A JWST Medium Resolution MIRI Spectrum and Models of the Type Ia supernova 2021aefx at +415 d

We present a JWST MIRI/MRS spectrum (5-27 $\mathrmμ$m) of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia), SN 2021aefx at $+415$ days past $B$-band maximum. The spectrum, which was obtained during the iron-dominated nebular phase, has been analyzed in combination with previous JWST observations of SN 2021aefx, to provide the first JWST time series analysis of an SN Ia. We find the temporal evolution of the [Co III] 11.888 $\mathrmμ$m feature directly traces the decay of $^{56}$Co. The spectra, line profiles, and their evolution are analyzed with off-center delayed-detonation models. Best fits were obtained with White Dwarf (WD) central densities of $ρ_c=0.9-1.1\times 10^9$g cm$^{-3}$, a WD mass of M$_{\mathrm{WD}}$=1.33-1.35M$_\odot$, a WD magnetic field of $\approx10^6$G, and an off-center deflagration-to-detonation transition at $\approx$ 0.5 $M_\odot$ seen opposite to the line of sight of the observer (-30). The inner electron capture core is dominated by energy deposition from $γ$-rays whereas a broader region is dominated by positron deposition, placing SN 2021aefx at +415 d in the transitional phase of the evolution to the positron-dominated regime. The formerly `flat-tilted' profile at 9 $\mathrmμ$m now has significant contribution from [Ni IV], [Fe II], and [Fe III] and less from [Ar III], which alters the shape of the feature as positrons excite mostly the low-velocity Ar. Overall, the strength of the stable Ni features in the spectrum is dominated by positron transport rather than the Ni mass. Based on multi-dimensional models, our analysis is consistent with a single-spot, close-to-central ignition with an indication for a pre-existing turbulent velocity field, and excludes a multiple-spot, off-center ignition.

Charm total cross sections with nonuniversal fragmentation treatment

Total charm-pair cross sections in $pp$ collisions are interesting because they can be calculated to NNLO in QCD without any reference to fragmentation effects. On the other hand, the fiducial differential charm cross sections from which the total cross sections must be extrapolated are currently known to NLO+NLL at most (e.g. FONLL), and must be treated for known effects of nonuniversal charm fragmentation. A new procedure using the FONLL framework as input for an empirical parametrization of the data in both shape and normalization, with all its parameters actually fitted to data, is used to derive so-called data-driven FONLL (ddFONLL) parametrizations which can be used to extrapolate the differential cross sections to total cross sections with minimal bias. This includes an empirical treatment of all known non-universal charm fragmentation effects, in particular for the baryon-to-meson ratio as a function of transverse momentum. The total charm-pair cross sections obtained in this way, which supersede all previous ones obtained using the assumption of charm-fragmentation universality, are consistent with NNLO predictions, and allow first studies of their sensitivity e.g. to the charm-quark mass and/or the NNLO gluon PDF at very low transverse momentum fractions $x$.

Billiards in polyhedra: a method to convert 2-dimensional uniformity to 3-dimensional uniformity

The class of 2-dimensional non-integrable flat dynamical systems has a rather extensive literature with many deep results, but the methods developed for this type of problems, both the traditional approach via Teichmüller geometry and our recent shortline-ancestor method, appear to be exclusively plane-specific. Thus we know very little of any real significance concerning 3-dimensional systems. Our purpose here is to describe some very limited extensions of uniformity in 2 dimensions to uniformity in 3 dimensions. We consider a 3-manifold which is the cartesian product of the regular octagonal surface with the unit torus. This is a restricted system, in the sense that one of the directions is integrable. However, this restriction also allows us to make use of a transference theorem for arithmetic progressions established earlier by Beck, Donders and Yang.

A note on the Kronecker--Weyl equidistribution theorem

We study the relationship between the discrete and the continuous versions of the Kronecker--Weyl equidistribution theorem, as well as their possible extension to manifolds in higher dimensions. We also investigate a way to deduce in some limited way uniformity results in higher dimension from results in lower dimension.

Irreversible and dissipative systems

We study some new dynamical systems where the corresponding piecewise linear flow is neither time reversible nor measure preserving. We create a dissipative system by starting with a finite polysquare translation surface, and then modifying it by including a one-sided barrier on a common vertical edge of two adjacent atomic squares, in the form of a union of finitely many intervals. The line flow in this system partitions the system into a transient set and a recurrent set. We are interested in the geometry of these two sets.

