Ultrabroadband photosensitivity from visible to terahertz at room temperature

Charge-density wave (CDW) is one of the most fundamental quantum phenomena in solids. Different from ordinary metals in which only single particle excitations exist, CDW also has collective excitations and can carry electric current in a collective fashion. Manipulating this collective condensation for applications has long been a goal in the condensed matter and materials community. Here we show that the CDW system of 1T-TaS2 is highly sensitive to light directly from visible down to terahertz, with current responsivities around the order of ~1 AW-1 at room temperature. Our findings open a new avenue for realizing uncooled, ultrabroadband and sensitive photoelectronics continuously down to terahertz spectral range.

Structural and magnetic properties of two branches of the Tripod Kagome Lattice family A$_{2}$RE$_{3}$Sb$_{3}$O$_{14}$ (A = Mg, Zn; RE = Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb)

We present a systematic study of the structural and magnetic properties of two branches of the rare earth Tripod Kagome Lattice (TKL) family A$_{2}$RE$_{3}$Sb$_{3}$O$_{14}$ (A = Mg, Zn; RE = Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb; here, we use abbreviation \textit{A-RE}, as in \textit{MgPr} for Mg$_{2}$Pr$_{3}$Sb$_{3}$O$_{14}$), which complements our previously reported work on \textit{MgDy}, \textit{MgGd}, and \textit{MgEr} \cite{TKL}. The present susceptibility ($χ_{dc}$, $χ_{ac}$) and specific heat measurements reveal various magnetic ground states, including the non-magnetic singlet state for \textit{MgPr}, \textit{ZnPr}; long range orderings (LROs) for \textit{MgGd}, \textit{ZnGd}, \textit{MgNd}, \textit{ZnNd}, and \textit{MgYb}; a long range magnetic charge ordered state for \textit{MgDy}, \textit{ZnDy}, and potentially for \textit{MgHo}; possible spin glass states for \textit{ZnEr}, \textit{ZnHo}; the absence of spin ordering down to 80 mK for \textit{MgEr}, \textit{MgTb}, \textit{ZnTb}, and \textit{ZnYb} compounds. The ground states observed here bear both similarities as well as striking differences from the states found in the parent pyrochlore systems. In particular, while the TKLs display a greater tendency towards LRO, the lack of LRO in \textit{MgHo}, \textit{MgTb} and \textit{ZnTb} can be viewed from the standpoint of a balance among spin-spin interactions, anisotropies and non-Kramers nature of single ion state. While substituting Zn for Mg changes the chemical pressure, and subtly modifies the interaction energies for compounds with larger RE ions, this substitution introduces structural disorder and modifies the ground states for compounds with smaller RE ions (Ho, Er, Yb).

Temperature cooling in quantum dissipation channel and the correspondimg thermal vacuum state

We examine temperature cooling of optical chaotic light in a quantum dissipation channel with the damping parameter k.The way we do it is by introducing its thermal vacuum state which can expose entangling effect between the system and the reservoir. The temperature cooling formula is derived, which depends on the parameter k, by adjusting k one can control temperature.

Physical interpretation of generalized two-mode squeezing operator revealed by virtue of the transformation of entangled state representation

By virtue of the integration method within P-ordered product of operators and the property of entangled state representation, we reveal new physical interpretation of the generalized two-mode squeezing operator (GTSO), and find it be decomposed as the product of free-space propagation operator, single-mode and two-mode squeezing operators, as well as thin lens transformation operator. This docomposition is useful to design of opticl devices for generating various squeezed states of light. Transformation of entangled state representation induced by GTSO is emphasized.

Surface electronic structure and isotropic superconducting gap in (Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$)OHFeSe

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we revealed the surface electronic structure and superconducting gap of (Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$)OHFeSe, an intercalated FeSe-derived superconductor without antiferromagnetic phase or Fe-vacancy order in the FeSe layers, and with a superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) $\sim$ 40 K. We found that (Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$)OH layers dope electrons into FeSe layers. The electronic structure of surface FeSe layers in (Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$)OHFeSe resembles that of Rb$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ except that it only contains half of the carriers due to the polar surface, suggesting similar quasiparticle dynamics between bulk (Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$)OHFeSe and Rb$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$. Superconducting gap is clearly observed below $T_c$, with an isotropic distribution around the electron Fermi surface. Compared with $A_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ (\textit{A}=K, Rb, Cs, Tl/K), the higher $T_c$ in (Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$)OHFeSe might be attributed to higher homogeneity of FeSe layers or to some unknown roles played by the (Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$)OH layers.

Signature of strong spin-orbital coupling in the large non-saturating magnetoresistance material WTe2

We report the detailed electronic structure of WTe$_2$ by high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Unlike the simple one electron plus one hole pocket type of Fermi surface topology reported before, we resolved a rather complicated Fermi surface of WTe$_2$. Specifically, there are totally nine Fermi pockets, including one hole pocket at the Brillouin zone center $Γ$, and two hole pockets and two electron pockets on each side of $Γ$ along the $Γ$-$X$ direction. Remarkably, we have observed circular dichroism in our photoemission spectra, which suggests that the orbital angular momentum exhibits a rich texture at various sections of the Fermi surface. As reported previously for topological insulators and Rashiba systems, such a circular dichroism is a signature for spin-orbital coupling (SOC). This is further confirmed by our density functional theory calculations, where the spin texture is qualitatively reproduced as the conjugate consequence of SOC. Since the backscattering processes are directly involved with the resistivity, our data suggest that the SOC and the related spin and orbital angular momentum textures may be considered in the understanding of the anomalous magnetoresistance of WTe$_2$.

Spin Order and Excitations in Triangular Antiferromagnet La2Ca2MnO7

We report a spin S = 3/2 triangular antiferromagnet with nearest-neighbor coupling J = 0.29 meV in La2Ca2MnO7. A genuinely two-dimensional, three-sublattice order develops below 2.80 K << the Weiss constant (25 K). The spin excitations deviate substantially from linear spin-wave theory, suggesting that magnon breakdown occurs in the material. Such a breakdown has been anticipated in recent theoretical studies, although the excitation spectrum remains to be accounted for.

A possible disk mechanism for the 23d QPO in Mkn~501

Optically thin two-temperature accretion flows may be thermally and viscously stable, but acoustically unstable. Here we propose that the O-mode instability of a cooling-dominated optically thin two-temperature inner disk may explain the 23-day quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) period observed in the TeV and X-ray light curves of Mkn~501 during its 1997 high state. In our model the relativistic jet electrons Compton upscatter the disk soft X-ray photons to TeV energies, so that the instability-driven X-ray periodicity will lead to a corresponding quasi-periodicity in the TeV light curve and produce correlated variability. We analyse the dependence of the instability-driven quasi-periodicity on the mass (M) of the central black hole, the accretion rate ($\rm{\dot{M}}$) and the viscous parameter ($α$) of the inner disk. We show that in the case of Mkn~501 the first two parameters are constrained by various observational results, so that for the instability occurring within a two-temperature disk where $α=0.05-1.0$, the quasi-period is expected to lie within the range of 8 to 100 days, as indeed the case. In particular, for the observed 23-day QPO period our model implies a viscosity coefficient $α\leq 0.28$, a sub-Eddington accretion rate $\dot{M} \simeq 0.02 \dot{M}_{\rm Edd}$ and a transition radius to the outer standard disk of $r_0 \sim 60 r_g$, and predicts a period variation $δP/P \sim 0.23$ due to the motion of the instability region.
