Development of a compact cryogenic Penning trap with permanent magnets: An intermediate step toward the Shanghai Penning Trap

Penning traps, renowned for their unparalleled precision in determining fundamental properties such as mass and magnetic moments, are cornerstone instruments in modern physics. Their applications span from nuclear structure studies to stringent tests of quantum electrodynamics and CPT invariance. Although Penning traps have been demonstrated for fundamental studies, often employing superconducting magnets, their high cost and operational complexity remain challenges. In this work, we report the development of a compact cryogenic Penning trap that utilizes a permanent magnet to provide a confining magnetic field, offering a more economical and flexible alternative. We have successfully demonstrated all core functionalities of this system, including ion generation, transport, confinement, manipulation, and signal detection. This compact trap not only serves as a vital technical testbed for the development of the Shanghai Penning Trap, but also establishes a cryogenic Penning-trap experiment platform for ion trapping and cooling applications as well as envisaged spectroscopic studies applications.

Probing Nuclear Excitation by Electron Capture in an Electron Beam Ion Trap with Non-destructive Isomer Detection via Precision Mass Spectrometry

Nuclear excitation by electron capture (NEEC) is an important nuclear excitation mechanism which still lacks conclusive experimental verification. This is primarily attributed to strong background x-/$\gamma$-ray noise and competing nuclear excitation processes which would overshadow the signals in various environments that NEEC takes place. Here, we propose an experimental approach to observe the NEEC process within a background-free environment. Through collisions with a highly-compressed mono-energetic electron beam in an electron beam ion trap, nuclei may get excited to a long-lived isomeric state via the NEEC process. Subsequently, ions can be extracted and Penning-trap mass spectrometry employed to unambiguously detect the isomer. Our study focuses on the promising candidate $^{189}\mathrm{Os}$, demonstrating measurable detection rates of the NEEC process and discussing the feasibility of the proposed approach. This new approach for observing the NEEC process may be realized in the near future.

Suppression of Black-body Radiation Induced Zeeman Shifts in the Optical Clocks due to the Fine-structure Intramanifold Resonances

The roles of the fine-structure intramanifold resonances to the Zeeman shifts caused by the blackbody radiation (BBRz shifts) in the optical clock transitions are analyzed. The clock frequency measurement in the $^1S_0-^3P_0$ clock transition of the singly charged aluminium ion (Al$^+$) has already been reached the $10^{-19}$ level at which the BBRz effect can be significant in determining the uncertainty. In view of this, we probe first the BBRz shift in this transition rigorously and demonstrate the importance of the contributions from the intramanifold resonances explicitly. To carry out the analysis, we determine the dynamic magnetic dipole (M1) polarizabilities of the clock states over a wide range of angular frequencies by employing two variants of relativistic many-body methods. This showed the BBRz shift is highly suppressed due to blue-detuning of the BBR spectrum to the $^3P_0-^3P_1$ fine-structure intramanifold resonance in Al$^+$ and it fails to follow the usually assumed static M1 polarizability limit in the estimation of the BBRz shift. The resonance also leads to a reversal behavior of the temperature dependence and a cancellation in the shift. After learning this behavior, we extended our analyses to other optical clocks and found that these shifts are of the order of micro-hertz leading to fractional shifts in the clock transitions at the $10^{-20}$ level or below.

Experimental Access to Observing Decay from Extremely Long-Lived Metastable Electronic States via Penning Trap Spectrometry

Long-lived ionic quantum states known as metastable electronic states in highly-charged ions (HCIs) are of great interest in fundamental physics. Especially, it generates transitions with very narrow natural linewidth which is a promising candidate for use in the next generation HCI atomic clocks to reach an accuracy below $10^{-19}$. A recent experiment reported in [Nature,581(7806) 2020], used Penning trap mass spectrometry to measure the energy of an extremely long-lived metastable electronic state, thus opening doors to search for HCI clock transitions. Building upon prior research, this study introduces an experimental proposal with the goal of measuring lifetimes of the metastable states beyond seconds. Our approach employs a sequential pulse-and-phase measurement scheme, allowing for direct observations of the decay processes from metastable electronic states through single-ion mass spectrometry in a Penning trap. This measurement poses a significant challenge to conventional techniques like fluorescence detection. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this method, we conducted a comprehensive simulation under real experimental conditions, yielding promising results in a specific scenario. Two suitable candidates are proposed for testing this method, and the state-of-the-art MCDHF theory are employed for accurate energy levels and transition rate calculations. Some future prospects in the experimental determinations of a wide range of energy and lifetimes of long-lived metastable electronic states, probing hyperfine and magnetic quenching effects on high-order forbidden transitions and search for highly quality HCI clock transitions are discussed.

