Constraints on long-range spin-gravity and monopole-dipole couplings of the proton

Results of a search for a long-range monopole-dipole coupling between the mass of the Earth and rubidium (Rb) nuclear spins are reported. The experiment simultaneously measures the spin precession frequencies of overlapping ensembles of $^{85}$Rb and $^{87}$Rb atoms contained within an evacuated, antirelaxation-coated vapor cell. The nuclear structure of the Rb isotopes makes the experiment particularly sensitive to spin-dependent interactions of the proton. The spin-dependent component of the gravitational energy of the proton in the Earth's field is found to be smaller than $3 \times 10^{-18}~{\rm eV}$, improving laboratory constraints on long-range monopole-dipole interactions by over three orders of magnitude.

The continuity equation with cusp singularities

In this paper we study a special case of the completion of cusp Kähler-Einstein metric on the regular part of varieties by taking the continuity method proposed by La Nave and Tian. The differential geometric and algebro-geometric properties of the noncollapsing limit in the continuity method with cusp singularities will be investigated.

Solving Multi-Objective MDP with Lexicographic Preference: An application to stochastic planning with multiple quantile objective

In most common settings of Markov Decision Process (MDP), an agent evaluate a policy based on expectation of (discounted) sum of rewards. However in many applications this criterion might not be suitable from two perspective: first, in risk aversion situation expectation of accumulated rewards is not robust enough, this is the case when distribution of accumulated reward is heavily skewed; another issue is that many applications naturally take several objective into consideration when evaluating a policy, for instance in autonomous driving an agent needs to balance speed and safety when choosing appropriate decision. In this paper, we consider evaluating a policy based on a sequence of quantiles it induces on a set of target states, our idea is to reformulate the original problem into a multi-objective MDP problem with lexicographic preference naturally defined. For computation of finding an optimal policy, we proposed an algorithm \textbf{FLMDP} that could solve general multi-objective MDP with lexicographic reward preference.

Electric Field Effect in Multilayer Cr2Ge2Te6: a Ferromagnetic Two-Dimensional Material

The emergence of two-dimensional (2D) materials has attracted a great deal of attention due to their fascinating physical properties and potential applications for future nanoelectronic devices. Since the first isolation of graphene, a Dirac material, a large family of new functional 2D materials have been discovered and characterized, including insulating 2D boron nitride, semiconducting 2D transition metal dichalcogenides and black phosphorus, and superconducting 2D bismuth strontium calcium copper oxide, molybdenum disulphide and niobium selenide, etc. Here, we report the identification of ferromagnetic thin flakes of Cr2Ge2Te6 (CGT) with thickness down to a few nanometers, which provides a very important piece to the van der Waals structures consisting of various 2D materials. We further demonstrate the giant modulation of the channel resistance of 2D CGT devices via electric field effect. Our results illustrate the gate voltage tunability of 2D CGT and the potential of CGT, a ferromagnetic 2D material, as a new functional quantum material for applications in future nanoelectronics and spintronics.

Applications of the $k$-$ω$ model in stellar evolutionary models

The $k$-$ω$ model for turbulence was first proposed by Kolmogorov (1942). A new $k$-$ω$ model for stellar convection was developed by Li (2012), which could reasonably describe turbulent convection not only in the convectively unstable zone but also in the overshooting regions. We have revised the $k$-$ω$ model by improving several model assumptions (including the macro-length of turbulence, convective heat flux, and turbulent mixing diffusivity, etc.), making it applicable for not only convective envelopes but also convective cores. Eight parameters are introduced in the revised $k$-$ω$ model. It should be noted that the Reynolds stress (turbulent pressure) is neglected in the equation of hydrostatic support. We have applied it into solar models and 5$M_{\odot}$ stellar models, in order to calibrate the eight model parameters, as well as to investigate the effects of the convective overshooting on the sun and intermediate mass stellar models.