Nonequilibrium carrier and phonon dynamics in the ferrimagnetic semiconductor Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$

We investigate the ultrafast carrier and phonon dynamics in the ferrimagnetic semiconductor Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$ using time-resolved optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Our results reveal that the electron-phonon thermalization process with a subpicosecond timescale is prolonged by the hot-phonon bottleneck effect. We identify the subsequent relaxation processes associated with two non-radiative recombination mechanisms, i.e., phonon-assisted electron-hole recombination and defect-related Shockley-Read-Hall recombination. Temperature-dependent measurements indicate that all three relaxation components show large variation around 175 and 78 K, which is related to the initiation of spin fluctuation and ferrimagnetic order in Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$. In addition, two pronounced coherent optical phonons are observed, in which the phonon with a frequency of 3.7 THz is attributed to the $A_{1g}$ mode of Te precipitates. Applying the strain pulse propagation model to the coherent acoustic phonons yields a penetration depth of 506 nm and a sound speed of 2.42 km/s in Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$. Our results develop understanding of the nonequilibrium properties of the ferrimagnetic semiconductor Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$, and also shed light on its potential applications in optoelectronic and spintronic devices.

Uniformity of geodesic flow in non-integrable 3-manifolds

Almost nothing is known concerning the extension of $3$-dimensional Kronecker--Weyl equidistribution theorem on geodesic flow from the unit torus $[0,1)^3$ to non-integrable finite polycube translation $3$-manifolds. In the special case when a finite polycube translation $3$-manifold is the cartesian product of a finite polysquare translation surface with the unit torus $[0,1)$, we have developed a splitting method with which we can make some progress. This is a somewhat restricted system, in the sense that one of the directions is integrable. We then combine this with a split-covering argument to extend our results to some other finite polycube translation $3$-manifolds which satisfy a rather special condition and where none of the $3$ directions is integrable.

A note on density of geodesics

We extend the famous result of Katok and Zemlyakov on the density of half-infinite geodesics on finite flat rational surfaces to half-infinite geodesics on a finite polycube translation $3$-manifold. We also extend this original result to establish a weak uniformity statement.

Anomalous terahertz photoconductivity caused by the superballistic flow of hydrodynamic electrons in graphene

Light incident upon materials can induce changes in their electrical conductivity, a phenomenon referred to as photoresistance. In semiconductors, the photoresistance is negative, as light-induced promotion of electrons across the band gap enhances the number of charge carriers participating in transport. In superconductors, the photoresistance is positive because of the destruction of the superconducting state, whereas in normal metals it is vanishing. Here we report a qualitative deviation from the standard behavior in metallic graphene. We show that Dirac electrons exposed to continuous wave (CW) terahertz (THz) radiation can be thermally decoupled from the lattice by 50~K which activates hydrodynamic electron transport. In this regime, the resistance of graphene constrictions experiences a decrease caused by the THz-driven superballistic flow of correlated electrons. We analyze the dependencies of the negative photoresistance on the carrier density, and the radiation power and show that our superballistic devices operate as sensitive phonon-cooled bolometers and can thus offer a picosecond-scale response time. Beyond their fundamental implications, our findings underscore the practicality of electron hydrodynamics in designing ultra-fast THz sensors and electron thermometers.

Resolving the explosion of supernova 2023ixf in Messier 101 within its complex circumstellar environment

Observing a supernova explosion shortly after it occurs can reveal important information about the physics of stellar explosions and the nature of the progenitor stars of supernovae (SNe). When a star with a well-defined edge explodes in vacuum, the first photons to escape from its surface appear as a brief shock-breakout flare. The duration of this flare can extend to at most a few hours even for nonspherical breakouts from supergiant stars, after which the explosion ejecta should expand and cool. Alternatively, for stars exploding within a distribution of sufficiently dense optically thick circumstellar material, the first photons escape from the material beyond the stellar edge, and the duration of the initial flare can extend to several days, during which the escaping emission indicates photospheric heating. The difficulty in detecting SN explosions promptly after the event has so far limited data regarding supergiant stellar explosions mostly to serendipitous observations that, owing to the lack of ultraviolet (UV) data, were unable to determine whether the early emission is heating or cooling, and hence the nature of the early explosion event. Here, we report observations of SN 2023ixf in the nearby galaxy M101, covering the early days of the event. Using UV spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) as well as a comprehensive set of additional multiwavelength observations, we trace the photometric and spectroscopic evolution of the event and are able to temporally resolve the emergence and evolution of the SN emission.

