Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces for Resolution-Constrained Near-Field Range Extension in 6G Systems

Near-field electromagnetic focusing is central to 6G communication, sensing, and integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. However, for a fixed aperture, the resolution-constrained usable range of conventional single-layer transmissive metasurfaces is far shorter than the classical Rayleigh distance. This discrepancy stems not from fundamental near-field physics limitations, but from inadequate wavefront control, implementation imperfections, and the quadratic degradation of axial resolution with distance. To quantify this gap, we distinguish the Rayleigh distance from the engineering-usable near-field distance (UNFD), defined as the maximum range where predefined focusing gain and resolution requirements are jointly satisfied. Under identical aperture, feed, and input power constraints, we investigate how stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIMs) extend UNFD via cascaded wavefront shaping. A unified framework combining effective-phase-distance and discrete Green's-function operator perspectives is developed, interpreting multilayer SIM design as an operator approximation problem for ideal near-field focusing. We derive low-complexity analytical models revealing an inherent distance-resolution dilemma: lateral resolution degrades linearly with distance, while axial resolution degrades quadratically, making axial performance the dominant bottleneck. Multilayer stacking mitigates this by improving wavefront curvature matching and reducing residual phase error. Engineering correction factors for practical imperfections and a higher-order phase framework for extreme near-field operation are incorporated. Numerical simulations confirm that increasing layer count pushes UNFD closer to the Rayleigh limit, but gains saturate as accumulated losses offset control flexibility benefits.

RIS-Enabled UAV Communications and Sensing: Opportunities, Challenges, and Key Technologies

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) play a pivotal role in the emerging low-altitude economy. However, they face significant challenges in achieving reliable network coverage during transit operations. This paper provides an in-depth investigation into the characteristics and challenges of communication networks tailored for UAVs. First, we outline typical operational scenarios, traffic patterns, and a dual-layer heterogeneous network topology. This topology is essential for enabling three-dimensional continuous coverage and ensuring seamless network coexistence between UAVs and other network entities. Moreover, the paper delves into the channel characteristics and specific challenges faced by UAV Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) networks. It highlights the limitations of traditional Active Phased Array Antenna (APAA)-based networks, particularly regarding cost, complexity, and site deployment constraints. We then introduce Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS)-assisted networks as a promising solution for enhancing UAV signal coverage. The key technical features of RIS are discussed, including design principles, antenna tilt configurations, new beam types, and beam tracking mechanisms. In addition, we examine the impact of highfrequency bands and their absorption peaks on signal attenuation. The paper further explores network architecture designs aimed at improving UAV signal coverage, facilitating network coexistence, and supporting RIS-enhanced UAV sensing. Field trial results evaluating the effectiveness of RIS in improving UAV coverage are presented. Finally, we outline future technological trends and highlight potential advancements to further optimize UAV communication systems. We also emphasize the importance of engineering implementation and standardization efforts in RIS-based UAV-ISAC networks.

Cascaded Channel Decoupling Based Solution for RIS Regulation Matrix

This article presents a novel solution for reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) based on cascaded channel decoupling. The proposed mechanism simplifies the RIS regulation matrix, by decomposing the electromagnetic wave regulation process into two sub-processes: virtual receiving response and virtual regular transmission, which leads to the decoupling of the RIS cascaded channel. This article further discusses the concrete implementation of the proposed channel decoupling mechanism in two scenarios of single-user access and multi-user access, and gives the corresponding detailed scheme. The numerical simulation results demonstrate that the proposed channel decoupling scheme is a low-complexity and effective solution for resolving the RIS regulation matrix.

Network Coexistence Analysis of RIS-Assisted Wireless Communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have attracted the attention of academia and industry circles because of their ability to control the electromagnetic characteristics of channel environments. However, it has been found that the introduction of an RIS may bring new and more serious network coexistence problems. It may even further deteriorate the network performance if these new network coexistence problems cannot be effectively solved. In this paper, an RIS network coexistence model is proposed and discussed in detail, and these problems are deeply analysed. Two novel RIS design mechanisms, including a novel multilayer RIS structure with an out-of-band filter and an RIS blocking mechanism, are further explored. Finally, numerical results and a discussion are given.

Cubic Metric Reduction for Repetitive CAZAC Sequences in frequency domain

In NR-based Access to Unlicensed Spectrum (NR-U) of 5G system, to satisfy the rules of Occupied Channel Bandwidth (OCB) of unlicensed spectrum, the channels of PRACH and PUCCH have to use some sequence repetition mechanisms in frequency domain. These repetition mechanisms will cause serious cubic metric(CM) problems for these channels, although these two types of channels are composed of Constant Amplitude Zero Auto-correlation(CAZAC) sequences.. Based on the characteristics of CAZAC sequences, which are used for PRACH and PUCCH (refer to PUCCH format 0 and format 1) in 5G NR, in this paper, we propose some new mechanisms of CM reduction for these two types of channels considering the design principles to ensure the sequence performance of the auto-correlation and cross-correlation. Then the proposed CM schemes are evaluated and the optimized parameters are further provided considering CM performance and the complexity.

Codebook Design and Beam Training for Extremely Large-Scale RIS: Far-Field or Near-Field?

