Easing the Hubble constant tension?

We show how a modified Friedmann equation, originating from a model of the universe built from a certain $W_3$ algebra, has the potential to explain the difference between the Hubble constants extracted from CMB data and from supernova data.

A modified Friedmann equation

We recently formulated a model of the universe based on an underlying W3-symmetry. It allows the creation of the universe from nothing and the creation of baby universes and wormholes for spacetimes of dimension 2, 3, 4, 6 and 10. Here we show that the classical large time and large space limit of these universes is one of exponential fast expansion without the need of a cosmological constant. Under a number of simplifying assumptions our model predicts that w=-1.2 in the case of four-dimensional spacetime. The possibility of obtaining a w-value less than -1 is linked to the ability of our model to create baby universes and wormholes.

CDT and the Big Bang

We describe a CDT-like model where breaking of W3 symmetry will lead to the emergence of time and subsequently of space. Surprisingly the simplest such models which lead to higher dimensional spacetimes are based on the four "magical" Jordan algebras of 3x3 Hermitian matrices with real, complex, quaternion and octonion entries, respectively. The simplest symmetry breaking leads to universes with spacetime dimensions 3, 4, 6, and 10.

A model for emergence of space and time

We study string field theory (third quantization) of the two-dimensional model of quantum geometry called generalized CDT ("causal dynamical triangulations"). Like in standard non-critical string theory the so-called string field Hamiltonian of generalized CDT can be associated with W-algebra generators through the string mode expansion. This allows us to define an "absolute" vacuum. "Physical" vacua appear as coherent states created by vertex operators acting on the absolute vacuum. Each coherent state corresponds to specific values of the coupling constants of generalized CDT. The cosmological "time" only exists relatively to a given "physical" vacuum and comes into existence before space, which is created because the "physical" vacuum is unstable. Thus each CDT "universe" is created as a "Big Bang" from the absolute vacuum, its time evolution is governed by the CDT string field Hamiltonian with given coupling constants, and one can imagine interactions between CDT universes with different coupling constants ("fourth quantization")

Scale-dependent Hausdorff dimensions in 2d gravity

By appropriate scaling of coupling constants a one-parameter family of ensembles of two-dimensional geometries is obtained, which interpolates between the ensembles of (generalized) causal dynamical triangulations and ordinary dynamical triangulations. We study the fractal properties of the associated continuum geometries and identify both global and local Hausdorff dimensions.

New aspects of two-dimensional quantum gravity

Causal dynamical triangulations (CDT) can be used as a regularization of quantum gravity. In two dimensions the theory can be solved anlytically, even before the cut-off is removed and one can study in detail how to take the continuum limit. We show how the CDT theory is related to Euclidean 2d quantum gravity (Liouville quantum gravity), how it can be generalized and how this generalized CDT model has a string field theory representation as well as a matrix model representationof a new kind, and finally how it examplifies the possibility that time in quantum gravity might be the stochastic time related to the branching of space into baby universes.

Proper time is stochastic time in 2d quantum gravity

We show that proper time, when defined in the quantum theory of 2d gravity, becomes identical to the stochastic time associated with the stochastic quantization of space. This observation was first made by Kawai and collaborators in the context of 2d Euclidean quantum gravity, but the relation is even simpler and more transparent in he context of 2d gravity formulated in the framework of CDT (causal dynamical triangulations).

A Causal Alternative for c=0 Strings

We review a recently discovered continuum limit for the one-matrix model which describes "causal" two-dimensional quantum gravity. The behaviour of the quantum geometry in this limit is different from the quantum geometry of Euclidean two-dimensional quantum gravity defined by taking the "standard" continuum limit of the one-matrix model. Geodesic distance and time scale with canonical dimensions in this new limit, contrary to the situation in Euclidean two-dimensional quantum gravity. Remarkably, whenever we compare, the known results of (generalized) causal dynamical triangulations are reproduced exactly by the one-matrix model. We complement previous results by giving a geometrical interpretation of the new model in terms of a generalization of the loop equation of Euclidean dynamical triangulations. In addition, we discuss the time evolution of the quantum geometry.

