Investigation of the ground-state spin inversion in the neutron-rich 47,49Cl isotopes

A first gamma-ray study of 47,49Cl spectroscopy was performed at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory with 50Ar projectiles at 217 MeV/nucleon, impinging on the liquid hydrogen target of the MINOS device. Prompt de-excitation gamma-rays were measured with the NaI(Tl) array DALI2+. Through the one-proton knockout reaction 50Ar(p,2p), a spin assignment could be determined for the low-lying states of 49Cl from the momentum distribution obtained with the SAMURAI spectrometer. A spin-parity J = 3/2+ is deduced for the ground state of 49Cl, similar to the recently studied N = 32 isotope 51K.

Robust atomic orbital in the cluster magnet LiMoO2

In this study, we present a rutile-related material, LiMoO2, that becomes a cluster magnet and exhibits a spin singlet formation on a preformed molybdenum dimer upon cooling. Unlike ordinary cluster magnets, the atomic dyz orbital robustly survives despite the formation of molecular orbitals, thereby affecting the magnetic properties of the selected material. Such hybrid cluster magnets with the characters of molecular and atomic orbitals realize multiple independent spins on an isolated cluster, leading to an ideal platform to study the isolated spin dimers physics.

Temperature-dependent local structure of superconducting BaPd$_2$As$_2$ and SrPd$_2$As$_2$

The local structures of 122-type paradium arsenides, namely BaPd$_2$As$_2$ and SrPd$_2$As$_2$, are examined by As K-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements to find a possible correlation between the variation of their superconducting transition temperature and the local structure. The local atomic distances are found to be consistent with average distances measured by diffraction techniques. The temperature dependence of mean square relative displacements reveal that, while BaPd$_2$As$_2$ is characterized by a local As-Pd soft mode, albeit with larger atomic disorder, SrPd$_2$As$_2$ shows anomalous As-Pd correlations with a kink at $\sim$160 K due to hardening by raising temperature. We have discussed implications of these results and possible mechanism of differing superconducting transition temperature in relation with the structural instability.

Population gradient in Sextans dSph: Comprehensive mapping of a dwarf galaxy by Suprime-Cam

We present the deep and wide $V$ and $I_c$ photometry of the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) taken by Suprime-Cam imager on the Subaru Telescope, which extends out to the tidal radius. The colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) reaches two magnitudes below the main sequence (MS) turn-off, showing a steep red giant branch, blue and red horizontal branch (HB), sub-giant branch (SGB), MS, and blue stragglers (BS). We construct the radial profile of each evolutionary phase and demonstrate that blue HB stars are more spatially extended, while red HB stars are more centrally concentrated than the other components. The colour distribution of SGB stars also varies with the galactocentric distance; the inner SGB stars shift bluer than those in the outskirt. The radial differences in the CMD morphology indicate the existence of the age gradient. The relatively younger stars ($\sim10$ Gyr) are more centrally concentrated than the older ones ($\sim13$ Gyr). The spatial contour maps of stars in different age bins also show that the younger population has higher concentration and higher ellipticity than the older one. We also detect the centrally concentrated bright BS stars, the number of which is consistent with the idea that a part of these stars belongs to the remnant of a disrupted star cluster discovered in the previous spectroscopic studies.

Proton-proton correlations in distinguishing the two-proton emission mechanism of $^{23}$Al and $^{22}$Mg

The proton-proton momentum correlation functions ($C_{pp}(q)$) for kinematically complete decay channels of $^{23}$Al $\rightarrow$ p + p + $^{21}$Na and $^{22}$Mg $\rightarrow$ p + p + $^{20}$Ne have been measured at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory. From the very different correlation strength of $C_{pp}(q)$ for $^{23}$Al and $^{22}$Mg, the source size and emission time information were extracted from the $C_{pp}(q)$ data by assuming a Gaussian source profile in the correlation function calculation code (CRAB). The results indicated that the mechanism of two-proton emission from $^{23}$Al was mainly sequential emission, while that of $^{22}$Mg was mainly three-body simultaneous emission. By combining our earlier results of the two-proton relative momentum and the opening angle, it is pointed out that the mechanism of two-proton emission could be distinguished clearly.

