Photoluminescence spectroscopy of YVO$_{4}$:Eu$^{3+}$ nanoparticles with aromatic linker molecules: a precursor to biomedical functionalization

Photoluminescence spectra of YVO$_{4}$:Eu$^{3+}$ nanoparticles are presented, with and without the attachment of of organic linker molecules that are proposed for linking to biomolecules. YVO$_{4}$:Eu$^{3+}$ nanoparticles with 5% dopant concentration were synthesized by wet chemical synthesis. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy show the expected wakefieldite structure of tetragonal particles with an average size of 17 nm. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy determines that metal-carboxylate coordination is successful in replacing the native metal-hydroxyl bonds with three organic linkers, namely benzoic acid, 3-nitro 4-chloro-benzoic acid and 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, in separate treatments. UV-excitation photoluminescence spectra show that the position and intensity of dominant $^{5}D_{0}-^{7}F_{2}$ electric-dipole transition at 619 nm is unaffected by the benzoic acid and 3-nitro 4-chloro-benzoic acid treatments. Attachment of the 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid produces an order-of-magnitude quenching of the photoluminescence, due to the presence of high-frequency modes in the linker. Ratios of the dominant electric- and magnetic-dipole transitions confirm infrared measurements, which indicate that the bulk crystal of the nanoparticle is unchanged by all three treatments.

Orbital selective correlations between nesting/scattering/Lifshitz transition and the superconductivity in AFe1-xCoxAs (A=Li, Na)

The correlations between the superconductivity in iron pnictides and their electronic structures are elusive and controversial so far. Here through angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, we show that such correlations are rather distinct in AFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As (A=Li, Na), but only after one realizes that they are orbital selective. We found that the superconductivity is enhanced by the Fermi surface nesting, but only when it is between $d_{xz}/d_{yz}$ Fermi surfaces, while for the $d_{xy}$ orbital, even nearly perfect Fermi surface nesting could not induce superconductivity. Moreover, the superconductivity is completely suppressed just when the $d_{xz}/d_{yz}$ hole pockets sink below Fermi energy and evolve into an electron pocket. Our results thus establish the orbital selective relation between the Fermiology and the superconductivity in iron-based superconductors, and substantiate the critical role of the $d_{xz}/d_{yz}$ orbitals. Furthermore, around the zone center, we found that the $d_{xz}/d_{yz}$-based bands are much less sensitive to impurity scattering than the $d_{xy}$-based band, which explains the robust superconductivity against heavy doping in iron-based superconductors.

Extraordinary quasiparticle scattering and bandwidth-control by dopants in iron-based superconductors

The diversities in crystal structures and ways of doping result in extremely diversified phase diagrams for iron-based superconductors. With angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we have systematically studied the effects of chemical substitution on the electronic structure of various series of iron-based superconductors. In addition to the control of Fermi surface topology by heterovalent doping, we found two more extraordinary effects of doping: 1. the site and band dependencies of quasiparticle scattering; and more importantly 2. the ubiquitous and significant bandwidth-control by both isovalent and heterovalent dopants in the iron-anion layer. Moreover, we found that the bandwidth-control could be achieved by either applying the chemical pressure or doping electrons, but not by doping holes. Together with other findings provided here, these results complete the microscopic picture of the electronic effects of dopants, which facilitates a unified understanding of the diversified phase diagrams and resolutions to many open issues of various iron-based superconductors.

Dynamic competition between spin density wave order and superconductivity in underdoped $Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2$

An intriguing aspect of unconventional superconductivity is that it always appears in the vicinity of other competing phases, whose suppression brings the full emergence of superconductivity. In the iron-pnictides, these competing phases are marked by a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition and a collinear spin-density-wave (SDW) transition. There has been macroscopic evidence for competition between these phases and superconductivity as the magnitude of both the orthorhombicity and magnetic moment are suppressed in the superconducting state. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on detwinned underdoped $Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2$, we observe a coexistence of both the SDW gap and superconducting gap in the same electronic structure. Furthermore, our data reveal that following the onset of superconductivity, the SDW gap decreases in magnitude and shifts in a direction consistent with a reduction of the orbital anisotropy. This observation provides direct spectroscopic evidence for the dynamic competition between superconductivity and both SDW and electronic nematic orders in these materials.

