Topologically nontrivial $1/3$-magnetization plateau state in a spin-1/2 trimer chain

Topologically nontrivial Haldane phase is theoretically proposed to be realized in the 1/3-magnetization ($M$) plateau of spin-1/2 trimer systems. However, the spin excitation gap, typical characteristic of Haldane phase, is not yet experimentally verified. Here, we report the nuclear magnetic resonance investigations into the low-energy spin dynamics in the $S=1/2$ spin-trimer antiferromagnetic chain compound Na$_2$Cu$_3$Ge$_{4-x}$Si$_{x}$O$_{12}$ ($x=0, 0.1\sim1.5$). In the parent compound ($x=0$), the spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/$T_1$) shows significantly different temperature dependence when the external magnetic field is increased above the critical field of $μ_0$$H_{c}$ = 29 T. The spin excitation gap is evidenced from the thermally activated behavior of $1/T_1(T)$ in the 1/3-$M$ plateau state. By substituting Ge$^{4+}$ with Si$^{4+}$, the critical field for the 1/3-$M$ plateau significantly decreases, e.g. $μ_0H_{c}=17$ T in $x=1.0$ samples, which results from the suppressed inter-trimer coupling $J_2$. The gapped spin excitation is confirmed again above 17 T, whose size shows temperature-dependent behavior for $μ_0H\geq25.72$ T. These observations provide further insights into the Haldane physics.

High-field NMR study of the spin correlations in the spin-cluster mineral Na$_2$Cu$_3$O(SO$_4$)$_3$

We report NMR study on the spin correlations in the spin-cluster based mineral Na$_2$Cu$_3$O(SO$_4$)$_3$ with magnetic fields ranged from 1 T to 33 T. The long-range magnetic order is observed from both the sudden spectral broadening at $T_N$ and critical slowing down behavior in the temperature dependence of spin-lattice relaxation rates ($1/T_1(T)$). The hump behavior of $1/T_1(T)$ persists to $μ_0H=7.25$ T, above which a spin excitation gap is observed from the thermally activated temperature dependence of $1/T_1$. The gap size shows a linear field dependence, whose slope and intercept respectively yield an effective magnetic moment of 2.54 $μ_B$ and a 0.94 meV spin excitation gap under zero magnetic field. These results indicate the existence of short-range order and prominent easy-plane spin anisotropy, which are important for understanding the spin excitation spectrum in A$_2$Cu$_3$O(SO$_4$)$_3$.

Absence of long-range order in an $XY$ pyrochlore antiferromagnet Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$

Rare-earth pyrochlores are known to exhibit exotic magnetic phenomena. We report a study of crystal growth and characterizations of a new rare-earth compound Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$, in which Al$^{3+}$ and Sb$^{5+}$ ions share the same positions with a random distribution. The magnetism are studied by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements at low temperatures down to several tens of milli-kelvin. Different from the other reported Er-based pyrochlores exhibiting distinct magnetically ordered states, a spin-freezing transition is detected in Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$ below 0.37 K, which is primarily ascribed to the inherent structural disorder. A cluster spin-glass state is proposed in view of the frequency dependence of the peak position in the ac susceptibility. In addition, the temperature and field dependence of thermal conductivity indicates rather strong spin fluctuations which is probably due to the phase competition.

Origin of planar Hall effect in type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2

Besides the negative longitudinal magnetoresistance (MR), planar Hall effect (PHE) is a newly emerging experimental tool to test the chiral anomaly or nontrivial Berry curvature in Weyl semimetals (WSMs). However, the origins of PHE in various systems are not fully distinguished and understood. Here we perform a systematic study on the PHE and anisotropic MR (AMR) of Td-MoTe2, a type-II WSM. Although the PHE and AMR curves can be well fitted by the theoretical formulas, we demonstrate that the anisotropic resistivity arises from the orbital MR (OMR), instead of the negative MR as expected in the chiral anomaly effect. In contrast, the absence of negative MR indicates that the large OMR dominates over the chiral anomaly effect. This explains why it is difficult to measure negative MR in type-II WSMs. We argue that the measured PHE can be related with the chiral anomaly only when the negative MR is simultaneously observed.

