Graphite Under Compression: Shift of Layer Breathing and Shear Modes Frequencies with Interlayer Spacing

Layered materials have huge potential in various applications due to their extraordinary properties. To determine the interlayer interaction (or equivalently the layer spacing under different perturbations) is of critical importance. In this letter, we focus on one of the most prominent layered materials, graphite, and theoretically quantify the relationship between its interlayer spacing and the vibrational frequencies of its layer breathing and shear modes, which are measures of the interlayer interaction. The method used here to determine the interlayer interaction can be further applied to other layered materials.

Ultra-fast magnetization manipulation using single femtosecond light and hot-electrons pulse

Current induced magnetization manipulation is a key issue for spintronic application. Therefore, deterministic switching of the magnetization at the picoseconds timescale with a single electronic pulse represents a major step towards the future developments of ultrafast spintronic. Here, we have studied the ultrafast magnetization dynamics in engineered Gdx[FeCo]1-x based structure to compare the effect of femtosecond laser and hot-electrons pulses. We demonstrate that a single femtosecond hot-electrons pulse allows a deterministic magnetization reversal in either Gd-rich and FeCo-rich alloys similarly to a femtosecond laser pulse. In addition, we show that the limiting factor of such manipulation for perpendicular magnetized films arises from the multi-domain formation due to dipolar interaction. By performing time resolved measurements under various field, we demonstrate that the same magnetization dynamics is observed for both light and hot-electrons excitation and that the full magnetization reversal take place within 5 ps. The energy efficiency of the ultra-fast current induced magnetization manipulation is optimized thanks to the ballistic transport of hot-electrons before reaching the GdFeCo magnetic layer.

Simulating Molecular Spectroscopy with Circuit Quantum Electrodynamics

Spectroscopy is a crucial laboratory technique for understanding quantum systems through their interactions with electromagnetic radiation. Particularly, spectroscopy is capable of revealing the physical structure of molecules, leading to the development of the maser - the forerunner of the laser. However, real-world applications of molecular spectroscopy are mostly confined to equilibrium states, due to computational and technological constraints; a potential breakthrough can be achieved by utilizing the emerging technology of quantum simulation. Here we experimentally demonstrate that a superconducting quantum simulator is capable of generating molecular spectra for both equilibrium and non-equilibrium states, reliably producing the vibronic structure of the molecules. Furthermore, our quantum simulator is applicable not only to molecules with a wide range of electronic-vibronic coupling strength characterized by the Huang-Rhys parameter, but also to molecular spectra not readily accessible under normal laboratory conditions. These results point to a new direction for predicting and understanding molecular spectroscopy, exploiting the power of quantum simulation.

Converting quasiclassical states into arbitrary Fock state superpositions in a superconducting cavity

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a new method to generate arbitrary Fock-state superpositions in a superconducting quantum circuit, where a qubit is dispersively coupled to a microwave cavity mode without the need of fine-frequency tuning. Here the qubit is used to conditionally modulate the probability amplitudes of the Fock state components of a coherent state to those of the desired superposition state, instead of pumping photons one by one into the cavity as in previous schemes. Our method does not require the adjustment of the qubit frequency during the cavity state preparation, and is more robust to noise and accumulation of experimental errors compared to previous ones. Using the method, we experimentally generate high-fidelity phase eigenstates under various Hilbert-space dimensions and squeezed states, which are useful for quantum walk and high-precision measurements.

Absence of magnetic thermal conductivity in the quantum spin liquid candidate YbMgGaO4

We present the ultra-low-temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements on the single crystals of YbMgGaO$_4$, which was recently argued to be a promising candidate for quantum spin liquid (QSL). In the zero magnetic field, a large magnetic contribution of specific heat is observed, and exhibits a power-law temperature dependence ($C_m \sim T^{0.74}$). On the contrary, we do not observed any significant contribution of thermal conductivity from magnetic excitations. In magnetic fields $H \ge$ 6 T, the exponential $T$-dependence of $C_m$ and the enhanced thermal conductivity indicate a magnon gap of the fully-polarized state. The absence of magnetic thermal conductivity at the zero field in this QSL candidate puts a strong constraint on the theories of its ground state.

Powerful Radio Emission From Low-mass Supermassive Black Holes Favors Disk-like Bulges

The origin of spin of low-mass supermassive black hole (SMBH) is still a puzzle at present. We here report a study on the host galaxies of a sample of radio-selected nearby ($z<0.05$) Seyfert 2 galaxies with a BH mass of $10^{6-7} M_\odot$. By modeling the SDSS $r$-band images of these galaxies through a 2-dimensional bulge+disk decomposition, we identify a new dependence of SMBH's radio power on host bulge surface brightness profile, in which more powerful radio emission comes from a SMBH associated with a more disk-like bulge. This result means low-mass and high-mass SMBHs are spun up by two entirely different modes that correspond to two different evolutionary paths. A low-mass SMBH is spun up by a gas accretion with significant disk-like rotational dynamics of the host galaxy in the secular evolution, while a high-mass one by a BH-BH merger in the merger evolution.

