Potential PeVatron supernova remnant G106.3+2.7 seen in the highest-energy gamma rays

Cosmic rays (protons and other atomic nuclei) are believed to gain energies of petaelectronvolts (PeV) and beyond at astrophysical particle accelerators called 'PeVatrons' inside our Galaxy. Although a characteristic feature of a PeVatron is expected to be a hard gamma-ray energy spectrum that extends beyond 100 teraelectronvolts (TeV) without a cutoff, none of the currently known sources exhibits such a spectrum due to the low maximum energy of accelerated cosmic rays or insufficient detector sensitivity around 100 TeV. Here we report the observation of gamma-ray emission from the supernova remnant G106.3+2.7 above 10 TeV. This work provides flux data points up to and above 100 TeV and indicates that the very-high-energy gamma-ray emission above 10 TeV is well correlated with a molecular cloud rather than the pulsar PSR J2229+6114. Regarding the gamma-ray emission mechanism of G106.3+2.7, this morphological feature appears to favor a hadronic origin via the π0 decay caused by accelerated relativistic protons over a leptonic one via the inverse-Compton scattering by relativistic electrons. Furthermore, we point out that an X-ray flux upper limit on the synchrotron spectrum would provide important information to firmly establish the hadronic scenario as the mechanism of particle acceleration at the source.

Design concept for the second interaction region for Electron-Ion Collider

The possibility of two interaction regions (IRs) is a design requirement for the Electron Ion Collider (the EIC). There is also a significant interest from the nuclear physics community in a 2nd IR with measurements capabilities complementary to those of the first IR. While the 2nd IR will be in operation over the entire energy range of ~20GeV to ~140GeV center of mass (CM). The 2nd IR can also provide an acceptance coverage complementary to that of the first. We present a brief overview and the current progress of the 2nd IR design in terms of the parameters, magnet layout, and beam dynamics.

Orbital-dependent modulation of the superconducting gap in uniaxially strained Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$

Pairing symmetry which characterizes the superconducting pairing mechanism is normally determined by measuring the superconducting gap structure ($|Δ_k|$). Here, we report the measurement of a strain-induced gap modulation ($\partial|Δ_k|$) in uniaxially strained Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and $in$-$situ$ strain-tuning. We found that the uniaxial strain drives Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ into a nematic superconducting state which breaks the four-fold rotational symmetry of the superconducting pairing. The superconducting gap increases on the $d_{yz}$ electron and hole pockets while it decreases on the $d_{xz}$ counterparts. Such orbital selectivity indicates that orbital-selective pairing exists intrinsically in non-nematic iron-based superconductors. The $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ pairing channels are balanced originally in the pristine superconducting state, but become imbalanced under uniaxial strain. Our results highlight the important role of intra-orbital scattering in mediating the superconducting pairing in iron-based superconductors. It also highlights the measurement of $\partial|Δ_k|$ as an effective way to characterize the superconducting pairing from a perturbation perspective.

Experimental and theoretical investigation of the thermal effect in the Casimir interaction from graphene

We present the results of an experiment on measuring the gradient of the Casimir force between an Au-coated hollow glass microsphere and graphene-coated fused silica plate by means of a modified atomic force microscope cantilever based technique operated in the dynamic regime. These measurements were performed in high vacuum at room temperature. The energy gap and the concentration of impurities in the graphene sample used have been measured utilizing scanning tunnelling spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. The measurement results for the gradients of the Casimir force are found to be in a very good agreement with theory using the polarization tensor of graphene at nonzero temperature depending on the energy gap and chemical potential with no fitting parameters. The theoretical predictions of the same theory at zero temperature are experimentally excluded over the measurement region from 250 to 517 nm. We have also investigated a dependence of the thermal correction to the Casimir force gradient on the values of the energy gap, chemical potential, and on the presence of a substrate supporting the graphene sheet. It is shown that the observed thermal effect is consistent in size with that arising for pristine graphene sheets if the impact of real conditions such as nonzero values of the energy gap, chemical potential, and the presence of a substrate is included. Implications of the obtained results to the resolution of the long-standing problems in Casimir physics are discussed. In addition to the paper published previously [M. Liu {\it et al}., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 126}, 206802 (2021)], we present measurement results for the energy gap of the graphene sample, double the experimental data for the Casimir force, and perform a more complete theoretical analysis.