A New Clock Transition with the Highest Sensitivity to $\alpha$ Variation and Simultaneous Magic Trapping Conditions with Other Clock Transitions in Yb

Optical lattice clocks are the prospective devices that can probe many subtle physics including temporal variation of the fine structure constant ($\alpha_e$). These studies necessitate high-precision measurements of atomic clock frequency ratios to unprecedented accuracy. In contrast to the earlier claimed highest sensitive coefficient ($K$) clock transition to $\alpha_e$ in Yb [Phys. Rev. Lett. $\textbf{120}$, 173001 (2018)], we found the $4f^{14}6s6p\,(^3P_2) - 4f^{13}5d6s^{2}\,(^3P_2^*)$ transition of this atom can serve as the clock transition with the largest $K$ value (about $-$25(2)). Moreover, we demonstrate a scheme to attain simultaneous magic trapping conditions for this clock transition with the other two proposed clock transitions $4f^{14}6s^2\,(^1S_0) - 4f^{14}6s6p\,(^3P_2)$ and $4f^{14}6s^2\,(^1S_0) - 4f^{13}5d6s^{2}\,(^3P_2^*)$; also exhibiting large $K$ values. This magic condition can be realized by subjecting Yb atoms to a bias magnetic field at a particular polarization angle along the quantization axis in an experimental set up. Upon realization, it will serve as the most potential optical lattice clock to probe $\alpha_e$ variation.

Strong Modification of Radiative Transition Rates due to a Breit-Interaction-Induced Avoided Crossing

We present the observations of x-rays emitted from the $1s2s^{2}2p_{1/2}2p_{3/2}$ inner shell excited state of B-like W and Bi ions. The relative transition rates are obtained for two dominant radiative transitions to $1s^{2}2s^{2}2p_{1/2}$ and $1s^{2}2s^{2}2p_{3/2}$. The experimental results and the comparison with rigorous relativistic calculations show that the rates of the strong electric dipole allowed $1s^22s^22p$ -- $1s2s^22p^2$ transitions are strongly modified due to a drastic change in the wavefunction caused by the Breit interaction.

A low-energy compact Shanghai-Wuhan electron beam ion trap for extraction of highly charged ions

A low-energy, compact and superconducting electron beam ion trap (the Shanghai-Wuhan EBIT or SW-EBIT) for extraction of highly charged ions is presented. The magnetic field in the central drift tube of the SW-EBIT is approximately 0.21 T produced by a pair of high-temperature superconducting coils. The electron-beam energy of the SW-EBIT is in the range of 30-4000 eV, and the maximum electron-beam current is up to 9 mA. Acting as a source of highly charged ions, the ion-beam optics for extraction is integrated, including an ion extractor and an einzel lens. A Wien filter is then used to measure the charge-state distribution of the extracted ions. In this work, the tungsten ions below the charge state of 15 have been produced, extracted, and analyzed. The charge-state distributions and spectra in the range of 530-580 nm of tungsten ions have been measured simultaneously with the electron-beam energy of 279 eV and 300 eV, which preliminarily indicates that the 549.9 nm line comes from $W^{14+}$.

Tungsten spectroscopy in the EUV observed in SH-HtscEBIT

We have recorded extreme ultraviolet spectra from $\mathrm{W^{11+}}$ to $\mathrm{W^{15+}}$ ions using a new flat field spectrometer installed at the Shanghai high temperature superconducting electron beam ion trap. The spectra were recorded at beam energies ranging between 200 eV and 400 eV and showed spectral lines/transition arrays in the 170 - 260 Å region. The charge states and spectra transitions were identified by comparison with calculations using a detailed relativistic configuration interaction method and collisional-radiative model, both incorporated in the Flexible Atomic Code. Atomic structure calculations showed that the dominant emission arises from $5d$ $\rightarrow$ $5p$ and $5p$ $\rightarrow$ $5s$ transitions. The work also identified the ground-state configuration of $W^{13+}$ as $4f^{13}5s^2$ both theoretically and experimentally.

A Novel Method to Determine Magnetic Fields in low-density Plasma e.g. Solar Flares Facilitated Through Accidental Degeneracy of Quantum States in Fe$^{9+}$

We propose a new method to determine magnetic fields, by using the magnetic-field induced electric dipole transition $3p^43d\,^4\mathrm{D}_{7/2}$ $\rightarrow$ $3p^5\, ^2\mathrm{P}_{3/2}$ in Fe$^{9+}$ ions. This ion has a high abundance in astrophysical plasma and is therefore well-suited for direct measurements of even rather weak fields in e.g. solar flares. This transition is induced by an external magnetic field and its rate is proportional to the square of the magnetic field strength. We present theoretical values for what we will label the reduced rate and propose that the critical energy difference between the upper level in this transition and the close to degenerate $3p^43d\, ^4\mathrm{D}_{5/2}$ should be measured experimentally since it is required to determine the relative intensity of this magnetic line for different magnetic fields.

