New non-quadratic Euclidean complete affine maximal type hypersurfaces via Calabi affine geometry

The Bernstein problem for the affine maximal type equation \[ \sum_{i,j=1}^n f^{ij} w_{ij}=0,\qquad w\equiv \left[\det\left(\frac{\partial^2 f}{\partial x_i\partial x_j}\right)\right]^a,\quad x\in\Omega\subset\mathbb R^n, \] is a central problem in affine geometry. It originates from Chern's conjecture on entire locally convex graphs for the case $n=2$ and $a=-\frac{3}{4}$ in 1977. This conjecture was completely resolved by Trudinger and Wang in 2000, who moreover proposed a generalization to arbitrary dimension $n\ge2$ for $a=-\frac{n+1}{n+2}$ under the assumption of Euclidean completeness. Later, using real affine techniques, Li and Jia provided a new purely analytic proof of Chern's conjecture by establishing the Bernstein theorem for $n=2$ and $a\in(-\infty,-\frac{3}{4}]$. Despite considerable efforts over the past two decades, the higher-dimensional Chern's conjecture remains open. Recently, Du constructed explicit non-quadratic Euclidean complete solutions for $a\in[-\frac{n-1}{n},0)$. In this paper, from the perspective of submanifold theory and Calabi affine geometry, we investigate affine maximal type surfaces. It provides a geometric characterisation for Du's explicit Euclidean complete counterexamples---including Warren type, Trudinger-Wang type, and other solutions in dimension two. More importantly, we construct a new class of non-quadratic Euclidean complete affine maximal type hypersurfaces, which extends Du's parameter range, for all $n\ge 2$, to $a\in[-\frac{n}{n+1},\,0).$

Calabi affine maximal surfaces and centroaffine Bernstein problems

Motivated by Calabi's calculation of the second variation sign for locally strongly convex affine maximal surfaces in equiaffine geometry, we first prove that every Calabi extremal surface is also maximal in the Calabi affine geometry. By employing suitably chosen orthonormal frame fields and analyzing the corresponding Codazzi equations, we then obtain local classifications for certain special classes of Calabi affine maximal surfaces and hyperbolic centroaffine extremal surfaces. These examples inspire the construction of new, complete Calabi affine maximal surfaces and centroaffine extremal hypersurfaces. Notably, the complete centroaffine extremal hypersurfaces we establish answer all five centroaffine Bernstein problems posed by Li- Li-Simon in 2004.

A class of new complete affine maximal type hypersurfaces

In this paper we classify a kind of special Calabi hypersurfaces with negative constant sectional curvature in Calabi affine geometry. Meanwhile, we find a class of new Euclidean complete and Calabi complete affine hypersurfaces, which satisfy the affine maximal type equation and the Abreu equation with negative constant scalar curvatures.

Improving Generated and Retrieved Knowledge Combination Through Zero-shot Generation

Open-domain Question Answering (QA) has garnered substantial interest by combining the advantages of faithfully retrieved passages and relevant passages generated through Large Language Models (LLMs). However, there is a lack of definitive labels available to pair these sources of knowledge. In order to address this issue, we propose an unsupervised and simple framework called Bi-Reranking for Merging Generated and Retrieved Knowledge (BRMGR), which utilizes re-ranking methods for both retrieved passages and LLM-generated passages. We pair the two types of passages using two separate re-ranking methods and then combine them through greedy matching. We demonstrate that BRMGR is equivalent to employing a bipartite matching loss when assigning each retrieved passage with a corresponding LLM-generated passage. The application of our model yielded experimental results from three datasets, improving their performance by +1.7 and +1.6 on NQ and WebQ datasets, respectively, and obtaining comparable result on TriviaQA dataset when compared to competitive baselines.

Counting the number of solutions to certain infinite Diophantine equations

Let $r, v, n$ be positive integers. This paper investigate the number of solutions $s_{r,v}(n)$ of the following infinite Diophantine equations $$ n=1^{r}\cdot |k_{1}|^{v}+2^{r}\cdot |k_{2}|^{v}+3^{r}\cdot |k_{3}|^{v}+\ldots, $$ for ${\bf k}=(k_1,k_2,k_3,\dots)\in\mathbb{Z}^{\infty}$. For each $(r,v)\in\mathbb{N}\times\{1,2\}$, a generating function and some asymptotic formulas of $s_{r,v}(n)$ are established.

Crowdsourcing Information Extraction for Biomedical Systematic Reviews

Information extraction is a critical step in the practice of conducting biomedical systematic literature reviews. Extracted structured data can be aggregated via methods such as statistical meta-analysis. Typically highly trained domain experts extract data for systematic reviews. The high expense of conducting biomedical systematic reviews has motivated researchers to explore lower cost methods that achieve similar rigor without compromising quality. Crowdsourcing represents one such promising approach. In this work-in-progress study, we designed a crowdsourcing task for biomedical information extraction. We briefly report the iterative design process and the results of two pilot testings. We found that giving more concrete examples in the task instruction can help workers better understand the task, especially for concepts that are abstract and confusing. We found a few workers completed most of the work, and our payment level appeared more attractive to workers from low-income countries. In the future, we will further evaluate our results with reference to gold standard extractions, thus assessing the feasibility of tasking crowd workers with extracting biomedical intervention information for systematic reviews.
