Multi-threaded prominence oscillations triggered by a coronal shock wave

In this work, we study the causal relations between a localised energy release and a remote prominence oscillation, where the prominence has a realistic thread-like structure. We used an open source magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code known as MPI-AMRVAC to create a multithreaded prominence body. We introduced an additional energy source from which a shock wave originates, thereby inducing prominence oscillation. We studied two cases with different source amplitudes to analyze its effect on the oscillations. Our results show that the frequently used pendulum model does not suffice to fully estimate the period of the prominence oscillation, in addition to showing that the influence of the source and the thread-like prominence structure needs to be taken into account. Repeated reflections and transmissions of the initial shock wave occur at the specific locations of multiple high-temperature and high-density gradients in the domain. This includes the left and right transition region (TR) located at the footpoints of the magnetic arcade, as well as the various transition regions between the prominence and the corona (PCTR). This results in numerous interferences of compressional waves. They contribute to the restoring forces of the oscillation, causing the period to deviate from the expected pendulum model, in addition to leading to differences in attributed damping or even growth in amplitude between the various threads. Along with the global longitudinal motion that result from the shock impact, small-scale transverse oscillations are also evident. Multiple high-frequency oscillations represent the propagation of magnetoacoustic waves. The damping we see is linked to the conversion of energy and its exchange with the surrounding corona. Our simulations demonstrate the exchange of energy between different threads and their different modes of oscillation.

Non-detection of $^6$Li in Spite plateau stars with ESPRESSO

The detection of $^6$Li in Spite plateau stars contradicts the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis prediction, known as the second cosmological lithium problem. We measure the isotopic ratio $^6$Li/$^7$Li in three Spite plateau stars: HD 84937, HD 140283, and LP 815-43. We use 3D NLTE radiative transfer and for the first time apply this to high resolution, high-S/N data from the ultra-stable VLT/ESPRESSO spectrograph. These are amongst the best spectra ever taken of any metal-poor stars. As the measurement of $^6$Li/$^7$Li is degenerate with other physical stellar parameters, we employ Markov chain Monte Carlo methods to find the probability distributions of measured parameters. As a test of systematics we also use three different fitting methods. We do not detect $^6$Li in any of the three stars, and find consistent results between our different methods. We estimate 2$σ$ upper limits to $^6$Li/$^7$Li of 0.7%, 0.6%, and 1.7% respectively for HD 84937, HD 140283, and LP 815-43. Our results indicate that there is no second cosmological lithium problem, as there is no evidence of $^6$Li in Spite Plateau stars.

Theoretical analysis of a Polarized Two-Photon Michelson Interferometer with Broadband Chaotic Light

In this paper, we study two-photon interference of broadband chaotic light in a Michelson interferometer with two-photon-absorption detector. The theoretical analysis is based on two-photon interference and Feynman path integral theory. The two-photon coherence matrix is introduced to calculate the second-order interference pattern with polarizations being taken into account. Our study shows that the polarization is another dimension, as well as time and space, to tune the interference pattern in the two-photon interference process. It can act as a switch to manipulate the interference process and open the gate to many new experimental schemes.

Design, Construction, and Test of the Gas Pixel Detectors for the IXPE Mission

Due to be launched in late 2021, the Imaging X-Ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) is a NASA Small Explorer mission designed to perform polarization measurements in the 2-8 keV band, complemented with imaging, spectroscopy and timing capabilities. At the heart of the focal plane is a set of three polarization-sensitive Gas Pixel Detectors (GPD), each based on a custom ASIC acting as a charge-collecting anode. In this paper we shall review the design, manufacturing, and test of the IXPE focal-plane detectors, with particular emphasis on the connection between the science drivers, the performance metrics and the operational aspects. We shall present a thorough characterization of the GPDs in terms of effective noise, trigger efficiency, dead time, uniformity of response, and spectral and polarimetric performance. In addition, we shall discuss in detail a number of instrumental effects that are relevant for high-level science analysis -- particularly as far as the response to unpolarized radiation and the stability in time are concerned.

