Unsupervised Domain Adaptation for RF-based Gesture Recognition

Human gesture recognition with Radio Frequency (RF) signals has attained acclaim due to the omnipresence, privacy protection, and broad coverage nature of RF signals. These gesture recognition systems rely on neural networks trained with a large number of labeled data. However, the recognition model trained with data under certain conditions would suffer from significant performance degradation when applied in practical deployment, which limits the application of gesture recognition systems. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised domain adaptation framework for RF-based gesture recognition aiming to enhance the performance of the recognition model in new conditions by making effective use of the unlabeled data from new conditions. We first propose pseudo-labeling and consistency regularization to utilize unlabeled data for model training and eliminate the feature discrepancies in different domains. Then we propose a confidence constraint loss to enhance the effectiveness of pseudo-labeling, and design two corresponding data augmentation methods based on the characteristic of the RF signals to strengthen the performance of the consistency regularization, which can make the framework more effective and robust. Furthermore, we propose a cross-match loss to integrate the pseudo-labeling and consistency regularization, which makes the whole framework simple yet effective. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed framework could achieve 4.35% and 2.25% accuracy improvement comparing with the state-of-the-art methods on public WiFi dataset and millimeter wave (mmWave) radar dataset, respectively.

ShapefileGPT: A Multi-Agent Large Language Model Framework for Automated Shapefile Processing

Vector data is one of the two core data structures in geographic information science (GIS), essential for accurately storing and representing geospatial information. Shapefile, the most widely used vector data format, has become the industry standard supported by all major geographic information systems. However, processing this data typically requires specialized GIS knowledge and skills, creating a barrier for researchers from other fields and impeding interdisciplinary research in spatial data analysis. Moreover, while large language models (LLMs) have made significant advancements in natural language processing and task automation, they still face challenges in handling the complex spatial and topological relationships inherent in GIS vector data. To address these challenges, we propose ShapefileGPT, an innovative framework powered by LLMs, specifically designed to automate Shapefile tasks. ShapefileGPT utilizes a multi-agent architecture, in which the planner agent is responsible for task decomposition and supervision, while the worker agent executes the tasks. We developed a specialized function library for handling Shapefiles and provided comprehensive API documentation, enabling the worker agent to operate Shapefiles efficiently through function calling. For evaluation, we developed a benchmark dataset based on authoritative textbooks, encompassing tasks in categories such as geometric operations and spatial queries. ShapefileGPT achieved a task success rate of 95.24%, outperforming the GPT series models. In comparison to traditional LLMs, ShapefileGPT effectively handles complex vector data analysis tasks, overcoming the limitations of traditional LLMs in spatial analysis. This breakthrough opens new pathways for advancing automation and intelligence in the GIS field, with significant potential in interdisciplinary data analysis and application contexts.

M3GIA: A Cognition Inspired Multilingual and Multimodal General Intelligence Ability Benchmark

As recent multi-modality large language models (MLLMs) have shown formidable proficiency on various complex tasks, there has been increasing attention on debating whether these models could eventually mirror human intelligence. However, existing benchmarks mainly focus on evaluating solely on task performance, such as the accuracy of identifying the attribute of an object. Combining well-developed cognitive science to understand the intelligence of MLLMs beyond superficial achievements remains largely unexplored. To this end, we introduce the first cognitive-driven multi-lingual and multi-modal benchmark to evaluate the general intelligence ability of MLLMs, dubbed M3GIA. Specifically, we identify five key cognitive factors based on the well-recognized Cattell-Horn-Carrol (CHC) model of intelligence and propose a novel evaluation metric. In addition, since most MLLMs are trained to perform in different languages, a natural question arises: is language a key factor influencing the cognitive ability of MLLMs? As such, we go beyond English to encompass other languages based on their popularity, including Chinese, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Korean, to construct our M3GIA. We make sure all the data relevant to the cultural backgrounds are collected from their native context to avoid English-centric bias. We collected a significant corpus of data from human participants, revealing that the most advanced MLLM reaches the lower boundary of human intelligence in English. Yet, there remains a pronounced disparity in the other five languages assessed. We also reveals an interesting winner takes all phenomenon that are aligned with the discovery in cognitive studies. Our benchmark will be open-sourced, with the aspiration of facilitating the enhancement of cognitive capabilities in MLLMs.