Angle-resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy Study on the Surface States of the Correlated Topological Insulator YbB6

We report the electronic structure of YbB6, a recently predicted moderately correlated topological insulator, measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We directly observed linearly dispersive bands around the time-reversal invariant momenta Γ and X with negligible kz dependence, consistent with odd number of surface states crossing the Fermi level in a Z2 topological insulator. Circular dichroism photoemission spectra suggest that these in-gap states possess chirality of orbital angular momentum, which is related to the chiral spin texture, further indicative of their topological nature. The observed insulating gap of YbB6 is about 100 meV, larger than that reported by theoretical calculations. Our results present strong evidence that YbB6 is a correlated topological insulator and provide a foundation for further studies of this promising material.

Photo-induced Doping in Graphene/Boron Nitride Heterostructures

The design of stacks of layered materials in which adjacent layers interact by van der Waals forces[1] has enabled the combination of various two-dimensional crystals with different electrical, optical and mechanical properties, and the emergence of novel physical phenomena and device functionality[2-8]. Here we report photo-induced doping in van der Waals heterostructures (VDHs) consisting of graphene and boron nitride layers. It enables flexible and repeatable writing and erasing of charge doping in graphene with visible light. We demonstrate that this photo-induced doping maintains the high carrier mobility of the graphene-boron nitride (G/BN) heterostructure, which resembles the modulation doping technique used in semiconductor heterojunctions, and can be used to generate spatially-varying doping profiles such as p-n junctions. We show that this photo-induced doping arises from microscopically coupled optical and electrical responses of G/BN heterostructures, which includes optical excitation of defect transitions in boron nitride, electrical transport in graphene, and charge transfer between boron nitride and graphene.

HST and LAMOST discover a dual active galactic nucleus in J0038+4128

We report the discovery of a kiloparsec-scale dual active galactic nucleus (AGN) in J0038+4128. From the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Planetary Camera (WFPC2) images, we find two optical nuclei with a projection separation of 4.7 kpc (3.44 arcsec). The southern component (J0038+4128S) is spectroscopically observed with the HST Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph in the UV range and is found to be a Seyfert 1 galaxy with a broad Ly alpha emission line. The northern component (J0038+4128N) is spectroscopically observed during the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope (also named the Guoshoujing Telescope) pilot survey in the optical range. The observed line ratios as well as the consistency of redshift of the nucleus emission lines and the host galaxy's absorption lines indicate that J0038+4128N is a Seyfert 2 galaxy with narrow lines only. These results thus confirm that J0038+4128 is a Seyfert 1-Seyfert 2 AGN pair. The HST WFPC2 F336W/U-band image of J0038+4128 also reveals for the first time for a dual AGN system two pairs of bi-symmetric arms, as are expected from the numerical simulations of such system. Being one of a few confirmed kiloparsec-scale dual AGNs exhibiting a clear morphological structure of the host galaxies, J0038+4128 provides an unique opportunity to study the co-evolution of the host galaxies and their central supermassive black holes undergoing a merging process.

Energy Spectrum of Cosmic Protons and Helium Nuclei by a Hybrid Measurement at 4300 m a.s.l

The energy spectrum of cosmic Hydrogen and Helium nuclei has been measured, below the so-called "knee", by using a hybrid experiment with a wide field-of-view Cherenkov telescope and the Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) array of the ARGO-YBJ experiment at 4300 m above sea level. The Hydrogen and Helium nuclei have been well separated from other cosmic ray components by using a multi-parameter technique. A highly uniform energy resolution of about 25% is achieved throughout the whole energy range (100 TeV - 700 TeV). The observed energy spectrum is compatible with a single power law with index gamma=-2.63+/-0.06.

