Unraveling Magneto-Phononic Coupling and Photoinduced Magnetic Control in Antiferromagnetic Kondo Semimetal CeBi

We report an ultrafast optical spectroscopy study on the coherent phonon dynamics in the topological semimetal CeBi and its nonmagnetic isostructural compound LaBi, revealing profound insights into their electronic and magnetic interactions. Both materials exhibit prominent $A_{1g}$ longitudinal optical phonons with characteristic anharmonic temperature dependencies. However, in CeBi, the $A_{1g}$ phonon frequency and amplitude show clear anomalies near its antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering temperatures ($T_{N1}$ $\simeq$ 25 K and $T_{N2}$ $\simeq$ 12 K), which unequivocally demonstrate strong magneto-phononic coupling. Crucially, in the AFM state at 4 K, CeBi exhibits a pump fluence threshold of $F_C$ $\approx$ 44 $μ$J/cm$^2$, above which the rate of phonon softening accelerates and the amplitude increases sharply. This unique threshold, absent in paramagnetic CeBi and LaBi, points to a photoinduced, non-thermal quenching of the AFM order. Our findings establish coherent phonons as highly sensitive probes of intertwined orders in heavy fermion systems, highlighting the transformative potential of ultrafast pulses in dynamically controlling magnetic states in correlated electron materials and paving the way for the manipulation of emergent quantum phases.

Exploring Intrinsic Magnetic Topological Insulators: The Case of EuIn$_2$As$_2$

In this study, ultrafast optical spectroscopy was employed to elucidate the intricate topological features of EuIn$_2$As$_2$, a promising candidate for a magnetic topological-crystalline axion insulator. Our investigation, focusing on the real-time evolution of topological states, unveiled a narrow surface magnetic gap (2$Δ_0$ $\simeq$ 8.2 meV)) emerging at the antiferromagnetic transition temperature ($T_N$ $\approx$ 16 K). Below $T_N$, two extremely low-energy collective modes, $ω_1$ and $ω_2$, with frequencies of $\sim$9.9 and 21.6 GHz at $T$ = 4 K, respectively, were observed, exhibiting strong temperature dependence. $ω_1$ correlates with an acoustic phonon, while $ω_2$ is associated with a magnon. The results suggest that EuIn$_2$As$_2$ has the potential to manifest a magnetic topological-crystalline axion insulator, presenting a small magnetic energy gap on the (001) surface. The findings further our understanding of the interplay between magnetism and topology in this material, showcasing its potential for applications in quantum information processing and spintronics.

Relocalization of Uranium 5f Electrons in Antiferromagnetic Heavy Fermion Superconductor UPd$_2$Al$_3$: Insights from Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

We investigate the antiferromagnetic heavy fermion superconductor UPd$_2$Al$_3$, employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to unravel the complex electronic structure of its U 5f electrons. We observe unexpected characteristics that challenge the conventional temperature-dependent behavior of heavy fermion systems, revealing unexpected characteristics. At temperatures above the anticipated coherence temperature (T$^*$), we observe itinerant U 5f electrons at temperatures higher than previously postulated. Additionally, a previously unidentified dispersionless band emerges around 600 meV below the Fermi energy, potentially linked to spin-orbit splitting within the U 5f states. Hybridization between the 5f electrons and conduction band was observed with an energy dispersion of 10 meV at low temperatures, suggesting that U 5f electrons near and at the Fermi surface have an itinerant nature. Temperature-dependent 5d-5f resonance spectra reveal that the 5f electron spectrum weight increases with lowering temperature and begins to decrease at temperatures significantly higher than the Neel temperature (T$_N$). We further show that the competition between the Kondo effect and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions may be responsible for the relocalization of 5f electrons, making relocalization a precursor to the establishment of magnetic order at lower temperatures. Our experiments also provide evidence that 5f electrons with the same orbital are involved in both the Kondo effect and RKKY interactions, suggesting that the two coexist at lower temperatures.

Exploring Fermi Surface Nesting and the Nature of Heavy Quasiparticles in the Spin-Triplet Superconductor Candidate CeRh$_2$As$_2$

In this study, we investigate the electronic structure of a spin-triplet superconductor candidate CeRh$_2$As$_2$ using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Notably, Fermi surface nesting hints at connections to magnetic excitation or quadrupole density wave phenomena, elucidating the superconducting mechanisms. Measured band structures reveal primarily localized 4f electrons, with minor itinerant contributions. Additionally, a transition from localized to itinerant behavior and significant c-f hybridization anisotropy underscore the role of f-electrons in shaping electronic properties. These findings deepen our understanding of CeRh$_2$As$_2$'s unconventional superconductivity and magnetism. Further exploration promises advances in superconductivity research.

Experimental observation of the significant difference between surface and bulk Kondo processes in Kondo lattice YbCu$_2$Si$_2$

Synchrotron-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy was employed to investigate the temperature evolution of the Yb 4f spectral for surface and bulk in the Kondo lattice YbCu$_2$Si$_2$.Our study quantitatively distinguishes between the surface and bulk hybridization processes, revealing that the onset temperatures for both surface and bulk hybridization processes are significantly higher than the Kondo temperature. Additionally, we found that the effective surface Kondo temperature is much lower than that of the bulk. These findings offer valuable insights into the understanding of heavy fermion physics.