IFNet: Deep Imaging and Focusing for Handheld SAR with Millimeter-wave Signals

Recent advancements have showcased the potential of handheld millimeter-wave (mmWave) imaging, which applies synthetic aperture radar (SAR) principles in portable settings. However, existing studies addressing handheld motion errors either rely on costly tracking devices or employ simplified imaging models, leading to impractical deployment or limited performance. In this paper, we present IFNet, a novel deep unfolding network that combines the strengths of signal processing models and deep neural networks to achieve robust imaging and focusing for handheld mmWave systems. We first formulate the handheld imaging model by integrating multiple priors about mmWave images and handheld phase errors. Furthermore, we transform the optimization processes into an iterative network structure for improved and efficient imaging performance. Extensive experiments demonstrate that IFNet effectively compensates for handheld phase errors and recovers high-fidelity images from severely distorted signals. In comparison with existing methods, IFNet can achieve at least 11.89 dB improvement in average peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and 64.91% improvement in average structural similarity index measure (SSIM) on a real-world dataset.

DREAM-PCD: Deep Reconstruction and Enhancement of mmWave Radar Pointcloud

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar pointcloud offers attractive potential for 3D sensing, thanks to its robustness in challenging conditions such as smoke and low illumination. However, existing methods failed to simultaneously address the three main challenges in mmWave radar pointcloud reconstruction: specular information lost, low angular resolution, and strong interference and noise. In this paper, we propose DREAM-PCD, a novel framework that combines signal processing and deep learning methods into three well-designed components to tackle all three challenges: Non-Coherent Accumulation for dense points, Synthetic Aperture Accumulation for improved angular resolution, and Real-Denoise Multiframe network for noise and interference removal. Moreover, the causal multiframe and "real-denoise" mechanisms in DREAM-PCD significantly enhance the generalization performance. We also introduce RadarEyes, the largest mmWave indoor dataset with over 1,000,000 frames, featuring a unique design incorporating two orthogonal single-chip radars, lidar, and camera, enriching dataset diversity and applications. Experimental results demonstrate that DREAM-PCD surpasses existing methods in reconstruction quality, and exhibits superior generalization and real-time capabilities, enabling high-quality real-time reconstruction of radar pointcloud under various parameters and scenarios. We believe that DREAM-PCD, along with the RadarEyes dataset, will significantly advance mmWave radar perception in future real-world applications.

Task-Specific Data Augmentation and Inference Processing for VIPriors Instance Segmentation Challenge

Instance segmentation is applied widely in image editing, image analysis and autonomous driving, etc. However, insufficient data is a common problem in practical applications. The Visual Inductive Priors(VIPriors) Instance Segmentation Challenge has focused on this problem. VIPriors for Data-Efficient Computer Vision Challenges ask competitors to train models from scratch in a data-deficient setting, but there are some visual inductive priors that can be used. In order to address the VIPriors instance segmentation problem, we designed a Task-Specific Data Augmentation(TS-DA) strategy and Inference Processing(TS-IP) strategy. The main purpose of task-specific data augmentation strategy is to tackle the data-deficient problem. And in order to make the most of visual inductive priors, we designed a task-specific inference processing strategy. We demonstrate the applicability of proposed method on VIPriors Instance Segmentation Challenge. The segmentation model applied is Hybrid Task Cascade based detector on the Swin-Base based CBNetV2 backbone. Experimental results demonstrate that proposed method can achieve a competitive result on the test set of 2022 VIPriors Instance Segmentation Challenge, with 0.531 AP@0.50:0.95.

Towards Domain-Independent and Real-Time Gesture Recognition Using mmWave Signal

Human gesture recognition using millimeter-wave (mmWave) signals provides attractive applications including smart home and in-car interfaces. While existing works achieve promising performance under controlled settings, practical applications are still limited due to the need of intensive data collection, extra training efforts when adapting to new domains, and poor performance for real-time recognition. In this paper, we propose DI-Gesture, a domain-independent and real-time mmWave gesture recognition system. Specifically, we first derive signal variations corresponding to human gestures with spatial-temporal processing. To enhance the robustness of the system and reduce data collecting efforts, we design a data augmentation framework for mmWave signals based on correlations between signal patterns and gesture variations. Furthermore, a spatial-temporal gesture segmentation algorithm is employed for real-time recognition. Extensive experimental results show DI-Gesture achieves an average accuracy of 97.92\%, 99.18\%, and 98.76\% for new users, environments, and locations, respectively. We also evaluate DI-Gesture in challenging scenarios like real-time recognition and sensing at extreme angles, all of which demonstrate the superior robustness and effectiveness of our system.

