Lp-asymptotic stability of 1D damped wave equations with localized and linear damping

In this paper, we study the $L^p$-asymptotic stability of the one-dimensional linear damped wave equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions in $[0,1]$, with $p\in (1,\infty)$. The damping term is assumed to be linear and localized to an arbitrary open sub-interval of $[0,1]$. We prove that the semi-group $(S_p(t))_{t\geq 0}$ associated with the previous equation is well-posed and exponentially stable. The proof relies on the multiplier method and depends on whether $p\geq 2$ or $1<p<2$.

Weak Input to state estimates for 2D damped wave equations with localized and non-linear damping

In this paper, we study input-to-state (ISS) issues for damped wave equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a bounded domain of dimension two. The damping term is assumed to be non-linear and localized to an open subset of the domain. In a first step, we handle the undisturbed case as an extension of a previous work, where stability results are given with a damping term active on the full domain. Then, we address the case with disturbances and provide input-to-state types of results.

Lyapunov-Stable Orientation Estimator for Humanoid Robots

In this paper, we present an observation scheme, with proven Lyapunov stability, for estimating a humanoid's floating base orientation. The idea is to use velocity aided attitude estimation, which requires to know the velocity of the system. This velocity can be obtained by taking into account the kinematic data provided by contact information with the environment and using the IMU and joint encoders. We demonstrate how this operation can be used in the case of a fixed or a moving contact, allowing it to be employed for locomotion. We show how to use this velocity estimation within a selected two-stage state tilt estimator: (i) the first which has a global and quick convergence (ii) and the second which has smooth and robust dynamics. We provide new specific proofs of almost global Lyapunov asymptotic stability and local exponential convergence for this observer. Finally, we assess its performance by employing a comparative simulation and by using it within a closed-loop stabilization scheme for HRP-5P and HRP-2KAI robots performing whole-body kinematic tasks and locomotion.

Effects of Roots of Maximal Multiplicity on the Stability of Some Classes of Delay Differential-Algebraic Systems: The Lossless Propagation Case

It has been observed in several recent works that, for some classes of linear time-delay systems, spectral values of maximal multiplicity are dominant, a property known as multiplicity-induced-dominancy (MID). This paper starts the investigation of whether MID holds for delay differential-algebraic systems by considering a single-delay system composed of two scalar equations. After motivating this problem and recalling some recent results for retarded delay differential equations, we prove that the MID property holds for the delay differential-algebraic system of interest and present some applications.

Worst Exponential Decay Rate for Degenerate Gradient flows subject to persistent excitation

In this paper we estimate the worst rate of exponential decay of degenerate gradient flows $\dot x = -S x$, issued from adaptive control theory. Under persistent excitation assumptions on the positive semi-definite matrix $S$, we provide upper bounds for this rate of decay consistent with previously known lower bounds and analogous stability results for more general classes of persistently excited signals. The strategy of proof consists in relating the worst decay rate to optimal control questions and studying in details their solutions. As a byproduct of our analysis, we also obtain estimates for the worst $L_2$-gain of the time-varying linear control systems $\dot x=-cc^\top x+u$, where the signal $c$ is persistently excited, thus solving an open problem posed by A. Rantzer in 1999.

Velocity-aided IMU-based Attitude Estimation

This paper addresses the problem of estimating the attitude of a rigid body, which is subject to high accelerations and equipped with inertial measurement unit (IMU) and sensors providing the body velocity (expressed in the reference frame attached to the body). That issue can be treated differently depending on the level of confidence in the measurements of the magnetometer of the IMU, particularly with regard to the observation of the inclination component with respect to the vertical direction, rendering possible to describe the interaction with gravity. Two cases are then studied: either (i) the magnetometer is absent and only the inclination can be estimated, (ii) the magnetometer is present, giving redundancy and full attitude observability. In the latter case, the presented observer allows to tune how much the inclination estimation is influenced by the magnetometer. All state estimators are proposed with proof of almost global asymptotic stability and local exponential convergence. Finally, these estimators are compared with state-of-the-art solutions in clean and noisy simulations, allowing recommended solutions to be drawn for each case.