Chiral properties of (2+1)-flavor QCD in strong magnetic fields at zero temperature

We present lattice QCD results for masses and magnetic polarizabilities of light and strange pseudoscalar mesons, chiral condensates, decay constants of neutral pion, and neutral kaon in the presence of background magnetic fields with $eB$ ranging up to around 3.35 GeV$^2$ ($\sim70~M_π^2$) in the vacuum. The computations were carried out in (2+1)-flavor QCD mostly on $32^3 \times 96$ lattices using the highly improved staggered quark action with $M_π \approx $ 220 MeV at zero temperature. We find that the masses of neutral pseudoscalar mesons monotonously decrease as the magnetic field strength grows and then saturate at a nonzero value, while there exists a nonmonotonous behavior of charged pion and kaon masses in the magnetic field. We observe a $qB$ scaling of the up and down quark flavor components of neutral pion mass, neutral pion decay constant as well as the quark chiral condensates at 0.05 $\lesssim eB\lesssim$ 3.35 GeV$^2$. We show that the correction to the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation involving the neutral pion is less than 6% and the correction for the relation involving neutral kaon is less than 30% at $eB\lesssim$ 3.35 GeV$^2$. We also derive the Ward-Takahashi identities for QCD in the magnetic field in the continuum formulation including the relation between integrated neutral pseudoscalar meson correlators and chiral condensates.

The Observed Evolution of the Stellar Mass - Halo Mass Relation for Brightest Central Galaxies

We quantify evolution in the cluster scale stellar mass - halo mass (SMHM) relation's parameters using 2323 clusters and brightest central galaxies (BCGs) over the redshift range $0.03 \le z \le 0.60$. The precision on inferred SMHM parameters is improved by including the magnitude gap ($\rm m_{gap}$) between the BCG and fourth brightest cluster member (M14) as a third parameter in the SMHM relation. At fixed halo mass, accounting for $\rm m_{gap}$, through a stretch parameter, reduces the SMHM relation's intrinsic scatter. To explore this redshift range, we use clusters, BCGs, and cluster members identified using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey C4 and redMaPPer cluster catalogs and the Dark Energy Survey redMaPPer catalog. Through this joint analysis, we detect no systematic differences in BCG stellar mass, $\rm m_{gap}$, and cluster mass (inferred from richness) between the datsets. We utilize the Pareto function to quantify each parameter's evolution. We confirm prior findings of negative evolution in the SMHM relation's slope (3.5$σ$) and detect negative evolution in the stretch parameter (4.0$σ$) and positive evolution in the offset parameter (5.8$σ$). This observed evolution, combined with the absence of BCG growth, when stellar mass is measured within 50kpc, suggests that this evolution results from changes in the cluster's $\rm m_{gap}$. For this to occur, late-term growth must be in the intra-cluster light surrounding the BCG. We also compare the observed results to Illustris TNG 300-1 cosmological hydrodynamic simulations and find modest qualitative agreement. However, the simulations lack the evolutionary features detected in the real data.

