Search for Spin-Dependent Short-Range Force Using Optically Polarized $^3$He Gas

We propose a new method to detect short-range \textit{P-} and \textit{T-} violating interactions between nucleons, based on measuring the precession frequency shift of polarized $^3$He nuclei in the presence of an unpolarized mass. To maximize the sensitivity, a high-pressure $^3$He cell with thin glass windows (250 $\rmμm$) is used to minimize the distance between the mass and $^3$He. The magnetic field fluctuation is suppressed by using the $^3$He gas in a different region of the cell as a magnetometer. Systematic uncertainties from the magnetic properties of the mass are suppressed by flipping both the magnetic field and spin directions. Without any magnetic shielding, our result has already reached the sensitivity of the current best limit. With improvement in uniformity and stability of the field, we can further improve the sensitivity by two orders of magnitude over the force range from $10^{-4}-10^{-2}$ m.

Magnetic helicity transported by flux emergence and shuffling motions in Solar Active Region NOAA 10930

We present a new methodology which can determine magnetic helicity transport by the passage of helical magnetic field lines from sub-photosphere and the shuffling motions of foot-points of preexisting coronal field lines separately. It is well known that only the velocity component which is perpendicular to the magnetic field ($\upsilon_{\perp B}$) has contribution to the helicity accumulation. Here, we demonstrate that $\upsilon_{\perp B}$ can be deduced from horizontal motion and vector magnetograms, under a simple relation of $\upsilon_t = μ_t + \frac{\upsilon_n}{B_n} B_t$ as suggested by D$\acute{e}$moulin & Berger (2003). Then after dividing $\upsilon_{\perp B}$ into two components, as one is tangential and the other is normal to the solar surface, we can determine both terms of helicity transport. Active region (AR) NOAA 10930 is analyzed as an example during its solar disk center passage by using data obtained by the Spectro-Polarimeter and the Narrowband Filter Imager of Solar Optical Telescope on board Hinode. We find that in our calculation, the helicity injection by flux emergence and shuffling motions have the same sign. During the period we studied, the main contribution of helicity accumulation comes from the flux emergence effect, while the dynamic transient evolution comes from the shuffling motions effect. Our observational results further indicate that for this AR, the apparent rotational motion in the following sunspot is the real shuffling motions on solar surface.

Beam-Target Double Spin Asymmetry A_LT in Charged Pion Production from Deep Inelastic Scattering on a Transversely Polarized He-3 Target at 1.4<Q^2<2.7 GeV^2

We report the first measurement of the double-spin asymmetry $A_{LT}$ for charged pion electroproduction in semi\nobreakdash-inclusive deep\nobreakdash-inelastic electron scattering on a transversely polarized $^{3}$He target. The kinematics focused on the valence quark region, $0.16<x<0.35$ with $1.4<Q^{2}<2.7\,\textrm{GeV}^{2}$. The corresponding neutron $A_{LT}$ asymmetries were extracted from the measured $^{3}$He asymmetries and proton over $^{3}$He cross section ratios using the effective polarization approximation. These new data probe the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function $g_{1T}^{q}$ and therefore provide access to quark spin-orbit correlations. Our results indicate a positive azimuthal asymmetry for $π^{-}$ production on $^{3}$He and the neutron, while our $π^{+}$ asymmetries are consistent with zero.

Polarons in the radio-frequency spectrum of a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi gas

We measure radio-frequency spectra for a two-component mixture of a $^6$Li atomic Fermi gas in the quasi-two-dimensional regime. Near the Feshbach resonance, where the transverse Fermi energy is large compared to the confinement-induced dimer binding energies for the initial and final states, we find that the observed resonances do not correspond to transitions between confinement-induced dimers. The spectrum appears to be well-described by transitions between noninteracting polaron states in two dimensions.

