Role of Nuclear Quadrupole Coupling on Decoherence and Relaxation of Central Spins in Quantum Dots

Strain-induced gradients of local electric fields in semiconductor quantum dots can couple to the quadrupole moments of nuclear spins. We develop a theory describing the influence of this quadrupolar coupling (QC) on the spin correlators of electron and hole "central" spins localized in such dots. We show that when the QC strength is comparable to or larger than the hyperfine coupling strength between nuclei and the central spin, the relaxation rate of the central spin is strongly enhanced and can be exponential. We demonstrate a good agreement with recent experiments on spin relaxation in hole-doped (In,Ga)As self-assembled quantum dots.

Absolute gas refractometer without gas-filling and pumping process benefiting from quasi-synthetic wavelength theory

We present a method to measure the refractive index of gas at 633 nm absolutely, which does not need filling or pumping gas during the measurement. We develop a quasi-synthetic wavelength (QSW) theory by means of the configuration of two-frequency Jamin interferometry and vacuum tubes with specific lengths. With the aid of the QSW theory, we construct a gas refractometer and demonstrate its performance by the measurement of dry air and nitrogen gas at different pressures ranging from 80 kPa to 100 kPa. The results indicate that the refractometer has an uncertainty of better than 1E-7 and a dynamic range of 3.95E-4.

Higgs algebraic symmetry of screened system in a spherical geometry

The orbits and the dynamical symmetries for the screened Coulomb potentials and isotropic harmonic oscillators have been studied by Wu and Zeng [Z. B. Wu and J. Y. Zeng, Phys. Rev. A 62,032509 (2000)]. We find the similar properties in the responding systems in a spherical space, whose dynamical symmetries are described by Higgs Algebra. There exists a conserved aphelion and perihelion vector, which, together with angular momentum, constitute the generators of the geometrical symmetry group at the aphelia and perihelia points $(\dot{r}=0)$.

How Many CMEs Have Flux Ropes? Deciphering the Signatures of Shocks, Flux Ropes, and Prominences in Coronagraph Observations of CMEs

We intend to provide a comprehensive answer to the question on whether all Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) have flux rope structure. To achieve this, we present a synthesis of the LASCO CME observations over the last sixteen years, assisted by 3D MHD simulations of the breakout model, EUV and coronagraphic observations from STEREO and SDO, and statistics from a revised LASCO CME database. We argue that the bright loop often seen as the CME leading edge is the result of pileup at the boundary of the erupting flux rope irrespective of whether a cavity or, more generally, a 3-part CME can be identified. Based on our previous work on white light shock detection and supported by the MHD simulations, we identify a new type of morphology, the `two-front' morphology. It consists of a faint front followed by diffuse emission and the bright loop-like CME leading edge. We show that the faint front is caused by density compression at a wave (or possibly shock) front driven by the CME. We also present high-detailed multi-wavelength EUV observations that clarify the relative positioning of the prominence at the bottom of a coronal cavity with clear flux rope structure. Finally, we visually check the full LASCO CME database for flux rope structures. In the process, we classify the events into two clear flux rope classes (`3-part', `Loop'), jets and outflows (no clear structure). We find that at least 40% of the observed CMEs have clear flux rope structures. We propose a new definition for flux rope CMEs (FR-CMEs) as a coherent magnetic, twist-carrying coronal structure with angular width of at least 40 deg and able to reach beyond 10 Rsun which erupts on a time scale of a few minutes to several hours. We conclude that flux ropes are a common occurrence in CMEs and pose a challenge for future studies to identify CMEs that are clearly not FR-CMEs.

Edge-grafting theorems on permanents of the Laplacian matrices of graphs and their applications

The trees, respectively unicyclic graphs, on $n$ vertices with the smallest Laplacian permanent are studied. In this paper, by edge-grafting transformations, the $n$-vertex trees of given bipartition having the second and third smallest Laplacian permanent are identified. Similarly, the $n$-vertex bipartite unicyclic graphs of given bipartition having the first, second and third smallest Laplacian permanent are characterized. Consequently, the $n$-vertex bipartite unicyclic graphs with the first, second and third smallest Laplacian permanent are determined.

