Weak-link behavior of grain boundaries in superconducting Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 bicrystals

We show that despite the low anisotropy, strong vortex pinning and high irreversibility field Hirr close to the upper critical field Hc2 of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2, the critical current density Jgb across [001] tilt grain boundaries (GBs) of thin film Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 bicrystals is strongly depressed, similar to high-Tc cuprates. Our results suggest that weak-linked GBs are characteristic of both cuprates and pnictides because of competing orders, low carrier density, and unconventional pairing symmetry.

Quantum Yang-Mills Condensate Dark Energy Models

We review the quantum Yang-Mills condensate (YMC) dark energy models. As the effective Yang-Mills Lagrangian is completely determined by the quantum field theory, there is no adjustable parameter in the model except the energy scale. In this model, the equation-of-state (EOS) of the YMC dark energy, $w_y > -1$ and $w_y < -1$, can both be naturally realized. By studying the evolution of various components in the model, we find that, in the early stage of the universe, dark energy tracked the evolution of the radiation, i.e. $w_y \to 1/3$. However, in the late stage, $w_y$ naturally runs to the critical state with $w_y = -1$, and the universe transits from matter-dominated into dark energy dominated stage only at recently $z \sim 0.3$. These characters are independent of the choice of the initial condition, and the cosmic coincidence problem is avoided in the models. We also find that, if the possible interaction between YMC and dust matter is considered, the late time attractor solution may exist. In this case, the EOS of YMC must evolve from $w_y>0$ into $w_y < -1$, which is slightly suggested by the observations. At the same time, the total EOS in the attractor solution is $w_{tot} = -1$, the universe being the de Sitter expansion in the late stage, and the cosmic big rip is naturally avoided. These features are all independent of the interacting forms.

Template engineering of Co-doped BaFe2As2 single-crystal thin films

Understanding new superconductors requires high-quality epitaxial thin films to explore intrinsic electromagnetic properties, control grain boundaries and strain effects, and evaluate device applications. So far superconducting properties of ferropnictide thin films appear compromised by imperfect epitaxial growth and poor connectivity of the superconducting phase. Here we report novel template engineering using single-crystal intermediate layers of (001) SrTiO3 and BaTiO3 grown on various perovskite substrates that enables genuine epitaxial films of Co-doped BaFe2As2 with high transition temperature (zero resistivity Tc of 21.5K), small transition widths (delta Tc = 1.3K), superior Jc of 4.5 MA/cm2 (4.2K, self field) and strong c-axis flux pinning. Implementing SrTiO3 or BaTiO3 templates to match the alkaline earth layer in the Ba-122 with the alkaline earth-oxygen layer in the templates opens new avenues for epitaxial growth of ferropnictides on multi-functional single crystal substrates. Beyond superconductors, it provides a framework for growing heteroepitaxial intermetallic compounds on various substrates by matching interfacial layers between templates and thin film overlayers.

Phase separation and ferroelectric ordering in charge frustrated LuFe2O4-x

The transmission electron microscopy observations of the charge ordering (CO) which governs the electronic polarization in LuFe2O4-x clearly show the presence of a remarkable phase separation at low temperatures. Two CO ground states are found to adopt the charge modulations of Q1 = (1/3, 1/3, 0) and Q2 = (1/3 + y, 1/3 + y, 3/2), respectively. Our structural study demonstrates that the incommensurately Q2-modulated state is chiefly stable in samples with relatively lower oxygen contents. Data from theoretical simulations of the diffraction suggest that both Q1- and Q2-modulated phases have ferroelectric ordering. The effects of oxygen concentration on the phase separation and electric polarization in this layered system are discussed.

