A study of nonlinear multiview varieties

We study the nonlinear generalization of the classical multiview variety, which is a fundamental concept in computer vision. In this paper, we take the first comprehensive step to develop the nonlinear analogue of multiview varieties. To this end, we introduce a multigraded version of the saturated special fiber ring. By applying this tool, we are able to compute the multidegrees of several families of nonlinear multiview varieties.

A local study of the fiber-full scheme

We study some of the local properties of the fiber-full scheme, which is a fine moduli space that generalizes the Hilbert scheme by parametrizing closed subschemes with prescribed cohomological data. As a consequence, we provide sufficient conditions for cohomology to remain constant under Gröbner degenerations. We also describe a tangent-obstruction theory for the fiber-full scheme in analogy with the one for the Hilbert scheme.

Multidegrees, prime ideals, and non-standard gradings

We study several properties of multihomogeneous prime ideals. We show that the multigraded generic initial ideal of a prime has very special properties, for instance, its radical is Cohen-Macaulay. We develop a comprehensive study of multidegrees in arbitrary positive multigraded settings. In these environments, we extend the notion of Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals by means of a standardization technique. Furthermore, we recover or extend important results in the literature, for instance: we provide a multidegree version of Hartshorne's result stating the upper semicontinuity of arithmetic degree under flat degenerations, and we give an alternative proof of Brion's result regarding multiplicity-free varieties.

Fiber-full modules and a local freeness criterion for local cohomology modules

Let $R$ be a finitely generated positively graded algebra over a Noetherian local ring $B$, and $\mathfrak{m} = [R]_+$ be the graded irrelevant ideal of $R$. We provide a local criterion characterizing the $B$-freeness of all the local cohomology modules $\text{H}_\mathfrak{m}^i(M)$ of a finitely generated graded $R$-module $M$. We show that fiber-full modules are exactly the ones that satisfy this criterion. When we change $B$ by an arbitrary Noetherian ring $A$, we study the fiber-full locus of a module in $\text{Spec}(A)$: we show that the fiber-full locus is always an open subset of $\text{Spec}(A)$ and that it is dense when $A$ is generically reduced.

Primary Decomposition with Differential Operators

We introduce differential primary decompositions for ideals in a commutative ring. Ideal membership is characterized by differential conditions. The minimal number of conditions needed is the arithmetic multiplicity. Minimal differential primary decompositions are unique up to change of bases. Our results generalize the construction of Noetherian operators for primary ideals in the analytic theory of Ehrenpreis-Palamodov, and they offer a concise method for representing affine schemes. The case of modules is also addressed. We implemented an algorithm in Macaulay2 that computes the minimal decomposition for an ideal in a polynomial ring.

Primary decomposition of modules: a computational differential approach

We study primary submodules and primary decompositions from a differential and computational point of view. Our main theoretical contribution is a general structure theory and a representation theorem for primary submodules of an arbitrary finitely generated module over a polynomial ring. We characterize primary submodules in terms of differential operators and punctual Quot schemes. Moreover, we introduce and implement an algorithm that computes a minimal differential primary decomposition for a module.

Mixed multiplicities of graded families of ideals

We show the existence (and define) the mixed multiplicities of arbitrary graded families of ideals under mild assumptions. In particular, our methods and results are valid for the case of arbitrary $\mathfrak{m}$-primary graded families. Furthermore, we provide a far-reaching "Volume = Multiplicity formula" for the mixed multiplicities of graded families of ideals.

Convex bodies and graded families of monomial ideals

We show that the mixed volumes of arbitrary convex bodies are equal to mixed multiplicities of graded families of monomial ideals, and to normalized limits of mixed multiplicities of monomial ideals. This result evinces the close relation between the theories of mixed volumes from convex geometry and mixed multiplicities from commutative algebra.

Noetherian Operators in Macaulay2

A primary ideal in a polynomial ring can be described by the variety it defines and a finite set of Noetherian operators, which are differential operators with polynomial coefficients. We implement both symbolic and numerical algorithms to produce such a description in various scenarios as well as routines for studying affine schemes through the prism of Noetherian operators and Macaulay dual spaces.