Coupling of optical phonons with Kondo effect and magnetic orders in antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice CeAuSb$_2$

Ultrafast optical spectroscopy was used to investigate the ultrafast quasiparticle dynamics of antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice CeAuSb$_2$ as a function of temperature and fluence. Our results reveal (i) the opening of a narrow hybridization gap ($Δ$ $\sim$ 4.5 meV) near the Fermi level below the coherence temperature $T^*$ $\approx$ 100 K, (ii) the coupling of coherent phonon modes with Kondo effect and magnetic orders, leading to the frequencies anomaly at the characteristic temperatures, and (iii) a possible photoinduced nonthermal phase transition. Our observations thus shed light on the hybridization dynamics and magnetic orders in heavy fermion systems.

The Hidden Nematic Fluctuations in the Triclinic (Ca0.85La0.15)10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 Superconductor Revealed by Ultrafast Optical Spectroscopy

We reported the quasiparticle relaxation dynamics of an optimally doped triclinic iron-based superconductor (Ca$_{0.85}$La$_{0.15}$)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$)(Fe$_2$As$_2$)$_5$ with bulk $T_c$ = 30 K using polarized ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Our results reveal anisotropic transient reflectivity induced by nematic fluctuations develops below $T_{nem}$ $\approx$ 120 K and persists in the superconducting states. Measurements under high pump fluence reveal three distinct, coherent phonon modes at frequencies of 1.6, 3.5, and 4.7 THz, corresponding to $A_{1g}(1)$, $E_g$, and $A_{1g}(2)$ modes, respectively. The high-frequency $A_{1g}(2)$ mode corresponds to the $c$-axis polarized vibrations of FeAs planes with a nominal electron-phonon coupling constant $λ_{A_{1g}(2)}$ $\approx$ 0.139 $\pm$ 0.02. Our findings suggest that the superconductivity and nematic state are compatible but competitive at low temperatures, and the $A_{1g}$ phonons play an important role in the formation of Cooper pairs in (Ca$_{0.85}$La$_{0.15}$)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$)(Fe$_2$As$_2$)$_5$.

Itinerant to relocalized transition of f electrons in the Kondo insulator CeRu4Sn6

The three-dimensional electronic structure and the nature of Ce 4f electrons of the Kondo insulator CeRu4Sn6 are investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, utilizing tunable photon energies. Our results reveal (i) the three-dimensional k-space nature of the Fermi surface, (ii) the localized-to-itinerant transition of f electrons occurs at a much high temperature than the hybridization gap opening temperature, and (iii) the "relocalization" of itinerant f electrons below 25 K, which could be the precursor to the establishment of magnetic order.

Nesting-driven antiferromagnetic order in Kondo lattice CePd5Al2

We investigated the electronic structure of the antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice CePd5Al2 using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The experimentally determined band structure of the conduction electrons is predominated by the Pd 4d character. It contains multiple hole and electron Fermi pockets, in good agreement with density functional theory calculations. The Fermi surface is folded over Q0 = (0, 0, 1), manifested by Fermi surface reconstruction and band folding. Our results suggest that Fermi surface nesting drives the formation of antiferromagnetic order in CePd5Al2.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the charge density wave order in layered semiconductor EuTe4

Layered tellurides have been extensively studied as a platform for investigating the Fermi surface (FS) nesting-driven charge density wave (CDW) states. EuTe4, one of quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) binary rare-earth tetratellurides CDW compounds, with unconventional hysteretic transition, is currently receiving much attention. Here, the CDW modulation vector, momentum and temperature dependence of CDW gaps in EuTe4 are investigated using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our results reveal that (i) a FS nesting vector q ~ 0.67 b* drives the formation of CDW state, (ii) a large anisotropic CDW gap is fully open in the whole FS, and maintains a considerable size even at 300 K, leading to appearance of semiconductor properties, (iii) an abnormal non-monotonic increase of CDW gap in magnitude as a function of temperature, (iv) an extra, larger gap opens at a higher binding energy due to the interaction between the different orbits of the main bands.

Ultrafast Optical Spectroscopy Evidence of Pseudogap and Electron-Phonon Coupling in an Iron-Based Superconductor KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$

We use ultrafast optical spectroscopy to study the nonequilibrium quasiparticle relaxation dynamics of the iron-based superconductor KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ with $T_c=33.5$ K. Our results reveal a possible pseudogap ($Δ_{PG}$ = 2.4 $\pm$ 0.1 meV) below $T^*\approx 50$ K but prior to the opening of a superconducting gap ($Δ_{SC}$(0) $\approx$ 4.3 $\pm$ 0.1 meV). Measurements under high pump fluence real two distinct, coherent phonon oscillations with 1.95 and 5.51 THz frequencies, respectively. The high-frequency $A_{1g}$(2) mode corresponds to the $c-$axis polarized vibrations of FeAs planes with a nominal electron-phonon coupling constant $λ_{A_{1g}(2)}$ = 0.194 $\pm$ 0.02. Our findings suggest that the pseudogap is likely a precursor of superconductivity, and the electron-phonon coupling may play an essential role in the superconducting pairing in KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$.

