Adjusted Logistic Propensity Weighting Methods for Population Inference using Nonprobability Volunteer-Based Epidemiologic Cohorts

Many epidemiologic studies forgo probability sampling and turn to nonprobability volunteer-based samples because of cost, response burden, and invasiveness of biological samples. However, finite population inference is difficult to make from the nonprobability samples due to the lack of population representativeness. Aiming for making inferences at the population level using nonprobability samples, various inverse propensity score weighting (IPSW) methods have been studied with the propensity defined by the participation rate of population units in the nonprobability sample. In this paper, we propose an adjusted logistic propensity weighting (ALP) method to estimate the participation rates for nonprobability sample units. Compared to existing IPSW methods, the proposed ALP method is easy to implement by ready-to-use software while producing approximately unbiased estimators for population quantities regardless of the nonprobability sample rate. The efficiency of the ALP estimator can be further improved by scaling the survey sample weights in propensity estimation. Taylor linearization variance estimators are proposed for ALP estimators of finite population means that account for all sources of variability. The proposed ALP methods are evaluated numerically via simulation studies and empirically using the naïve unweighted National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III sample, while taking the 1997 National Health Interview Survey as the reference, to estimate the 15-year mortality rates.

Noisy Gradient Descent Converges to Flat Minima for Nonconvex Matrix Factorization

Numerous empirical evidences have corroborated the importance of noise in nonconvex optimization problems. The theory behind such empirical observations, however, is still largely unknown. This paper studies this fundamental problem through investigating the nonconvex rectangular matrix factorization problem, which has infinitely many global minima due to rotation and scaling invariance. Hence, gradient descent (GD) can converge to any optimum, depending on the initialization. In contrast, we show that a perturbed form of GD with an arbitrary initialization converges to a global optimum that is uniquely determined by the injected noise. Our result implies that the noise imposes implicit bias towards certain optima. Numerical experiments are provided to support our theory.

IFoodCloud: A Platform for Real-time Sentiment Analysis of Public Opinion about Food Safety in China

The Internet contains a wealth of public opinion on food safety, including views on food adulteration, food-borne diseases, agricultural pollution, irregular food distribution, and food production issues. In order to systematically collect and analyse public opinion on food safety, we developed IFoodCloud, a platform for the real-time sentiment analysis of public opinion on food safety in China. It collects data from more than 3,100 public sources that can be used to explore public opinion trends, public sentiment, and regional attention differences of food safety incidents. At the same time, we constructed a sentiment classification model using multiple lexicon-based and deep learning-based algorithms integrated with IFoodCloud that provide an unprecedented rapid means of understanding the public sentiment toward specific food safety incidents. Our best model's F1-score achieved 0.9737. Further, three real-world cases are presented to demonstrate the application and robustness. IFoodCloud could be considered a valuable tool for promote scientisation of food safety supervision and risk communication.

Estimates of the early EM emission from compact binary mergers

Compact binary mergers that involve at least one neutron star, either binary neutron star or black hole--neutron star coalescences, are thought to be the potential sources of electromagnetic emission due to the material ejected during the merger or those left outside the central object after the merger. Since the intensity of these electromagnetic transients decay rapidly with time, one should pay more attention to early emissions from such events, which are useful in revealing the nature of these mergers. In this work, we study the early emission of kilonovae, short $γ$-ray bursts and cocoons that could be produced in those mergers. We estimate their luminosities and time scales as functions of the chirp mass which is the most readily constrained parameter from the gravitational wave detections of these events. We focus on the range of chirp mass as $1.3M_{\odot} -2.7M_{\odot}$ which is compatible with one of the merging component being a so-called `mass gap' black hole. We show that the electromagnetic observation of these transients could be used to distinguish the types of the mergers when the detected chirp mass falls in the range of $1.5M_{\odot}-1.7M_{\odot}$. Applying our analysis to the sub-threshold GRB GBM-190816, we found that for this particular event the effective spin should be larger than 0.6 and the mass of the heavier object might be larger than 5.5$M_{\odot}$ for the SFHo equation of state.