Topological semimetal state and field-induced Fermi surface reconstruction in antiferromagnetic monopnictide NdSb

We report the experimental realization of Dirac semimetal state in NdSb, a material with antiferromagnetic ground state. The occurrence of topological semimetal state has been well supported by our band structure calculations and the experimental observation of chiral anomaly induced negative magnetoresistance. A field-induced Fermi surface reconstruction is observed, in response to the change of spin polarization. The observation of topological semimetal state in a magnetic material provides an opportunity to investigate the magneto-topological phenomena.

Field Driven Quantum Criticality in the Spinel Magnet ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$

We report detailed dc and ac magnetic susceptibilities, specific heat, and thermal conductivity measurements on the frustrated magnet ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$. At low temperatures, with increasing magnetic field, this spinel material goes through a series of spin state transitions from the helix spin state to the spiral spin state and then to the fully polarized state. Our results indicate a direct quantum phase transition from the spiral spin state to the fully polarized state. As the system approaches the quantum criticality, we find strong quantum fluctuations of the spins with the behaviors such as an unconventional $T^2$-dependent specific heat and temperature independent mean free path for the thermal transport. We complete the full phase diagram of ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$ under the external magnetic field and propose the possibility of frustrated quantum criticality with extended densities of critical modes to account for the unusual low-energy excitations in the vicinity of the criticality. Our results reveal that ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$ is a rare example of 3D magnet exhibiting a field-driven quantum criticality with unconventional properties.

The origin of the turn-on phenomenon in Td-MoTe2

We did the resistivity and scanning tunneling microscope/spectroscopy (STM/STS) experiments at different temperatures and magnetic fields to investigate the origin of the turn-on (t-o) phenomenon of Td-MoTe2. There are two interesting observations. Firstly, magnetoresistance (MR) follows the Kohler rule scaling: MR - (H/p0)m with m - 1.92 and the t-o temperature T under different magnetic fields can also be scaled by T - (H-Hc)u with u = 1/2. Secondly, a combination of compensated electron-hole pockets and a possible electronic structure phase transition induced by the temperature have been validated in Td-MoTe2 by the STM/STS experiments. Compared with the STS of Td-MoTe2 single crystal under H = 0, the STS hardly changes even when the applied field is up to 7 T. The origins of the t-o phenomenon in Td-MoTe2 are discussed. Meanwhile, we analyzed the universality and applicability of the t-o phenomenon in the extreme MR materials with almost balanced hole and electron densities as well as with other systems where the density of hole or electron is in dominant position.

Anomalous Hall effect in two-dimensional non-collinear antiferromagnetic semiconductor Cr0.68Se

Cr0.68Se single crystals with two-dimensional (2D) character have been grown, and the detailed magnetization M(T), electrical transport properties (including longitudinal resistivity and Hall resistivity and thermal transport ones (including heat capacity Cp(T) and thermoelectric power (TEP) S(T)) have been measured. There are some interesting phenomena: (i) Cr0.68Se presents a non-collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconducting behavior with the Neel temperature TN = 42 K and the activated energy Eg=3.9 meV; (ii) It exhibits the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) below TN and large negative magnetoresistance (MR) about 83.7% (2 K, 8.5 T). The AHE coefficient RS is 0.385 cm-3/C at T=2 K and the AHE conductivity σH is about 1 ohm-1cm-1 at T=40 K, respectively; (iii) The scaling behavior between the anomalous Hall resistivity and the longitudinal resistivity is linear and further analysis implies that the origin of the AHE in Cr0.68Se is dominated by the skew-scattering mechanism. Our results may be helpful for exploring the potential application of these kind of 2D AFM semiconductors.

