Ultrafast photoinduced phase transition in the antiferromagnetic Dirac semimetal EuAgAs

We report the observation of a light-induced subpicosecond phase transition in the antiferromagnetic Dirac semimetal EuAgAs, achieved through ultrafast optical excitation. Using ultrafast optical spectroscopy, we probe the nonequilibrium carrier dynamics, discovering distinct fluence-dependent responses in the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic states, and revealing a possible magnetic order-driven transition between different topological states. Our results demonstrate that EuAgAs, with its highly tunable magnetic structure, possibly offers a unique platform for exploring topological phase transitions. These results underscore the potential of ultrashort optical pulses as powerful tools for the real-time control of topological phases, opening pathways for advances in spintronics, quantum computing, and energy-efficient information technologies.

Chiral topological metals with multiple types of quasiparticle fermions and large spin Hall effect in the SrGePt family materials

We present a prediction of chiral topological metals with several classes of unconventional quasiparticle fermions in a family of SrGePt-type materials in terms of first-principles calculations. In these materials, fourfold spin-3/2 Rarita-Schwinger-Weyl (RSW) fermion, sixfold excitation, and Weyl fermions coexist around the Fermi level as spin-orbit coupling is considered, and the Chern number for the first two kinds of fermions is the maximal value four. We found that large Fermi arcs from spin-3/2 RSW fermion emerge on the (010)-surface, spanning the whole surface Brillouin zone. Moreover, there exist Fermi arcs originating from Weyl points, which further overlap with trivial bulk bands. In addition, we revealed that the large spin Hall conductivity can be obtained, which attributed to the remarkable spin Berry curvature around the degenerate nodes and band-splitting induced by spin-orbit coupling. Our findings indicate that the SrGePt family of compounds provide an excellent platform for studying on topological electronic states and the intrinsic spin Hall effect.

Multiple magnetism controlled topological states in EuAgAs

The interplay between magnetism and band topology is a focus of current research on magnetic topological systems. Based on first-principle calculations and symmetry analysis, we reveal multiple intriguing topological states can be realized in a single system EuAgAs, controlled by the magnetic ordering. The material is Dirac semimetal in the paramagnetic state, with a pair of accidental Dirac points. Under different magnetic configurations, the Dirac points can evolve into magnetic triply-degenerate points, magnetic linear and double Weyl points, or being gapped out and making the system a topological mirror semimetal characterized by mirror Chern numbers. The change in bulk topology is also manifested in the surface states, including the surface Fermi arcs and surface Dirac cones. In addition, the antiferromagnetic states also feature a nontrivial Z4 index, implying a higher order topology. These results deepen our understanding of magnetic topological states and provide new perspectives for spintronic applications.