A new continuum limit of matrix models

We define a new scaling limit of matrix models which can be related to the method of causal dynamical triangulations (CDT) used when investigating two-dimensional quantum gravity. Surprisingly, the new scaling limit of the matrix models is also a matrix model, thus explaining why the recently developed CDT continuum string field theory (arXiv:0802.0719) has a matrix-model representation (arXiv:0804.0252).

A Matrix Model for 2D Quantum Gravity defined by Causal Dynamical Triangulations

A novel continuum theory of two-dimensional quantum gravity, based on a version of Causal Dynamical Triangulations which incorporates topology change, has recently been formulated as a genuine string field theory in zero-dimensional target space (arXiv:0802.0719). Here we show that the Dyson-Schwinger equations of this string field theory are reproduced by a cubic matrix model. This matrix model also appears in the so-called Dijkgraaf-Vafa correspondence if the superpotential there is required to be renormalizable. In the spirit of this model, as well as the original large-N expansion by 't Hooft, we need no special double-scaling limit involving a fine tuning of coupling constants to obtain the continuum quantum-gravitational theory. Our result also implies a matrix model representation of the original, strictly causal quantum gravity model.

Topology change in causal quantum gravity

The role of topology change in a fundamental theory of quantum gravity is still a matter of debate. However, when regarding string theory as two-dimensional quantum gravity, topological fluctuations are essential. Here we present a third quantization of two-dimensional surfaces based on the method of causal dynamical triangulation (CDT). Formally, our construction is similar to the c = 0 non-critical string field theory developed by Ishibashi, Kawai and others, but physically it is quite distinct. Unlike in non-critical string theory the topology change of spatial slices is well controlled and regulated by Newton's constant.

A String Field Theory based on Causal Dynamical Triangulations

We formulate the string field theory in zero-dimensional target space corresponding to the two-dimensional quantum gravity theory defined through Causal Dynamical Triangulations. This third quantization of the quantum gravity theory allows us in principle to calculate the transition amplitudes of processes in which the topology of space changes in time, and to include non-trivial topologies of space-time. We formulate the corresponding Dyson-Schwinger equations and illustrate how they can be solved iteratively.

Recursive sampling simulations of 3D gravity coupled to scalar fermions

We study numerically the phase structure of a model of 3D gravity interacting with scalar fermions. We measure the 3D counterpart of the "string" susceptibility exponent as a function of the inverse Newton coupling $α$. We show that there are two phases separated by a critical point around $α_c \simeq 2$. The numerical results support the hypothesis that the phase structures of 3D and 2D simplicial gravity are qualitatively similar, the inverse Newton coupling in 3D playing the role of the central charge of matter in 2D.

Quantum Geometry and Diffusion

We study the diffusion equation in two-dimensional quantum gravity, and show that the spectral dimension is two despite the fact that the intrinsic Hausdorff dimension of the ensemble of two-dimensional geometries is very different from two. We determine the scaling properties of the quantum gravity averaged diffusion kernel.

The Spectral Dimension of 2D Quantum Gravity

We show that the spectral dimension d_s of two-dimensional quantum gravity coupled to Gaussian fields is two for all values of the central charge c <= 1. The same arguments provide a simple proof of the known result d_s= 4/3 for branched polymers.

Intrinsic Geometric Structure of c=-2 Quantum Gravity

We couple c=-2 matter to 2-dimensional gravity within the framework of dynamical triangulations. We use a very fast algorithm, special to the c=-2 case, in order to test scaling of correlation functions defined in terms of geodesic distance and we determine the fractal dimension d_H with high accuracy. We find d_H=3.58(4), consistent with a prediction coming from the study of diffusion in the context of Liouville theory, and that the quantum space-time possesses the same fractal properties at all distance scales similarly to the case of pure gravity.

The quantum space-time of c=-2 gravity

We study the fractal structure of space-time of two-dimensional quantum gravity coupled to c=-2 conformal matter by means of computer simulations. We find that the intrinsic Hausdorff dimension d_H = 3.58 +/- 0.04. This result supports the conjecture d_H = -2 α_1/α_{-1}, where α_n is the gravitational dressing exponent of a spinless primary field of conformal weight (n+1,n+1), and it disfavours the alternative prediction d_H = 2/|γ|. On the other hand ~ r^{2n} for n>1 with good accuracy, i.e. the boundary length l has an anomalous dimension relative to the area of the surface.
