The Haagerup property is stable under graph products

The Haagerup property, which is a strong converse of Kazhdan's property $(T)$, has translations and applications in various fields of mathematics such as representation theory, harmonic analysis, operator K-theory and so on. Moreover, this group property implies the Baum-Connes conjecture and related Novikov conjecture. The Haagerup property is not preserved under arbitrary group extensions and amalgamated free products over infinite groups, but it is preserved under wreath products and amalgamated free products over finite groups. In this paper, we show that it is also preserved under graph products. We moreover give bounds on the equivariant and non-equivariant $L_p$-compressions of a graph product in terms of the corresponding compressions of the vertex groups. Finally, we give an upper bound on the asymptotic dimension in terms of the asymptotic dimensions of the vertex groups. This generalizes a result from Dranishnikov on the asymptotic dimension of right-angled Coxeter groups.

Kurosh rank of intersections of subgroups of free products of orderable groups

We prove that the reduced Kurosh rank of the intersection of two subgroups $H$ and $K$ of a free product of right-orderable groups is bounded above by the product of the reduced Kurosh ranks of $H$ and $K$. In particular, taking the fundamental group of a graph of groups with trivial vertex and edge groups, and its Bass-Serre tree, our Theorem becomes the desired inequality of the usual Strengthened Hanna Neumann conjecture for free groups.

Tits alternatives for graph products

We discuss various types of Tits Alternative for subgroups of graph products of groups, and prove that, under some natural conditions, a graph product of groups satisfies a given form of Tits Alternative if and only if each vertex group satisfies this alternative. As a corollary, we show that every finitely generated subgroup of a graph product of virtually solvable groups is either virtually solvable or large. As another corollary, we prove that every non-abelian subgroup of a right angled Artin group has an epimorphism onto the free group of rank 2. In the course of the paper we develop the theory of parabolic subgroups, which allows to describe the structure of subgroups of graph products that contain no non-abelian free subgroups. We also obtain a number of results regarding the stability of some group properties under taking graph products.

Geodesic growth in right-angled and even Coxeter groups

The objective of this paper is to detect which combinatorial properties of a regular graph can completely determine the geodesic growth of the right-angled Coxeter or Artin group this graph defines, and to provide the first examples of right-angled and even Coxeter groups with the same geodesic growth series.

On the classifying space for proper actions of groups with cyclic torsion

In this paper we introduce a common framework for describing the topological part of the Baum-Connes conjecture for a wide class of groups. We compute the Bredon homology for groups with aspherical presentation, one-relator quotients of products of locally indicable groups, extensions of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ by cyclic groups, and fuchsian groups. We take advantage of the torsion structure of these groups to use appropriate models of the universal space for proper actions which allow us, in turn, to extend some technology defined by Mislin in the case of one-relator groups.

On the asymptotics of visible elements and homogeneous equations in surface groups

Let $F$ be a group whose abelianization is $\Z^k$, $k\geq 2.$ An element of $F$ is called visible if its image in the abelianization is visible, that is, the greatest common divisor of its coordinates is 1. In this paper we compute three types of densities, annular, even and odd spherical, of visible elements in surface groups. We then use our results to show that the probability of a homogeneous equation in a surface group to have solutions is neither 0 nor 1, as the lengths of the right- and left-hand side of the equation go to infinity.

On the local-indicability Cohen-Lyndon Theorem

For a group $H$ and a subset $X$ of $H$, we let ${}^HX$ denote the set $\{hxh^{-1} \mid h \in H, x \in X\}$, and when $X$ is a free-generating set of $H$, we say that the set ${}^HX$ is a Whitehead subset of $H$. For a group $F$ and an element $r$ of $F$, we say that $r$ is Cohen-Lyndon aspherical in $F$ if ${}^F\{r\}$ is a Whitehead subset of the subgroup of $F$ that is generated by ${}^F\{r\}$. In 1963, D. E. Cohen and R. C. Lyndon independently showed that in each free group each non-trivial element is Cohen-Lyndon aspherical. In 1987, M. Edjvet and J. Howie showed that if $A$ and $B$ are locally indicable groups, then each cyclically reduced element of $A \ast B$ that does not lie in $A \cup B$ is Cohen-Lyndon aspherical in $A \ast B$. Using Bass-Serre Theory and the Edjvet-Howie Theorem, one can deduce the local-indicability Cohen-Lyndon Theorem: if $F$ is a locally indicable group and $T$ is an $F$-tree with trivial edge stabilizers, then each element of $F$ that fixes no vertex of $T$ is Cohen-Lyndon aspherical in $F$. Conversely, the Cohen-Lyndon Theorem and the Edjvet-Howie Theorem are immediate consequences of the local-indicability Cohen-Lyndon Theorem. In this article, we give a detailed review of Howie induction and arrange the arguments of Edjvet and Howie into a Howie-inductive proof of the local-indicability Cohen-Lyndon Theorem that does not use Magnus induction or the Cohen-Lyndon Theorem. We conclude with a review of some standard applications of Cohen-Lyndon asphericity.