Constraints on Axion couplings from the CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

We report the results of searches for solar axions and galactic dark matter axions or axion-like particles with CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, using 335.6 kg-days of data from a p-type point-contact germanium detector. The data are compatible with the background model and no excess signals are observed. Limits of solar axions on the model independent coupling $g_{Ae}<2.5\times10^{-11}$ from Compton, bremsstrahlung, atomic-recombination and deexcitation channel and $g^{\text{eff}}_{AN}\times g_{Ae}<6.1\times10^{-17}$ from $^{57}$Fe M1 transition at 90 % confidence level are derived. Within the framework of the DFSZ and KSVZ models, our results exclude the axion mass heavier than 0.9 eV/c$^{2}$ and 173 eV/c$^{2}$, respectively. The derived constraints for dark matter axions below 1 keV improves over the previous results.

Fully gapped superconducting state in Au2Pb: a natural candidate for topological superconductor

We measured the ultra-low-temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity of Au$_2$Pb single crystal, a possible three-dimensional Dirac semimetal with a superconducting transition temperature $T_c \approx$ 1.05 K. The electronic specific heat can be fitted by a two-band s-wave model, which gives the gap amplitudes $Δ_1$(0)/$k_BT_c$ = 1.38 and $Δ_2$(0)/$k_BT_c$ = 5.25. From the thermal conductivity measurements, a negligible residual linear term $κ_0/T$ in zero field and a slow field dependence of $κ_0/T$ at low field are obtained. These results suggest that Au$_2$Pb has a fully gapped superconducting state in the bulk, which is a necessary condition for topological superconductor if Au$_2$Pb is indeed one.

Characterization and Performance of Germanium Detectors with sub-keV Sensitivities for Neutrino and Dark Matter Experiments

Germanium ionization detectors with sensitivities as low as 100 eVee (electron-equivalent energy) open new windows for studies on neutrino and dark matter physics. The relevant physics subjects are summarized. The detectors have to measure physics signals whose amplitude is comparable to that of pedestal electronic noise. To fully exploit this new detector technique, various experimental issues including quenching factors, energy reconstruction and calibration, signal triggering and selection as well as evaluation of their associated efficiencies have to be attended. The efforts and results of a research program to address these challenges are presented.

A two-fold quantum delayed-choice experiment in a superconducting circuit

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a two-fold quantum delayed-choice experiment where wave or particle nature of a superconducting interfering device can be post-selected twice after the interferometer. The wave-particle complementarity is controlled by a quantum which-path detector (WPD) in a superposition of its on and off states implemented through a superconducting cavity. The WPD projected to its on state records which-path information, which manifests the particle nature and destroys the interference associated with wave nature of the system. In our experiment, we can recover the interference signal through a quantum eraser even if the WPD has selected out the particle nature in the first round of delayed-choice detection, showing that a quantum WPD adds further unprecedented controllability to test of wave-particle complementarity through the peculiar quantum delayed-choice measurements.

Ammonia and CO Outflow around 6.7 GHz Methanol Masers

Single point observations are presented in NH3 (1,1) and (2,2) inversion transitions using the Effelsberg 100 m telescope for a sample of 100 6.7 GHz methanol masers and mapping observations in the 12CO and 13CO (1-0) transitions using the PMO Delingha 13.7 m telescope for 82 sample sources with detected ammonia. A further 62 sources were selected for either 12CO or 13CO line outflow identification, producing 45 outflow candidates, 29 using 12CO and 16 using 13CO data. Twenty-two of the outflow candidates were newly identified, and 23 had trigonometric parallax distances. Physical properties were derived from ammonia lines and CO outflow parameters calculated. Histograms and statistical correlations for ammonia, CO outflow parameters, and 6.7 GHz methanol maser luminosities are also presented. No significant correlation was found between ammonia and maser luminosity. However, weak correlations were found between outflow properties and maser luminosities, which may indicate that outflows are physically associated with 6.7 GHz masers.

Nodal superconductivity in FeS: Evidence from quasiparticle heat transport

We report low-temperature heat transport measurements on superconducting iron sulfide FeS with $T_c \approx$ 5 K, which has the same crystal structure and similar electronic band structure to the superconducting iron selenide FeSe. In zero magnetic field, a significant residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is observed. At low field, $κ_0/T$ increases rapidly with the increase of field. These results provide strong evidence for nodal superconducting gap in FeS. We compare it with the sister compound FeSe, and other iron-based superconductors with nodal gap.

Observation of two distinct superconducting domes under pressure in tetragonal FeS

As the simplest iron-based superconductor, FeSe forms a tetragonal structure with transition temperature Tc ~ 8 K. With assistance of pressure, or other techniques, Tc can be greatly enhanced, even to above liquid nitrogen temperature. The newly discovered superconducting tetragonal FeS (Tc ~ 4.5 K), a sulfide counterpart of FeSe, promotes us on its high pressure investigation. The transport and structure evolution of FeS with pressure have been studied. A rapid suppression of Tc and vanishing of superconductivity at 4.0 GPa are observed, followed by a second superconducting dome with a 30% enhancement in maximum Tc. An onsite tetragonal to hexagonal phase transition occurs around 7.0 GPa, followed by a broad pressure range of phase coexistence. The residual deformed tetragonal phase is considered as the source of second superconducting dome. The observation of two superconducting domes in iron-based superconductors poses great challenges for understanding their pairing mechanism.