Large-scale sidereal anisotropy of multi-TeV galactic cosmic rays and the heliosphere

We develop a model anisotropy best-fitting to the two-dimensional sky-map of multi-TeV galactic cosmic ray (GCR) intensity observed with the Tibet III air shower (AS) array. By incorporating a pair of intensity excesses in the hydrogen deflection plane (HDP) suggested by Gurnett et al., together with the uni-directional and bi-directional flows for reproducing the observed global feature, this model successfully reproduces the observed sky-map including the "skewed" feature of the excess intensity from the heliotail direction, whose physical origin has long remained unknown. These additional excesses are modeled by a pair of the northern and southern Gaussian distributions, each placed ~50 degree away from the heliotail direction. The amplitude of the southern excess is as large as ~0.2 %, more than twice the amplitude of the northern excess. This implies that the Tibet AS experiment discovered for the first time a clear evidence of the significant modulation of GCR intensity in the heliotail and the asymmetric heliosphere.

Evidence for Ground- and Excited-State Efimov Trimers in a Three-State Fermi Gas

We observe enhanced three-body recombination in an ultracold three-component $^6$Li Fermi gas with large but unequal scattering lengths attributable to an excited Efimov trimer state near the three-atom scattering threshold. We find excellent agreement between the measured three-body recombination rate and the recombination rate calculated in the zero-range approximation where the only free parameters are the Efimov parameters $κ_*$ and $η_*$. The value of $κ_*$ determined by the location of the Efimov resonance we observe at 895 G also predicts the locations of loss features previously observed near 130 and 500 G \cite{Jochim08,OHara09} suggesting that all three features are associated with universal Efimov trimer states. We also report on the first realization of a quantum degenerate three-state Fermi gas with approximate SU(3) symmetry.

Cocommutative Calabi-Yau Hopf algebras and deformations

The Calabi-Yau property of cocommutative Hopf algebras is discussed by using the homological integral, a recently introduced tool for studying infinite dimensional AS-Gorenstein Hopf algebras. It is shown that the skew-group algebra of a universal enveloping algebra of a finite dimensional Lie algebra $\g$ with a finite subgroup $G$ of automorphisms of $\g$ is Calabi-Yau if and only if the universal enveloping algebra itself is Calabi-Yau and $G$ is a subgroup of the special linear group $SL(\g)$. The Noetherian cocommutative Calabi-Yau Hopf algebras of dimension not larger than 3 are described. The Calabi-Yau property of Sridharan enveloping algebras of finite dimensional Lie algebras is also discussed. We obtain some equivalent conditions for a Sridharan enveloping algebra to be Calabi-Yau, and then partly answer a question proposed by Berger. We list all the nonisomorphic 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau Sridharan enveloping algebras.

Simulation of the cosmic ray tau neutrino telescope (CRTNT) experiment

A tau lepton can be produced in a charged current interaction by cosmic ray tau neutrino with material inside a mountain. If it escapes from the mountain, it will decay and initiate a shower in the air, which can be detected by an air shower fluorescence/Cherenkov light detector. Designed according to such a principle, the Cosmic Ray Tau Neutrino Telescope (CRTNT) experiment, located at the foothill of Mt. Balikun in Xinjiang, China, will search for very high-energy cosmic tau neutrinos from energetic astrophysical sources by detecting those showers. This paper describes a Monte Carlo simulation for a detection of tau neutrino events by the CRTNT experiment. Ultra-high-energy cosmic ray events are also simulated to estimate the potential contamination. With the CRTNT experiment composed of four detector stations, each covering 64 by 14 degrees field of view, the expected event rates are 28.6, 21.9 and 4.7 per year assuming AGN neutrino flux according to Semikoz et. al. 2004, MPR AGN jet model and SDSS AGN core model, respectively. Null detection of such tau event by the CRTNT experiment in one year could set 90% C.L. upper limit at 19.9 (eV^-1 cm^-2 s^-1 sr^-1) for E^-2 neutrino spectrum.