Tuning magnetic and transport properties in quasi-2D (Mn$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ single crystals

We report an optimized chemical vapor transport method to grow single crystals of (Mn$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ where x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 & 1. Single crystals up to 4\,mm\,$\times$\,3\,mm\,$\times$\,200\,$μ$m were obtained by this method. As-grown crystals characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy, and powder x-ray diffraction measurements. The structural characterization shows that all crystals crystallize in monoclinic symmetry with the space group $C2/m$ (No. 12). We have further investigated the magnetic properties of this series of single crystals. The magnetic measurements of the all as-grown single crystals show long-range antiferromagnetic order along all crystallographic principal axes. Overall, the Néel temperature TN is non-monotonous, with increasing $Ni^{2+}$ doping the temperature of the antiferromagnetic phase transition first decreases from 80 K for pristine Mn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ (x = 0) up to x = 0.5, and then increases again to 155 K for pure Ni$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ (x = 1). The magnetic anisotropy switches from out-of-plane to in-plane as a function of composition in (Mn$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ series. Transport studies under hydrostatic pressure on the parent compound Mn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ evidence an insulator-metal transition at an applied critical pressure of ~22 GPa

Revisiting quark and gluon polarization in the proton at the EIC

We present a comprehensive impact study of future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) data for parity-conserving and parity-violating polarization asymmetries on quark and gluon helicity distributions in the proton. The study, which is based on the JAM Monte Carlo global QCD analysis framework, explores the role of the extrapolation uncertainty and SU(3) flavor symmetry constraints in the simulated double-spin asymmetry, $A_{LL}$, at small parton momentum fractions $x$ and its effect on the extracted parton polarizations. We find that different assumptions about $A_{LL}$ extrapolations and SU(3) symmetry can have significant consequences for the integrated quark and gluon polarizations, for polarized proton, deuteron and $^3$He beams. For the parity-violating asymmetry, $A_{UL}$, we study the potential impact on the polarized strange quark distribution with different extrapolations of $A_{UL}$, finding the constraining power to be ultimately limited by the EIC machine luminosity.

This article comes up with an intraday trading strategy under T+1 using Markowitz optimization and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) with published stock data obtained from the Shenzhen Stock Exchange and Shanghai Stock Exchange. The empirical results reveal the profitability of Markowitz portfolio optimization and validate the intraday stock price prediction using MLP. The findings further combine the Markowitz optimization, an MLP with the trading strategy, to clarify this strategy's feasibility.

Timing performance of a multi-pad PICOSEC-Micromegas detector prototype

The multi-pad PICOSEC-Micromegas is an improved detector prototype with a segmented anode, consisting of 19 hexagonal pads. Detailed studies are performed with data collected in a muon beam over four representative pads. We demonstrate that such a device, scalable to a larger area, provides excellent time resolution and detection efficiency. As expected from earlier single-cell device studies, we measure a time resolution of approximately 25 picoseconds for charged particles hitting near the anode pad centers, and up to 30 picoseconds at the pad edges. Here, we study in detail the effect of drift gap thickness non-uniformity on the timing performance and evaluate impact position based corrections to obtain a uniform timing response over the full detector coverage.

Modeling the Timing Characteristics of the PICOSEC Micromegas Detector

The PICOSEC Micromegas detector can time the arrival of Minimum Ionizing Particles with a sub-25 ps precision. A very good timing resolution in detecting single photons is also demonstrated in laser beams. The PICOSEC timing resolution is determined mainly by the drift field. The arrival time of the signal and the timing resolution vary with the size of the pulse amplitude. Detailed simulations based on GARFIELD++ reproduce the experimental PICOSEC timing characteristics. This agreement is exploited to identify the microscopic physical variables, which determine the observed timing properties. In these studies, several counter-intuitive observations are made for the behavior of such microscopic variables. In order to gain insight on the main physical mechanisms causing the observed behavior, a phenomenological model is constructed and presented. The model is based on a simple mechanism of "time-gain per interaction" and it employs a statistical description of the avalanche evolution. It describes quantitatively the dynamical and statistical properties of the microscopic quantities, which determine the PICOSEC timing characteristics, in excellent agreement with the simulations. In parallel, it offers phenomenological explanations for the behavior of these microscopic variables. The formulae expressing this model can be used as a tool for fast and reliable predictions, provided that the input parameter values (e.g. drift velocities) are known for the considered operating conditions.