Electronic structure of the BaTi$_2$As$_2$O parent compound of the titanium based oxypnictide superconductor

The electronic structure of BaTi2As2O, a parent compound of the newly discovered titanium-based oxypnictide superconductors, is studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The electronic structure shows multi-orbital nature and possible three-dimensional character. An anomalous temperature-dependent spectral weight redistribution and broad lineshape indicate the incoherent nature of the spectral function. At the density-wave-like transition temperature around 200 K, a partial gap opens at the Fermi patches. These findings suggest that BaTi2As2O is likely a charge density wave material in the strong interaction regime.

Beta-plane turbulence: experiments with altimetry

Results from a new series of experiments on barotropic and baroclinic turbulent flows generated in a rotating tank with topographic beta-effect are presented. The velocity fields are measured by the Altimetric Imaging Velocimetry. The turbulent flows observed in the experiments develop zonal jets which are latent in a stationary forced-dissipative regime of the flow but become prominent in the decaying flow. The two-dimensional energy spectra of the flows exhibit the development of anisotropy towards zonal motions. The experiments demonstrate dual turbulent cascade with energy and enstrophy ranges. The frequency-wavenumber spectra reveal the presence of Rossby waves at low wavenumbers which are excited by the turbulent motions. The experimental results are compared with available theory of beta-plane turbulence.

Measurement of pretzelosity asymmetry of charged pion production in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering on a polarized $^3$He target

An experiment to measure single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of charged pions in deep-inelastic scattering on a transversely polarized $^3$He target was performed at Jefferson Lab in the kinematic region of $0.16<x<0.35$ and $1.4<Q^2<2.7$ ${\rm GeV^2}$. The pretzelosity asymmetries on $^3$He, which can be expressed as the convolution of the $h^\perp_{1T}$ transverse momentum dependent distribution functions and the Collins fragmentation functions in the leading order, were measured for the first time. Using the effective polarization approximation, we extracted the corresponding neutron asymmetries from the measured $^3$He asymmetries and cross-section ratios between the proton and $^3$He. Our results show that for both $π^{\pm}$ on $^3$He and on the neutron the pretzelosity asymmetries are consistent with zero within experimental uncertainties.

TeV gamma-ray survey of the Northern sky using the ARGO-YBJ detector

The ARGO-YBJ detector is an extensive air shower array that has been used to monitor the northern $γ$-ray sky at energies above 0.3 TeV from 2007 November to 2013 January. In this paper, we present the results of a sky survey in the declination band from $-10^{\circ}$ to $70^{\circ}$, using data recorded over the past five years. With an integrated sensitivity ranging from 0.24 to $\sim$1 Crab units depending on the declination, six sources have been detected with a statistical significance greater than 5 standard deviations. Several excesses are also reported as potential $γ$-ray emitters. The features of each source are presented and discussed. Additionally, $95\%$ confidence level upper limits of the flux from the investigated sky region are shown. Specific upper limits for 663 GeV $γ$-ray AGNs inside the ARGO-YBJ field of view are reported. The effect of the absorption of $γ$-rays due to the interaction with extragalactic background light is estimated.

Tuning of one-dimensional plasmons by Ag-Doping in Ag-$\sqrt{3}$-ordered atomic wires

We generated arrays of silver wires with a height of one atom and an average width of 11 atoms on the Si(557) surface via self assembly with local $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ order, and investigated the 1D plasmon formation in them using a combination of high resolution electron loss spectroscopy with low energy electron diffraction. As it turned out by a series of thermal desorption experiments followed by adding small concentrations of Ag, pure Ag-$\sqrt{3}$ ordered arrays of nanowires, separated by (113) facets, are intrinsically semi-metallic or semiconducting. Added Ag atoms in the range up to few percent of a monolayer result in 1D plasmon formation without any concentration threshold. The quantitative Ag concentration dependence of the plasmonic losses is clearly non-linear and fully compatible with a $\sqrt{n_e}$ dependence of the 1D plasmon. Adsorption of traces of residual gas can have a qualitatively similar doping effect.