Controlling spin current in a trapped Fermi gas

We study fundamental features of spin current in a very weakly interacting Fermi gas of $^6$Li. By creating a spin current and then reversing its flow, we demonstrate control of the spin current. This reversal is predicted by a spin vector evolution equation in energy representation, which shows how the spin and energy of individual atoms become correlated in the nearly undamped regime of the experiments. The theory provides a simple physical description of the spin current and explains both the large amplitude and the slow temporal evolution of the data. Our results have applications in studying and controlling fundamental spin interactions and spin currents in ultra-cold gases.

Measurement of the Flux of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays by the Stereo Technique

The High Resolution Fly's Eye experiment has measured the flux of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays using the stereoscopic air fluorescence technique. The HiRes experiment consists of two detectors that observe cosmic ray showers via the fluorescence light they emit. HiRes data can be analyzed in monocular mode, where each detector is treated separately, or in stereoscopic mode where they are considered together. Using the monocular mode the HiRes collaboration measured the cosmic ray spectrum and made the first observation of the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff. In this paper we present the cosmic ray spectrum measured by the stereoscopic technique. Good agreement is found with the monocular spectrum in all details.

Approximate Analytic Spectra of Reionized CMB Anisotropies and Polarization generated by Relic Gravitational Waves

We present an approximate, analytical calculation of the reionized spectra $C_l^{XX}$ of cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) anisotropies and polarizations generated by relic gravitational waves (RGWs). Three simple models of reionization are explored, whose visibility functions are fitted by gaussian type of functions as approximations. We have derived the analytical polarization $β_l$ and temperature anisotropies $α_l$, both consisting of two terms proportional to RGWs at the decoupling and at the reionization as well. The explicit dependence of $β_l$ and $α_l$ upon the reionization time $η_r$, the duration $Δη_r$, and the optical depth $κ_r$ are demonstrated. Moreover, $β_l$ and $α_l$ contain $κ_r$ in different coefficients, and the polarization spectra $C_l^{EE}$ are $C_l^{BB}$ are more sensitive probes of reionization than $C_l^{TT}$. These results facilitate examination of the reionization effects, in particular, the degeneracies of $κ_r$ with the normalization amplitude and with the initial spectral index of RGWs. It is also found that reionization also causes a $κ_r$-dependent shift $Δl\sim 20$ of the zero multipole $l_0$ of $C_l^{TE}$, an effect that should be included in order to detect the traces of RGWs. Compared with numerical results, the analytical $C_l^{XX}$ as approximation have the limitation. For the primary peaks in the range $l\simeq (30, 600)$, the error is $\le 3%$ in three models. In the range $l < 20$ for the reionization bumps, the error is $\le 15%$ for $C_l^{EE}$ and $C_l^{BB}$ in the two extended reionization models, and $C_l^{TT}$ and $C_l^{TE}$ have much larger departures for $l<10$. The bumps in the sudden reionization model are too low.

Hidden Symmetry and Mutiferroicity in a Triangular Spin Lattice With Proper-Screw-Spin Chain Order

The multiferroicity in a triangular spin lattice with proper-screw-spin chain order was explored by performing density functional calculations for AgCrO2 and analyzing the symmetry of the magnetic structure of the triangular spin lattice. Strong geometric spin frustration exists within and between CrO2 layers, and the ferroelectric polarization originates from the spiral-spin chain structures propagating across the proper-screw-spin chains. The triangular spin lattice can have ferroelectric polarization parallel to its mirror plane due to hidden symmetry.

Inelastic Collisions of a Fermi Gas in the BEC-BCS Crossover

We report the measurement of inelastic three-body and two-body collisional decay rates for a two-component Fermi gas of $^6$Li, which are highly suppressed by the Pauli exclusion principle. Our measurements are made in the BEC-BCS crossover regime, near the two-body collisional (Feshbach) resonance. At high temperature (energy) the data shows a dominant three-body decay process, which is studied as a function of bias magnetic field. At low energy, the data shows a coexistence of two-body and three-body decay processes near and below the Feshbach resonance. Below resonance, the observed two-body inelastic decay can arise from molecule-atom and molecule-molecule collisions. We suggest that at and above resonance, an effective two-body decay rate arises from collisions between atoms and correlated (Cooper) pairs that can exist at sufficiently low temperature.