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can improve the capacity of the wireless communication system by providing the extra link between the base station (BS) and the user. In order to resist the "multiplicative fading" effect, RIS is more likely to develop into extremely large-scale RIS (XL-RIS) for future 6G communications. Beam training is an effective way to acquire channel state information (CSI) for the XL-RIS assisted system. Existing beam training schemes rely on the far-field codebook, which is designed based on the far-field channel model. However, due to the large aperture of XL-RIS, the user is more likely to be in the near-field region of XL-RIS. The far-field codebook mismatches the near-field channel model. Thus, the existing far-field beam training scheme will cause severe performance loss in the XL-RIS assisted near-field communications. To solve this problem, we propose the efficient near-field beam training schemes by designing the near-field codebook to match the near-field channel model. Specifically, we firstly design the near-field codebook by considering the near-field cascaded array steering vector of XL-RIS. Then, the optimal codeword for XL-RIS is obtained by the exhausted training procedure between the XL-RIS and the user. In order to reduce the beam training overhead, we further design a hierarchical near-field codebook and propose the corresponding hierarchical near-field beam training scheme, where different levels of sub-codebooks are searched in turn with reduced codebook size. Simulation results show the two proposed near-field beam training schemes both perform better than the existing far-field beam training scheme. Particulary, the hierarchical near-field beam training scheme can greatly reduce the beam training overhead with acceptable performance loss.

AIRIS: Artificial Intelligence Enhanced Signal Processing in Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is an emerging meta-surface that can provide additional communications links through reflecting the signals, and has been recognized as a strong candidate of 6G mobile communications systems. Meanwhile, it has been recently admitted that implementing artificial intelligence (AI) into RIS communications will extensively benefit the reconfiguration capacity and enhance the robustness to complicated transmission environments. Besides the conventional model-driven approaches, AI can also deal with the existing signal processing problems in a data-driven manner via digging the inherent characteristic from the real data. Hence, AI is particularly suitable for the signal processing problems over RIS networks under unideal scenarios like modeling mismatching, insufficient resource, hardware impairment, as well as dynamical transmissions. As one of the earliest survey papers, we will introduce the merging of AI and RIS, called AIRIS, over various signal processing topics, including environmental sensing, channel acquisition, beamforming design, and resource scheduling, etc. We will also discuss the challenges of AIRIS and present some interesting future directions.

Some of them, such as holographic radio, terahertz communication, large intelligent surface, and orbital angular momentum, are of revolutionary nature and many related studies are still at their scientific exploration stage. Several technical areas, such as advanced channel coding and modulation, visible light communication, and advanced duplex, while having been studied, may find more opportunities in 6G.

Transmission Energy Minimization for Heterogeneous Low-Latency NOMA Downlink

This paper investigates the transmission energy minimization problem for the two-user downlink with strictly heterogeneous latency constraints. To cope with the latency constraints and to explicitly specify the trade-off between blocklength (latency) and reliability the normal approximation of the capacity of finite blocklength codes (FBCs) is adopted, in contrast to the classical Shannon capacity formula. We first consider the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) based transmission scheme. However, due to heterogeneous latency constraints and channel conditions at receivers, the conventional successive interference cancellation may be infeasible. We thus study the problem by considering heterogeneous receiver conditions under different interference mitigation schemes and solve the corresponding NOMA design problems. It is shown that, though the energy function is not convex and does not have closed form expression, the studied NOMA problems can be globally solved semi-analytically and with low complexity. Moreover, we propose a hybrid transmission scheme that combines the time division multiple access (TDMA) and NOMA. Specifically, the hybrid scheme can judiciously perform bit and time allocation and take TDMA and NOMA as two special instances. To handle the more challenging hybrid design problem, we propose a concave approximation of the FBC rate/capacity formula, by which we obtain computationally efficient and high-quality solutions. Simulation results show that the hybrid scheme can achieve considerable transmission energy saving compared with both pure NOMA and TDMA schemes.

Inter-Cell Antenna Calibration for Coherent Joint Transmission in TDD System

In this work the modeling and calibration method of reciprocity error in a coherent TDD coordinated multi-point (CoMP) joint transmission (JT) system are addressed. The modeling includes parameters such as amplitude gains and phase differences of RF chains between the eNBs. The calibration method used for inter-cell antenna calibration is based on precoding matrix indicator (PMI) feedback by UE. Furthermore, we provide some simulation results for evaluating the performance of the calibration method in different cases such as varying estimation-period, cell-specific reference signals (CRS) ports configuration, signal to noise ratio (SNR), phase difference, etc. The main conclusion is that the proposed method for intercell antenna calibration has good performance for estimating the residual phase difference. Energy-Efficient Non-Orthogonal Transmission under Reliability and Finite Blocklength Constraints

This paper investigates an energy-efficient non-orthogonal transmission design problem for two downlink receivers that have strict reliability and finite blocklength (latency) constraints. The Shannon capacity formula widely used in traditional designs needs the assumption of infinite blocklength and thus is no longer appropriate. We adopt the newly finite blocklength coding capacity formula for explicitly specifying the trade-off between reliability and code blocklength. However, conventional successive interference cancellation (SIC) may become infeasible due to heterogeneous blocklengths. We thus consider several scenarios with different channel conditions and with/without SIC. By carefully examining the problem structure, we present in closed-form the optimal power and code blocklength for energy-efficient transmissions. Simulation results provide interesting insights into conditions for which non-orthogonal transmission is more energy efficient than the orthogonal transmission such as TDMA.
