Frequency drifts of 3-min oscillations in microwave and EUV emission above sunspots

We analyse 3-min oscillations of microwave and EUV emission generated at different heights of a sunspot atmosphere, studying the amplitude and frequency modulation of the oscillations, and its relationship with the variation of the spatial structure of the oscillations. High-resolution data obtained with the Nobeyama Radioheliograph, TRACE and SDO/AIA are analysed with the use of the Pixelised Wavelet Filtering and wavelet skeleton techniques. 3-min oscillations in sunspots appear in the form of repetitive trains of the duration 8-20 min (13 min in average). The typical interval between the trains is 30-50 min. The oscillation trains are transient in frequency and power. We detected a repetitive frequency drifts of 3-min oscillations during the development of individual trains. Wavelet analysis shows three types of the frequency drift: positive, negative and fluctuations without drift. The start and end of the drifts coincide with the start time and end of the train. The comparative study of 3-min oscillations in the sequences of microwave and EUV images show the appearance of new sources of the oscillations in sunspots during the development of the trains. These structures can be interpreted as waveguides that channel upward propagating waves, responsible for 3-min oscillations. A possible explanation of the observed properties is the operation of two simultaneous factors: dispersive evolution of the upwardly-propagating wave pulses and the non-uniformity of the distribution of the oscillation power over the sunspot umbra with different wave sources corresponding to different magnetic flux tubes with different physical conditions and line-of-sight angles.

Radioheliograph observations of microwave bursts with zebra structures

The so-called zebra structures in radio dynamic spectra, specifically their frequencies and frequency drifts of emission stripes, contain information on the plasma parameters in the coronal part of flare loops. This paper presents observations of zebra structures in a microwave range. Dynamic spectra were recorded by Chinese spectro-polarimeters in the frequency band close to the working frequencies of the Siberian Solar Radio Telescope. The emission sources are localized in the flare regions, and we are able to estimate the plasma parameters in the generation sites using X-ray data. The interpretation of the zebra structures in terms of the existing theories is discussed. The conclusion has been arrived that the preferred generation mechanism of zebra structures in the microwave range is the conversion of plasma waves to electromagnetic emission on the double plasma resonance surfaces distributed across a flare loop.

phi-meson production in proton-antiproton annihilation

Apparent channel-dependent violations of the OZI rule in nucleon-antinucleon annihilation reactions are discussed in the presence of an intrinsic strangeness component in the nucleon. Admixture of strange-antistrange quark pairs in the nucleon wave function enables the direct coupling to the phi-meson in the annihilation channel without violating the OZI rule. Three forms are considered in this work for the strangeness content of the proton wave function, namely, the uud cluster with a strange-antistrange sea quark component, kaon-hyperon clusters based on a simple chiral quark model, and the pentaquark picture. Nonrelativistic quark model calculations reveal that the strangeness magnetic moment and the strangeness contribution to the proton spin from the first two models are consistent with recent experimental data. For the third model, the uuds subsystem with the configurations FS[31]F[211]S[22] and FS[31]F[31]S[22] leads to negative values for the strangeness magnetic moment and the strangeness contribution to the proton spin. With effective quark line diagrams incorporating the 3P0 quark model we give estimates for the branching ratios of the proton-antiproton annihilation reactions at rest to two mesons. Results for the branching ratios of phi-meson production from atomic proton-antiproton s-wave states are for the first and third model found to be strongly channel dependent, in good agreement with measured rates.

The emission positions of kHz QPOs and Kerr spacetime influence

Based the Alfven wave oscillation model (AWOM) and relativistic precession model (RPM) for twin kHz QPOs, we estimate the emission positions of most detected kHz QPOs to be at r=18+-3 km (R/15km) except Cir X-1 at r = 30\+-5 km (R/15km). For the proposed Keplerian frequency as an upper limit to kHz QPO, the spin effects in Kerr Spacetime are discussed, which have about a 5% (2%) modification for that of the Schwarzchild case for the spin frequency of 1000 (400) Hz.The application to the four typical QPO sources, Cir X-1, Sco X-1, SAX J1808.4-3658 and XTE 1807-294, is mentioned.