Dark Energy Survey Year 3 Results: Photometric Data Set for Cosmology

We describe the Dark Energy Survey (DES) photometric data set assembled from the first three years of science operations to support DES Year 3 cosmology analyses, and provide usage notes aimed at the broad astrophysics community. Y3 Gold improves on previous releases from DES, Y1 Gold and Data Release 1 (DES DR1), presenting an expanded and curated data set that incorporates algorithmic developments in image detrending and processing, photometric calibration, and object classification. Y3 Gold comprises nearly 5000 square degrees of grizY imaging in the south Galactic cap, including nearly 390 million objects, with depth reaching S/N ~ 10 for extended objects up to $i_{AB}\sim 23.0$, and top-of-the-atmosphere photometric uniformity $< 3$ mmag. Compared to DR1, photometric residuals with respect to Gaia are reduced by $50\%$, and per-object chromatic corrections are introduced. Y3 Gold augments DES DR1 with simultaneous fits to multi-epoch photometry for more robust galaxy color measurements and corresponding photometric redshift estimates. Y3 Gold features improved morphological star-galaxy classification with efficiency $>98\%$ and purity $>99\%$ for galaxies with $19 < i_{AB} < 22.5$. Additionally, it includes per-object quality information, and accompanying maps of the footprint coverage, masked regions, imaging depth, survey conditions, and astrophysical foregrounds that are used to select the cosmology analysis samples. This paper will be complemented by online resources.

First Detection of sub-PeV Diffuse Gamma Rays from the Galactic Disk: Evidence for Ubiquitous Galactic Cosmic Rays beyond PeV Energies

We report, for the first time, the long-awaited detection of diffuse gamma rays with energies between 100 TeV and 1 PeV in the Galactic disk. Particularly, all gamma rays above 398 TeV are observed apart from known TeV gamma-ray sources and compatible with expectations from the hadronic emission scenario in which gamma rays originate from the decay of $π^0$'s produced through the interaction of protons with the interstellar medium in the Galaxy. This is strong evidence that cosmic rays are accelerated beyond PeV energies in our Galaxy and spread over the Galactic disk.

Dynamical mean-field theory of the Anderson-Hubbard model with local and non-local disorder in tensor formulation

To explore correlated electrons in the presence of local and non-local disorder, the Blackman-Esterling-Berk method for averaging over off-diagonal disorder is implemented into dynamical mean-field theory using tensor notation. The impurity model combining disorder and correlations is solved using the recently developed fork tensor-product state solver, which allows one to calculate the single particle spectral functions on the real-frequency axis. In the absence of off-diagonal hopping, we establish exact bounds of the spectral function of the non-interacting Bethe lattice with coordination number $Z$. In the presence of interaction, the Mott insulating paramagnetic phase of the one-band Hubbard model is computed at zero temperature in alloys with site- and off-diagonal disorder. When the Hubbard $U$ parameter is increased, transitions from an alloy band-insulator through a correlated metal into a Mott insulating phase are found to take place.

Demonstration of an Unusual Thermal Effect in the Casimir Force from Graphene

We report precision measurements of the gradient of the Casimir force between an Au-coated sphere and graphene sheet deposited on a silica plate. The measurement data are compared with exact theory using the polarization tensor found in the framework of the Dirac model including effects of the nonzero chemical potential and energy gap of the graphene sample with no fitting parameters. The very good agreement between experiment and theory demonstrates the unusually big thermal effect at separations below 1 mum which has never been observed for conventional 3D materials. Thus, it is confirmed experimentally that for graphene the effective temperature is determined by the Fermi velocity rather than by the speed of light.

