Legendre Analysis of Hadronic Reactions

Expansions over Legendre functions are suggested as a model-independent way of compact presentation of modern precise and high-statistics data for two-hadron reactions. Some properties of the expansions are described.

Measurement of pi^0 photoproduction on the proton at MAMI C

Differential cross sections for the gamma p -> pi^0 p reaction have been measured with the A2 tagged-photon facilities at the Mainz Microtron, MAMI C, up to the center-of-mass energy W=1.9 GeV. The new results, obtained with a fine energy and angular binning, increase the existing quantity of pi^0 photoproduction data by ~47%. Owing to the unprecedented statistical accuracy and the full angular coverage, the results are sensitive to high partial-wave amplitudes. This is demonstrated by the decomposition of the differential cross sections in terms of Legendre polynomials and by further comparison to model predictions. A new solution of the SAID partial-wave analysis obtained after adding the new data into the fit is presented.

Uncertainty relation for quantum gravity

Discussion of physical realization of coordinates demonstrates that the quantum theory of gravity (still absent) should be non-local and, probably, non-commutative as well.

Unexpected Mesons X, Y, Z, ... (tetraquarks? hadron molecules? ...)

This talk briefly discusses the set of meson resonances discovered in the latest decade. They are frequently treated in the literature as tetraquarks or hadron molecules. Our consideration (using the energy-time uncertainty relation) suggests, however, that the most reasonable description for each of them may be a two- (or more-) component Fock column, with one line being a conventional quark-antiquark pair, and the other line(s) corresponding to a charmed (or beauty) meson-antimeson pair near its threshold. Detailed investigation of decay properties might allow to reveal presence of several Fock components and separate their contributions.

Angular Functions with Complex Angular Momenta

In the study of the amplitudes for many-particle processes, and also for processes involving particles with spin, the use is made of matrix elements of the rotation group d^j_{μν}(z). In this paper the generalization of the functions d^j_{μν}(z) to arbitrary arguments and indices is studied. At the same time the functions of the second kind, analogous to Legendre functions of the second kind, are investigated. The results obtained play an important part in the introduction of complex angular momenta in many-particle processes. [Added in 2013: The generalized Legendre functions considered here may be applied as well to many other problems.]

Froissart Bounds for Amplitudes and Cross Sections at High Energies

High-energy behavior of total cross sections is discussed in experiment and theory. Origin and meaning of the Froissart bounds are described and explained. Violation of the familiar log-squared bound appears to not violate unitarity (contrary to the common opinion), but correspond to rapid high-energy increase of the amplitude in nonphysical regions.

Properties of the Lambda(1520) Resonance from High-Precision Electroproduction Data

High-resolution spectrometer measurements of the reaction H(e,e'K+)X at small Q2 are used to extract the mass and width of the Lambda(1520). We investigate the influence of various assumptions used in the extraction. The width appears to be more sensitive to the assumptions than the mass. To reach a width uncertainty about 1 MeV or better, one needs to know the structure of the non-resonant background. Based on the new Jefferson Lab Hall A data, our final values for the Breit-Wigner parameters are M = 1520.4 +- 0.6 (stat) +- 1.5 (syst) MeV, Gamma = 18.6 +- 1.9 (stat) +- 1 (syst) MeV. For the first time, we also estimate the pole position for this resonance and find that both the pole mass and width seem to be smaller than the Breit-Wigner values.

Properties of the Resonance Lambda(1520) as seen in the Forward Electroproduction at JLab Hall A

High-resolution spectrometer measurements of the reaction H(e,e' K+)X at small Q2 are used to extract the mass and width of the Lambda(1520). We investigate dependence of the resonance parameters on different parametrizations of the background and the resonance peak itself. Our final values for the Breit-Wigner parameters are M=1520.4+-0.6(stat)+-1.5(syst) MeV and Gamma=18.6+-1.9(stat)+-1(syst) MeV. The width appears to be more sensitive to the assumptions than the mass. We also estimate, for the first time, the pole position for this resonance and find that both the pole mass and width seem to be smaller than their Breit-Wigner values.

Study of the gp-->etap reaction with the Crystal Ball detector at the Mainz Microtron(MAMI-C)

The gp-->etap reaction has been measured with the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers in the energy range from the production threshold of 707 MeV to 1.4 GeV (1.49 =< W >= 1.87 GeV). Bremsstrahlung photons produced by the 1.5-GeV electron beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI-C and momentum analyzed by the Glasgow Tagging Spectrometer were used for the eta-meson production. Our accumulation of 3.8 x 10^6 gp-->etap-->3pi0p-->6gp events allows a detailed study of the reaction dynamics. The gp-->etap differential cross sections were determined for 120 energy bins and the full range of the production angles. Our data show a dip near W = 1680 MeV in the total cross section caused by a substantial dip in eta production at forward angles. The data are compared to predictions of previous SAID and MAID partial-wave analyses and to thelatest SAID and MAID fits that have included our data.