Electron-Positron to Nucleon-Antinucleon Pair at Threshold and Proton Form Factor

The reactions of electron-positron to nucleon-antinucleon pair at energy threshold are studied in a non-perturbative quark model. The puzzling experimental result that the ratio of the cross section of electron-positron to proton-antiproton to the one of electron-positron to neutron-antineutron is smaller than 1 can be understood in the framework of the phenomenological nonrelativistic quark model and the theoretical predictions for the time-like proton form factor at energy threshold are well consistent with the experimental data. The work suggests that the two-step process, in which the primary quark-antiquark pair forms first a vector meson which in turn decays into a hadron pair, is dominant over the one-step process in which the primary quark-antiquark pair is directly dressed by additional quark-antiquark pairs to form a hadron pair. The experimental data on the reactions of electron-positron to nucleon-antinucleon strongly suggest the reported vector meson omega(1930) to be a 2D-wave particle, while the vector meson rho(2000) is preferred to be a mixture of 3S and 2D states.

Kaonic hydrogen atom and kaon-proton scattering length

Kaonic hydrogen is studied with various realistic potentials in an accurate numerical approach based on Sturmian functions. The kaon-proton scattering length extracted from the 1s energy shift of the kaonic hydrogen by applying the Deser-Trueman formula is severely inconsistent with the one derived by directly solving the scattering Schoedinger equation. We pay special attention to the recent measurement of the energy shift and decay width of the 1s kaonic hydrogen state by the DEAR Collaboration. After taking into account the large discrepancy between the extracted and directly-evaluated scattering lengths, we found theoretical predictions of most chiral SU(3) based models for the kaonic hydrogen decay width are consistent with the DEAR data. We warn the SIDDHARTA collaboration that it may not be reasonable to extract kaon-nucleon scattering lengths, by using the Coulomb-interaction corrected Deser-Truemab formula, from the planned measurement of kaonic hydrogen.

Reaction of electron-positron to omega and pi mesons and rho(1450) and rho(1700) mesons in quark model

The investigation in the work of the reaction electron-positron to omega and pi0 mesons in the 3P0 nonrelativistic quark model reveals that the reaction electron-positron to omega and pi0 mesons process at the energy region from the omega and pi mesons threshold to 2.0 GeV is dominated by the two-step process in which the primary quark-antiquark pair first forms rho and rho' mesons and then the vector mesons decay into omega and pi. With rho(1450) and rho(1700) mainly in 2S and 1D states respectively, the experimental data for the cross section of the reaction electron-positron to omega and pi0 mesons are well produced in the 3P0 quark model. The work supports the argument that rho(1450) is mainly a 2S meson and rho(1700) a 1D meson.

Timing observations of RRAT J1819-1458 at Urumqi Observatory

We report the timing-analysis results obtained for RRAT J1819-1458 from regular timing observations at 1.54 GHz using the Urumqi 25 m radio telescope between 2007 April to 2008 March. RRAT J1819-1458 is a relatively young and highly magnetized neutron star discovered by its sporadic short bursts in the Parkes Multibeam Pulsar Survey data. In 94 hrs of observation data, we detected a total of 162 dispersed bursts of RRAT J1819-1458 with the signal-to-noise ratios (S/Ns) above 5-$σ$ threshold. Among them, 5 bursts clearly show two-component structure. The S/N of the strongest burst is 13.3. The source's DM measured through our data is 196.0 $\pm$0.4 pc cm$^{-3}$. The timing position, frequency and its first derivative were determined using standard pulsar timing techniques on the arrival times of these individual bursts. The accuracy of the solved rotating parameters are improved comparing with that in previous publication. Our timing position with 2-$σ$ error is consistent with the position of its X-ray counterpart CXOU J181934.1-145804. The effect of timing noise and the phase fluctuation of the individual short bursts on the timing residuals is briefly discussed. The distribution of the timing residuals is bimodal, which cannot be explained readily by timing irregularity.

Antiproton-deuteron atoms in models of realistic potentials

The antiproton-deuteron atoms are studied in models of various realistic, popular nucleon-antinucleon potentials. The small energy shifts and decay widths of the atoms, which stem from the short-ranged strong interactions between the antiproton and deuteron, are evaluated in a well-established, accurate approach based on the Sturmian functions. The investigation reveals that none of the employed potentials, which reproduce the nucleon-antinucleon scattering data quite well, is able to reproduce the experimental data of the energy shifts of the 2p antiproton-deuteron atomic states. The energy shifts of the 2p antiproton-deuteron atomic states are very sensitive to the nucleon-antinucleon strong interactions, hence the investigation of the antiproton-deuteron atoms is expected to provide a good platform for refining the nucleon-antinucleon interaction, especially at zero energy.