Observation of TeV gamma rays from the Cygnus region with the ARGO-YBJ experiment

We report the observation of TeV gamma-rays from the Cygnus region using the ARGO-YBJ data collected from 2007 November to 2011 August. Several TeV sources are located in this region including the two bright extended MGRO J2019+37 and MGRO J2031+41. According to the Milagro data set, at 20 TeV MGRO J2019+37 is the most significant source apart from the Crab Nebula. No signal from MGRO J2019+37 is detected by the ARGO-YBJ experiment, and the derived flux upper limits at 90% confidence level for all the events above 600 GeV with medium energy of 3 TeV are lower than the Milagro flux, implying that the source might be variable and hard to be identified as a pulsar wind nebula. The only statistically significant (6.4 standard deviations) gamma-ray signal is found from MGRO J2031+41, with a flux consistent with the measurement by Milagro.

Realization of a Resonant Fermi Gas with a Large Effective Range

We have measured the interaction energy and three-body recombination rate for a two-component Fermi gas near a narrow Feshbach resonance and found both to be strongly energy dependent. Even for deBroglie wavelengths greatly exceeding the van der Waals length scale, the behavior of the interaction energy as a function of temperature cannot be described by atoms interacting via a contact potential. Rather, energy-dependent corrections beyond the scattering length approximation are required, indicating a resonance with an anomalously large effective range. For fields where the molecular state is above threshold, the rate of three-body recombination is enhanced by a sharp, two-body resonance arising from the closed-channel molecular state which can be magnetically tuned through the continuum. This narrow resonance can be used to study strongly correlated Fermi gases that simultaneously have a sizeable effective range and a large scattering length.

Robust nodal superconductivity induced by isovalent doping in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ and BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$

We present the ultra-low-temperature heat transport study of iron-based superconductors Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ and BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$. For optimally doped Ba(Fe$_{0.64}$Ru$_{0.36}$)$_2$As$_2$, a large residual linear term $κ_0/T$ at zero field and a $\sqrt{H}$ dependence of $κ_0(H)/T$ are observed, which provide strong evidences for nodes in the superconducting gap. This result demonstrates that the isovalent Ru doping can also induce nodal superconductivity, as P does in BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.67}$P$_{0.33}$)$_2$. Furthermore, in underdoped Ba(Fe$_{0.77}$Ru$_{0.23}$)$_2$As$_2$ and heavily underdoped BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.82}$P$_{0.18}$)$_2$, $κ_0/T$ manifests similar nodal behavior, which shows the robustness of nodal superconductivity in the underdoped regime and puts constraint on theoretical models.

Binary interactions on the calibrations of star formation rate

Using the evolutionary population synthesis (EPS) models with and without binary interactions (BIs), we present L_Ha, L_[OII], L_{i,UV} and L_FIR for Burst, S0, Sa-Sd and Irr galaxies, and present the calibrations of star formation rate (SFR) in terms of these diagnostics. By comparison, we find that BIs lower the SFR.vs.L_Ha and SFR.vs.L_[OII] conversion factors by ~0.2 dex. Moreover, BIs do not significantly vary the calibrations of SFR in terms of L_{i,UV}. In addition, BIs have little effect on the flux at 2800A. At last, the calibration of SFR from L_FIR is almost unaffected by BIs. This is caused by the fact that BIs almost do not affect the bolometric magnitudes of SPs. We also discuss the effects of initial mass function (IMF), gas-recycle assumption (GRA) and EPS models on these SFR calibrations. Comparing the results by using Salpeter (S55) IMF with those by using Miller & Scalo (MS79) IMF, we find that the SFR.vs.L_Ha and SFR.vs.L_[OII] conversion factors by using S55 IMF are greater by 0.4 and 0.2 dex than those by using MS79 IMF for the models with and without BIs, respectively. The SFR.vs.L_{i,UV} and SFR.vs.L_FIR conversion factors by using S55 IMF are larger by an amount of 0.2 dex than the corresponding ones by using MS79 IMF. The inclusion of GRA only lowers these SFR calibrations at faint SFR. Moreover, comparing the results when using different EPS models, we find that the differences in the SFR.vs.L_Ha and SFR.vs.L_[OII] conversion factors reach ~ 0.7 and 0.9 dex, the difference in the SFR.vs.L_FIR conversion factor reaches 0.4 and 0.8 dex, and the differences in the SFR.vs.L_{i,UV} conversion factors reach 0.3 and 0.2 dex when using S55 and NON-S55 IMF (including Cha03, K01, K93' and MS79 IMFs, partly caused by the difference in the IMF), respectively. At last, we give the conversion coefficients between SFR and these diagnostics for all models.

