The Appearance of a Radio-Pulsar Magnetosphere from a Vacuum with a Strong Magnetic Field. Motion of Charged Particles

The motion of electrons and positrons in the vacuum magnetosphere of a neutron star with a surface magnetic field of B~10^12 G is considered. Particles created in the magnetosphere or falling into it from outside are virtually instantaneously accelerated to Lorentz factors gamma~10^8. After crossing the force-free surface, where the projection of the electric field onto the magnetic field vanishes, a particle begins to undergo ultra-relativistic oscillations. The particle experiences a regular drift along the force-free surface simultaneous with this oscillatory motion.

The Appearance of a Radio-Pulsar Magnetosphere from a Vacuum with a Strong Magnetic Field. Accumulation of Particles

The accumulation of electrons and positrons in the vacuum magnetosphere of a neutron star with a surface magnetic field of B~10^12 G is considered. It is shown that particles created in the magnetosphere or falling into the magnetosphere from outside undergo ultra-relativistic oscillations with a frequency of 10-100 MHz. These oscillations decay due to energy losses to curvature radiation and bremsstrahlung, with their frequencies reaching 1-10 GHz. Simultaneously, the particles undergo regular motion along the force-free surface along closed trajectories. This leads to the gradual accumulation of particles at the force-free surface and the formation of a fully charge-separated plasma layer with a density of the order of the Goldreich-Julian density. The presence of a constant source of electron-positron pairs in the magnetosphere due to the absorption of energetic cosmic gamma-rays leads to the growth of this layer, bringing about a rapid filling of the pulsar magnetosphere with electron-positron plasma if the pair-creation multiplication coefficient is sufficiently high.

The Filling of Neutron Star Magnetospheres with Plasma: Dynamics of the Motion of Electrons and Positrons

We consider the motion of charged particles in the vacuum magnetospheres of rotating neutron stars with a strong surface magnetic field, B>10^(12) G. The electrons and positrons falling into the magnetosphere or produced in it are shown to be captured by the force-free surface EB=0. Using the Dirac-Lorentz equation, we investigate the dynamics of particle capture and subsequent motion near the force-free surface. The particle energy far from the force-free surface has been found to be determined by the balance between the power of the forces of an accelerating electric field and the intensity of curvature radiation. When captured, the particles perform adiabatic oscillations along the magnetic field lines and simultaneously move along the force-free surface. We have found the oscillation parameters and trajectories of the captured particles. We have calculated the characteristic capture times and energy losses of the particles through the emission of both bremsstrahlung and curvature photons by them. The capture of particles is shown to lead to a monotonic increase in the thickness of the layer of charged plasma accumulating near the force-free surface. The time it takes for a vacuum magnetosphere to be filled with plasma has been estimated.

Utilization of photon orbital angular momentum in the low-frequency radio domain

We show numerically that vector antenna arrays can generate radio beams which exhibit spin and orbital angular momentum characteristics similar to those of helical Laguerre-Gauss laser beams in paraxial optics. For low frequencies (< 1 GHz), digital techniques can be used to coherently measure the instantaneous, local field vectors and to manipulate them in software. This opens up for new types of experiments that go beyond those currently possible to perform in optics, for information-rich radio physics applications such as radio astronomy, and for novel wireless communication concepts.

Electromagnetic Mechanism for the Origin of Knots in Parsec Scale Jets

We consider the propagation and stability of the helical electromagnetic perturbations in a relativistic force-free Pointing flux dominated jet (magnetic helix). Perturbations are found to dissipate energy in the vicinity of the resonant surfaces inside the jet, where the resonance of the perturbation with the Alfven waves occurs. The energy of the perturbations is converted into the energy of accelerated particles, which emit synchrotron radiation. The intensity and polarization of this radiation is modulated with the perturbation. Perturbations with vanishing group velocity are the most important and could be associated with the bright knots in parsec scale jets.

Relativistic parsec-scale jets: II. Synchrotron emission

We calculate the optically thin synchrotron emission of fast electrons and positrons in a spiral stationary magnetic field and a radial electric field of a rotating relativistic strongly magnetized force-free jet consisting of electron-positron pair plasma. The magnetic field has a helical structure with a uniform axial component and a toroidal component that is maximal inside the jet and decreasing to zero towards the boundary of the jet. Doppler boosting and swing of the polarization angle of synchrotron emission due to the relativistic motion of the emitting volume are calculated. The distribution of the plasma velocity in the jet is consistent with the electromagnetic field structure. Two spatial distributions of fast particles are considered: uniform, and concentrated in the vicinity of the Alfven resonance surface. The latter distribution corresponds to the regular acceleration by an electromagnetic wave in the vicinity of its Alfven resonance surface inside the jet. The polarization properties of the radiation have been obtained and compared with the existing VLBI polarization measurements of parsec-scale jets in BL Lac sources and quasars. Our results give a natural explanation of the observed bimodality in the alignment between the electric field vector of the polarized radiation and the projection of the jet axis on the plane of the sky. We interpret the motion of bright knots as a phase velocity of standing spiral eigenmodes of electromagnetic perturbations in a cylindrical jet. The degree of polarization and the velocity of the observed proper motion of bright knots depend upon the angular rotational velocity of the jet. The observed polarizations and velocities of knots indicate that the magnetic field lines are bent in the direction opposite to the direction of the jet rotation.