Bottom Baryon Decays in Non-relativistic Quark Model

The reactions $Σ_b^* \to Λ_b π$, $Σ_b \to Λ_b π$, and $Ξ_b^* \to Ξ_b π$ are studied in the $^3P_0$ non-relativistic quark model with all the model parameters fixed in the sector of light quarks. The theoretical predictions for the decay widths $Γ_{Σ_b^* \to Λ_b π}$ and $Γ_{Σ_b \to Λ_b π}$ are consistent with the experimental data of the CDF Collaboration. Using as an input the recent mass of $Ξ_b$ and the theoretical predictions mass of $Ξ_b^{*}$, a narrow decay width about 1 MeV is predicted for the bottom baryon $Ξ_b^*$. The work suggests that the $^3P_0$ quark dynamics is of independence of environments where heavy quarks may or may not be a component of baryons.

Dimerization-induced enhancement of the spin gap in the quarter-filled two-leg rectangular ladder

We report density-matrix renormalization group calculations of spin gaps in the quarter-filled correlated two-leg rectangular ladder with bond-dimerization along the legs of the ladder. In the small rung-coupling region, dimerization along the leg bonds can lead to large enhancement of the spin gap. Electron-electron interactions further enhance the spin gap, which is nonzero for all values of the rung electron hopping and for arbitrarily small bond-dimerization. Very large spin gaps, as are found experimentally in quarter-filled band organic charge-transfer solids with coupled pairs of quasi-one-dimensional stacks, however, occur within the model only for large dimerization and rung electron hopping that are nearly equal to the hopping along the legs. Coexistence of charge order and spin gap is also possible within the model for not too large intersite Coulomb interaction.

Density matrix renormalization group study of conjugated polymers with transverse pi-conjugation

We report accurate numerical studies of excited state orderings in long hypothetical pi-conjugated oligomers in which the hydrogen atoms of trans-polyacetylene are replaced with conjugated sidegroups, within modified Hubbard models. There exists a range of the bare Coulomb repulsion for which the excited state ordering is conducive to photoluminescence in the substituted systems, even as this ordering is opposite in the unsubstituted polyenes of the same lengths. Our work provides motivation to study real pi-conjugated polymers with transverse conjugation and small optical gaps.

Electron-Positron Annihilation into Hadron-Antihadron Pairs

The reactions of electron-positron to nucleon-antinucleon pairs are studied in a non-perturbative quark model. To reproduce the experimental data of the reactions of electron-positron to proton-antiproton and electron-positron to neutron-antineutron a D-wave omega-like vector meson with a mass of around 2 GeV has to be introduced.

Axial form factor of the nucleon in the perturbative chiral quark model

We apply the perturbative chiral quark model (PCQM) at one loop to analyze the axial form factor of the nucleon. This chiral quark model is based on an effective Lagrangian, where baryons are described by relativistic valence quarks and a perturbative cloud of Goldstone bosons as dictated by chiral symmetry. We apply the formalism to obtain analytical expressions for the axial form factor of the nucleon, which is given in terms of fundamental parameters of low-energy pion-nucleon physics (weak pion decay constant, strong pion-nucleon form factor) and of only one model parameter (radius of the nucleonic three-quark core).

Electromagnetic form factors of the baryon octet in the perturbative chiral quark model

We apply the perturbative chiral quark model at one loop to analyze the electromagnetic form factors of the baryon octet. The analytic expressions for baryon form factors, which are given in terms of fundamental parameters of low-energy pion-nucleon physics (weak pion decay constant, axial nucleon coupling, strong pion-nucleon form factor), and the numerical results for baryon magnetic moments, charge and magnetic radii are presented. Our results are in good agreement with experimental data.

On an Estimation of the Coronal Magnetic Field Strength from Spectrographic Observations in the Microwave Range

Observations of the solar radio emission in the microwave frequency range show fine structures consisting of a number of the almost parallel narrow frequency bands. We interpret these bands as the cyclotron harmonics plasma emission. This emission is generated by the anisotropic electron beam, which excites longitudinal waves on the normal Doppler effect resonance. Then the longitudinal waves convert into the radio emission on the second harmonic of the longitudinal waves frequency and sometimes into the fundamental one. Estimations of the magnetic field strength made on the basis of such a model give the values of the magnetic field in the microwave burst sources as ~ 100-200 G. The estimations of density variations are also given.

Upgrade of the PEP-II Low Beta Optics

The successful commissioning and operation of the PEP-II asymmetric e+e- collider motivated further studies to increase luminosity. In this paper, we discuss a modification of the PEP-II lattice to reduce the vertical beta function at the Interaction Point (IP) from the design value of 1.5cm to 1.0cm. This could potentially reduce the colliding beam size, increase particle density at the IP and the probability of beam-beam interactions. In this paper, we outline the optics modifications, discuss tracking simulations, and overview machine implementation.