Pursuing Sources of Heterogeneity in Modeling Clustered Population

Researchers often have to deal with heterogeneous population with mixed regression relationships, increasingly so in the era of data explosion. In such problems, when there are many candidate predictors, it is not only of interest to identify the predictors that are associated with the outcome, but also to distinguish the true sources of heterogeneity, i.e., to identify the predictors that have different effects among the clusters and thus are the true contributors to the formation of the clusters. We clarify the concepts of the source of heterogeneity that account for potential scale differences of the clusters and propose a regularized finite mixture effects regression to achieve heterogeneity pursuit and feature selection simultaneously. As the name suggests, the problem is formulated under an effects-model parameterization, in which the cluster labels are missing and the effect of each predictor on the outcome is decomposed to a common effect term and a set of cluster-specific terms. A constrained sparse estimation of these effects leads to the identification of both the variables with common effects and those with heterogeneous effects. We propose an efficient algorithm and show that our approach can achieve both estimation and selection consistency. Simulation studies further demonstrate the effectiveness of our method under various practical scenarios. Three applications are presented, namely, an imaging genetics study for linking genetic factors and brain neuroimaging traits in Alzheimer's disease, a public health study for exploring the association between suicide risk among adolescents and their school district characteristics, and a sport analytics study for understanding how the salary levels of baseball players are associated with their performance and contractual status.

Strain engineering of epitaxial oxide heterostructures beyond substrate limitations

The limitation of commercially available single-crystal substrates and the lack of continuous strain tunability preclude the ability to take full advantage of strain engineering for further exploring novel properties and exhaustively studying fundamental physics in complex oxides. Here we report an approach for imposing continuously tunable, large epitaxial strain in oxide heterostructures beyond substrate limitations by inserting an interface layer through tailoring its gradual strain relaxation. Taking BiFeO3 as a model system, we demonstrate that the introduction of an ultrathin interface layer allows the creation of a desired strain that can induce phase transition and stabilize a new metastable super-tetragonal phase as well as morphotropic phase boundaries overcoming substrate limitations. Furthermore, continuously tunable strain from tension to compression can be generated by precisely adjusting the thickness of the interface layer, leading to the first achievement of continuous O-R-T phase transition in BiFeO3 on a single substrate. This proposed route could be extended to other oxide heterostructures, providing a platform for creating exotic phases and emergent phenomena.

Dynamic list coloring of 1-planar graphs

A graph is $k$-planar if it can be drawn in the plane so that each edge is crossed at most $k$ times. Typically, the class of 1-planar graphs is among the most investigated graph families within the so-called "beyond planar graphs". A dynamic $\ell$-list coloring of a graph is a proper coloring so that each vertex receives a color from a list of $\ell$ distinct candidate colors assigned to it, and meanwhile, there are at least two colors appearing in the neighborhood of every vertex of degree at least two. In this paper, we prove that each 1-planar graph has a dynamic $11$-list coloring. Moreover, we show a relationship between the dynamic coloring of 1-planar graphs and the proper coloring of 2-planar graphs, which states that the dynamic (list) chromatic number of the class of 1-planar graphs is at least the (list) chromatic number of the class of 2-planar graphs.

Spatially correlated rotational dynamics reveals strain dependence in amorphous particle packings

Microstructural dynamics in amorphous particle packings is commonly probed by quantifying particle displacements. While rigidity in particle packings emerges when displacement of particles are hindered, it is not obvious how the typically disordered displacement metrics connect to mechanical response. Particle rotations, in contrast, are much less sensitive to confinement effects, while still sensitive to the mechanics of the packing. So far, little attention has been paid to connect microscopic rotational motion to mechanics of athermal amorphous packings. We demonstrate through experimental measurements that particle packing mechanics can be directly linked to the rotational motion of even round particles in a sheared packing. Our results show that the diffusive nature of rotational dynamics is highly strain sensitive. Additionally, there is substantial spatial correlation in rotation dynamics that is a function of the particle friction and packing density. Analysis of our measurements reveals that particle rotation dynamics plays an essential role in amorphous material mechanics.

Regularized Fingerprinting in Detection and Attribution of Climate Change with Weight Matrix Optimizing the Efficiency in Scaling Factor Estimation

The optimal fingerprinting method for detection and attribution of climate change is based on a multiple regression where each covariate has measurement error whose covariance matrix is the same as that of the regression error up to a known scale. Inferences about the regression coefficients are critical not only for making statements about detection and attribution but also for quantifying the uncertainty in important outcomes derived from detection and attribution analyses. When there is no errors-in-variables (EIV), the optimal weight matrix in estimating the regression coefficients is the precision matrix of the regression error which, in practice, is never known and has to be estimated from climate model simulations. We construct a weight matrix by inverting a nonlinear shrinkage estimate of the error covariance matrix that minimizes loss functions directly targeting the uncertainty of the resulting regression coefficient estimator. The resulting estimator of the regression coefficients is asymptotically optimal as the sample size of the climate model simulations and the matrix dimension go to infinity together with a limiting ratio. When EIVs are present, the estimator of the regression coefficients based on the proposed weight matrix is asymptotically more efficient than that based on the inverse of the existing linear shrinkage estimator of the error covariance matrix. The performance of the method is confirmed in finite sample simulation studies mimicking realistic situations in terms of the length of the confidence intervals and empirical coverage rates for the regression coefficients. An application to detection and attribution analyses of the mean temperature at different spatial scales illustrates the utility of the method.