Identifying RR Lyrae Variable Stars in Six Years of the Dark Energy Survey

We present a search for RR Lyrae stars using the full six-year data set from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) covering ~5,000 sq. deg. of the southern sky. Using a multi-stage multi-variate classification and light curve template-fitting scheme, we identify RR Lyrae candidates with a median of 35 observations per candidate. We detect 6,971 RR Lyrae candidates out to ~335 kpc, and we estimate that our sample is >70% complete at ~150 kpc. We find excellent agreement with other wide-area RR Lyrae catalogs and RR Lyrae studies targeting the Magellanic Clouds and other Milky Way satellite galaxies. We fit the smooth stellar halo density profile using a broken-power-law model with fixed halo flattening (q = 0.7), and we find strong evidence for a break at $R_0 = 32.1^{+1.1}_{-0.9}$ kpc with an inner slope of $n_1 = -2.54^{+0.09}_{-0.09}$ and an outer slope of $n_2 = -5.42^{+0.13}_{-0.14}$. We use our catalog to perform a search for Milky Way satellite galaxies with large sizes and low luminosities. Using a set of simulated satellite galaxies, we find that our RR Lyrae-based search is more sensitive than those using resolved stellar populations in the regime of large ($r_h > 500$ pc), low-surface-brightness dwarf galaxies. A blind search for large, diffuse satellites yields three candidate substructures. The first can be confidently associated with the dwarf galaxy Eridanus II. The second has a similar distance and proper motion to the ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Tucana II but is separated by ~5 deg. The third is close in projection to the globular cluster NGC 1851 but is ~10 kpc more distant and appears to differ in proper motion.

Superradiance of molecular nitrogen ions in strong laser fields

We perform a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of the superradiance in the quantum coherent system generated by strong laser fields. The semiclassical theory of superradiance that includes the superradiant temporal profile, character duration, time delay, intensity is derived. The experimental data and theoretical predictions of 391-nm forward emission as a function of nitrogen gas pressure are compared and show good agreement. Our results not only demonstrate that the time-delayed optical amplification inside the molecular nitrogen ions is superradiance, but also reveal the quantum optical properties of strong-field physics.

The first Hubble diagram and cosmological constraints using superluminous supernova

We present the first Hubble diagram of superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) out to a redshift of two, together with constraints on the matter density, $Ω_{\rm M}$, and the dark energy equation-of-state parameter, $w(\equiv p/ρ)$. We build a sample of 20 cosmologically useful SLSNe~I based on light curve and spectroscopy quality cuts. We confirm the robustness of the peak decline SLSN~I standardization relation with a larger dataset and improved fitting techniques than previous works. We then solve the SLSN model based on the above standardisation via minimisation of the $χ^2$ computed from a covariance matrix which includes statistical and systematic uncertainties. For a spatially flat $Λ$CDM cosmological model, we find $Ω_{\rm M}=0.38^{+0.24}_{-0.19}$, with a rms of 0.27 mag for the residuals of the distance moduli. For a $w_0w_a$CDM cosmological model, the addition of SLSNe~I to a `baseline' measurement consisting of Planck temperature together with type Ia supernovae, results in a small improvement in the constraints of $w_0$ and $w_a$ of 4\%. We present simulations of future surveys with 868 and 492 SLSNe I (depending on the configuration used) and show that such a sample can deliver cosmological constraints in a flat $Λ$CDM model with the same precision (considering only statistical uncertainties) as current surveys that use type Ia supernovae, while providing a factor 2-3 improvement in the precision of the constraints on the time variation of dark energy, $w_0$ and $w_a$. This paper represents the proof-of-concept for superluminous supernova cosmology, and demonstrates they can provide an independent test of cosmology in the high-redshift ($z>1$) universe.

Non-local corrections to the typical medium theory of Anderson localization

We use the recently developed finite cluster typical medium approach to study the Anderson localization transition in three dimensions. Applying our method to the box and binary alloy disorder distributions, we find a fast convergence with the cluster size. We demonstrate the importance of the typical medium environment and the non-local spatial correlations for the proper characterization of the localization transition. As the cluster size increases, our typical medium cluster method recovers the correct critical disorder strength for the transition. Our findings highlight the importance of the non-local cluster corrections for capturing the localization behavior of the mobility edge trajectories. Our results demonstrate that the typical medium cluster approach developed here provides a consistent and systematic description of the Anderson localization transition in the framework of the effective medium embedding schemes.