A geometric-Structure Theory for maximally Random Jammed Packings

Maximally random jammed (MRJ) particle packings can be viewed as prototypical glasses in that they are maximally disordered while simultaneously being mechanically rigid. The prediction of the MRJ packing density phi, among other packing properties of frictionless particles, still poses many theoretical challenges, even for congruent spheres or disks. Using the geometric-structure approach, we derive for the first time a highly accurate formula for MRJ densities for a very wide class of twodimensional frictionless packings, namely, binary convex superdisks, with shapes that continuously interpolate between circles and squares.

Bulk Fermi surface of charge-neutral excitations in SmB6 or not: a heat-transport study

Recently there have been increasingly hot debates on whether a bulk Fermi surface of charge-neutral excitations exists in the topological Kondo insulator SmB6. To unambiguously resolve this issue, we performed the low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements of a high-quality SmB6 single crystal down to 0.1 K and up to 14.5 T. Our experiments show that the residual linear term of thermal conductivity at zero field is zero, within the experimental accuracy. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity is insensitive to magnetic field up to 14.5 T. These results exclude the existence of fermionic charge-neutral excitations in bulk SmB6, such as scalar Majorana fermions or spinons, thus put a strong constraint on the explanation of the quantum oscillations observed in SmB6.

Molecular clouds and star formation toward the Galactic plane within 216.25$^{\rm o}\le$ l $\le$218.75$^{\rm o}$ and $-$0.75$^{\rm o} \le$ b $\le$1.25$^{\rm o}$

As a part of the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) survey, we performed a simultaneous 12CO(1-0), 13CO(1-0), C18O(1-0) mapping toward molecular clouds in a region encompassing 3.75 square degrees. We reveal three molecular clouds, the 15 km/s cloud, the 27 km/s cloud, and the 50 km/s cloud, in the surveyed region. The 50 km/s cloud is resolved with an angular resolution of around 1' for the first time. Investigating their morphology and velocity structures, we find that the 27 km/s cloud is likely affected by feedback from the stellar association Mon OB3 and the 50 km/s cloud is characterised by three large expanding molecular shells. The region is mapped in C18O (1-0) for the first time. We discover seven C18O clumps, which are likely to form massive stars, and 15 dust clumps based on the BGPS archival data. Using infrared color-color diagrams, we find 56 Class I and 107 Class II young stellar object (YSO) candidates. According to the distribution of YSO candidates, an overdensity is found around the HII region S287 and the intersection of two shells, indicative of triggering. The star formation efficiency and rate of the 27~km/s cloud are discussed. Comparing the observed values of the filament S287-main with the models of fragmentation, we suggest that turbulence controls the large scale of fragmentation in the filament while gravitational fragmentation plays an important role in the formation of YSOs on the small scale. We find that star-forming gas tends to have higher excitation temperature, higher 13CO opacity, and higher column density than non-star-forming gas, which is consistent with the point that star formation happens in denser gas and star-forming gas is heated by YSOs. Using the 1.1 mm dust emission to trace dense gas, we obtain a dense gas fraction of 2.7%-10.4% for the 27 km/s cloud.

A Search of Low-Mass WIMPs with p-type Point Contact Germanium Detector in the CDEX-1 Experiment

The CDEX-1 experiment conducted a search of low-mass (< 10 GeV/c2) Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) dark matter at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory using a p-type point-contact germanium detector with a fiducial mass of 915 g at a physics analysis threshold of 475 eVee. We report the hardware set-up, detector characterization, data acquisition and analysis procedures of this experiment. No excess of unidentified events are observed after subtraction of known background. Using 335.6 kg-days of data, exclusion constraints on the WIMP-nucleon spin-independent and spin-dependent couplings are derived.

The Effects of Superhigh Magnetic Fields on Equations of States of Neutron Stars

By introducing Dirac ?-function in superhigh magnetic field, we deduce a general formula for pressure of degenerate and relativistic electrons, Pe, which is suitable for superhigh magnetic fields, discuss the quantization of Landau levels of electrons, and consider the quantum electrodynamic(QED) effects on the equations of states (EOSs) for different matter systems. The main conclusions are as follows: the stronger the magnetic field strength, the higher the electron pressure becomes; compared with a common radio pulsar, a magnetar could be a more compact oblate spheroid-like deformed neutron star due to the anisotropic total pressure; and an increase in the maximum mass of a magnetar is expected because of the positive contribution of the magnetic field energy to the EOS of the star. Since this is an original work in which some uncertainties could exist, to further modify and perfect our theory model should be considered in our future studies.