Strong Instance Segmentation Pipeline for MMSports Challenge

The goal of ACM MMSports2022 DeepSportRadar Instance Segmentation Challenge is to tackle the segmentation of individual humans including players, coaches and referees on a basketball court. And the main characteristics of this challenge are there is a high level of occlusions between players and the amount of data is quite limited. In order to address these problems, we designed a strong instance segmentation pipeline. Firstly, we employed a proper data augmentation strategy for this task mainly including photometric distortion transform and copy-paste strategy, which can generate more image instances with a wider distribution. Secondly, we employed a strong segmentation model, Hybrid Task Cascade based detector on the Swin-Base based CBNetV2 backbone, and we add MaskIoU head to HTCMaskHead that can simply and effectively improve the performance of instance segmentation. Finally, the SWA training strategy was applied to improve the performance further. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed pipeline can achieve a competitive result on the DeepSportRadar challenge, with 0.768AP@0.50:0.95 on the challenge set. Style Variable and Irrelevant Learning for Generalizable Person Re-identification

Recently, due to the poor performance of supervised person re-identification (ReID) to an unseen domain, Domain Generalization (DG) person ReID has attracted a lot of attention which aims to learn a domain-insensitive model and can resist the influence of domain bias. In this paper, we first verify through an experiment that style factors are a vital part of domain bias. Base on this conclusion, we propose a Style Variable and Irrelevant Learning (SVIL) method to eliminate the effect of style factors on the model. Specifically, we design a Style Jitter Module (SJM) in SVIL. The SJM module can enrich the style diversity of the specific source domain and reduce the style differences of various source domains. This leads to the model focusing on identity-relevant information and being insensitive to the style changes. Besides, we organically combine the SJM module with a meta-learning algorithm, maximizing the benefits and further improving the generalization ability of the model. Note that our SJM module is plug-and-play and inference cost-free. Extensive experiments confirm the effectiveness of our SVIL and our method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on DG-ReID benchmarks by a large margin.

Symmetric Network with Spatial Relationship Modeling for Natural Language-based Vehicle Retrieval

Natural language (NL) based vehicle retrieval aims to search specific vehicle given text description. Different from the image-based vehicle retrieval, NL-based vehicle retrieval requires considering not only vehicle appearance, but also surrounding environment and temporal relations. In this paper, we propose a Symmetric Network with Spatial Relationship Modeling (SSM) method for NL-based vehicle retrieval. Specifically, we design a symmetric network to learn the unified cross-modal representations between text descriptions and vehicle images, where vehicle appearance details and vehicle trajectory global information are preserved. Besides, to make better use of location information, we propose a spatial relationship modeling methods to take surrounding environment and mutual relationship between vehicles into consideration. The qualitative and quantitative experiments verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. We achieve 43.92% MRR accuracy on the test set of the 6th AI City Challenge on natural language-based vehicle retrieval track, yielding the 1st place among all valid submissions on the public leaderboard. Vehicle Re-identification Method Based on Vehicle Attribute and Mutual Exclusion Between Cameras

Vehicle Re-identification aims to identify a specific vehicle across time and camera view. With the rapid growth of intelligent transportation systems and smart cities, vehicle Re-identification technology gets more and more attention. However, due to the difference of shooting angle and the high similarity of vehicles belonging to the same brand, vehicle re-identification becomes a great challenge for existing method. In this paper, we propose a vehicle attribute-guided method to re-rank vehicle Re-ID result. The attributes used include vehicle orientation and vehicle brand . We also focus on the camera information and introduce camera mutual exclusion theory to further fine-tune the search results. In terms of feature extraction, we combine the data augmentations of multi-resolutions with the large model ensemble to get a more robust vehicle features. Our method achieves mAP of 63.73% and rank-1 accuracy 76.61% in the CVPR 2021 AI City Challenge.

Parsing-based View-aware Embedding Network for Vehicle Re-Identification

Vehicle Re-Identification is to find images of the same vehicle from various views in the cross-camera scenario. The main challenges of this task are the large intra-instance distance caused by different views and the subtle inter-instance discrepancy caused by similar vehicles. In this paper, we propose a parsing-based view-aware embedding network (PVEN) to achieve the view-aware feature alignment and enhancement for vehicle ReID. First, we introduce a parsing network to parse a vehicle into four different views, and then align the features by mask average pooling. Such alignment provides a fine-grained representation of the vehicle. Second, in order to enhance the view-aware features, we design a common-visible attention to focus on the common visible views, which not only shortens the distance among intra-instances, but also enlarges the discrepancy of inter-instances. The PVEN helps capture the stable discriminative information of vehicle under different views. The experiments conducted on three datasets show that our model outperforms state-of-the-art methods by a large margin.