Properties and Performance of Two Wide Field of View Cherenkov/Fluorescence Telescope Array Prototypes

A wide field of view Cherenkov/fluorescence telescope array is one of the main components of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory project. To serve as Cherenkov and fluorescence detectors, a flexible and mobile design is adopted for easy reconfiguring of the telescope array. Two prototype telescopes have been constructed and successfully run at the site of the ARGO-YBJ experiment in Tibet. The features and performance of the telescopes are presented.

Symmetry breaking via orbital-dependent reconstruction of electronic structure in uniaxially strained NaFeAs

The superconductivity discovered in iron-pnictides is intimately related to a nematic ground state, where the C4 rotational symmetry is broken via the structural and magnetic transitions. We here study the nematicity in NaFeAs with the polarization dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A uniaxial strain was applied on the sample to overcome the twinning effect in the low temperature C2-symmetric state, and obtain a much simpler electronic structure than that of a twinned sample. We found the electronic structure undergoes an orbital-dependent reconstruction in the nematic state, primarily involving the dxy- and dyz-dominated bands. These bands strongly hybridize with each other, inducing a band splitting, while the dxz-dominated bands only exhibit an energy shift without any reconstruction. These findings suggest that the development of orbital-dependent spin polarization is likely the dominant force to drive the nematicity, while the ferro-orbital ordering between dxz and dyz orbitals can only play a minor role here.

CTL Model Update for System Modifications

Model checking is a promising technology, which has been applied for verification of many hardware and software systems. In this paper, we introduce the concept of model update towards the development of an automatic system modification tool that extends model checking functions. We define primitive update operations on the models of Computation Tree Logic (CTL) and formalize the principle of minimal change for CTL model update. These primitive update operations, together with the underlying minimal change principle, serve as the foundation for CTL model update. Essential semantic and computational characterizations are provided for our CTL model update approach. We then describe a formal algorithm that implements this approach. We also illustrate two case studies of CTL model updates for the well-known microwave oven example and the Andrew File System 1, from which we further propose a method to optimize the update results in complex system modifications.

Observational constraints on a Yang-Mills condensate dark energy model

Using the recently released Union2 compilation with 557 Type Ia supernovae, the shift parameter of cosmic microwave background given by the WMAP7 observations, and the baryon acoustic oscillation measurement from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we perform the $χ^2$ analysis on the 1-loop Yang-Mills condensate (YMC) dark energy model. The analysis has been made for both non-coupling and coupling models with $Ω_{m0}$ and $w_0$ being treated as free parameters. It is found that, $χ^2_{min}$ = 542.870 at $Ω_{m0}$ = 0.2701 and $w_0$ = -0.9945 for non-coupling model, and $χ^2_{min}$ = 542.790 at $γ$ = -0.015, $Ω_{m0}$ = 0.2715 and $w_0$ = -0.9969 for coupling model. Comparing with the $Λ$CDM model, the YMC model has a smaller $χ^2_{min}$, but it has greater values of the Bayesian and Akaike information criteria. Overall, YMC is as robust as $Λ$CDM.

Search for the Neutron Electric Dipole Moment: Contributions from the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory

A significant fraction of the research effort at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) focuses on weak interaction studies and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. One major effort is the development of a new experimental technique to search for the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) that offers the potential for a factor of 100 increase in sensitivity over existing measurements. The search for this moment has the potential to reveal new sources of time reversal (T) and charge-conjugation-and-parity (CP) violation and to challenge calculations that propose extensions to the Standard Model. We provide a brief overview of the experiment as a whole and discuss the work underway at TUNL as part of this effort.