3D NLTE spectral line formation of lithium in late-type stars

Accurately known stellar lithium abundances may be used to shed light on a variety of astrophysical phenomena such as Big Bang nucleosynthesis, radial migration, ages of stars and stellar clusters, and planet engulfment events. We present a grid of synthetic lithium spectra that are computed in non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) across the STAGGER grid of three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic stellar atmosphere models. This grid covers three Li lines at 610.4 nm, 670.8 nm, and 812.6 nm for stellar parameters representative of FGK-type dwarfs and giants, spanning $T_{\rm{eff}}=4000$-7000 K, $\log g=1.5$-5.0, $[\rm{Fe}/\rm{H}] = -4.0$-0.5, and $\textrm{A(Li)} = -0.5$-4.0. We find that our abundance corrections are up to 0.15 dex more negative than in previous work, due to a previously overlooked NLTE effect of blocking of UV lithium lines by background opacities, which has important implications for a wide range of science cases. We derive a new 3D NLTE solar abundance of $\textrm{A(Li)} = 0.96 \pm 0.05$, which is 0.09 dex lower than the commonly used value. We make our grids of synthetic spectra and abundance corrections publicly available through the Breidablik package. This package includes methods for accurately interpolating our grid to arbitrary stellar parameters through methods based on Kriging (Gaussian process regression) for line profiles, and MLP (Multi-Layer Perceptrons, a class of fully connected feedforward neural networks) for NLTE corrections and 3D NLTE abundances from equivalent widths, achieving interpolation errors of the order 0.01 dex.

A resistive ACHINOS multi-anode structure with DLC coating for spherical proportional counters

The spherical proportional counter is a gaseous detector used in a variety of applications, including direct dark matter and neutrino-less double beta decay searches. The ACHINOS multianode structure is a read-out technology that overcomes the limitations of single-anode read-out structures for large-size detectors and operation under high pressure. A resistive ACHINOS is presented, where the 3D printed central component is coated in a Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) layer. The production and testing of the structure, in terms of stability and resolution, is described. Further applications in fundamental physics and industry are also discussed.

Measurement of proton-proton elastic scattering into the Coulomb region at $\text{P}_\text{beam}$ = 2.5, 2.8 and 3.2 GeV/c

The proton--proton elastic differential cross section at very small four momentum transfer squared has been measured at three different incident proton momenta in the range of 2.5 to 3.2 GeV/c by detecting the recoil proton at polar angles close to $90^\circ$. The measurement was performed at COSY with the KOALA detector covering the Coulomb-nuclear interference region. The total cross section $σ_\text{tot}$, which has been determined precisely, is consistent with previous measurements. The values of the slope parameter $B$ and the relative real amplitude ratio $ρ$ determined in this experiment alleviate the lack of data in the relevant energy region. This precise data on $ρ$ might be an important check for a new dispersion analysis.

A cryogenic continuously rotating half-wave plate for the POLARBEAR-2b cosmic microwave background receiver

We present the design and laboratory evaluation of a cryogenic continuously rotating half-wave plate (CHWP) for the POLARBEAR-2b (PB-2b) cosmic microwave background (CMB) receiver, the second installment of the Simons Array. PB-2b will observe at 5,200 m elevation in the Atacama Desert of Chile in two frequency bands centered at 90 and 150 GHz. In order to suppress atmospheric 1/f noise and mitigate systematic effects that arise when differencing orthogonal detectors, PB-2b modulates linear sky polarization using a CHWP rotating at 2 Hz. The CHWP has a 440 mm clear aperture diameter and is cooled to $\approx$ 50 K in the PB-2b receiver cryostat. It consists of a low-friction superconducting magnetic bearing (SMB) and a low-torque synchronous electromagnetic motor, which together dissipate < 2 W. During cooldown, a grip-and-release mechanism centers the rotor to < 0.5 mm, and during continuous rotation, an incremental optical encoder measures the rotor angle with a noise level of 0.1 $\mathrm{μrad / \sqrt{Hz}}$. We discuss the experimental requirements for the PB-2b CHWP, the designs of its various subsystems, and the results of its evaluation in the laboratory. The presented CHWP has been deployed to Chile and is expected to see first light on PB-2b in 2020 or 2021.

Bimeron Clusters in Chiral Antiferromagnets

A mgnetic bimeron is an in-plane topological counterpart of a magnetic skyrmion. Despite the topological equivalence, their statics and dynamics could be distinct, making them attractive from the perspectives of both physics and spintronic applications. In this work, we investigate an antiferromagnetic (AFM) thin film with interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), and introduce the AFM bimeron cluster as a new form of topological quasi-particle. Bimerons demonstrate high current-driven mobility as generic AFM solitons, while featuring anisotropic and relativistic dynamics excited by currents with in-plane and out-of-plane polarizations, respectively. Moreover, these spin textures can absorb other bimeron solitons or clusters along the translational direction to acquire a wide range of Néel topological numbers. The clustering involves the rearrangement of topological structures, and gives rise to remarkable changes in static and dynamical properties. The merits of AFM bimeron clusters reveal a potential path to unify multi-bit data creation, transmission, storage and even topology-based computation within the same material system, and may stimulate innovative spintronic devices enabling new paradigms of data manipulations.

