Star Formation and ISM Properties in Host Galaxies of Three Far-infrared Luminous Quasars at $z\sim6$

We present Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations of the CO (2$-$1) line emission towards three far-infrared luminous quasars at $z\sim6$: SDSS J231038.88$+$185519.7 and SDSS J012958.51$-$003539.7 with $\sim0\farcs6$ resolution and SDSS J205406.42$-$000514.8 with $\sim2\farcs1$ resolution. All three sources are detected in the CO (2$-$1) line emission -- one source is marginally resolved, and the other two appear as point sources. Measurements of the CO (2$-$1) line emission allow us to calculate the molecular gas mass even without a CO excitation model. The inferred molecular gas masses are (0.8$-$4.3) $\times$ 10$^{10}$ $M_{\odot}$. The widths and redshifts derived from the CO (2$-$1) line are consistent with previous CO (6$-$5) and [\ion{C}{2}] measurements. We also report continuum measurements using the Herschel for SDSS J231038.88$+$185519.7 and SDSS J012958.51$-$003539.7, and for SDSS J231038.88+185519.7, data obtained at $\sim140$ and $\sim300$ GHz using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). In the case of SDSS J231038.88+185519.7, we present a detailed analysis of the spectral energy distribution and derive the dust temperature ($\sim40$ K), the dust mass ($\sim10^{9}$ $M_{\odot}$), the far-infrared luminosity (8$-$1000 $μ$m; $\sim10^{13}$ $ L_{\odot}$) and the star formation rate (2400$-$2700 $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$). Finally, an analysis of the photo-dissociation regions associated with the three high redshift quasars indicates that the interstellar medium in these sources has similar properties to local starburst galaxies.

JINGLE, a JCMT legacy survey of dust and gas for galaxy evolution studies: I. Survey overview and first results

JINGLE is a new JCMT legacy survey designed to systematically study the cold interstellar medium of galaxies in the local Universe. As part of the survey we perform 850um continuum measurements with SCUBA-2 for a representative sample of 193 Herschel-selected galaxies with M*>10^9Msun, as well as integrated CO(2-1) line fluxes with RxA3m for a subset of 90 of these galaxies. The sample is selected from fields covered by the Herschel-ATLAS survey that are also targeted by the MaNGA optical integral-field spectroscopic survey. The new JCMT observations combined with the multi-wavelength ancillary data will allow for the robust characterization of the properties of dust in the nearby Universe, and the benchmarking of scaling relations between dust, gas, and global galaxy properties. In this paper we give an overview of the survey objectives and details about the sample selection and JCMT observations, present a consistent 30 band UV-to-FIR photometric catalog with derived properties, and introduce the JINGLE Main Data Release (MDR). Science highlights include the non-linearity of the relation between 850um luminosity and CO line luminosity, and the serendipitous discovery of candidate z>6 galaxies.

The First Data Release of the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey

The Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS) is a new wide-field legacy imaging survey in the northern Galactic cap using the 2.3m Bok telescope. The survey will cover about 5400 deg$^2$ in the $g$ and $r$ bands, and the expected 5$σ$ depths (corrected for the Galactic extinction) in the two bands are 24.0 and 23.4 mag, respectively. BASS started observations in January 2015, and has completed about 41% of the whole area as of July 2016. The first data release contains both calibrated images and photometric catalogs obtained in 2015 and 2016. The depths of single-epoch images in the two bands are 23.4 and 22.9 mag, and the full depths of three epochs are about 24.1 and 23.5 mag, respectively.

LEMONY--a Library of Empirical Medium-resolution spectra by Observations with the NAOC Xinglong 2.16\,m and YNAO Gaomeigu 2.4\,m telescopes

This study expands the coverage and improves the homogeneity of the distribution of MILES template stars in the parameter space, as well as extends the wavelength coverage of the template spectra to the far red beyond the Ca\,{\sc{ii}} triplet. To achieve this we have carried out a major observational campaign using the OMR long-slit spectrograph mounted on the NAOC 2.16\,m telescope and the YFOSC long-slit spectrograph mounted on the YNAO 2.4\,m telescope. The original sample is based on the MILES library, supplemented by 918 stars selected from PASTEL database. In total, 822 OMR and 1,324 YFOSC spectra, covering respectively the wavelength ranges $λλ$3800--5180 and $λλ$5150--9000, have been collected and reduced. The spectra have a mean resolution FWHM (full-width at half-maximum) of $\sim 3.3$\,Å and are wavelength- and flux-calibrated to an accuracy of $\sim 20$\,km\,s$^{-1}$ and $\sim 5$\,per\,cent, respectively. The spectra are further corrected for systematic errors in the wavelength calibration to an accuracy of $\sim 4$\,km\,s$^{-1}$ by cross-correlating with the theoretical spectra. Almost all the spectra have an average signal to noise ratio (SNR) better than 100 per pixel. Combined with the MILES spectra, there are now 1,731, 1,542, 1,324 and 1,273 stars with spectra covering respectively $λλ$3800--5180, $λλ$3800--7500, $λλ$5150--9000 and $λλ$3800--9000. This paper describes our template star selection, the observation and data reduction, and presents the reduced spectra collected hitherto.

Gas dynamics of a luminous $z$ = 6.13 quasar ULAS J1319$+$0950 revealed by ALMA high resolution observations

We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the dust continuum and [C II] 158 $μ$m fine structure line emission towards a far-infrared-luminous quasar, ULAS J131911.29$+$095051.4 at $z=6.13$, and combine the new Cycle 1 data with ALMA Cycle 0 data. The combined data have an angular resolution $\sim$ $0.3$, and resolve both the dust continuum and the [C II] line emission on few kpc scales. The [C II] line emission is more irregular than the dust continuum emission which suggests different distributions between the dust and [C II]-emitting gas. The combined data confirm the [C II] velocity gradient that we previously detected in lower resolution ALMA image from Cycle 0 data alone. We apply a tilted ring model to the [C II] velocity map to obtain a rotation curve, and constrain the circular velocity to be 427 $\pm$ 55 km s$^{-1}$ at a radius of 3.2 kpc with an inclination angle of 34$^\circ$. We measure the dynamical mass within the 3.2 kpc region to be 13.4$_{-5.3}^{+7.8}$ $\times 10^{10}\,M_{\odot}$. This yields a black hole and host galaxy mass ratio of 0.020$_{-0.007}^{+0.013}$, which is about 4$_{-2}^{+3}$ times higher than the present-day $M_{\rm BH}$/$M_{\rm bulge}$ ratio. This suggests that the supermassive black hole grows the bulk of its mass before the formation of the most of stellar mass in this quasar host galaxy in the early universe.
