Spectral equivalence of Gaussian random functions: operator approach

We introduce a new approach to the spectral equivalence of Gaussian processes and fields, based on the methods of operator theory in Hilbert space. Besides several new results including identities in law of quadratic norms for integrated and multiply integrated Gaussian random functions we give an application to goodness-of-fit testing.

Bahadur efficiency of EDF based normality tests when parameters are estimated

In this paper some well-known tests based on empirical distribution functions (EDF) with estimated parameters for testing composite normality hypothesis are revisited, and some new results on asymptotic properties are provided. In particular, the approximate Bahadur slopes are obtained -- in the case of close alternatives -- for the EDF-based tests as well as the likelihood ratio test. The local approximate efficiencies are calculated for several close alternatives. The obtained results could serve as a benchmark for evaluation of the quality of recent and future normality tests.

Generalized Limit Theorems For $U$-max Statistics

U-max statistics were introduced by Lao and Mayer in 2008. Instead of averaging the kernel over all possible subsets of the original sample, they considered the maximum of the kernel. Such statistics are natural in stochastic geometry. Examples are the maximal perimeters and areas of polygons and polyhedra formed by random points on a circle, ellipse, etc. The main method to study limit theorems for U-max statistics is a Poisson approximation. In this paper we consider a general class of kernels defined on a circle, and we prove a universal limit theorem with the Weibull distribution as a limit. Its parameters depend on the degree of the kernel, the structure of its points of maximum and the Hessians of the kernel at these points. Almost all limit theorems known so far may be obtained as simple special cases of our general theorem. We also consider several new examples. Moreover, we consider not only the uniform distribution of points but also almost arbitrary distribution on a circle satisfying mild additional conditions.

New characterization based symmetry tests

Two new symmetry tests, of integral and Kolmogorov type, based on the characterization by squares of linear statistics are proposed. The test statistics are related to the family of degenerate U-statistics. Their asymptotic properties are explored. The maximal eigenvalue, needed for the derivation of their logarithmic tail behavior, was calculated or approximated using techniques from the theory of linear operators and the perturbation theory. The quality of the tests is assessed using the approximate Bahadur efficiency as well as the simulated powers. The tests are shown to be comparable with some recent and classical tests of symmetry.

Tests based on characterizations, and their efficiencies: a survey

A survey of goodness-of-fit and symmetry tests based on the characterization properties of distributions is presented. This approach became popular in recent years. In most cases the test statistics are functionals of $U$-empirical processes. The limiting distributions and large deviations of new statistics under the null hypothesis are described. Their local Bahadur efficiency for various parametric alternatives is calculated and compared with each other as well as with diverse previously known tests. We also describe new directions of possible research in this domain.

Efficiency of Exponentiality Tests Based on a Special Property of Exponential Distribution

New goodness-of-fit tests for exponentiality based on a particular property of exponential law are constructed. Test statistics are functionals of U-empirical processes. The first of these statistics is of integral type, the second one is a Kolmogorov type statistic. We show that the kernels corresponding to our statistics are nondegenerate. The limiting distributions and large deviations of new statistics under the null hypothesis are described. Their local Bahadur efficiency for various parametric alternatives is calculated and is compared with simulated powers of new tests. Conditions of local optimality of new statistics in Bahadur sense are discussed and examples of "most favorable" alternatives are given. New tests are applied to reject the hypothesis of exponentiality for the length of reigns of Roman emperors which was intensively discussed in recent years.

Tests of exponentiality based on Arnold-Villasenor characterization, and their efficiencies

We propose two families of scale-free exponentiality tests based on the recent characterization of exponentiality by Arnold and Villasenor. The test statistics are based on suitable functionals of U-empirical distribution functions. The family of integral statistics can be reduced to V- or U-statistics with relatively simple non-degenerate kernels. They are asymptotically normal and have reasonably high local Bahadur efficiency under common alternatives. This efficiency is compared with simulated powers of new tests. On the other hand, the Kolmogorov type tests demonstrate very low local Bahadur efficiency and rather moderate power for common alternatives, and can hardly be recommended to practitioners. We also explore the conditions of local asymptotic optimality of new tests and describe for both families special "most favorable" alternatives for which the tests are fully efficient.

U-max-Statistics and Limit Theorems for Perimeters and Areas of Random Polygons

Recently W. Lao and M. Mayer [6], [7], [9] considered $U$-max - statistics, where instead of sum appears the maximum over the same set of indices. Such statistics often appear in stochastic geometry. The examples are given by the largest distance between random points in a ball, the maximal diameter of a random polygon, the largest scalar product within a sample of points, etc. Their limit distribution is related to the distribution of extreme values. Among the interesting results obtained in [6], [7], [9] are limit theorems for the maximal perimeter and the maximal area of random triangles inscribed in a circumference. In the present paper we generalize these theorems to convex $m$-polygons, $m \geq 3,$ with random vertices on the circumference. Next, a similar problem is solved for the minimal perimeter and the minimal area of circumscribed $m$-polygons which has not been previously considered in literature. Finally, we discuss the obtained results when $m \to \infty.$

Asymptotic Efficiency of Goodness-of-fit Tests for the Power Function Distribution Based on Puri--Rubin Characterization

We construct integral and supremum type goodness-of-fit tests for the family of power distribution functions. Test statistics are functionals of $U-$empirical processes and are based on the classical characterization of power function distribution family belonging to Puri and Rubin. We describe the logarithmic large deviation asymptotics of test statistics under null-hypothesis, and calculate their local Bahadur efficiency under common parametric alternatives. Conditions of local optimality of new statistics are given.