SpotTune: Leveraging Transient Resources for Cost-efficient Hyper-parameter Tuning in the Public Cloud

Hyper-parameter tuning (HPT) is crucial for many machine learning (ML) algorithms. But due to the large searching space, HPT is usually time-consuming and resource-intensive. Nowadays, many researchers use public cloud resources to train machine learning models, convenient yet expensive. How to speed up the HPT process while at the same time reduce cost is very important for cloud ML users. In this paper, we propose SpotTune, an approach that exploits transient revocable resources in the public cloud with some tailored strategies to do HPT in a parallel and cost-efficient manner. Orchestrating the HPT process upon transient servers, SpotTune uses two main techniques, fine-grained cost-aware resource provisioning, and ML training trend predicting, to reduce the monetary cost and runtime of HPT processes. Our evaluations show that SpotTune can reduce the cost by up to 90% and achieve a 16.61x performance-cost rate improvement.

Efficient and Robust Propensity-Score-Based Methods for Population Inference using Epidemiologic Cohorts

Most epidemiologic cohorts are composed of volunteers who do not represent the general population. To enable population inference from cohorts, we and others have proposed utilizing probability survey samples as external references to develop a propensity score (PS) for membership in the cohort versus survey. Herein we develop a unified framework for PS-based weighting (such as inverse PS weighting (IPSW)) and matching methods (such as kernel-weighting (KW) method). We identify a fundamental Strong Exchangeability Assumption (SEA) underlying existing PS-based matching methods whose failure invalidates inference even if the PS-model is correctly specified. We relax the SEA to a Weak Exchangeability Assumption (WEA) for the matching method. Also, we propose IPSW.S and KW.S methods that reduce the variance of PS-based estimators by scaling the survey weights used in the PS estimation. We prove consistency of the IPSW.S and KW.S estimators of population means and prevalences under WEA, and provide asymptotic variances and consistent variance estimators. In simulations, the KW.S and IPSW.S estimators had smallest MSE. In our data example, the original KW estimates had large bias, whereas the KW.S estimates had the smallest MSE.

The 4-Adic Complexity of A Class of Quaternary Cyclotomic Sequences with Period 2p

In cryptography, we hope a sequence over $\mathbb{Z}_m$ with period $N$ having larger $m$-adic complexity. Compared with the binary case, the computation of 4-adic complexity of knowing quaternary sequences has not been well developed. In this paper, we determine the 4-adic complexity of the quaternary cyclotomic sequences with period 2$p$ defined in [6]. The main method we utilized is a quadratic Gauss sum $G_{p}$ valued in $\mathbb{Z}_{4^N-1}$ which can be seen as a version of classical quadratic Gauss sum. Our results show that the 4-adic complexity of this class of quaternary cyclotomic sequences reaches the maximum if $5\nmid p-2$ and close to the maximum otherwise.

It's All Relative: New Regression Paradigm for Microbiome Compositional Data

Microbiome data are complex in nature, involving high dimensionality, compositionally, zero inflation, and taxonomic hierarchy. Compositional data reside in a simplex that does not admit the standard Euclidean geometry. Most existing compositional regression methods rely on transformations that are inadequate or even inappropriate in modeling data with excessive zeros and taxonomic structure. We develop a novel relative-shift regression framework that directly uses compositions as predictors. The new framework provides a paradigm shift for compositional regression and offers a superior biological interpretation. New equi-sparsity and taxonomy-guided regularization methods and an efficient smoothing proximal gradient algorithm are developed to facilitate feature aggregation and dimension reduction in regression. As a result, the framework can automatically identify clinically relevant microbes even if they are important at different taxonomic levels. A unified finite-sample prediction error bound is developed for the proposed regularized estimators. We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed methods in extensive simulation studies. The application to a preterm infant study reveals novel insights of association between the gut microbiome and neurodevelopment.