Vehicle Re-identification with Viewpoint-aware Metric Learning

This paper considers vehicle re-identification (re-ID) problem. The extreme viewpoint variation (up to 180 degrees) poses great challenges for existing approaches. Inspired by the behavior in human's recognition process, we propose a novel viewpoint-aware metric learning approach. It learns two metrics for similar viewpoints and different viewpoints in two feature spaces, respectively, giving rise to viewpoint-aware network (VANet). During training, two types of constraints are applied jointly. During inference, viewpoint is firstly estimated and the corresponding metric is used. Experimental results confirm that VANet significantly improves re-ID accuracy, especially when the pair is observed from different viewpoints. Our method establishes the new state-of-the-art on two benchmarks.

Shapley Interpretation and Activation in Neural Networks

We propose a novel Shapley value approach to help address neural networks' interpretability and "vanishing gradient" problems. Our method is based on an accurate analytical approximation to the Shapley value of a neuron with ReLU activation. This analytical approximation admits a linear propagation of relevance across neural network layers, resulting in a simple, fast and sensible interpretation of neural networks' decision making process. We then derived a globally continuous and non-vanishing Shapley gradient, which can replace the conventional gradient in training neural network layers with ReLU activation, and leading to better training performance. We further derived a Shapley Activation (SA) function, which is a close approximation to ReLU but features the Shapley gradient. The SA is easy to implement in existing machine learning frameworks. Numerical tests show that SA consistently outperforms ReLU in training convergence, accuracy and stability.

Investigation of toroidal acceleration and potential acceleration forces in EAST and J-TEXT plasmas

In order to produce intrinsic rotation, bulk plasmas must be collectively accelerated by the net force exerted on them, which results from both driving and damping forces. So, to study the possible mechanisms of intrinsic rotation generation, it is only needed to understand characteristics of driving and damping terms because the toroidal driving and damping forces induce net acceleration which generates intrinsic rotation. Experiments were performed on EAST and J-TEXT for ohmic plasmas with net counter- and co-current toroidal acceleration generated by density ramping up and ramping down. Additionally on EAST, net co-current toroidal acceleration was also formed by LHCD or ICRF. For the current experimental results, toroidal acceleration was between - 50 km/s^2 in counter-current direction and 70 km/s^2 in co-current direction. According to toroidal momentum equation, toroidal electric field (E\-(\g(f))), electron-ion toroidal friction, and toroidal viscous force etc. may play roles in the evolution of toroidal rotation. To evaluate contribution of each term, we first analyze characteristics of E\-(\g(f)). E\-(\g(f)) is one of the co-current toroidal forces that acts on the plasma as a whole and persists for the entire discharge period. It was shown to drive the co-current toroidal acceleration at a magnitude of 10^3 km/s^2, which was much larger than the experimental toroidal acceleration observed on EAST and J-TEXT. So E\-(\g(f)) is one of co-current forces producing cocurrent intrinsic toroidal acceleration and rotation. Meanwhile, it indicates that there must be a strong counter-current toroidal acceleration resulting from counter-current toroidal forces. Electron-ion toroidal friction is one of the counter-current toroidal forces because global electrons move in the counter-current direction in order to produce a toroidal plasma current.

Estimation of Extreme Quantiles for Functions of Dependent Random Variables

We propose a new method for estimating the extreme quantiles for a function of several dependent random variables. In contrast to the conventional approach based on extreme value theory, we do not impose the condition that the tail of the underlying distribution admits an approximate parametric form, and, furthermore, our estimation makes use of the full observed data. The proposed method is semiparametric as no parametric forms are assumed on all the marginal distributions. But we select appropriate bivariate copulas to model the joint dependence structure by taking the advantage of the recent development in constructing large dimensional vine copulas. Consequently a sample quantile resulted from a large bootstrap sample drawn from the fitted joint distribution is taken as the estimator for the extreme quantile. This estimator is proved to be consistent. The reliable and robust performance of the proposed method is further illustrated by simulation.