A Search for Sigma^0_5, N^0_5 and Theta^++ Pentaquark States

A high-resolution (sigma_instr. = 1.5 MeV) search for narrow states (Gamma < 10 MeV) with masses of M_x approx 1500-1850 MeV in ep -> e'K^+ X, e'K^- X and e' pi^+ X electroproduction at small angles and low Q^2 was performed. These states would be candidate partner states of the reported Theta^+(1540) pentaquark. No statistically significant signal was observed in any of the channels at 90% C.L. Upper limits on forward production were determined to be between 0.7% and 4.2% of the Lambda(1520) production cross section, depending on the channel and the assumed mass and width of the state.

The problem of exotic states: view from complex angular momenta

Having in mind present uncertainty of the experimental situation in respect to exotic hadrons, it is important to discuss any possible theoretical arguments, pro and contra. Up to now, there are no theoretical ideas which could forbid existence of the exotic states. Theoretical proofs for their existence are also absent. However, there are some indirect arguments for the latter case. It will be shown here, by using the complex angular momenta approach, that the standard assumptions of analyticity and unitarity for hadronic amplitudes lead to a non-trivial conclusion: the S-matrix has infinitely many poles in the energy plane (accounting for all its Riemann sheets). This is true for any arbitrary quantum numbers of the poles, exotic or non-exotic. Whether some of the poles may provide physical (stable or resonance) states, should be determined by some more detailed dynamics.

Complex Angular Momenta and the Problem of Exotic States

After some brief personal recollections about V.N.Gribov, I demonstrate that his results and ideas on complex angular momenta may be applied in unfamiliar directions. As an example, it is shown, that any strong interaction amplitude, satisfying dispersion relation (in momentum transfer), has infinite number of energy-plane poles, both for exotic and non-exotic quantum numbers. This result ensures the necessary condition for existence of exotic hadrons. However, without more detailed knowledge of dynamics one cannot secure sufficient conditions for the exotics existence.

Search for Higher Flavor Multiplets in Partial Wave Analyses

The possible existence of higher multi-quark flavor multiplets of baryons is investigated. We argue that the S-matrix should have poles with any quantum numbers, including those which are exotic. This argument provides a novel justification for the existence of hadrons with arbitrary exotic structure. Though it does not constitute a proof, there are still no theoretical arguments against exotics. We then consider KN and piN scattering. Conventional and modified partial-wave analyses provide several sets of candidates for correlated pairs (Theta1, Delta), each of which could label a related 27-plet. Properties of the pairs (masses, mass orderings, spin-parity quantum numbers) do not quite correspond to the current theoretical expectations. Decay widths of the candidates are either wider or narrower than expected. Possible reasons for such disagreements are briefly discussed.

Present status of the nonstrange and other flavor partners of the exotic Theta+ baryon

Given the existing empirical information about the exotic Theta+ baryon, we analyze possible properties of its SU(3)F-partners, paying special attention to the nonstrange member of the antidecuplet N*. The modified piN partial-wave analysis presents two candidate masses, 1680 MeV and 1730 MeV. In both cases, the N* should be rather narrow and highly inelastic. Our results suggest several directions for experimental studies that may clarify properties of the antidecuplet baryons, and structure of their mixing with other baryons. Recent experimental evidence from the GRAAL and STAR Collaborations could be interpreted as observations of a candidate for the Theta+ nonstrange partner.

Resonances, and mechanisms of Theta-production

After explaining necessity of exotic hadrons, we discuss mechanisms which could determine production of the exotic Theta-baryon. A possible important role of resonances (producing the Theta in real or virtual decays) is emphasized for various processes. Several experimental directions for studies of such resonances, and the Theta itself, are suggested. We briefly discuss also recent negative results on the Theta-baryon.

Decay properties of new D-mesons

We consider radiative and pionic decays of the new D_s-mesons in the framework of a phenomenologically motivated approach. Present data on ratios of the two kinds of decays can be described without explicit using a 4-quark component. Most probably, the isospin violation in decays of different D_s-mesons is not universal, and the binding potential should be different from Coulombic. New precise measurements may provide further clarification for the nature of the D_s excited states.