Classification of certain qualitative properties of solutions for the quasilinear parabolic equations

In this paper, we mainly consider the initial boundary problem for a quasilinear parabolic equation \[ u_t-\mathrm{div}\left(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u\right)=-|u|^{β-1}u+α|u|^{q-2}u, \] where $p>1,β>0$, $q\geq1$ and $α>0$. By using Gagliardo-Nirenberg type inequality, energy method and comparison principle, the phenomena of blowup and extinction are classified completely in the different ranges of reaction exponents.

Baseband Equivalent Models and Digital Predistortion for Mitigating Dynamic Continuous-Time Perturbations in Phase-Amplitude Modulation-Demodulation Schemes (Expanded version)

We consider baseband equivalent representation of transmission circuits, in the form of a nonlinear dynamical system $\mathbf S$ in discrete time (DT) defined by a series interconnection of a phase-amplitude modulator, a nonlinear dynamical system $\mathbf F$ in continuous time (CT), and an ideal demodulator. We show that when $\mathbf F$ is a CT Volterra series model, the resulting $\mathbf S$ is a series interconnection of a DT Volterra series model of same degree and memory depth, and an LTI system with special properties. The result suggests a new, non-obvious, analytically motivated structure of digital pre-compensation of analog nonlinear distortions such as those caused by power amplifiers in digital communication systems. The baseband model and the corresponding digital compensation structure readily extend to OFDM modulation. MATLAB simulation is used to verify proposed baseband equivalent model and demonstrate effectiveness of the new compensation scheme, as compared to the standard Volterra series approach.

Nontrivial standing wave state in frequency-weighted Kuramoto model

Synchronization in a frequency-weighted Kuramoto model with a uniform frequency distribution is studied. We plot the bifurcation diagram and identify the asymptotic coherent states. Numerical simulations show that the system undergoes two first-order transitions in both the forward and backward directions. Apart from the trivial phase-locked state, a novel nonstationary coherent state, i.e., a nontrivial standing wave state is observed and characterized. In this state, oscillators inside the coherent clusters are not frequency-locked as they would be in the usual standing wave state. Instead, their average frequencies are locked to a constant. The critical coupling strength from the incoherent state to the nontrivial standing wave state can be obtained by performing linear stability analysis. The theoretical results are supported by the numerical simulations.

SAGA and Restricted Strong Convexity

SAGA is a fast incremental gradient method on the finite sum problem and its effectiveness has been tested on a vast of applications. In this paper, we analyze SAGA on a class of non-strongly convex and non-convex statistical problem such as Lasso, group Lasso, Logistic regression with $\ell_1$ regularization, linear regression with SCAD regularization and Correct Lasso. We prove that SAGA enjoys the linear convergence rate up to the statistical estimation accuracy, under the assumption of restricted strong convexity (RSC). It significantly extends the applicability of SAGA in convex and non-convex optimization.

Rotational splitting and asteroseismic modelling of the delta Scuti star EE Camelopardalis

According to the rotational splitting law of g modes, the frequency spectra of EE Cam can be disentangled only with oscillation modes of $\ell$ = 0, 1, and 2. Fifteen sets of rotational splits are found, containing five sets of $\ell=1$ multiplets and ten sets of $\ell=2$ multiplets. The rotational period of EE Cam is deduced to be $P_{\rm rot}$ = $1.84_{-0.05}^{+0.07}$ days. When we do model fittings, we use two nonradial oscillation modes ($f_{11}$ and $f_{32}$) and the fundamental radial mode $f_{1}$. The fitting results show that $χ^{2}$ of the best-fitting model is much smaller than those of other theoretical models. The physical parameters of the best-fitting model are $M$ = 2.04 $M_{\odot}$, $Z=0.028$, $T_{\rm eff}$ = 6433 K, $\log L/L_{\odot}$ = 1.416, $R$ = 4.12 $R_{\odot}$, $\log g$ = 3.518, and $χ^{2}$ = 0.00035. Furthermore, we find $f_{11}$ and $f_{32}$ are mixed mode, which mainly characterize the features of the helium core. The fundamental radial mode $f_{1}$ mainly restrict the features of the stellar envelope. Finally, the acoustic radius $τ_{0}$ and the period separation $Π_{0}$ are determined to be 5.80 hr and 463.7 s respectively, and the size of the helium core of EE Cam is estimated to be $M_{\rm He}$ = 0.181 $M_{\odot}$ and $R_{\rm He}$ = 0.0796 $R_{\odot}$.

