Asymptotics of Weil-Petersson geodesics I: ending laminations, recurrence, and flows

We define an ending lamination for a Weil-Petersson geodesic ray. Despite the lack of a natural visual boundary for the Weil-Petersson metric, these ending laminations provide an effective boundary theory that encodes much of its asymptotic CAT(0) geometry. In particular, we prove an ending lamination theorem (Theorem 1.1) for the full-measure set of rays that recur to the thick part, and we show that the association of an ending lamination embeds asymptote classes of recurrent rays into the Gromov-boundary of the curve complex. As an application, we establish fundamentals of the topological dynamics of the Weil-Petersson geodesic flow, showing density of closed orbits and topological transitivity.

High distance knots

We construct knots in S^3 with Heegaard splittings of arbitrarily high distance, in any genus. As an application, for any positive integers t and b we find a tunnel number t knot in the three-sphere which has no (t,b)-decomposition.

Laminations in holomorphic dynamics

We suggest a way to associate to a rational map of the Riemann sphere a three dimensional object called a hyperbolic orbifold 3-lamination. The relation of this object to the map is analogous to the relation of a hyperbolic 3-manifold to a Kleinian group. In order to construct the 3-lamination we analyze the natural extension of a rational map and the complex affine structure on the canonical 2-dimensional leaf space contained in it. In this paper the construction is carried out in full for post-critically finite maps. We show that the corresponding laminations have a compact convex core. As a first application we give a three-dimensional proof of Thurston's rigidity for post-critically finite mappings, via the "lamination extension" of the proofs of the Mostow and Marden rigidity and isomorphism theorems for hyperbolic 3-manifolds. An Ahlfors-type argument for zero measure of the Julia set is applied along the way. This approach also provides a new point of view on the Lattes deformable examples.

Quasi-projections in Teichmüller space

We consider a geometric property of the closest-points projection to a geodesic in Teichmüller space: the projection is called contracting if arbitrarily large balls away from the geodesic project to sets of bounded diameter. (This property always holds in negatively curved spaces.) It is shown here to hold if and only if the geodesic is precompact, i.e. its image in the moduli space is contained in a compact set. Some applications are given, e.g. to stability properties of certain quasi-geodesics in Teichmüller space, and to estimates of translation distance for pseudo-Anosov maps.

Extremal length estimates and product regions in Teichmüller space

We study the Teichmüller metric on the Teichmüller space of a surface of finite type, in regions where the injectivity radius of the surface is small. The main result is that in such regions the Teichmüller metric is approximated up to bounded additive distortion by the sup metric on a product of lower dimensional spaces. The main technical tool in the proof is the use of estimates of extremal lengths of curves in a surface based on the geometry of their hyperbolic geodesic representatives.
