Discovery and Physical Characterization of a Large Scattered Disk Object at 92 AU

We report the observation and physical characterization of the possible dwarf planet \UZ\ ("DeeDee"), a dynamically detached trans-Neptunian object discovered at 92 AU. This object is currently the second-most distant known trans-Neptunian object with reported orbital elements, surpassed in distance only by the dwarf planet Eris. The object was discovered with an $r$-band magnitude of 23.0 in data collected by the Dark Energy Survey between 2014 and 2016. Its 1140-year orbit has $(a,e,i) = (109~\mathrm{AU}, 0.65, 26.8^{\circ})$. It will reach its perihelion distance of 38 AU in the year 2142. Integrations of its orbit show it to be dynamically stable on Gyr timescales, with only weak interactions with Neptune. We have performed followup observations with ALMA, using 3 hours of on-source integration time to measure the object's thermal emission in the Rayleigh-Jeans tail. The signal is detected at 7$σ$ significance, from which we determine a $V$-band albedo of $13.1^{+3.3}_{-2.4}\mathrm{(stat)}^{+2.0}_{-1.4}\mathrm{(sys)}$ percent and a diameter of $635^{+57}_{-61}\mathrm{(stat)}^{+32}_{-39}\mathrm{(sys)}$~km, assuming a spherical body with uniform surface properties.

Effect of Sr-doping of LaMnO3 spacer on modulation-doped two-dimensional electron gases at oxide interfaces

Modulation-doped oxide two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed at the LaMnO3 (LMO) buffered disorderd-LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (d-LAO/LMO/STO) heterointerface, provides new opportunities for electronics as well as quantum physics. Herein, we studied the dependence of Sr-doping of La1-xSrxMnO3 (LSMO, x=0, 1/8, 1/3, 1/2, and 1) thus the filling of the Mn eg subbands as well as the LSMO polarity on the transport properties of d-LAO/LSMO/STO. Upon increasing the LSMO film thickness from 1 unit cell (uc) to 2 uc, a sharp metal to insulator transition of interface conduction was observed, independent of x. The resultant electron mobility is often higher than 1900 cm2V-1s-1 at 2 K, which increases upon decreasing x. The sheet carrier density, on the other hand, is in the range of 6.9E1012~1.8E1013 cm-2 (0.01~0.03 e/uc) and is largely independent on x for all the metallic d-LAO/LSMO (1 uc)/STO interfaces. These results are consistent with the charge transfer induced modulation doping scheme and clarify that the polarity of the buffer layer plays a trivial role on the modulation doping. The negligible tunability of the carrier density could result from the reduction of LSMO during the deposition of disordered LAO or that the energy levels of Mn 3d electrons at the interface of LSMO/STO are hardly varied even when changing the LSMO composition from LMO to SrMnO3.

Farthest Neighbor: The Distant Milky Way Satellite Eridanus II

We present Magellan/IMACS spectroscopy of the recently-discovered Milky Way satellite Eridanus II (Eri II). We identify 28 member stars in Eri II, from which we measure a systemic radial velocity of $v_{\rm hel} = 75.6 \pm 1.3~\mbox{(stat.)} \pm 2.0~\mbox{(sys.)}~\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$ and a velocity dispersion of $6.9^{+1.2}_{-0.9}~\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$. Assuming that Eri~II is a dispersion-supported system in dynamical equilibrium, we derive a mass within the half-light radius of Eri II is $1.2^{+0.4}_{-0.3} \times 10^{7}~\mathrm{M_\odot}$, indicating a mass-to-light ratio of $420^{+210}_{-140}~\mathrm{M_\odot}/\mathrm{L_\odot}$ and confirming that it is a dark matter-dominated dwarf galaxy. From the equivalent width measurements of the CaT lines of 16 red giant member stars, we derive a mean metallicity of ${\rm [Fe/H]} = -2.38 \pm 0.13$ and a metallicity dispersion of $σ_{\rm [Fe/H]} = 0.47 ^{+0.12}_{-0.09}$. The velocity of Eri II in the Galactic Standard of Rest frame is $v_{\rm GSR} = -66.6~\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$, indicating that either Eri II is falling into the Milky Way potential for the first time or it has passed the apocenter of its orbit on a subsequent passage. At a Galactocentric distance of $\sim$370 kpc, Eri II is one of the Milky Way's most distant satellites known. Additionally, we show that the bright blue stars previously suggested to be a young stellar population are not associated with Eri II. The lack of gas and recent star formation in Eri II is surprising given its mass and distance from the Milky Way, and may place constraints on models of quenching in dwarf galaxies and on the distribution of hot gas in the Milky Way halo. Furthermore, the large velocity dispersion of Eri II can be combined with the existence of a central star cluster to constrain MACHO dark matter with mass $\gtrsim10~\mathrm{M_\odot}$.