Controllability results for the rolling of $2$-dim. against $3$-dim. Riemannian Manifolds

In this article, we consider the rolling (or development) of two Riemannian connected manifolds $(M,g)$ and $(\hat{M},\hat{g})$ of dimensions $2$ and $3$ respectively, with the constraints of no-spinning and no-slipping. The present work is a continuation of \cite{MortadaKokkonenChitour}, which modelled the general setting of the rolling of two Riemannian connected manifolds with different dimensions as a driftless control affine system on a fibered space $Q$, with an emphasis on understanding the local structure of the rolling orbits, i.e., the reachable sets in $Q$. In this paper, the state space $Q$ has dimension eight and we show that the possible dimensions of non open rolling orbits belong to the set $\{2,5,6,7\}$. We describe the structures of orbits of dimension $2$, the possible local structures of rolling orbits of dimension $5$ and some of dimension $7$.

A Lyapunov Approach to Barrier-Function Based Time-Varying Gains Higher Order Sliding Mode Controllers

In this paper, we present Lyapunov-based {\color{black}time varying} controllers for {\color{black}fast} stabilization of a perturbed chain of integrators with bounded uncertainties. We refer to such controllers as {\color{black}time varying} higher order sliding mode controllers since they are designed for nonlinear Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) systems with bounded uncertainties such that the uncertainty bounds are unknown. %{\color{blue} OLD: Our main result states that, given any neighborhood $\varepsilon$ of the origin, we determine a controller insuring, for every uncertainty bounds, that every trajectory of the corresponding closed loop system enters $\varepsilon$ and eventually remains there. Furthermore, based on the homogeneity property, a new asymptotic accuracy, which depends on the size of $\varepsilon$, is presented.} We provide a time varying control feedback law insuring verifying the following: there exists a family $(D(t))_{t\geq 0}$ of time varying open sets decreasing to the origin as $t$ tends to infinity, such that, for any unknown uncertainty bounds and trajectory $z(\cdot)$ of the corresponding system, there exists a positive positve $t_z$ for which $z(t_z)\in D(t_z)$ and $z(t)\in D(t)$ for $t\geq t_z$. %enters convergence in finite time of all the trajectories to a time varying domain $D(t)$ shrinking to the origin and their maintenance there. Hence, since the function $η(t)$ tends to zero, this leads the asymptotic convergence of all the trajectories to zero. The effectiveness of these controllers is illustrated through simulations.

Fuller singularities for generic control-affine systems with an even number of controls

In this article we study how bad can be the singularities of a time-optimal trajectory of a generic control affine system. In the case where the control is scalar and belongs to a closed interval it was recently shown in [6] that singularities cannot be, generically, worse than finite order accumulations of Fuller points, with order of accumulation lower than a bound depending only on the dimension of the manifold where the system is set. We extend here such a result to the case where the control has an even number of scalar components and belongs to a closed ball.

Lyapunov characterization of uniform exponential stability for nonlinear infinite-dimensional systems

In this paper we deal with infinite-dimensional nonlinear forward complete dynamical systems which are subject to external disturbances. We first extend the well-known Datko lemma to the framework of the considered class of systems. Thanks to this generalization, we provide characterizations of the uniform (with respect to disturbances) local, semi-global, and global exponential stability, through the existence of coercive and non-coercive Lyapunov functionals. The importance of the obtained results is underlined through some applications concerning 1) exponential stability of nonlinear retarded systems with piecewise constant delays, 2) exponential stability preservation under sampling for semilinear control switching systems, and 3) the link between input-to-state stability and exponential stability of semilinear switching systems.

Switching systems with dwell time: computation of the maximal Lyapunov exponent

We study asymptotic stability of continuous-time systems with mode-dependent guaranteed dwell time. These systems are reformulated as special cases of a general class of mixed (discrete-continuous) linear switching systems on graphs, in which some modes correspond to discrete actions and some others correspond to continuous-time evolutions. Each discrete action has its own positive weight which accounts for its time-duration. We develop a theory of stability for the mixed systems; in particular, we prove the existence of an invariant Lyapunov norm for mixed systems on graphs and study its structure in various cases, including discrete-time systems for which discrete actions have inhomogeneous time durations. This allows us to adapt recent methods for the joint spectral radius computation (Gripenberg's algorithm and the Invariant Polytope Algorithm) to compute the Lyapunov exponent of mixed systems on graphs.