Solid-to-super Critical Phase Change during Laser Internal Ablation

The mechanisms of phase change of argon during picosecond laser internal ablation are studied using molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that propagation of stress wave and fluctuation of temperature are periodical. The phase change process from solid to liquid to supercritical fluid then back to solid occurs as combined results of heating and the propagation of tensile stress wave induced by the laser pulse and the limited internal space.

Phase-controlled dual-comb coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopic imaging

Coherent Raman microscopy provide label-free imaging by interrogating the intrinsic vibration of biomolecules. Nevertheless, trade-off between high chemical-specificity and high imaging-speed currently exists in transition from spectroscopy to spectroscopic imaging when capturing dynamics in complex living systems. Here, we present a novel concept in dual-comb scheme to substantially beat this trade-off and facilitate high-resolution broadband coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopic imaging based on down-converted, automatically varying delay-time in spectral focusing excitation. A rapid measurement of vibrational microspectroscopy on sub-microsecond scale over a spectral span ~700 cm-1 with solid signal-to-noise ratio provides access to well-resolved molecular signatures within the fingerprint region. We demonstrate this high-performance spectroscopic imaging of spatially inhomogeneous distributions of chemical substances as well as the carotenoids accumulation in plant cells. This technique offers an unprecedented route for broadband CARS imaging with hundreds of kHz frame rate using available 1-GHz oscillators.

AE Ursae Majoris -- a $δ$ Scuti Star in the Hertzsprung Gap

We analyze the photometric data and spectroscopic data that collect on the $δ$ Scuti star AE UMa. The fundamental and the first overtone frequencies are confirmed as $f_{0} = 11.62560$\,c\,d$^{-1}$ and $f_{1} = 15.03124$\,c\,d$^{-1}$, respectively, from the frequency content by analyzing of the 40 nights light curve spanning from 2009 to 2012. Additionally, another 37 frequencies are identified as either the harmonics or the linear combinations of the fundamental and the first overtone frequencies, among which 25 are newly detected. The rate of period change of the fundamental mode is determined as $(1/P_{0})(dP_{0}/dt) = 5.4(\pm 1.9) \times 10^{-9}$\,yr$^{-1}$ as revealed from the $O-C$ diagram based on the 84 newly determined times of maximum light combined with those derived from the literature. The spectroscopic data suggests that AE UMa is a population\,I $δ$ Scuti star. With these physical properties, we perform theoretical explorations based on the stellar evolution code MESA on this target, considering that the variation of pulsation period is caused by secular evolutionary effects. We finally constraint the AE UMa with the physical parameters as: the mass of $1.805 \pm 0.055\ M_{\odot}$, the radius of $1.647 \pm 0.032 \times 10^{11}$\,cm, the luminosity of $1.381 \pm 0.048~(\log L/L_{\odot})$ and the age of $1.055 \pm 0.095 \times 10^{9}$\,yr. AE UMa can be the (Pop. I) $δ$ Scuti star that locates just after the second turn-off of its evolutional track leaving the main sequence, a star in the phase of the Hertzsprung Gap with a helium core and a hydrogen-burning shell.

K-energy on polarized compactifications of Lie groups

In this paper, we study Mabuchi's K-energy on a compactification M of a reductive Lie group G, which is a complexification of its maximal compact subgroup K. We give a criterion for the properness of K-energy on the space of K \times K-invariant Kahler potentials. In particular, it turns to give an alternative proof of Delcroix's theorem for the existence of Kahler-Einstein metrics in case of Fano manifolds M . We also study the existence of minimizers of K-energy for general Kahler classes of M.