Physics mechanisms of fines detachment and migration during CO2-water corefloods

One of the key risks for a Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) is injectivity decline. Evaporation of the connate brine in near-wellbore region during CO2 injection may result in drying-up the rock yielding the mobilisation and migration of clay particles leading to decline rock permeability and consequent loss of well injectivity. Influx of the reservoir brine into the dried-up zone yields accumulation of precipitated salt and injectivity decline. This paper presents the results of eight coreflooding experiments aiming investigation of the effect of rock dry-out, fines migration, and salt precipitation during CO2 injection. Pressure drops across the cores, brine saturation and produced clay fines concentration versus Pore Volume Injected (PVI) have been measured. All lab tests exhibit the following features: intensive fines production at the very beginning of gas-water production period following reduced-rate fines production during overall evaporation period and continuous fines disappearance at the late stage; abrupt increase in gas permeability in the middle of evaporation, and non-monotonic evaporation rate and pressure drop. To explain these phenomena, we distinguished three sequential regimes of fines detachment during two-phase displacement: (i) moving gas-water menisci; (ii) pendular rings of residual water; (iii) dry flux, and found that for the conditions of our corefloods, detachment is possible in regime (i) only. Fines production during overall evaporation period is explained by simultaneous occurrence of three regimes during unstable displacement of water by gas in micro-heterogeneous rock.

Final Moments II: Observational Properties and Physical Modeling of CSM-Interacting Type II Supernovae

We present ultraviolet/optical/near-infrared observations and modeling of Type II supernovae (SNe II) whose early-time ($δt < 2$ days) spectra show transient, narrow emission lines from shock ionization of confined ($r < 10^{15}$ cm) circumstellar material (CSM). The observed electron-scattering broadened line profiles (i.e., IIn-like) of HI, He I/II, C III/IV, and N III/IV/V from the CSM persist on a characteristic timescale ($t_{\rm IIn}$) that marks a transition to a lower-density CSM and the emergence of Doppler-broadened features from the fast-moving SN ejecta. Our sample, the largest to date, consists of 39 SNe with early-time IIn-like features in addition to 35 "comparison" SNe with no evidence of early-time IIn-like features, all with ultraviolet observations. The total sample consists of 50 unpublished objects with 474 previously unpublished spectra and 50 multiband light curves, collected primarily through the Young Supernova Experiment and Global Supernova Project collaborations. For all sample objects, we find a significant correlation between peak ultraviolet brightness and both $t_{\rm IIn}$ and the rise time, as well as evidence for enhanced peak luminosities in SNe II with IIn-like features. We quantify mass-loss rates and CSM density for the sample through matching of peak multiband absolute magnitudes, rise times, $t_{\rm IIn}$ and optical SN spectra with a grid of radiation hydrodynamics and non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (nLTE) radiative-transfer simulations. For our grid of models, all with the same underlying explosion, there is a trend between the duration of the electron-scattering broadened line profiles and inferred mass-loss rate: $t_{\rm IIn} \approx 3.8[\dot{M}/(0.01 \textrm{M}_{\odot} \textrm{yr}^{-1})]$ days.

JWST NIRSpec+MIRI Observations of the nearby Type IIP supernova 2022acko

We present JWST spectral and photometric observations of the Type IIP supernova (SN) 2022acko at ~50 days past explosion. These data are the first JWST spectral observations of a core-collapse SN. We identify ~30 different H I features, other features associated with products produced from the CNO cycle, and s-process elements such as Sc II and Ba II. By combining the JWST spectra with ground-based optical and NIR spectra, we construct a full Spectral Energy Distribution from 0.4 to 25 microns and find that the JWST spectra are fully consistent with the simultaneous JWST photometry. The data lack signatures of CO formation and we estimate a limit on the CO mass of < 10^{-8} solar mass. We demonstrate how the CO fundamental band limits can be used to probe underlying physics during stellar evolution, explosion, and the environment. The observations indicate little mixing between the H envelope and C/O core in the ejecta and show no evidence of dust. The data presented here set a critical baseline for future JWST observations, where possible molecular and dust formation may be seen.