The ages, metallicities and element abundance ratios of massive quenched galaxies at z~1.6

We investigate the stellar population properties of a sample of 24 massive quenched galaxies at $1.25<z_\mathrm{spec}<2.09$ identified in the COSMOS field with our Subaru/MOIRCS near-IR spectroscopic observations. Tracing the stellar population properties as close to their major formation epoch as possible, we try to put constraints on the star formation history, post-quenching evolution, and possible progenitor star-forming populations for such massive quenched galaxies. By using a set of Lick absorption line indices on a rest-frame optical composite spectrum, the average age, metallicity [Z/H], and $α$-to-iron element abundance ratio [$α$/Fe] are derived as $\log(\mathrm{age}/\mathrm{Gyr})=0.04_{-0.08}^{+0.10}$, $\mathrm{[Z/H]}=0.24_{-0.14}^{+0.20}$, and $[α/\mathrm{Fe}]=0.31_{-0.12}^{+0.12}$, respectively. If our sample of quenched galaxies at $\langle z \rangle = 1.6$ is evolved passively to $z=0$, their stellar population properties will align in excellent agreement with local counterparts at similar stellar velocity dispersions, which qualifies them as progenitors of local massive early-type galaxies. Redshift evolution of stellar population ages in quenched galaxies combined with low redshift measurements from the literature suggests a formation redshift of $z_\mathrm{f} \sim 2.3$ around which the bulk of stars in these galaxies have been formed. The measured [$α$/Fe] value indicates a star formation timescale of $\lesssim 1$ Gyr, which can be translated into a specific star formation rate of $\simeq 1\,\mathrm{Gyr}^{-1}$ prior to quenching. Based on these findings, we discuss identifying possible progenitor star-forming galaxies at $z \simeq 2.3$. We identify normal star-forming galaxies, i.e, those on the star-forming main sequence, followed by a rapid quenching event, as likely precursors of the quenched galaxies at $\langle z \rangle = 1.6$ presented here.

Different mechanism of two-proton emission from proton-rich nuclei $^{23}$Al and $^{22}$Mg

Two-proton relative momentum ($q_{pp}$) and opening angle ($θ_{pp}$) distributions from the three-body decay of two excited proton-rich nuclei, namely $^{23}$Al $\rightarrow$ p + p + $^{21}$Na and $^{22}$Mg $\rightarrow$ p + p + $^{20}$Ne, have been measured with the projectile fragment separator (RIPS) at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory. An evident peak at $q_{pp}\sim20$ MeV/c as well as a peak in $θ_{pp}$ around 30$^\circ$ are seen in the two-proton break-up channel from a highly-excited $^{22}$Mg. In contrast, such peaks are absent for the $^{23}$Al case. It is concluded that the two-proton emission mechanism of excited $^{22}$Mg is quite different from the $^{23}$Al case, with the former having a favorable diproton emission component at a highly excited state and the latter dominated by the sequential decay process.

Development and operational experience of magnetic horn system for T2K experiment

A magnetic horn system to be operated at a pulsed current of 320 kA and to survive high-power proton beam operation at 750 kW was developed for the T2K experiment. The first set of T2K magnetic horns was operated for over 12 million pulses during the four years of operation from 2010 to 2013, under a maximum beam power of 230 kW, and $6.63\times10^{20}$ protons were exposed to the production target. No significant damage was observed throughout this period. This successful operation of the T2K magnetic horns led to the discovery of the $ν_μ\rightarrowν_e$ oscillation phenomenon in 2013 by the T2K experiment. In this paper, details of the design, construction, and operation experience of the T2K magnetic horns are described.

Contrasting chemical pressure effect on the moment direction in the Kondo semiconductor CeT$_2$Al$_{10}$ (T = Ru,Os)

The opening of a spin gap in the orthorhombic compounds CeT$_2$Al$_{10}$ (T = Ru and Os) is followed by antiferromagnetic ordering at $T_N$ = 27 K and 28.5 K, respectively, with a small ordered moment (0.29$-$0.34$μ_B$) along the $c-$axis, which is not an easy axis of the crystal field (CEF). In order to investigate how the moment direction and the spin gap energy change with 10\% La doping in Ce$_{1-x}$La$_x$T$_2$Al$_{10}$ (T = Ru and Os) and also to understand the microscopic nature of the magnetic ground state, we here report on magnetic, transport, and thermal properties, neutron diffraction (ND) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) investigations on these compounds. Our INS study reveals the persistence of spin gaps of 7 meV and 10 meV in the 10\% La-doped T = Ru and Os compounds, respectively. More interestingly our ND study shows a very small ordered moment of 0.18 $μ_B$ along the $b-$axis (moment direction changed compared with the undoped compound), in Ce$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$Ru$_2$Al$_{10}$, however a moment of 0.23 $μ_B$ still along the $c-$axis in Ce$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$Os$_2$Al$_{10}$. This contrasting behavior can be explained by a different degree of hybridization in CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ and CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$, being stronger in the latter than in the former. Muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) studies on Ce$_{1-x}$La$_x$Ru$_2$Al$_{10}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7), reveal the presence of coherent frequency oscillations indicating a long$-$range magnetically ordered ground state for $x$ = 0 to 0.5, but an almost temperature independent Kubo$-$Toyabe response between 45 mK and 4 K for $x$ = 0.7. We will compare the results of the present investigations with those reported on the electron and hole$-$doping in CeT$_2$Al$_{10}$.