A measurement of the CMB E-mode angular power spectrum at subdegree scales from 670 square degrees of POLARBEAR data

We report a measurement of the E-mode polarization power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) using 150 GHz data taken from July 2014 to December 2016 with the POLARBEAR experiment. We reach an effective polarization map noise level of $32\,μ\mathrm{K}$-$\mathrm{arcmin}$ across an observation area of 670 square degrees. We measure the EE power spectrum over the angular multipole range $500 \leq \ell <3000$, tracing the third to seventh acoustic peaks with high sensitivity. The statistical uncertainty on E-mode bandpowers is $\sim 2.3 μ{\rm K}^2$ at $\ell \sim 1000$ with a systematic uncertainty of 0.5$μ{\rm K}^2$. The data are consistent with the standard $Λ$CDM cosmological model with a probability-to-exceed of 0.38. We combine recent CMB E-mode measurements and make inferences about cosmological parameters in $Λ$CDM as well as in extensions to $Λ$CDM. Adding the ground-based CMB polarization measurements to the Planck dataset reduces the uncertainty on the Hubble constant by a factor of 1.2 to $H_0 = 67.20 \pm 0.57 {\rm km\,s^{-1} \,Mpc^{-1}}$. When allowing the number of relativistic species ($N_{eff}$) to vary, we find $N_{eff} = 2.94 \pm 0.16$, which is in good agreement with the standard value of 3.046. Instead allowing the primordial helium abundance ($Y_{He}$) to vary, the data favor $Y_{He} = 0.248 \pm 0.012$. This is very close to the expectation of 0.2467 from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. When varying both $Y_{He}$ and $N_{eff}$, we find $N_{eff} = 2.70 \pm 0.26$ and $Y_{He} = 0.262 \pm 0.015$.

Absence of long-range order in an $XY$ pyrochlore antiferromagnet Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$

Rare-earth pyrochlores are known to exhibit exotic magnetic phenomena. We report a study of crystal growth and characterizations of a new rare-earth compound Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$, in which Al$^{3+}$ and Sb$^{5+}$ ions share the same positions with a random distribution. The magnetism are studied by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements at low temperatures down to several tens of milli-kelvin. Different from the other reported Er-based pyrochlores exhibiting distinct magnetically ordered states, a spin-freezing transition is detected in Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$ below 0.37 K, which is primarily ascribed to the inherent structural disorder. A cluster spin-glass state is proposed in view of the frequency dependence of the peak position in the ac susceptibility. In addition, the temperature and field dependence of thermal conductivity indicates rather strong spin fluctuations which is probably due to the phase competition.

Efficient quantum memory for single photon polarization qubits

A quantum memory, for storing and retrieving flying photonic quantum states, is a key interface for realizing long-distance quantum communication and large-scale quantum computation. While many experimental schemes of high storage-retrieval efficiency have been performed with weak coherent light pulses, all quantum memories for true single photons achieved so far have efficiencies far below 50%, a threshold value for practical applications. Here, we report the demonstration of a quantum memory for single-photon polarization qubits with an efficiency of >85% and a fidelity of >99 %, basing on balanced two-channel electromagnetically induced transparency in laser-cooled rubidium atoms. For the single-channel quantum memory, the optimized efficiency for storing and retrieving single-photon temporal waveforms can be as high as 90.6 %. Our result pushes the photonic quantum memory closer to its practical applications in quantum information processing.

The energy cascade at the turbulent/non-turbulent interface

Interscale energy transfers at the vicinity of the turbulent/non-turbulent interface are from small to large scales in directions close to the interface's tangent plane where motions are predominantly stretching, but from large to small scales in the other directions where motions are predominantly compressive and significantly correlated with square angular momentum. An important role in this predominance is played by the extreme compressive motions which can be significantly more likely than extreme stretching motions even where motions are on average stretching. The most intense interscale transfer rates and dissipation occur when the interface is as far as possible from the wake centreline.