Relativistic parsec-scale jets: I. Particle acceleration

We develop a theory of particle acceleration inside relativistic rotating electron-positron force-free jets with spiral magnetic fields. We considered perturbation of the stationary magnetic field structure and found that acceleration takes place in the regions where the Alfven resonant condition with the eigenmodes in the jet is fulfilled, i.e. where the local Alfven speed is equal to the phase speed of an eigenmode. The acceleration mechanism is regular acceleration by the electric field of the electromagnetic wave, which is the eigenmode of the force-free cylindrical jet: particles drift out of the region of the large wave amplitude near the Alfven resonant surface and gain energy. Acceleration in the strong electric field near the Alfven resonance and synchrotron losses combine to form a power-law energy spectrum of ultra-relativistic electrons and positrons with index between 2 and 3 depending upon the initial energy of the injected particles. The power law distribution ranges from 10 MeV to 1000 MeV.

The Magnetospheric Flare on Compact Magnetized Object (Neutron Star or White Dwarf) - Model for Cosmological Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB)

The SN explosion in the closed binary can give the magnetospheric flare possessing the properties of GRB. The SN shock, flowing around the magnetosphere of a magnetized neutron star or a white dwarf, produces a narrow magnetic tail 10^9 cm long, 10^8 cm wide and a magnetic field of 10^6 Gauss. Fast particles (Lorentz factor of 10^4), generated in the tail by reconnection processes, radaite gamma rays of the 100 KeV - 1 MeV energies. The duration of radiation T<1 sec corresponds to a short GRB. Apart, the powerful shock can tear and accelerate part of the tail. That is the relativistic, strongly magnetized jet, producing gamma radiation and also X-rays and optic afterglow. That is long (T> 10 sec) GRB. The duration of the afterglow is inversly proportional to the photon energy and is several months for optic.

Resonance accretion on the magnetized rotating neutron star

It is suggested that the accretion disk excites the eigen modes of Alfven oscillations of the magnetic field tubes the ends of which are frozen to the neutron star surface. The resonance takes place when the eigen Alfven frequency coincides with the difference of the Keplerian disk rotation frequency and the frequency of rotation of a neutron star. This model explains the two narrow lines of QPO oscillations in kHz band and permits to calculate the masses and radii of the neutron stars in X-ray binaries.

Synchrotron emission from relativistic parsec-scale jets

We developed theory of particle acceleration inside the relativistic rotating electron-positron force-free jet with spiral magnetic field. We considered perturbation of stationary magnetic field structure and found that acceleration takes place in the regions where the Alfven resonant condition with the eigenmodes in the jet is fulfilled. Acceleration process and synchrotron losses combined together form power law energy spectrum of ultrarelativistic electrons and positrons with index between 2 and 3 depending upon initial energy of injected particles. Synchrotron emission of these electrons and positrons in spiral magnetic field of rotating force-free jet has been calculated. Polarization properties of the radiation has been obtained and compared with existing VLBI polarization measurements of parsec-scale jets in BL Lac sources and quasars. Our results give explanation of observed bimodality in alignment between electric field vector and jet axis. Degree of polarization and velocity of observed proper motion of bright knots depend upon angular rotational velocity of the jet. Thus, comparing them to each other, we can estimate angular rotational velocity in jets. We obtain that the fact, that generally in BL Lac objects electric field vector is oriented parallel to the jet axis while in quasars perpendicular to the jet axis, may be due to intrinsically larger angular rotational velocity and large winding of magnetic field in BL Lac jets than in quasar jets.

Stability of a relativistic rotating electron-positron jet: nonaxisymmetric perturbations

We investigate the linear stability of a hydrodynamic relativistic flow of magnetized plasma in the force--free approximation. We considered the case of light cylindrical jet in cold and dense environment, so the jet boundary remains at rest. Continuous and discrete spectra of frequencies are investigated analytically. An infinite sequence of eigenfrequencies is found near the edge of Alfvén continuum. Numerical calculations showed that modes are stable and have attenuation increment $γ$ small. The dispersion curves $ω=ω(k_\parallel )$ have a minimum for $k_{{\parallel}_0}\simeq 1/R$ ($R$ is the jet radius ). This results in accumulation of perturbations inside the jet with wavelength of the order of the jet radius. The wave crests of the perturbation pattern formed in such a way move along the jet with the velocity exceeding light speed. If one has relativistic electrons emitting synchrotron radiation inside the jet, than this pattern will be visible. This provide us with the new type of superluminal source. If the jet is oriented close to the line of sight, than the observer will see knots moving backward to the core.
