Local bifurcations in a class of piecewise-smooth Filippov systems with a nonregular switching curve via a nonlinear double regularization process

We are interested in analyzing the preservation of bifurcations in a class of piecewise smooth vector fields with a nonregular switching set under a smoothing process that approximates them by smooth vector fields. We examine cases in which the codimension is either preserved or altered, as well as whether the generic nature of the bifurcation is maintained.

Crossing limit cycles in piecewise smooth Kolmogorov systems: an application to Palomba's model

In this paper, we study the number of isolated crossing periodic orbits, so-called crossing limit cycles, for a class of piecewise smooth Kolmogorov systems defined in two zones separated by a straight line. In particular, we study the number of crossing limit cycles of small amplitude. They are all nested and surround one equilibrium point or a sliding segment. We denote by $\mathcal M_{K}^{p}(n)$ the maximum number of crossing limit cycles bifurcating from the equilibrium point via a degenerate Hopf bifurcation for a piecewise smooth Kolmogorov systems of degree $n=m+1$. We make a progress towards the determination of the lower bounds $M_K^p(n)$ of crossing limit cycles bifurcating from the equilibrium point via a degenerate Hopf bifurcation for a piecewise smooth Kolmogorov system of degree $n$. Specifically, we shot that $M_{K}^{p}(2)\geq 1$, $M_{K}^{p}(3)\geq 12$, and $M_{K}^{p}(4)\geq 18$. In particular, we show at least one crossing limit cycle in Palomba's economics model, considering it from a piecewise smooth point of view. To our knowledge, these are the best quotes of limit cycles for piecewise smooth polynomial Kolmogorov systems in the literature.

Study of Poincare map and limit cycles for non-smooth Welander's system

In this work, our primary goal is to study the Poincare map and the existence of limit cycles for Welander's model that describes ocean convection. Welander developed two versions of his model, one with a smooth transition between convective states, and one with an abrupt non-smooth change. Our focus in this paper is to study the non-smooth model. Approaching through the Poincare Map, we demonstrate analytically the bifurcation of a stable limit cycle surrounding an escaping segment.

New lower bound for the Hilbert number in low degree Kolmogorov systems

Our main goal in this paper is to study the number of small-amplitude isolated periodic orbits, so-called limit cycles, surrounding only one equilibrium point a class of polynomial Kolmogorov systems. We denote by $\mathcal M_{K}(n)$ the maximum number of limit cycles bifurcating from the equilibrium point via a degenerate Hopf bifurcation for a polynomial Kolmogorov vector field of degree $n$. In this work, we obtain another example such that $ \mathcal M_{K}(3)\geq 6$. In addition, we obtain new lower bounds for $\mathcal M_{K}(n)$ proving that $\mathcal M_{K}(4)\geq 13$ and $\mathcal M_{K}(5)\geq 22$.

Crossing limit cycles of planar discontinuous piecewise differential systems formed by isochronous centers

These last years an increasing interest appeared for studying the planar discontinuous piecewise differential systems motivated by the rich applications in modelling real phenomena. One of the difficulties for understanding the dynamics of these systems is the study their limit cycles. In this paper we study the maximum number of crossing limit cycles of some classes of planar discontinuous piecewise differential systems separated by a straight line, and formed by combinations of linear centers (consequently isochronous) and cubic isochronous centers with homogeneous nonlinearities. For these classes of planar discontinuous piecewise differential systems we solved the extension of the 16th Hilbert problem, i.e. we provide an upper bound for their maximum number of crossing limit cycles.

Limit cycles for some families of smooth and non-smooth planar systems

In this paper, we apply the averaging method via Brouwer degree in a class of planar systems given by a linear center perturbed by a sum of continuous homogeneous vector fields, to study lower bounds for their number of limit cycles. Our results can be applied to models where the smoothness is lost on the set $Σ=\{xy=0\}$. We also apply them to present a variant of Hilbert 16th problem, where the goal is to bound the number of limit cycles in terms of the number of monomials of a family of polynomial vector fields, instead of doing this in terms of their degrees.

The local period function for Hamiltonian systems with applications

In the first part of the paper we develop a constructive procedure to obtain the Taylor expansion, in terms of the energy, of the period function for a non-degenerated center of any planar analytic Hamiltonian system. We apply it to several examples, including the whirling pendulum and a cubic Hamiltonian system. The knowledge of this Taylor expansion of the period function for this system is one of the key points to study the number of zeroes of an Abelian integral that controls the number of limit cycles bifurcating from the periodic orbits of a planar Hamiltonian system that is inspired by a physical model on capillarity. Several other classical tools, like for instance Chebyshev systems are applied to study this number of zeroes. The approach introduced can also be applied in other situations.