Measurement of the muon beam direction and muon flux for the T2K neutrino experiment

The Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) neutrino experiment measures neutrino oscillations by using an almost pure muon neutrino beam produced at the J-PARC accelerator facility. The T2K muon monitor was installed to measure the direction and stability of the muon beam which is produced together with the muon neutrino beam. The systematic error in the muon beam direction measurement was estimated, using data and MC simulation, to be 0.28 mrad. During beam operation, the proton beam has been controlled using measurements from the muon monitor and the direction of the neutrino beam has been tuned to within 0.3 mrad with respect to the designed beam-axis. In order to understand the muon beam properties,measurement of the absolute muon yield at the muon monitor was conducted with an emulsion detector. The number of muon tracks was measured to be $(4.06\pm0.05)\times10^4$ cm$^{-2}$ normalized with $4\times10^{11}$ protons on target with 250 kA horn operation. The result is in agreement with the prediction which is corrected based on hadron production data.

Deep near-infrared spectroscopy of passively evolving galaxies at z>1.4

[Abridged] We present the results of new near-IR spectroscopic observations of passive galaxies at z>1.4 in a concentration of BzK-selected galaxies in the COSMOS field. The observations have been conducted with Subaru/MOIRCS, and have resulted in absorption lines and/or continuum detection for 18 out of 34 objects. This allows us to measure spectroscopic redshifts for a sample almost complete to K(AB)=21. COSMOS photometric redshifts are found in fair agreement overall with the spectroscopic redshifts, with a standard deviation of ~0.05; however, ~30% of objects have photometric redshifts systematically underestimated by up to ~25%. We show that these systematic offsets in photometric redshifts can be removed by using these objects as a training set. All galaxies fall in four distinct redshift spikes at z=1.43, 1.53, 1.67 and 1.82, with this latter one including 7 galaxies. SED fits to broad-band fluxes indicate stellar masses in the range of ~4-40x10^10Msun and that star formation was quenched ~1 Gyr before the cosmic epoch at which they are observed. The spectra of several individual galaxies have allowed us to measure their Hdelta_F and Dn4000 indices, which confirms their identification as passive galaxies, as does a composite spectrum resulting from the coaddition of 17 individual spectra. The effective radii of the galaxies have been measured on the HST/ACS F814W image, confirming the coexistence at these redshifts of passive galaxies which are substantially more compact than their local counterparts with others that follow the local size-stellar mass relation. For the galaxy with best S/N spectrum we were able to measure a velocity dispersion of 270+/-105 km/s, indicating that this galaxy lies closely on the virial relation given its stellar mass and effective radius.

Ferromagnetism of cobalt-doped anatase TiO$_2$ studied by bulk- and surface-sensitive soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

We have studied magnetism in anatase Ti$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O$_{2-δ}$ ({\it x} = 0.05) thin films with various electron carrier densities, by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Co $L_{2,3}$ absorption edges. For electrically conducting samples, the magnetic moment estimated by XMCD was $<$ 0.3 $μ_B$/Co using the surface-sensitive total electron yield (TEY) mode, while it was 0.3-2.4 $μ_B$/Co using the bulk-sensitive total fluorescence yield (TFY) mode. The latter value is in the same range as the saturation magnetization 0.6-2.1 $μ_B$/Co deduced by SQUID measurement. The magnetization and the XMCD intensity increased with carrier density, consistent with the carrier-induced origin of the ferromagnetism.

Hindered proton collectivity in 28S: Possible magic number at Z=16

The reduced transition probability B(E2;0 ->2+) for 28S was obtained experimentally using Coulomb excitation at 53 MeV/nucleon. The resultant B(E2) value 181(31) e2fm4 is smaller than the expectation based on empirical B(E2) systematics. The double ratio |M_n/M_p|/(N/Z) of the 0+ ->2+ transition in 28S was determined to be 1.9(2) by evaluating the M_n value from the known B(E2) value of the mirror nucleus 28Mg, showing the hindrance of proton collectivity relative to that of neutrons. These results indicate the emergence of the magic number Z=16 in the |T_z|=2 nucleus 28S.