Dirac semimetal PdTe2 temperature-dependent quasiparticle dynamics and electron-phonon coupling

Dirac semimetal PdTe2 single-crystal temperature-dependent ultrafast carrier and phonon dynamics were studied using ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Two distinct carrier and coherent phonons relaxation processes were identified in the 5 K - 300 K range. Quantitative analysis revealed a fast relaxation process (τ_f) occurring on a subpicosecond time scale which originated from electron-phonon thermalization. This was followed by a slower relaxation process (τ_s) with a time scale of ~ 7-9.5 ps which originated from phonon-assisted electron-hole recombination. Two significant vibrational modes resolved at all measured temperatures and corresponded to Te atoms in-plane (E_g), and out-of-plane (A_1g), motion. As temperature increased both phonon modes softened markedly. A_1g mode frequency monotonically decreased as temperature increased. Its damping rate remained virtually unchanged. As expected, E_g decreased uniformly as temperatures rose. At temperatures above 80 K, there was insignificant change. Test results suggested that pure dephasing played an important role in the relaxation processes. PdTe2 phonon is thought responsible for its superconductive properties. Examining phonons behavior should improve the understanding of its complex superconductivity.

4/-hybridization strength in CemMnIn3m+2n heavy-fermion compounds studied by Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

We systemically investigate the nature of Ce 4f electrons in structurally layered heavy-fermion compounds CcmMnIn3m+2n (with M =Co, Rh, Ir, and Pt, m=l, 2, n=0 - 2), at low temperature using on-resonance angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Three heavy quasiparticle bands f^0, f^1_7/2 and f^1_5/2 are observed in all compounds, but their intensities and energy locations vary greatly with materials. The strong f^0 states imply that the localized electron behavior dominates the Ce 4f states. The Ce 4f electrons are partially hybridized with the conduction electrons, making them have the dual nature of localization and itinerant. Our quantitative comparison reveals that the f^1_5/2 / f^0 intensity ratio is more suitable to reflect the 4f-state hybridization strength.

Temperature evolution of quasiparticle dispersion dynamics in semimetallic 1T-TiTe2 via high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy were used to study semimetallic 1T - TiTe2 quasiparticle dispersion and dynamics. A kink and a flat band, having the same energy scale and temperature-dependent behaviors along the G-M direction, were detected. Both manifested at low temperatures but blurred as temperature increased. The kink was formed by an electron-phonon coupling. And the localized flat band might be closely related to an electron-phonon coupling. Ultrafast optical spectroscopy identified multiple distinct time scales in the 10-300 K range. Quantitative analysis of the fastest decay process evidenced a significant lifetime temperature dependence at high temperatures, while this starts to change slowly below ~ 100 K where an anomalous Hall coefficient occurred. At low temperature, a coherent A1g phonon mode with a frequency of ~ 4.36 THz was extracted. Frequency temperature dependence suggests that phonon hardening occurs as temperature falls and anharmonic effects can explain it. Frequency fluence dependence indicates that the phonons soften as fluence increases.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of crystal electric field in heavy fermion compound CePt2In7

The three-dimensional electronic structure and Ce 4f electrons of the heavy fermion superconductor CePt2In7 is investigated. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using variable photon energy establishes the existence of quasi-two and three dimensional Fermi surface topologies. Temperature-dependent 4d-4f on-resonance photoemission spectroscopies reveal that heavy quasiparticle bands begin to form at a temperature well above the characteristic (coherence) temperature T*. T* emergence may be closely related to crystal electric field splitting, particularly the low-lying heavy band formed by crystal electric field splitting.

Ba2NiOsO6: A Dirac-Mott insulator with ferromagnetism near 100 K

The ferromagnetic semiconductor Ba2NiOsO6 (Tmag ~100 K) was synthesized at 6 GPa and 1500 °C. It crystallizes into a double perovskite structure [Fm-3m; a = 8.0428(1) Å], where the Ni2+ and Os6+ ions are perfectly ordered at the perovskite B-site. We show that the spin-orbit coupling of Os6+ plays an essential role in opening the charge gap. The magnetic state was investigated by density functional theory calculations and powder neutron diffraction. The latter revealed a collinear ferromagnetic order in a >21 kOe magnetic field at 5 K. The ferromagnetic gapped state is fundamentally different from that of known dilute magnetic semiconductors such as (Ga,Mn)As and (Cd,Mn)Te (Tmag < 180 K), the spin-gapless semiconductor Mn2CoAl (Tmag ~720 K), and the ferromagnetic insulators EuO (Tmag ~70 K) and Bi3Cr3O11 (Tmag ~220 K). It is also qualitatively different from known ferrimagnetic insulator/semiconductors, which are characterized by an antiparallel spin arrangement. Our finding of the ferromagnetic semiconductivity of Ba2NiOsO6 should increase interest in the platinum group oxides, because this new class of materials should be useful in the development of spintronic, quantum magnetic, and related devices.