Electronic Structure Reconstruction across the Antiferromagnetic Transition in TaFe$_{1.23}$Te$_3$ Spin Ladder

With angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we studied the electronic structure of TaFe$_{1.23}$Te$_3$, which is a two-leg spin ladder compound with a novel antiferromagnetic ground state. Quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface is observed, indicating sizable inter-ladder hopping, which would facilitate the in-plane ferromagnetic ordering through double exchange interactions. Moreover, an energy gap is not observed at the Fermi surface in the antiferromagnetic state. Instead, the shifts of various bands have been observed. Combining these observations with density-functional-theory calculations, we propose that the large scale reconstruction of the electronic structure, caused by the interactions between the coexisting itinerant electrons and local moments, is most likely the driving force behind the magnetic transition. TaFe$_{1.23}$Te$_3$ thus provides a simpler system that contains similar ingredients as the parent compounds of iron-based superconductors, which yet could be readily modeled and understood.

Asymptotics of neutron Cooper pair in weakly bound nuclei

Asymptotic form of neutron Cooper pair penetrating to the exterior of nuclear surface is investigated with the Bogoliubov theory for the superfluid Fermions. Based on a two-particle Schrödinger equation governing the Cooper pair wave function and systematic studies for both weakly bound and stable nuclei, the Cooper pair is shown to be spatially correlated even in the asymptotic large distance limit, and the penetration length of the pair condensate is revealed to be universally governed by the two-neutron separation energy $S_{2n}$ and the di-neutron mass $2m$.

Odd-even staggering of neutron radii for neutron-rich Mg isotopes in continuum Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory

The self-consistent continuum Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory formulated with Green's function technique in the coordinate space is developed to investigate odd-$A$ nuclei by incorporating the blocking effect. In a calculation performed with the SLy4 parameter for the neutron-rich Mg isotopes with $A=36-42$ around the neutron shell closure N=28, the odd-even staggering in the neutron rms radius, i.e., a larger value in $^{39}$Mg than those in $^{38}$Mg and $^{40}$Mg, is found. The large neutron radius in $^{39}$Mg is due to the blocking effect on the pair correlation energy, for which the configuration occupying the weakly-bound quasiparticle state $2p_{3/2}$ becomes the ground state instead of the $1f_{7/2}$ configuration. Performing systematic calculations with different Skyrme parameters we find that the ground state configuration for the odd-$A$ Mg isotopes, and hence the odd-even staggering of neutron radii, are sensitive to the details in the single-particle spectra, especially the gap between orbits $1f_{7/2}$ and $2p_{3/2}$.

Discovery of a Three-dimensional Topological Dirac Semimetal, Na3Bi

Three-dimensional (3D) topological Dirac semimetals (TDSs) represent a novel state of quantum matter that can be viewed as '3D graphene'. In contrast to two-dimensional (2D) Dirac fermions in graphene or on the surface of 3D topological insulators, TDSs possess 3D Dirac fermions in the bulk. The TDS is also an important boundary state mediating numerous novel quantum states, such as topological insulators, Weyl semi-metals, Axion insulators and topological superconductors. By investigating the electronic structure of Na3Bi with angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we discovered 3D Dirac fermions with linear dispersions along all momentum directions for the first time. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the 3D Dirac fermions in Na3Bi were protected by the bulk crystal symmetry. Our results establish that Na3Bi is the first model system of 3D TDSs, which can also serve as an ideal platform for the systematic study of quantum phase transitions between rich novel topological quantum states.

Detection-Loophole-Free Test of Quantum Nonlocality, and Applications

We present a source of entangled photons that violates a Bell inequality free of the "fair-sampling" assumption, by over 7 standard deviations. This violation is the first experiment with photons to close the detection loophole, and we demonstrate enough "efficiency" overhead to eventually perform a fully loophole-free test of local realism. The entanglement quality is verified by maximally violating additional Bell tests, testing the upper limit of quantum correlations. Finally, we use the source to generate secure private quantum random numbers at rates over 4 orders of magnitude beyond previous experiments.