Observation of thundercloud-related gamma rays and neutrons in Tibet

During the 2010 rainy season in Yangbajing (4300 m above sea level) in Tibet, China, a long-duration count enhancement associated with thunderclouds was detected by a solar neutron telescope and neutron monitors installed at the Yangbajing Comic Ray Observatory. The event, lasting for $\sim$40 min, was observed on July 22, 2010. The solar neutron telescope detected significant $γ$-ray signals with energies $>$40 MeV in the event. Such a prolonged high-energy event has never been observed in association with thunderclouds, clearly suggesting that electron acceleration lasts for 40 min in thunderclouds. In addition, Monte Carlo simulations showed that $>$10-MeV $γ$ rays largely contribute to the neutron monitor signals, while $>$1-keV neutrons produced via a photonuclear reaction contribute relatively less to the signals. This result suggests that enhancements of neutron monitors during thunderstorms are not necessarily a clear evidence for neutron production, as previously thought.

Relocation of the topological surface state of Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ beneath the surface by Ag intercalation

We studied the Ag-intercalated 3D topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, combined with a first principles calculations. We demonstrate that silver atoms deposited on the surface of Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ are intercalated between the quintuple layer (QL) units of the crystal, causing a expansion of the van der Waals gaps and the detachment of topmost QLs from the bulk crystal. This leads to a relocation (in the real space) of the the topological state beneath the detached quintuple layers, accompanied by the emergence of parabolic and "M-shaped" trivial bands localized above the relocated topological states. These novel findings open a pathway to the engineering of Dirac fermions shielded from the ambient contamination and may facilitate the realization of fault-tolerant quantum devices.

Surface Scattering via Bulk Continuum States in the 3D Topological Insulator Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$

We have performed scanning tunneling microscopy and differential tunneling conductance ($dI/dV$) mapping for the surface of the three dimensional topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$. The fast Fourier transformation applied to the $dI/dV$ image shows an electron interference pattern near Dirac node despite the general belief that the backscattering is well suppressed in the bulk energy gap region. The comparison of the present experimental result with theoretical surface and bulk band structures shows that the electron interference occurs through the scattering between the surface states near the Dirac node and the bulk continuum states.

A z=1.82 Analog of Local Ultra-massive Elliptical Galaxies

We present observations of a very massive galaxy at z=1.82 which show that its morphology, size, velocity dispersion and stellar population properties that are fully consistent with those expected for passively evolving progenitors of today's giant ellipticals. These findings are based on a deep optical rest-frame spectrum obtained with the Multi-Object InfraRed Camera and Spectrograph (MOIRCS) on the Subaru telescope of a high-z passive galaxy candidate (pBzK) from the COSMOS field, for which we accurately measure its redshift of z=1.8230 and obtain an upper limit on its velocity dispersion sigma_star<326 km/s. By detailed stellar population modeling of both the galaxy broad-band SED and the rest-frame optical spectrum we derive a star-formation-weighted age and formation redshift of t_sf~1-2 Gyr and z_form~2.5-4, and a stellar mass of M_star~(3-4)x10^{11} M_sun. This is in agreement with a virial mass limit of M_vir<7x10^{11}M_sun, derived from the measured sigma_star value and stellar half-light radius, as well as with the dynamical mass limit based on the Jeans equations. In contrast with previously reported super-dense passive galaxies at z~2, the present galaxy at z=1.82 appears to have both size and velocity dispersion similar to early-type galaxies in the local Universe with similar stellar mass. This suggests that z~2 massive and passive galaxies may exhibit a wide range of properties, then possibly following quite different evolutionary histories from z~2 to z=0.

Electric transport properties of YBCO bicrystal films with 45o misorientation angle grown by liquid phase epitaxy

We report on transport properties of grain boundaries fabricated in YBa2Cu3O7-x thin films grown by the liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) technique on MgO asymmetrical bicrystal substrate with 45o misorientation angle. In total around 10 samples have been studied. Substantial scatter of zero field values of the critical current density at 5K has been observed. The upper limit of Jc of the order of 104 A/cm2 found in our study is close to previously reported data for 45o bicrystals grown by various physical vapour deposition methods while the minimal value of Jc for the LPE grown bicrystals in striking difference to the results published before is exactly equal to zero. For samples with non-zero Jc we have found a few different types of critical current dependence on magnetic field ranging from pattern reminiscent Fraunhover-like Ic(H) to Ic(H) profile with Ic minimum at zero field.