Infrared study of the interplay of charge, spin, and lattice excitations in the magnetic topological insulator EuIn$_2$As$_{2}$

We report an infrared spectroscopy study of the axion topological insulator candidate EuIn$_2$As$_2$ for which the Eu moments exhibit an A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) order below $T_N \simeq 18 \mathrm{K}$. The low energy response is composed of a weak Drude peak at the origin, a pronounced infrared-active phonon mode at 185 cm$^{-1}$ and a free carrier plasma edge around 600 cm$^{-1}$. The interband transitions start above 800 cm$^{-1}$ and give rise to a series of weak absorption bands at 5\,000 and 12\,000 cm$^{-1}$ and strong ones at 20\,000, 27\,500 and 32\,000 cm$^{-1}$. The AFM transition gives rise to pronounced anomalies of the charge response in terms of a cusp-like maximum of the free carrier scattering rate around $T_N$ and large magnetic splittings of the interband transitions at 5\,000 and 12\,000 cm$^{-1}$. The phonon mode at 185 cm$^{-1}$ has also an anomalous temperature dependence around $T_N$ which suggests that it couples to the fluctuations of the Eu spins. The combined data provide evidence for a strong interaction amongst the charge, spin and lattice degrees of freedom.

Influence of Micro-turbulence on Neoclassical Tearing Mode Onset

Direct evidence of micro-turbulence effect on the onset of neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) is reported for the first time in this letter. A puzzling positive correlation between critical width of seed island of NTM and normalized plasma pressure beta_p is first observed employing a novel method for clearly separating the processes of seed island and the onset of NTM in the EAST tokamak. Different from the methods developed before, the width of the seed island is well controlled by slowly ramping up the current in resonant magnetic perturbation coils. It is revealed that the positive correlation is mainly attributed to the enhancement of perpendicular transport by micro-turbulence, which overcomes the destabilizing effect of beta_p on the onset of NTM. Reduced magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) modeling well reproduced the two states of nonlinear bifurcations observed in this experiment by including the finite transport effect. This result provides a new route for understanding multi-scale interaction in plasma physics.

Giant spin Hall angle in the Heusler alloy Weyl ferromagnet Co$_2$MnGa

Weyl semimetals are playing a major role in condensed matter physics due to exotic topological properties, and their coexistence with ferromagnetism may lead to enhanced spin-related phenomena. Here, the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) in the ferromagnetic Weyl-semimetal Heusler alloy Co$_2$MnGa was investigated at room temperature by means of electrical spin injection in lateral spin valve structures. Spin transport properties such as spin polarization and spin diffusion length in this material were precisely extracted in order to estimate the spin Hall angle $θ_{\textrm{SH}}$, which was found to be $-0.19\pm0.04$ and is among the highest reported for a ferromagnet. Although this value is on the same order of magnitude of known heavy metals, the significantly higher resistivity of Co$_2$MnGa implies an improvement on the magnitude of detection voltages, while its ferromagnetic nature allows controlling the intensity of SHE through the magnetization direction. It was also shown that Onsager's reciprocity does not hold for this system, which is in part attributable to a different spin-dependent Hall conductivity for spin-up and spin-down carriers.

Hard x-ray photoemission study on strain effect in LaNiO$_3$ thin films

The strain effect from a substrate is an important experimental route to control electronic and magnetic properties in transition-metal oxide (TMO) thin films. Using hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, we investigate the strain dependence of the valence states in LaNiO$_{3}$ thin films, strongly correlated perovskite TMO, grown on four substrates: LaAlO$_{3}$, (LaAlO$_{3}$)$_{0.3}$(SrAl$_{0.5}$Ta$_{0.5}$O$_{3}$)$_{0.7}$, SrTiO$_{3}$, and DyScO$_{3}$. A Madelung potential analysis of core-level spectra suggests that the point-charge description is valid for the La ions while it breaks down for Ni and O ions due to a strong covalent bonding between the two. A clear x-ray photon-energy dependence of the valence spectra is analyzed by the density functional theory, which points to a presence of the La 5$p$ state near the Fermi level.