Barrier function-Based Variable Gain Super-Twisting Controller

In this paper, a variable gain super-twisting algorithm based on a barrier function is proposed for a class of first order disturbed systems with uncertain control coefficient and whose disturbances derivatives are bounded but they are unknown. The specific feature of this algorithm is that it can ensure the convergence of the output variable and maintain it in a predefined neighborhood of zero independent of the upper bound of the disturbances derivatives. Moreover, thanks to the structure of the barrier function, it forces the gain to decrease together with the output variable which yields the non-overestimation of the control gain.

Stabilization for a perturbed chain of integrators in prescribed time

In this paper, we consider issues relative to prescribed time stabilisation of a chain of integrators of arbitrary length, either pure (i.e., where there is no disturbance) or perturbed. In a first part, we revisit the proportional navigation feedback (PNF) approach and we show that it can be appropriately recasted within the framework of time-varying homogeneity. As a first consequence, we first recover all previously obtained results on PNF with simpler arguments. We then apply sliding mode inspired feedbacks to achieve prescribed stabilisation with uniformly bounded gains. However, all these feedbacks are robust to matched uncertainties only. In a second part, we provide a feedback law yet inspired by sliding mode which not only stabilises the pure chain of integrators in prescribed time but also exhibits some robustness in the presence of measurement noise and unmatched uncertainties.

L^p-asymptotic stability analysis of a 1D wave equation with a nonlinear damping

This paper is concerned with the asymptotic stability analysis of a one dimensional wave equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions subject to a nonlinear distributed damping with an L p functional framework, p $\in$ [2, $\infty$]. Some well-posedness results are provided together with exponential decay to zero of trajectories, with an estimation of the decay rate. The well-posedness results are proved by considering an appropriate functional of the energy in the desired functional spaces introduced by Haraux in [11]. Asymptotic behavior analysis is based on an attractivity result on a trajectory of an infinite-dimensional linear time-varying system with a special structure, which relies on the introduction of a suitable Lyapunov functional. Note that some of the results of this paper apply for a large class of nonmonotone dampings.

Stability analysis of a 1D wave equation with a nonmonotone distributed damping

This paper is concerned with the asymptotic stability analysis of a one dimensional wave equation subject to a nonmonotone distributed damping. A well-posedness result is provided together with a precise characterization of the asymptotic behavior of the trajectories of the system under consideration. The well-posedness is proved in the nonstandard L p functional spaces, with p $\in$ [2, $\infty$], and relies mostly on some results collected in Haraux (2009). The asymptotic behavior analysis is based on an attractivity result on a specific infinite-dimensional linear time-variant system.

Stability and Controllability results for a Timoshenko system

In this paper, we study the indirect boundary stability and exact controllability of a one-dimensional Timoshenko system. In the first part of the paper, we consider the Timoshenko system with only one boundary fractional damping. We first show that the system is strongly stable but not uniformly stable. Hence, we look for a polynomial decay rate for smooth initial data. Using frequency domain arguments combined with the multiplier method, we prove that the energy decay rate depends on coefficients appearing in the PDE and on the order of the fractional damping. Moreover, under the equal speed propagation condition, we obtain the optimal polynomial energy decay rate. In the second part of this paper, we study the indirect boundary exact controllability of the Timoshenko system with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions and boundary control. Using non-harmonic analysis, we first establish a weak observability inequality, which depends on the ratio of the waves propagation speeds. Next, using the HUM method, we prove that the system is exactly controllable in appropriate spaces and that the control time can be small.

Tilt estimator for 3D non-rigid pendulum based on a tri-axial accelerometer and gyrometer

The paper presents a new observer for tilt estimation of a 3-D non-rigid pendulum. The system can be seen as a multibody robot attached to the environment with a ball joint. There is no sensor for the joint position of the sensor. The estimation of tilt, i.e. roll and pitch angles, is mandatory for balance control for a humanoid robot and all tasks requiring verticality. Our method obtains tilt estimations using encoders on other joints and inertial measurements given by an IMU equipped with tri-axial accelerometer and gyrometer mounted in any body of the robot. The estimator takes profit from the kinematic coupling resulting from the pivot constraint and uses the entire signal of accelerometer including linear accelerations. Almost Global Asymptotic convergence of the estimation errors is proven together with local exponential stability. The performance of the proposed observer is illustrated by simulations.