Hyperfine dependent $gf$-values of Mn I lines in the 1.49 $-$ 1.80 $μ$m H-band

The three Mn I lines at 17325, 17339 and 17349 Å~are among the 25 strongest lines ($\log(gf)>0.5$) in the H-band. They are all heavily broadened due to hyperfine structure and the profiles of these lines have so far not been understood. Earlier studies of these lines even suggested that they were blended. In this work, the profiles of these three infra-red (IR) lines have been studied theoretically and compared to experimental spectra to assist in the complete understanding of the solar spectrum in the IR. It is shown that the structure of these lines can not be described in the conventional way by the diagonal $A$ and $B$ hyperfine interaction constants. The off-diagonal hyperfine interaction not only has large impact on the energies of the hyperfine levels, but also introduces a large intensity redistribution among the hyperfine lines, changing the line profiles dramatically. By performing large-scale calculations of the diagonal and off-diagonal hyperfine interaction and $gf$-values between the upper and lower hyperfine levels and using a semi-empirical fitting procedure, agreement between our synthetic and experimental spectra was achieved. Furthermore, we compare our results with observations of stellar spectra. The spectra of the Sun and the K1.5 III red giant star Arcturus were modelled in the relevant region, $1.73-1.74$ $μ$m using our theoretically predicted $gf$-values and energies for each individual hyperfine line. Satisfactory fits were obtained and clear improvements were found using our new data compared with the old available Mn I data. A complete list of energies and $gf$-values for all the $3d^54s({^7S})4d$ e$^{6}$D $-$ $3d^54s({^7S})4f$ w$^{6}$F hyperfine lines are available as supplementary material online, whereas only the stronger lines are presented and discussed in detail in this paper.

Coronal lines and the importance of deep core-valence correlation in Ag-like ions

We report on large-scale and critically evaluated {\em ab initio} MCDHF calculations of the wavelength of the "coronal", M1 transition $4f\ ^2\mathrm{F}_{5/2}^o-^2\mathrm{F}_{7/2}^o$ in Ag-like ions. The transition between these two fine structure levels, which makes up the ground term for $Z \ge 62$ in the isoelectronic sequence, has recently been observed in Yb$^{23+}$ and W$^{27+}$, where the latter could be of great importance for fusion plasma diagnostics. We present recommended values for all members of the sequence between $Z = 50$ and $94$, which are supported by excellent agreement with values from recent experiments. The importance of including core-valence correlation with the $n=3$ shell in the theoretical model is emphasized. The results show close to spectroscopic accuracy for these forbidden lines.

The effect of an external magnetic field on the determination of E1M1 two-photon decay rates in Be-like ions

In this work we report on ab initio theoretical results for the magnetic field induced 2s2p ^3P_0 - 2s^2 ^1S_0 E1 transition for ions in the beryllium isoelectronic sequence between Z=5 and 92. It has been proposed that the rate of the E1M1 two-photon transition 2s2p ^3P_0 - 2s^2 ^1S_0 can be extracted from the lifetime of the ^3P_0 state in Be-like ions with zero nuclear spin by employing resonant recombination in a storage-ring. This experimental approach involves a perturbing external magnetic field. The effect of this field needs to be evaluated in order to properly extract the two-photon rate from the measured decay curves. The magnetic field induced transition rates are carefully evaluated and it is shown that, with a typical storage-ring field strength, it is dominant or of the same order as the E1M1 rate for low- and mid-Z ions. Results for several field strengths and ions are presented and we also give a simple Z-dependent formula for the rate. We estimate the uncertainties of our model to be within 5% for low- and mid-Z ions, and slightly larger for more highly charged ions. Furthermore we evaluate the importance of including both perturber states, ^3P_1 and ^1P_1, and it is shown that excluding the influence of the ^1P_1 perturber overestimates the rate by up to 26% for the mid-Z ions.

Theoretical investigations on magnetic field induced $2p^53s^3P_{0,2} - 2p^6^1S_0$ transitions in Ne-like ions without nuclear spin

We report theoretical results for magnetic field induced $2p^53s^3P_{0,2} - 2p^6^1S_0$ E1 transitions in Ne-like ions with zero nuclear spin (I=0) between Mg III and Zn XXI as well as in Ne I. We demonstrate that it is important to include both ``perturber'' states $2p^53s^1P_1$ and $2p^53s^3P_1$ in order to produce reliable transition rates. Furthermore, we investigate the trends of the rates along the isoelectronic sequence of the $2p^53s^3P_{0,2} - 2p^6^1S_0$ transitions and their competition with the $2p^53s^3P_0 - 2p^53s^3P_1$ M1 and the $2p^53s^3P_2 - 2p^6^1S_0$ M2 decays. For the $2p^53s^3P_0$ state the magnetic field induced transition becomes the dominant decay channel for the light elements even in a relatively weak magnetic field, and it will therefore prove useful in diagnostics of the strength of magnetic fields in different plasmas. The influence of an external magnetic field on the lifetime of the $2p^53s^3P_2$ state is much smaller but still observable for the ions near the neutral end of the sequence. As a special case, the magnetic field effect on the lifetimes of $2p^53s^3P_{0,2}$ states of neutral $^{20}$Ne is discussed. It is found that the lifetimes are drastically reduced by a magnetic field, which may be an underlying reason for the discrepancies in the lifetime of the $2p^53s^3P_2$ state between experiment (14.73(14) s) and theory (17.63 s).