Copula Modeling for Data with Ties

Copula modeling has gained much attention in many fields recently with the advantage of separating dependence structure from marginal distributions. In real data, however, serious ties are often present in one or multiple margins, which cause problems to many rank-based statistical methods developed under the assumption of continuous data with no ties. Simple methods such as breaking the ties at random or using average rank introduce independence into the data and, hence, lead to biased estimation. We propose an estimation method that treats the ranks of tied data as being interval censored and maximizes a pseudo-likelihood based on interval censored pseudo-observations. A parametric bootstrap procedure that preserves the observed tied ranks in the data is adapted to assess the estimation uncertainty and perform goodness-of-fit tests. The proposed approach is shown to be very competitive in comparison to the simple treatments in a large scale simulation study. Application to a bivariate insurance data illustrates the methodology.

Exploring the helium core of the delta Scuti star CoRoT 102749568 with asteroseismology

Based on regularities in rotational splittings, we seek possible multiplets for the observed frequencies of CoRoT 102749568. Twenty-one sets of multiplets are identified, including four sets of multiplets with $l=1$, nine sets of multiplets with $l=2$, and eight sets of multiplets with $l=3$. In particular, there are three complete triplets ($f_{10}$, $f_{12}$, $f_{14}$), ($f_{31}$, $f_{34}$, $f_{35}$), and ($f_{41}$, $f_{43}$, $f_{44}$). The rotational period of CoRoT 102749568 is estimated to be $1.34^{+0.04}_{-0.05}$ days. When doing model fittings, three $l=1$ modes ($f_{12}$, $f_{34}$, and $f_{43}$) and the radial first overtone $f_{13}$ are used. Our results shows that the three nonradial modes ($f_{12}$, $f_{34}$, and $f_{43}$) are mixed modes, which mainly provide constraints on the helium core. The radial first overtone $f_{13}$ mainly provides constraint on the stellar envelope. Hence the size of the helium core of CoRoT 102749568 is determined to be $M_{\rm He}$ = 0.148 $\pm$ 0.003 $M_{\odot}$ and $R_{\rm He}$ = 0.0581 $\pm$ 0.0007 $R_{\odot}$. The fundamental parameters of CoRoT 102749568 are determined to be $M$ = 1.54 $\pm$ 0.03 $M_{\odot}$, $Z=$ 0.006, $f_{\rm ov}$ = 0.004 $\pm$ 0.002, $\log g$ = 3.696 $\pm$ 0.003, $T_{\rm eff}$ = 6886 $\pm$ 70 K, $R$ = 2.916 $\pm$ 0.039 $R_{\odot}$, and $L$ = 17.12 $\pm$ 1.13 $L_{\odot}$.

High-efficiency generation of nanoscale single silicon vacancy defect array in silicon carbide

Color centers in silicon carbide have increasingly attracted attention in recent years owing to their excellent properties such as single photon emission, good photostability, and long spin coherence time even at room temperature. As compared to diamond which is widely used for holding Nitrogen-vacancy centers, SiC has the advantage in terms of large-scale, high-quality and low cost growth, as well as advanced fabrication technique in optoelectronics, leading to the prospects for large scale quantum engineering. In this paper, we report experimental demonstration of the generation of nanoscale $V_{Si}$ single defect array through ion implantation without the need of annealing. $V_{Si}$ defects are generated in pre-determined locations with resolution of tens of nanometers. This can help in integrating $V_{Si}$ defects with the photonic structures which, in turn, can improve the emission and collection efficiency of $V_{Si}$ defects when it is used in spin photonic quantum network. On the other hand, the defects are shallow and they are generated $\sim 40nm$ below the surface which can serve as critical resources in quantum sensing application.