A Cryogen-Free Electron Beam Ion Trap for Astrophysically Relevant Spectroscopic Studies

The detailed design and operation of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory's EBIT are described for the first time, including recent design upgrades that have led to improved system stability and greater user control, increasing the scope of possible experiments. Measurements of emission from highly charged Ar were taken to determine the spatial distribution of the ion cloud and electron beam. An optical setup consisting of two lenses, a narrow band filter, and a CCD camera was used to image visible light, while an X-ray pinhole and CCD camera were used to image X-rays. Measurements were used to estimate an effective electron density of 1.77 x 10$^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$. Additionally, observations of X-ray emission from background EBIT gases were measured with a Silicon Lithium detector. Measurements indicate the presence of Ba and Si, which are both easily removed by dumping the trap every 2 s or less.

NvDEx-100 Conceptual Design Report

Observing nuclear neutrinoless double beta (0vbb) decay would be a revolutionary result in particle physics. Observing such a decay would prove that the neutrinos are their own antiparticles, help to study the absolute mass of neutrinos, explore the origin of their mass, and may explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry in our universe by lepton number violation. We propose developing a time projection chamber (TPC) using high-pressure 82SeF6 gas and top-metal silicon sensors for read-out in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 82Se, called the NvDEx experiment. Besides being located at CJPL with the world's thickest rock shielding, NvDEx combines the advantages of the high Qbb (2.996 MeV) of 82Se and the TPC's ability to distinguish signal and background events using their different topological characteristics. This makes NvDEx unique, with great potential for low-background and high-sensitivity 0vbb searches. NvDEx-100, a NvDEx experiment phase with 100 kg of SeF6 gas, is being built, with plans to complete installation at CJPL by 2025. This report introduces 0vbb physics, the NvDEx concept and its advantages, and the schematic design of NvDEx-100, its subsystems, and background and sensitivity estimation.

SN 2022vqz: A Peculiar Subluminous Type Ia Supernova with Prominent Early Excess Emission

We present extensive photometric and spectroscopic observations of the peculiar Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2022vqz. It shares many similarities with the SN 2002es-like SNe Ia, such as low luminosity ($M_{B,\rm max}=-18.11\pm0.16$ mag) and moderate post-peak decline rate ($Δm_{15,B}=1.33\pm0.11$ mag). The nickel mass synthesised in the explosion is estimated as $0.20\pm0.04~{\rm M}_\odot$ from the bolometric light curve, which is obviously lower than that of normal SNe Ia. SN 2022vqz is also characterised by slowly expanding ejecta, with Si II velocities persisting around 7000 km s$^{-1}$ since 16 days before peak brightness, unique among all known SNe Ia. While all of these properties imply a lower-energy thermonuclear explosion that should leave a considerable amount of unburnt materials, the absent signature of unburnt carbon in spectra of SN 2022vqz is puzzling. A prominent early peak is clearly detected in the ATLAS $c$- and $o$-band light curves and in the ZTF $gr$-band data within days after the explosion. Possible mechanisms for the early peak are discussed, including the sub-Chandrasekhar-mass double-detonation model and interaction of SN ejecta with circumstellar material. We find that both models face some difficulties in replicating all aspects of the observed data. As an alternative, we propose a hybrid C-O-Ne white dwarf as the progenitor of SN 2022vqz; it can simultaneously reconcile the tension between low ejecta velocity and the absence of carbon. We further discuss the diversity of SN 2002es-like objects and their origin in the context of different scenarios.

Sufficient conditions for rescaling expansivity

We demonstrate that any k*-expansive vector field on a closed manifold exhibits rescaling expansiveness. This enhances the principal outcome outlined in \cite{a}. The verification of this assertion hinges on the introduction and exploration of the novel concept termed as a "singular-expansive flow," which will be thoroughly examined.

Accessing new physics with an undoped, cryogenic CsI CEvNS detector for COHERENT at the SNS

We consider the potential for a 10-kg undoped cryogenic CsI detector operating at the Spallation Neutron Source to measure coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering and its sensitivity to discover new physics beyond the standard model. Through a combination of increased event rate, lower threshold, and good timing resolution, such a detector would significantly improve on past measurements. We considered tests of several beyond-the-standard-model scenarios such as neutrino non-standard interactions and accelerator-produced dark matter. This detector's performance was also studied for relevant questions in nuclear physics and neutrino astronomy, namely the weak charge distribution of CsI nuclei and detection of neutrinos from a core-collapse supernova.