Selective decay from a candidate of the $σ$-bond linear-chain state in $^{14}$C

A cluster-transfer experiment $^9$Be($^9$Be,$^{14}$C$^*\rightarrowα$+$^{10}$Be)$α$ was carried out using an incident beam energy of 45 MeV. This reaction channel has a large $Q$-value that favors populating the high-lying states in $^{14}$C and separating various reaction channels. A number of resonant states are reconstructed from the forward emitting $^{10}$Be + $α$ fragments with respect to three sets of well discriminated final states in $^{10}$Be, most of which agree with the previous observations. A state at 22.5(1) MeV in $^{14}$C is found to decay predominantly into the states around 6 MeV in $^{10}$Be daughter nucleus, in line with the unique property of the predicted band head of the $σ$-bond linear-chain molecular states. A new state at 23.5(1) MeV is identified which decays strongly into the first excited state of $^{10}$Be.

Environmental dependence of the galaxy stellar mass function in the Dark Energy Survey Science Verification Data

Measurements of the galaxy stellar mass function are crucial to understand the formation of galaxies in the Universe. In a hierarchical clustering paradigm it is plausible that there is a connection between the properties of galaxies and their environments. Evidence for environmental trends has been established in the local Universe. The Dark Energy Survey (DES) provides large photometric datasets that enable further investigation of the assembly of mass. In this study we use ~3.2 million galaxies from the (South Pole Telescope) SPT-East field in the DES science verification (SV) dataset. From grizY photometry we derive galaxy stellar masses and absolute magnitudes, and determine the errors on these properties using Monte-Carlo simulations using the full photometric redshift probability distributions. We compute galaxy environments using a fixed conical aperture for a range of scales. We construct galaxy environment probability distribution functions and investigate the dependence of the environment errors on the aperture parameters. We compute the environment components of the galaxy stellar mass function for the redshift range 0.15<z<1.05. For z<0.75 we find that the fraction of massive galaxies is larger in high density environment than in low density environments. We show that the low density and high density components converge with increasing redshift up to z~1.0 where the shapes of the mass function components are indistinguishable. Our study shows how high density structures build up around massive galaxies through cosmic time.

A study of event mixing for two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in the γp -> π^0 π^0 p reaction

We develop an event mixing technique with a missing mass consistency (MMC) cut and a pion energy (PE) cut for the measurement of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) in reactions with only two identical pions produced in the final state. A multi mixing mode that allows one event to be mixed with multiple other events is proposed for the purpose of improving the statistics of mixed samples, and compared with the single mixing mode which requires one original event can be mixed only once. Numerical tests using the γp -> π^0 π^0 p events are used to testify its ability to measure two-pion correlations. To improve the mixing speed, the optimal MMC cut window is also explored via simulations.

Asymmetric Spin-wave Dispersion on Fe(110): Direct Evidence of Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya Interaction

The influence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on the spin-wave dispersion in an Fe double layer grown on W(110) is measured for the first time. It is demonstrated that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction breaks the degeneracy of spin waves and leads to an asymmetric spin-wave dispersion relation. An extended Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian is employed to obtain the longitudinal component of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vectors from the experimentally measured energy asymmetry.

KATANA - a charge-sensitive triggering system for the S$π$RIT experiment

KATANA - the Krakow Array for Triggering with Amplitude discrimiNAtion - has been built and used as a trigger and veto detector for the S$π$RIT TPC at RIKEN. Its construction allows operating in magnetic field and providing fast response for ionizing particles, giving the approximate forward multiplicity and charge information. Depending on this information, trigger and veto signals are generated. The article presents performance of the detector and details of its construction. A simple phenomenological parametrization of the number of emitted scintillation photons in plastic scintillator is proposed. The effect of the light output deterioration in the plastic scintillator due to the in-beam irradiation is discussed.

