Identification of a $9/2^-$[505] isomer in the neutron-rich $^{193}$Os nucleus

The neutron rich nucleus $^{193}$Os was produced in the $^{192}$Os($^{7}$Li,$^{6}$Li)$^{193}$Os reaction. An isomeric state based on the $9/2^-$[505] nilsson orbital was identified in the present work. Half-life of the isomeric state was extracted and discussed in terms of the $K$ quantum number. Level scheme built on the isomeric state was proposed based on the experimental data.

SuperB Technical Design Report

In this Technical Design Report (TDR) we describe the SuperB detector that was to be installed on the SuperB e+e- high luminosity collider. The SuperB asymmetric collider, which was to be constructed on the Tor Vergata campus near the INFN Frascati National Laboratory, was designed to operate both at the Upsilon(4S) center-of-mass energy with a luminosity of 10^{36} cm^{-2}s^{-1} and at the tau/charm production threshold with a luminosity of 10^{35} cm^{-2}s^{-1}. This high luminosity, producing a data sample about a factor 100 larger than present B Factories, would allow investigation of new physics effects in rare decays, CP Violation and Lepton Flavour Violation. This document details the detector design presented in the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) in 2007. The R&D and engineering studies performed to arrive at the full detector design are described, and an updated cost estimate is presented. A combination of a more realistic cost estimates and the unavailability of funds due of the global economic climate led to a formal cancelation of the project on Nov 27, 2012.

$γ$-ray linear polarization measurements and $(g_{9/2})^{-3}$ neutron alignment in $^{91}$Ru

Linear polarization measurements have been performed for $γ$-rays in $^{91}$Ru produced with the $^{58}$Ni($^{36}$Ar, $2p1n$$γ$)$^{91}$Ru reaction at a beam energy of 111 MeV. The EXOGAM Ge clover array has been used to measure the $γ$-$γ$ coincidences, $γ$-ray linear polarization and $γ$-ray angular distributions. The polarization sensitivity of the EXOGAM clover detectors acting as Compton polarimeters has been determined in the energy range 0.3$-$1.3 MeV. Several transitions have been observed for the first time. Measurements of linear polarization and angular distribution have led to the firm assignments of spin differences and parity of high-spin states in $^{91}$Ru. More specifically, calculations using a semi-empirical shell model were performed to understand the structures of the first and second (21/2$^{+}$) and (17/2$^{+}$) levels. The results are in good agreement with the experimental data, supporting the interpretation of the non yrast (21/2$^{+}$) and (17/2$^{+}$) states in terms of the $J_{\rm max}$ and $J_{\rm max}-2$ members of the seniority-three $ν(g_{9/2})^{-3}$ multiplet.

Thermodynamic evidence for pressure-induced bulk superconductivity in the Fe-As pnictide superconductor CaFe2As2

We report specific-heat and resistivity experiments performed in parallel in a Bridgman-type of pressure cell in order to investigate the nature of pressure-induced superconductivity in the iron pnictide compound CaFe2As2. The presence of a pronounced specific-heat anomaly at Tc reveals a bulk nature of the superconducting state. The thermodynamic transition temperature differs dramatically from the onset of the resistive transition. Our data indicates that superconductivity occurs in the vicinity of a crystallographic phase transition. We discuss the discrepancy between the two methods as caused by strain-induced superconducting precursors formed above the bulk thermodynamic transition due to the vicinity of the structural instability.

Discovery of a new isomeric state in $^{68}$Ni: Evidence for a highly-deformed proton intruder state

We report on the observation of a new isomeric state in $^{68}$Ni. We suggest that the newly observed state at 168(1) keV above the first 2$^+$ state is a $π(2p-2h)$ 0$^{+}$ state across the major Z=28 shell gap. Comparison with theoretical calculations indicates a pure proton intruder configuration and the deduced low-lying structure of this key nucleus suggests a possible shape coexistence scenario involving a highly deformed state.

Study of the K0(L) --> pi0 pi0 nu nu-bar decay

The rare decay K0(L) --> pi0 pi0 nu nu-bar was studied with the E391a detector at the KEK 12-GeV proton synchrotron. Based on 9.4 x 10^9 K0L decays, an upper limit of 8.1 x 10^{-7} was obtained for the branching fraction at 90% confidence level. We also set a limit on the K0(L) --> pi0 pi0 X (X --> invisible particles) process; the limit on the branching fraction varied from 7.0 x 10^{-7} to 4.0 x 10^{-5} for the mass of X ranging from 50 MeV/c^2 to 200 MeV/c^2.