Deep Learning-based End-to-end Diagnosis System for Avascular Necrosis of Femoral Head

As the first diagnostic imaging modality of avascular necrosis of the femoral head (AVNFH), accurately staging AVNFH from a plain radiograph is critical yet challenging for orthopedists. Thus, we propose a deep learning-based AVNFH diagnosis system (AVN-net). The proposed AVN-net reads plain radiographs of the pelvis, conducts diagnosis, and visualizes results automatically. Deep convolutional neural networks are trained to provide an end-to-end diagnosis solution, covering tasks of femoral head detection, exam-view identification, side classification, AVNFH diagnosis, and key clinical notes generation. AVN-net is able to obtain state-of-the-art testing AUC of 0.97 (95% CI: 0.97-0.98) in AVNFH detection and significantly greater F1 scores than less-to-moderately experienced orthopedists in all diagnostic tests (p<0.01). Furthermore, two real-world pilot studies were conducted for diagnosis support and education assistance, respectively, to assess the utility of AVN-net. The experimental results are promising. With the AVN-net diagnosis as a reference, the diagnostic accuracy and consistency of all orthopedists considerably improved while requiring only 1/4 of the time. Students self-studying the AVNFH diagnosis using AVN-net can learn better and faster than the control group. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first research on the prospective use of a deep learning-based diagnosis system for AVNFH by conducting two pilot studies representing real-world application scenarios. We have demonstrated that the proposed AVN-net achieves expert-level AVNFH diagnosis performance, provides efficient support in clinical decision-making, and effectively passes clinical experience to students.

Kähler-Einstein metrics and Ding functional on $\mathbb Q$-Fano group compactifications

Let $G$ be a complex, connect reductive Lie group which is the complexification of a compact Lie group $K$. Let $M$ be a $\mathbb Q$-Fano $G$-compactification. In this paper, we first prove the uniqueness of $K\times K$-invariant (singular) Kähler-Einstein metric. Then we show the existence of (singular) Kähler-Einstein metric implies properness of the reduced Ding functional. Finally, we show that the barycenter condition is also necessary of properness.

Probing the pathway of an ultrafast structural phase transition to illuminate the transition mechanism in Cu2S

Disentangling the primary order parameter from secondary order parameters in phase transitions is critical to the interpretation of the transition mechanisms in strongly correlated systems and quantum materials. Here we present a study of structural phase transition pathways in superionic Cu2S nanocrystals that exhibit intriguing properties. Utilizing ultrafast electron diffraction techniques sensitive in both momentum-space and the time-domain, we distinguish the dynamics of crystal symmetry breaking and lattice expansion in this system. We are able to follow the transient states along the transition pathway and so observe the dynamics of both the primary and secondary order parameters. Based on these observations we argue that the mechanism of the structural phase transition in Cu2S is dominated by the electron-phonon coupling. This mechanism advances the understanding from previous results where the focus was solely on dynamic observations of the lattice expansion.

Most Lithium-rich Low-mass Evolved Stars Revealed as Red Clump stars by Asteroseismology and Spectroscopy

Lithium has confused scientists for decades at almost each scale of the universe. Lithium-rich giants are peculiar stars with lithium abundances over model prediction. A large fraction of lithium-rich low-mass evolved stars are traditionally supposed to be red giant branch (RGB) stars. Recent studies, however, report that red clump (RC) stars are more frequent than RGB. Here, we present a uniquely large systematic study combining the direct asteroseismic analysis with the spectroscopy on the lithium-rich stars. The majority of lithium-rich stars are confirmed to be RCs, whereas RGBs are minor. We reveal that the distribution of lithium-rich RGBs steeply decline with the increasing lithium abundance, showing an upper limit around 2.6 dex, whereas the Li abundances of RCs extend to much higher values. We also find that the distributions of mass and nitrogen abundance are notably different between RC and RGB stars. These findings indicate that there is still unknown process that significantly affects surface chemical composition in low-mass stellar evolution.

Dipole coupling of a tunable hole double quantum dot in germanium hut wire to a microwave resonator

The germanium (Ge) hut wire system has strong spin-orbit coupling, a long coherence time due to a very large heavy-light hole splitting, and the advantage of site-controlled large-scale hut wire positioning. These properties make the Ge hut wire a promising candidate for the realization of strong coupling of spin to superconducting resonators and scalability for multiple qubit coupling. We have coupled a reflection line resonator to a hole double quantum dot (DQD) formed in Ge hut wire. The amplitude and phase responses of the microwave resonator revealed that the charge stability diagrams of the DQD are in good agreement with those obtained from transport measurements. The DQD interdot tunneling rate is shown to be tunable from 6.2 GHz to 8.5 GHz, which demonstrates the ability to adjust the frequency detuning between the qubit and the resonator. Furthermore, we achieved a hole-resonator coupling strength of up to 15 MHz, with a charge qubit decoherence rate of 0.28 GHz. Meanwhile the hole spin-resonator coupling rate was estimated to be 3 MHz. These results suggest that holes of a DQD in a Ge hut wire are dipole coupled to microwave photons, potentially enabling tunable hole spin-photon interactions in Ge with an inherent spin-orbit coupling.