The extremely large magnetoresistance in the Candidate Type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2

We performed the angle dependent magnetoresistance (MR), Hall effect measurements, the temperature dependent magneto-thermoelectric power (TEP) S(T) measurements, and the first-principles calculations to study the electronic properties of orthorhombic phase MoTe2 (Td-MoTe2), which was proposed to be electronically two-dimensional (2D). There are some interesting findings about Td-MoTe2: (1) A scaling approach εθ=(sin2θ+γ-2cos2θ)1/2 is applied, where θ is the magnetic field angle with respect to the c axis of the crystal and γ is the mass anisotropy. Unexpectedly, the electronically 3D character with γ as low as 1.9 is observed in Td-MoTe2; (2) The possible Lifshitz transition and the following electronic structure change can be verified around T~150 K and T~60 K, which is supported by the evidence of the slop changing of the temperature dependence of TEP, the carrier density extracted from Hall resistivity and the onset temperature of γ obtained from the MR measurements. The extremely large MR effect in Td-MoTe2 could originate from the combination of the electron-hole compensation and a particular orbital texture on the electron pocket, which is supported by the calculations of electronic structure. Our results may provide a general scaling relation for the anisotropic MR and help to recognize the origins of the MR effect in other systems, such as the Weyl semimetals and the Dirac ones.

1T`-MoTe2 single crystal: a possible topological superconductor

We measured the magnetoresistvity (MR) properties of the 1T`-MoTe2 single crystal under the magnetic field up to 33 T.By analyzing the Shubnikov de Haas oscillations of MR at the low temperature, single Fermi surface is revealed. From the strong oscillatory component of the longitudinal resistance ΔRxx,a linear dependence of the Landau index n on 1/B is obtained. The intercept of the Landau index plot is between 3/8 and 1/2.This clearly reveals a nontrivial π Berry`s phase, which is a distinguished feature of Dirac fermions. Accompanied by the superconductivity observed at TC=0.1 K, 1T`-MoTe2 may be a promising candidate of the topological superconductor.

Superconductivity in CaSn3 single crystal with a AuCu3-type structure

We report the superconductivity of the CaSn3 single crystal with a AuCu3-type structure, namely cubic space group Pm3m. The superconducting transition temperature TC=4.2 K is determined by the magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and heat capacity measurements. The magnetization versus magnetic field (M-H) curve at low temperatures shows the typical-II superconducting behavior. The estimated lower and upper critical fields are about 125 Oe and 1.79 T, respectively. The penetration depth λ(0) and coherence length ξ(0) are calculated to be approximately 1147 nm and 136 nm by the Ginzburg-Landau equations. The estimated Sommerfeld coefficient of the normal state γ_N is about 2.9 mJ/mol K2. ΔC/γNTC =1.13 and λep=0.65 suggest that CaSn3 single crystal is a weakly coupled superconductor. Electronic band structure calculations show a complex multi-sheet Fermi surface formed by three bands and a low density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level, which is consistent with the experimental results. Based on the analysis of electron phonon coupling of AX3 compounds (A=Ca, La, and Y; X=Sn and Pb), we theoretically proposed a way to increase TC in the system.

State Estimation for Genetic Regulatory Networks with Time-Varying Delays and Reaction-Diffusion Terms

This paper is concerned with the state estimation problem for genetic regulatory networks with time-varying delays and reaction-diffusion terms under Dirichlet boundary conditions. It is assumed that the nonlinear regulation function is of the Hill form. The purpose of this paper is to design a state observer to estimate the concentrations of mRNA and protein through available measurement outputs. By introducing new integral terms in a novel Lyapunov--Krasovskii functional and employing Wirtinger-based integral inequality, Wirtinger's inequality, Green's identity, convex combination approach, and reciprocally convex combination approach, an asymptotic stability criterion of the error system is established in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). The obtained stability criterion depends on the upper bounds of the delays and their derivatives. It should be highlight that if the set of LMIs are feasible, the desired observer exists and can be determined. Finally, two numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed designed scheme.
