, and explain the enhancement of the coupling strength on approaching structural instability.

Second-order Structural Transition in Superconductor La$_3$Co$_4$Sn$_{13}$

The quasi-skutterudite superconductor La$_3$Co$_4$Sn$_{13}$ undergoes a phase transition at $T^*=152$ K. By measuring the temperature dependence of heat capacity, electrical resistivity, and the superlattice reflection intensity using X-ray, we explore the character of the phase transition at $T^*$. Our lattice dynamic calculations found imaginary phonon frequencies around the ${\bf M}$ point, when the high temperature structure is used in the calculations, indicating that the structure is unstable at the zero temperature limit. The combined experimental and computational results establish that $T^*$ is associated with a second-order structural transition with $\bf{q}$=(0.5, 0.5, 0) (or the ${\bf M}$ point). Further electronic bandstructure calculations reveal Fermi surface sheets with low curvature segments, which allow us to draw qualitative comparison with both Sr$_3$Ir$_4$Sn$_{13}$ and Sr$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ in which similar physics has been discussed recently.

Anomalous Pressure Dependence of the Superconducting Transition Temperature in TlNi$_2$Se$_{2-x}$S$_x$

We report the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, in TlNi$_2$Se$_{2-x}$S$_x$ detected via the AC susceptibility method. The pressure-temperature phase diagram constructed for TlNi$_{2}$Se$_{2}$, TlNi$_{2}$S$_{2}$ and TlNi$_{2}$SeS exhibits two unexpected features: (a) a sudden collapse of the superconducting state at moderate pressure for all three compositions and (b) a dome-shaped pressure dependence of $T_c$ for TlNi$_{2}$SeS. These results point to the nontrivial role of S substitution and its subtle interplay with applied pressure, as well as novel superconducting properties of the TlNi$_2$Se$_{2-x}$S$_x$ system.