Set Intersection and Consistency in Constraint Networks

In this paper, we show that there is a close relation between consistency in a constraint network and set intersection. A proof schema is provided as a generic way to obtain consistency properties from properties on set intersection. This approach not only simplifies the understanding of and unifies many existing consistency results, but also directs the study of consistency to that of set intersection properties in many situations, as demonstrated by the results on the convexity and tightness of constraints in this paper. Specifically, we identify a new class of tree convex constraints where local consistency ensures global consistency. This generalizes row convex constraints. Various consistency results are also obtained on constraint networks where only some, in contrast to all in the existing work, constraints are tight.

Millihertz Quasi-periodic Optical Oscillations in 4U 0614+091

We report the discovery of a 1mHz optical quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the candidate ultracompact low-mass X-ray binary 4U 0614+091. The ultra-low frequency QPO has no X-ray counterpart in contemporaneous RXTE/PCA data and is likely a signature of structure in the accretion disk. The QPO can be reasonably fitted with a single sine wave but with a phase jump part way through the observation, indicating that it is not coherent. We also identify a 48 min modulation, approximately consistent with the suggested orbital period of O'Brien (2005) and Shahbaz et al. (2008). If this is indeed orbital, it supports an identification of 4U 0614+091 as an ultra-compact source.

General Theory for the Ferroelectric Polarization Induced by Spin-Spiral Order

The ferroelectric polarization of triangular-lattice antiferromagnets induced by helical spin-spiral order is not explained by any existing model of magnetic-order-driven ferroelectricity. We resolve this problem by developing a general theory for the ferroelectric polarization induced by spin-spiral order and then by evaluating the coefficients needed to specify the general theory on the basis of density functional calculations. Our theory correctly describes the ferroelectricity of triangular-lattice antiferromagnets driven by helical spin-spiral order, and incorporates known models of magnetic-order-driven ferroelectricity as special cases.

Nodal superconducting gap structure in ferropnictide superconductor BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2

The superconducting gap is a pivotal character for a superconductor. While the cuprates and conventional phonon-mediated superconductors are characterized by distinct d-wave and s-wave pairing symmetry with nodal and nodeless gap distribution respectively, the superconducting gap distributions in iron-based superconductors are rather diversified. While nodeless gap distributions have been directly observed in Ba1-xKxFe2As2, BaFe2-xCoxAs2, KxFe2-ySe2, and FeTe1-xSex, the signatures of nodal superconducting gap have been reported in LaOFeP, LiFeP, KFe2As2, BaFe2(As1-xPx)2, BaFe2-xRuxAs2 and FeSe. We here report the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements on the superconducting gap structure of BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 in the momentum space, and particularly, the first direct observation of a circular line node on the largest hole Fermi surface around the Z point at the Brillouin zone boundary. Our data rules out the d-wave pairing origin of the nodal gap, and unify both the nodaland nodeless gaps in iron pnictides under the s\pm pairing symmetry.

High Precision Measurement of the Proton Elastic Form Factor Ratio $μ_pG_E/G_M$ at low $Q^2$

We report a new, high-precision measurement of the proton elastic form factor ratio μ_p G_E/G_M for the four-momentum transfer squared Q^2 = 0.3-0.7 (GeV/c)^2. The measurement was performed at Jefferson Lab (JLab) in Hall A using recoil polarimetry. With a total uncertainty of approximately 1%, the new data clearly show that the deviation of the ratio μ_p G_E/G_M from unity observed in previous polarization measurements at high Q^2 continues down to the lowest Q^2 value of this measurement. The updated global fit that includes the new results yields an electric (magnetic) form factor roughly 2% smaller (1% larger) than the previous global fit in this Q^2 range. We obtain new extractions of the proton electric and magnetic radii, which are ^(1/2)=0.875+/-0.010 fm and ^(1/2)=0.867+/-0.020 fm. The charge radius is consistent with other recent extractions based on the electron-proton interaction, including the atomic hydrogen Lamb shift measurements, which suggests a missing correction in the comparison of measurements of the proton charge radius using electron probes and the recent extraction from the muonic hydrogen Lamb shift.
