Influence of cumulenic chains on the vibrational and electronic properties of sp/sp2 amorphous carbon

We report the production and characterization of a form of amorphous carbon films with sp/sp2 hybridization (atomic fraction of sp hybridized species > 20%) where the predominant sp bonding appears to be (=C=C=)n cumulene. Vibrational and electronic properties have been studied by in situ Raman spectroscopy and electrical conductivity measurements. Cumulenic chains are substantially stable for temperatures lower than 250 K and they influence the electrical transport properties of the sp/sp2 carbon through a self-doping mechanism by pinning the Fermi level closer to one of the mobility gap edges. Upon heating above 250 K the cumulenic species decay to form graphitic nanodomains embedded in the sp2 amorphous matrix thus reducing the activation energy of the material. This is the first example of a pure carbon system where the sp hybridization influences bulk properties.

Discovery of a Featureless X-Ray Spectrum in the Supernova Remnant Shell of G330.2+1.0

We report here on the first pointed X-ray observation of the supernova remnant (SNR) G330.2+1.0. The X-ray morphology is characterized by an extended shell. Its X-ray spectrum is well represented by a single power-law function with a photon index of $γ\simeq 2.8$ and interstellar absorption of $n_{\rm H}\simeq2.6\times 10^{22}$[cm$^{-2}$]. We interpret this emission as synchrotron radiation from accelerated electrons at the SNR shock, as seen in SN 1006. The surface brightness of the X-ray emission is anti-correlated with the radio emission, and the power-law spectrum is dominated at the western shell where the radio emission is weak. The co-existence of two distinct (radio bright/X-ray faint and radio faint/X-ray bright) shells in a single supernova remnant challenges our understanding of the particle acceleration and radiation mechanisms in different interstellar environments. The object may be a good target for searching TeV gamma-rays and molecular gas surrounding the blast shock. We also report on the nature of a bright point-like source (AX J1601-5143) to the south of the SNR.

Ring Exchange Mechanism for Triplet Superconductivity in a Two-Chain Hubbard Model: Possible Relevance to Bechgaard Salts

The density-matrix renormalization group method is used to study the ground state of the two-chain zigzag-bond Hubbard model at quarter filling. We show that, with a proper choice of the signs of hopping integrals, the ring exchange mechanism yields ferromagnetic spin correlations between interchain neighboring sites, and produces the attractive interaction between electrons as well as the long-range pair correlations in the spin-triplet channel, thereby leading the system to triplet superconductivity. We argue that this novel mechanism may have possible relevance to observed superconductivity in Bechgaard salts.

A Hadron Blind Detector for the PHENIX Experiment at RHIC

A Hadron Blind Detector (HBD) is being developed for the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. It consists of a Cherenkov radiator operated with pure CF4 directly coupled in a windowless configuration to a triple-GEM detector element with a CsI photocathode and pad readout. The HBD operates in the bandwidth 6-11.5 eV(110-200 nm). We studied the detector response to minimum ionizing particles and to electrons. We present measurements of the CsI quantum efficiency, which are in very good agreement with previously published results over the bandwidth 6-8.3 eV and extend them up to 10.3 eV. Discharge probability andaging studies of the GEMs and the CsI photocathode in pure CF4 are presented.

An intrinsic peak-dip-hump and strong coupling effects in $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}$ ARPES data near $(π,0)$

A well-known peak-dip-hump structure exists near $(π, 0)$ in superconducting state ARPES spectra of $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212). Here we report results on optimal and overdoped Bi2212 samples indicating the traditional peak-dip-hump structure observed near $(π,0)$ is largely due to bilayer splitting. However a separate, much weaker peak-dip hump (PDH) structure distinct from bilayer splitting can be detected near $(π, 0)$. This new PDH structure is consistent with electronic coupling to the magnetic resonance mode in Bi2212. Both the dispersion and line shape signatures indicate strong coupling to this mode.

Mass-renormalized electronic excitations at ($π$, 0) in the superconducting state of $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}$

Using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}$, we have made the first observation of a mass renormalization or "kink" in the E vs. $\vec k$ dispersion relation localized near $(π, 0)$. Compared to the kink observed along the nodal direction, this new effect is clearly stronger, appears at a lower energy near 40 meV, and is only present in the superconducting state. The kink energy scale defines a cutoff below which well-defined quasiparticle excitations occur. This effect is likely due to coupling to a bosonic excitation, with the most plausible candidate being the magnetic resonance mode observed in inelastic neutron scattering.

A re-examination of the electronic structure of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+d} and Bi_2Sr_2Cu_1O_{6+d} - An electron-like Fermi Surface and the absence of flat bands at $E_F$

We present a re-examination of the electronic structure and Fermi Surface (FS) of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (BSCCO) as obtained from angle-resolved photoemission experiments. By applying a stricter set of FS crossing criteria as well as by varying the incident photon energy outside the usual range, we have found very different behavior from that previously observed. In particular we have found an electron-like FS centered around the Gamma point, and the flat bands at E_F near the M point of the zone are absent. These results are robust over a large range of dopings and from single to double layer samples.