Approximate and pseudo-amenability of various classes of Banach algebras

We continue the investigation of notions of approximate amenability that were introduced in work of the second and third authors. It is shown that every boundedly approximately contractible Banach algebra has a bounded approximate identity. Among our other results, it is shown that the Fourier algebra of the free group on two generators is not approximately amenable. Further examples are obtained of ${\ell}^1$-semigroup algebras which are approximately amenable but not amenable; using these, we show that bounded approximate amenability need not imply sequential approximate amenability. Results are also given for Segal subalgebras of $L^1(G)$, where $G$ is a locally compact group, and the algebras $PF_p(Γ)$ of $p$-pseudofunctions on a discrete group $Γ$ (of which the reduced $C^*$-algebra is a special case).

Interplay between Jahn-Teller instability, uniaxial magnetism and ferroelectricity in Ca3CoMnO6

Ca3CoMnO6 is composed of CoMnO6 chains made up of face-sharing CoO6 trigonal prisms and MnO6 octahedra. The structural, magnetic, and ferroelectric properties of this compound were investigated on the basis of density functional theory calculations. Ca3CoMnO6 is found to undergo a Jahn-Teller distortion associated with the CoO6 trigonal prisms containing high-spin Co2+ (d7) ions, which removes the C3 rotational symmetry and hence uniaxial magnetism. However, the Jahn-Teller distortion is not strong enough to fully quench the orbital moment of the high-spin Co2+ ions thereby leading to an electronic state with substantial magnetic anisotropy. The Jahn-Teller distorted Ca3CoMnO6 in the magnetic ground state with up-up-down-down spin arrangement is predicted to have electric polarizations much greater than experimentally observed. Implications of the discrepancy between theory and experiment were discussed.

Proximity of LaOFeAs to a magnetic instability

We investigate the effect of external pressure on the Fe magnetic moment in undoped LaOFeAs within the framework of density functional theory and show that this system is close to a magnetic instability: The Fe moment is found to drop by nearly a factor of 3 within a pressure range of $\pm$ 5 GPa around the calculated equilibrium volume. While the Fe moments show an unusually strong sensitivity to the spin arrangement (type of anti-ferromagnetic structure), the low temperature structural distortion is found to have only a minor influence on them. Analysis of the Fermi surface topology and nesting features shows that these properties change very little up to pressures of at least 10 GPa. We discuss the magnetic instability in terms of the itinerancy of this system.

Electron Temperatures of Planetary Nebulae Determined from the He I Discontinuities

We have used the He I discontinuities at 3421A to determine the electron temperatures, designated Te(He I), for a sample of five Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe). We compared Te(He I) with the electron temperatures derived from the hydrogen Balmer jump at 3646A, designated Te(H I), and found that Te(He I) are generally lower than Te(H I). There are two possible interpretations, a) the presence of substantial He+2 zone, or b) the presence of hydrogen-deficient cold clumps within diffuse nebulae. A series of photoionization models were constructed to test the two scenarios. We found that the observed Te(He I)/Te(H I) discrepancies are beyond the predictions of chemically homogeneous models. Our modelling shows that the presence of a small amount of hydrogen-deficient inclusions seems to be able to reproduce the observed intensities of He I discontinuities. We stress the value of He I discontinuities in investigating nebular physical conditions. Albeit with some observational and technical limitations, He I discontinuities should be considered in future modelling work.

Probing the Symmetry Energy with Heavy Ions

Constraints on the EoS for symmetric matter (equal neutron and proton numbers) at supra-saturation densities have been extracted from energetic collisions of heavy ions. Collisions of neutron-deficient and neutron-rich heavy ions now provide initial constraints on the EoS of neutron-rich matter at sub-saturation densities. Comparisons are made to other available constraints.