Primary ideals and their differential equations

An ideal in a polynomial ring encodes a system of linear partial differential equations with constant coefficients. Primary decomposition organizes the solutions to the PDE. This paper develops a novel structure theory for primary ideals in a polynomial ring. We characterize primary ideals in terms of PDE, punctual Hilbert schemes, relative Weyl algebras, and the join construction. Solving the PDE described by a primary ideal amounts to computing Noetherian operators in the sense of Ehrenpreis and Palamodov. We develop new algorithms for this task, and we present efficient implementations.

Equations and multidegrees for inverse symmetric matrix pairs

We compute the equations and multidegrees of the biprojective variety that parametrizes pairs of symmetric matrices that are inverse to each other. As a consequence of our work, we provide an alternative proof for a result of Manivel, Michalek, Monin, Seynnaeve and Vodička that settles a previous conjecture of Sturmfels and Uhler regarding the polynomiality of maximum likelihood degree.

Generic freeness of local cohomology and graded specialization

The main focus is the generic freeness of local cohomology modules in a graded setting. The present approach takes place in a quite nonrestrictive setting, by solely assuming that the ground coefficient ring is Noetherian. Under additional assumptions, such as when the latter is reduced or a domain, the outcome turns out to be stronger. One important application of these considerations is to the specialization of rational maps and of symmetric and Rees powers of a module.

When are multidegrees positive?

Let $k$ be an arbitrary field, $P = P_k^{m_1} \times_k \cdots \times_k P_k^{m_p}$ be a multiprojective space over $k$, and $X \subseteq P$ be a closed subscheme of $P$. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the positivity of the multidegrees of $X$. As a consequence of our methods, we show that when $X$ is irreducible, the support of multidegrees forms a discrete algebraic polymatroid. In algebraic terms, we characterize the positivity of the mixed multiplicities of a standard multigraded algebra over an Artinian local ring, and we apply this to the positivity of mixed multiplicities of ideals. Furthermore, we use our results to recover several results in the literature in the context of combinatorial algebraic geometry.

Degree of rational maps via specialization

One considers the behavior of the degree of a rational map under specialization of the coefficients of the defining linear system. The method rests on the classical idea of Kronecker as applied to the context of projective schemes and their specializations. For the theory to work one is led to develop the details of rational maps and their graphs when the ground ring of coefficients is a Noetherian integral domain.

Multiplicity of the saturated special fiber ring of height three Gorenstein ideals

Let $R$ be a polynomial ring over a field and $I \subset R$ be a Gorenstein ideal of height three that is minimally generated by homogeneous polynomials of the same degree. We compute the multiplicity of the saturated special fiber ring of $I$. The obtained formula depends only on the number of variables of $R$, the minimal number of generators of $I$, and the degree of the syzygies of $I$. Applying results from arXiv:1805.05180, we get a formula for the $j$-multiplicity of $I$ and an effective method to study a rational map determined by a minimal set of generators of $I$.

Mixed multiplicities and projective degrees of rational maps

We consider the notion of mixed multiplicities for multigraded modules by using Hilbert series, and this is later applied to study the projective degrees of rational maps. We use a general framework to determine the projective degrees of a rational map via a computation of the multiplicity of the saturated special fiber ring. As specific applications, we provide explicit formulas for all the projective degrees of rational maps determined by perfect ideals of height two or by Gorenstein ideals of height three.

Degree and birationality of multi-graded rational maps

We give formulas and effective sharp bounds for the degree of multi-graded rational maps and provide some effective and computable criteria for birationality in terms of their algebraic and geometric properties. We also extend the Jacobian dual criterion to the multi-graded setting. Our approach is based on the study of blow-up algebras, including syzygies, of the ideal generated by the defining polynomials of the rational map. A key ingredient is a new algebra that we call the "saturated special fiber ring", which turns out to be a fundamental tool to analyze the degree of a rational map. We also provide a very effective birationality criterion and a complete description of the equations of the associated Rees algebra of a particular class of plane rational maps.

Noetherian operators, primary submodules and symbolic powers

We give an algebraic and self-contained proof of the existence of the so-called Noetherian operators for primary submodules over general classes of Noetherian commutative rings. The existence of Noetherian operators accounts to provide an equivalent description of primary submodules in terms of differential operators. As a consequence, we introduce a new notion of differential powers which coincides with symbolic powers in many interesting non-smooth settings, and so it could serve as a generalization of the Zariski-Nagata Theorem.