A Gating Grid Driver for Time Projection Chambers

A simple but novel driver system has been developed to operate the wire gating grid of a Time Projection Chamber (TPC). This system connects the wires of the gating grid to its driver via low impedance transmission lines. When the gating grid is open, all wires have the same voltage allowing drift electrons, produced by the ionization of the detector gas molecules, to pass through to the anode wires. When the grid is closed, the wires have alternating higher and lower voltages causing the drift electrons to terminate at the more positive wires. Rapid opening of the gating grid with low pickup noise is achieved by quickly shorting the positive and negative wires to attain the average bias potential with N-type and P-type MOSFET switches. The circuit analysis and simulation software SPICE shows that the driver restores the gating grid voltage to 90% of the opening voltage in less than 0.20 $μ$s. When tested in the experimental environment of a time projection chamber larger termination resistors were chosen so that the driver opens the gating grid in 0.35 $μ$s. In each case, opening time is basically characterized by the RC constant given by the resistance of the switches and terminating resistors and the capacitance of the gating grid and its transmission line. By adding a second pair of N-type and P-type MOSFET switches, the gating grid is closed by restoring 99% of the original charges to the wires within 3 $μ$s.

Typical-medium, multiple-scattering theory for disordered systems with Anderson localization

The typical medium dynamical cluster approximation (TMDCA) is reformulated in the language of multiple scattering theory to make possible first principles calculations of the electronic structure of substitutionally disordered alloys including the effect of Anderson localization. The TMDCA allows for a systematic inclusion of non-local multi-site correlations and at same time provides an order parameter, the typical density of states, for the Anderson localization transition. The relation between the dynamical cluster approximation and the multiple scattering theory is analyzed, and is illustrated for a tight-binding model.

Emergent Weyl fermion excitations in TaP explored by 181-Ta quadrupole resonance

The $^{181}$Ta quadrupole resonance (NQR) technique has been utilized to investigate the microscopic magnetic properties of the Weyl semi-metal TaP. We found three zero-field NQR signals associated with the transition between the quadrupole split levels for Ta with $I$=7/2 nuclear spin. A quadrupole coupling constant, $ν_{\mathrm{Q}}$ =19.250 MHz, and an asymmetric parameter of the electric field gradient, $η$ = 0.423 were extracted, in good agreement with band structure calculations. In order to examine the magnetic excitations, the temperature dependence of the spin lattice relaxation rate (1/$T_{\mathrm{1}}T$) has been measured for the $f_{\mathrm{2}}$-line ($\pm$5/2 $\leftrightarrow$ $\pm$3/2 transition). We found that there exists two regimes with quite different relaxation processes. Above $T\text{*}$ $\approx$ 30 K, a pronounced (1/$T_{\mathrm{1}}T$) $\propto$ $T^{2}$ behavior was found, which is attributed to the magnetic excitations at the Weyl nodes with temperature dependent orbital hyperfine coupling. Below $T\text{*}$, the relaxation is mainly governed by Korringa process with 1/$T_{\mathrm{1}}T$ = constant, accompanied by an additional $T^{-1/2}$ type dependence to fit our experimental data. We show that Ta-NQR is a novel probe for the bulk Weyl fermions and their excitations.

The Deep and Transient Universe in the SVOM Era: New Challenges and Opportunities - Scientific prospects of the SVOM mission