The TIANSHAN Radio Experiment for Neutrino Detection

An antenna array devoted to the autonomous radio-detection of high energy cosmic rays is being deployed on the site of the 21 cm array radio telescope in XinJiang, China. Thanks in particular to the very good electromagnetic environment of this remote experimental site, self-triggering on extensive air showers induced by cosmic rays has been achieved with a small scale prototype of the foreseen antenna array. We give here a detailed description of the detector and present the first detection of extensive air showers with this prototype.

Search for the decay $K_L^0 \rightarrow 3γ$

We performed a search for the decay $K_L^0 \rightarrow 3γ$ with the E391a detector at KEK. In the data accumulated in 2005, no event was observed in the signal region. Based on the assumption of $K_L^0 \rightarrow 3γ$ proceeding via parity-violation, we obtained the single event sensitivity to be $(3.23\pm0.14)\times10^{-8}$, and set an upper limit on the branching ratio to be $7.4\times10^{-8}$ at the 90% confidence level. This is a factor of 3.2 improvement compared to the previous results. The results of $K_L^0 \rightarrow 3γ$ proceeding via parity-conservation were also presented in this paper.

Nanosize confinement induced enhancement of spontaneous polarization in a ferroelectric nanowire

We theoretically showed that the spontaneous polarization in ferroelectric (FE) nanowires (NWs) can be considerably enhanced due to the nanosize confinement by the first-principles calculations. The spontaneous polarization along the wire direction in a fully-relaxed PbTiO3 NW with 1.8 nm diameter is 1.26 times higher than that of bulk counterpart. The tension induced by NW surface curvature counteracts the near-surface depolarizing effect and meanwhile leads to the unusual enhancement of spontaneous polarization. These findings indicated that FE NWs can be promising in the applications of nanodevices.

Search for a light pseudoscalar particle in the decay $K^0_L \to π^0 π^0 X$

We performed a search for a light pseudoscalar particle $X$ in the decay $K_L^0->pi0pi0X$, $X->γγ$ with the E391a detector at KEK. Such a particle with a mass of 214.3 MeV/$c^2$ was suggested by the HyperCP experiment. We found no evidence for $X$ and set an upper limit on the product branching ratio for $K_L^0->pi0pi0X$, $X->γγ$ of $2.4 \times 10^{-7}$ at the 90% confidence level. Upper limits on the branching ratios in the mass region of $X$ from 194.3 to 219.3 MeV/$c^2$ are also presented.

Mitigation of Pulsed Interference to Redshifted HI and OH Observations between 960 and 1215 MHz

The neutral hydrogen 21-cm spectral line (1420.4 MHz) and the four 18-cm lines of the hydroxyl molecule (1612-1720 MHz) are observable at redshifts which put their measured line frequencies well below their protected frequency bands. Part of the redshift ranges (z = 0.171-0.477 for HI and z = 0.37-0.73 for OH) fall in the 960 to 1215 MHz band that is allocated to aircraft navigation. Most of the signals in this band are pulsed emissions of low duty cycle so much of the time between pulses is interference free. This paper outlines the structure and measured properties of signals in this band and demonstrates a signal processing strategy that is effective at removing the pulsed signals from spectra at sensitivities produced by several hours of integration.

Measurement of the $B^0 -\bar{B}^0$ mixing rate with $B^0(\bar{B}^0) \to D^{*\mp} π^{\pm}$ partial reconstruction

We report a measurement of the $B^0-\bar{B}^0$ mixing parameter $Δm_d$ based on a $\rm 29.1~fb^{-1}$ sample of $Υ(4S)$ resonance decays collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric $e^+ e^-$ collider. We use events with a partially reconstructed $B^0(\bar{B}^0) \to D^{*\mp} π^{\pm}$ candidate and where the flavor of the accompanying $B$ meson is identified by the charge of the lepton from a $B^0(\bar{B}^0) \to X^{\mp} \ell^{\pm} ν$ decay. The proper-time difference between the two $B$ mesons is determined from the distance between the two decay vertices. From a simultaneous fit to the proper-time distributions for the same-flavor ($B^0(\bar{B}^0)$, $\ell^{\pm}$) and opposite-flavor ($B^0(\bar{B}^0)$, $\ell^{\mp}$) event samples, we measure the mass difference between the two mass eigenstates of the neutral $B$ meson to be $Δm_d$= $(0.509 \pm 0.017~(\rm stat) \pm 0.020~(\rm syst))~ps^{-1}$.

A Detailed Monte-Carlo Simulation for the Belle TOF System

We have developed a detailed Monte Carlo simulation program for the Belle TOF system. Based on GEANT simulation, it takes account of all physics processes in the TOF scintillation counters and readout electronics. The simulation reproduces very well the performance of the Belle TOF system, including the dE/dx response, the time walk effect, the time resolution, and the hit efficiency due to beam background. In this report, we will describe the Belle TOF simulation program in detail.