To take advantage of the astrophysical potential of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), Chinese and French astrophysicists have engaged the SVOM mission (Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor). Major advances in GRB studies resulting from the synergy between space and ground observations, the SVOM mission implements space and ground instrumentation. The scientific objectives of the mission put a special emphasis on two categories of GRBs: very distant GRBs at z$>$5 which constitute exceptional cosmological probes, and faint/soft nearby GRBs which allow probing the nature of the progenitors and the physics at work in the explosion. These goals have a major impact on the design of the mission: the on-board hard X-ray imager is sensitive down to 4 keV and computes on line image and rate triggers, and the follow-up telescopes on the ground are sensitive in the NIR. At the beginning of the next decade, SVOM will be the main provider of GRB positions and spectral parameters on very short time scale. The SVOM instruments will operate simultaneously with a wide range of powerful astronomical devices. This rare instrumental conjunction, combined with the relevance of the scientific topics connected with GRB studies, warrants a remarkable scientific return for SVOM. In addition, the SVOM instrumentation, primarily designed for GRB studies, composes a unique multi-wavelength observatory with rapid slew capability that will find multiple applications for the whole astronomy community beyond the specific objectives linked to GRBs. This report lists the scientific themes that will benefit from observations made with SVOM, whether they are specific GRB topics, or more generally all the issues that can take advantage of the multi-wavelength capabilities of SVOM.

LAMOST Observations of Flaring M Dwarfs in the Kepler Field

A sample of the LAMOST spectra of the early type M0-M3 dwarfs is compared with the Kepler observations. It is found that M dwarfs with strong chromospheric emission in $H_α$ have large flare activity in general. The rotational periods derived from the Kepler measurements have close correlations with the sizes of the flares, the power-law distribution index and the equivalent widths of the $H_α$ emission. A clear trend exists for higher magnetic activities being detected in faster rotating M dwarfs (rotation periods $<$ 20 day).

A Search for the LHCb Charmed 'Pentaquark' using Photo-Production of $J/ψ$ at Threshold in Hall C at Jefferson Lab

We propose to measure the photo-production cross section of $J/ψ$ near threshold, in search of the recently observed LHCb hidden-charm resonances $P_c$(4380) and $P_c$(4450) consistent with 'pentaquarks'. The observation of these resonances in photo-production will provide strong evidence of the true resonance nature of the LHCb states, distinguishing them from kinematic enhancements. A bremsstrahlung photon beam produced with an 11 GeV electron beam at CEBAF covers the energy range of $J/ψ$ production from the threshold photo-production energy of 8.2 GeV, to an energy beyond the presumed $P_c$(4450) resonance. The experiment will be carried out in Hall C at Jefferson Lab using a 50μA electron beam incident on a 9% copper radiator. The resulting photon beam passes through a 15 cm liquid hydrogen target, producing $J/ψ$ mesons through a diffractive process in the $t$-channel, or through a resonant process in the $s$- and $u$-channel. The decay $e^+e^-$ pair of the $J/ψ$ will be detected in coincidence using the two high-momentum spectrometers of Hall C. The spectrometer settings have been optimized to distinguish the resonant $s$- and $u$-channel production from the diffractive $t$-channel $J/ψ$ production. The $s$- and $u$-channel production of the charmed 5-quark resonance dominates the $t$-distribution at large $t$. The momentum and angular resolution of the spectrometers is sufficient to observe a clear resonance enhancement in the total cross section and $t$-distribution. We request a total of 11 days of beam time with 9 days to carry the main experiment and 2 days to acquire the needed $t$-channel elastic $J/ψ$ production data for a calibration measurement. This calibration measurement in itself will greatly enhance our knowledge of $t$-channel elastic $J/ψ$ production near threshold.

Comparing Dark Energy Survey and HST-CLASH observations of the galaxy cluster RXC J2248.7-4431: implications for stellar mass versus dark matter

We derive the stellar mass fraction in the galaxy cluster RXC J2248.7-4431 observed with the Dark Energy Survey (DES) during the Science Verification period. We compare the stellar mass results from DES (five filters) with those from the Hubble Space Telescope Cluster Lensing And Supernova Survey (CLASH; 17 filters). When the cluster spectroscopic redshift is assumed, we show that stellar masses from DES can be estimated within 25% of CLASH values. We compute the stellar mass contribution coming from red and blue galaxies, and study the relation between stellar mass and the underlying dark matter using weak lensing studies with DES and CLASH. An analysis of the radial profiles of the DES total and stellar mass yields a stellar-to-total fraction of f*=(6.8+-1.7)x10^-3 within a radius of r_200c~2 Mpc. Our analysis also includes a comparison of photometric redshifts and star/galaxy separation efficiency for both data sets. We conclude that space-based small field imaging can be used to calibrate the galaxy properties in DES for the much wider field of view. The technique developed to derive the stellar mass fraction in galaxy clusters can be applied to the ~100 000 clusters that will be observed within this survey and yield important information about galaxy evolution.

Cluster Decay of the High-lying excited states in $^{14}$C

A cluster-transfer experiment of $^9\rm{Be}(^9\rm{Be},^{14}\rm{C}\rightarrowα+^{10}\rm{Be})α$ at an incident energy of 45 MeV was carried out in order to investigate the molecular structure in high-lying resonant states in $^{14}$C. This reaction is of extremely large $Q$-value, making it an excellent case to select the reaction mechanism and the final states in outgoing nuclei. The high-lying resonances in $^{14}$C are reconstructed for three sets of well discriminated final states in $^{10}$Be. The results confirm the previous decay measurements with clearly improved decay-channel selections and show also a new state at 23.5(1) MeV. The resonant states at 22.4(3) and 24.0(3) MeV decay primarily into the typical molecular states at about 6 MeV in $^{10}$Be, indicating a well developed cluster structure in these high-lying states in $^{14}$C. Further measurements of more states of this kind are suggested.

Study of Beam Synchronization at JLEIC

The ion collider ring of Jefferson Lab Electron-Ion Collider (JLEIC) accommodates a wide range of ion energies, from 20 to 100 GeV for protons or from 8 to 40 GeV per nucleon for lead ions. In this medium energy range, ions are not fully relativistic, which means values of their relativistic beta are slightly below 1, leading to an energy dependence of revolution time of the collider ring. On the other hand, electrons with energy 3 GeV and above are already ultra-relativistic such that their speeds are effectively equal to the speed of light. The difference in speeds of colliding electrons and ions in JLEIC, when translated into a path-length difference necessary to maintain the same timing between electron and ion bunches, is quite large. In this paper, we explore schemes for synchronizing the electron and ion bunches at a collision point as the ion energy is varied.

Measurements of $d_{2}^{n}$ and $A_{1}^{n}$: Probing the neutron spin structure

We report on the results of the E06-014 experiment performed at Jefferson Lab in Hall A, where a precision measurement of the twist-3 matrix element $d_2$ of the neutron ($d_{2}^{n}$) was conducted. This quantity represents the average color Lorentz force a struck quark experiences in a deep inelastic electron scattering event off a neutron due to its interaction with the hadronizing remnants. This color force was determined from a linear combination of the third moments of the spin structure functions $g_1$ and $g_2$ on $^{3}$He after nuclear corrections had been applied to these moments. The kinematics included two average $Q^{2}$ bins of $3.2$ GeV$^{2}$ and $4.3$ GeV$^{2}$, and Bjorken-$x$ $0.25 \leq x \leq 0.90$ covering the DIS and resonance regions. We found $d_2^n$ to be small and negative for $ = 3.2$ GeV$^{2}$, and smaller for $ = 4.3$ GeV$^{2}$, consistent with a lattice QCD calculation. The twist-4 matrix element $f_{2}^{n}$ was extracted by combining our $d_{2}^{n}$ with the world data on $Γ_{1}^{n} = \int_{0}^{1} g_{1}^{n} dx$. We found $f_{2}^{n}$ to be roughly an order of magnitude larger than $d_{2}^{n}$. Utilizing the extracted $d_{2}^{n}$ and $f_{2}^{n}$ data, we separated the color force into its electric and magnetic components, $F_{E}^{y,n}$ and $F_{B}^{y,n}$, and found them to be equal and opposite in magnitude, in agreement with instanton model predictions but not with those from QCD sum rules. Additionally, we have extracted the neutron virtual photon-nucleon asymmetry $A_{1}^{n}$, the structure function ratio $g_{1}^{n}/F_{1}^{n}$, and the quark ratios $(Δu + Δ\bar{u})/(u + \bar{u})$ and $(Δd + Δ\bar{d})/(d + \bar{d})$. These results were found to be consistent with DIS world data and with the prediction of the constituent quark model but at odds with those of perturbative QCD at large $x$.