Optical measurements of spin noise as a high resolution spectroscopic tool

The intrinsic fluctuations of electron spins in semiconductors and atomic vapors generate a small, randomly-varying "spin noise" that can be detected by sensitive optical methods such as Faraday rotation. Recent studies have demonstrated that the frequency, linewidth, and lineshape of this spin noise directly reveals dynamical spin properties such as dephasing times, relaxation mechanisms and g-factors without perturbing the spins away from equilibrium. Here we demonstrate that spin noise measurements using wavelength-tunable probe light forms the basis of a powerful and novel spectroscopic tool to provide unique information that is fundamentally inaccessible via conventional linear optics. In particular, the wavelength dependence of the detected spin noise power can reveal homogeneous linewidths buried within inhomogeneously-broadened optical spectra, and can resolve overlapping optical transitions belonging to different spin systems. These new possibilities are explored both theoretically and via experiments on spin systems in opposite limits of inhomogeneous broadening (alkali atom vapors and semiconductor quantum dots).

Cavity QED treatment of scattering-induced efficient free-space excitation and collection in high-Q whispering-gallery microcavities

Whispering-gallery microcavity laser possesses ultralow threshold, whereas convenient free-space optical excitation and collection suffer from low efficiencies due to its rotational symmetry. Here we analytically study a three-dimensional microsphere coupled to a nano-sized scatterer in the framework of quantum optics. It is found that the scatterer is capable of coupling light in and out of the whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) without seriously degrading their high-Q properties, while the microsphere itself plays the role of a lens to focus the input beam on the scatterer and vice versa. Our analytical results show that (1) the high-Q WGMs can be excited in free space, and (2) over 50% of the microcavity laser emission can be collected within less than ${1}^{\circ}$. This coupling system holds great potential for low threshold microlasers free of external couplers.

Strongly enhanced light-matter interaction in a hybrid photonic-plasmonic resonator

We propose a hybrid photonic-plasmonic resonant structure which consists of a metal nanoparticle (MNP) and a whispering gallery mode (WGM) microcavity. It is found that the hybrid mode enables a strong interaction between the light and matter, and the single-atom cooperativity is enhanced by more than two orders of magnitude compared to that in a bare WGM microcavity. This remarkable improvement originates from two aspects: (1) the MNP offers a highly enhanced local field in the vicinity of an emitter, and (2), surprisingly, the high-\textit{Q} property of WGMs can be maintained in the presence of the MNP. Thus the present system has great advantages over a single microcavity or a single MNP, and holds great potential in quantum optics, nonlinear optics and highly sensitive biosening.

A k-omega model for stellar turbulent convection

Both observations and numerical simulations show that stellar convective motions are composed of semi-regular flows of convective rolling cells and the fully developed turbulence. Although the convective rolling cells are crucial for the properties of the stellar convection that transports heat and mixes materials in the stellar interior, their contributions have not been included in turbulent convection models proposed up to now. We simplify the structure of the convective rolling cells as a cellular pattern moving circle by circle with different angular velocities around the center, estimating their typical size by solving approximately for the temperature difference over the stationary temperature background and their average shear of velocity by evaluating approximately their kinetic energy transformed by themselves working as thermal engines from the heat involved in the convective rolling cells. We obtain a steady state solution in the fully local equilibrium which is similar to what is obtained in the standard mixing-length theory, by applying such model assumptions to the standard $k$-$\varepsilon$ model and properly choosing the model parameter $c_{\varepsilon 3}$. Accordingly, we propose a $k$-$ω$ model to include the transport effect of turbulence in stars. Preliminary results of their applications to the sun and other stars with different masses and in different evolutionary stages show good agreements with results of the standard mixing-length theory and results of numerical simulations for the stellar convection.

Demonstrating Additional Law of Relativistic Velocities based on Squeezed Light

Special relativity is foundation of many branches of modern physics, of which theoretical results are far beyond our daily experience and hard to realized in kinematic experiments. However, its outcomes could be demonstrated by making use of convenient substitute, i.e. squeezed light in present paper. Squeezed light is very important in the field of quantum optics and the corresponding transformation can be regarded as the coherent state of SU(1; 1). In this paper, the connection between the squeezed operator and Lorentz boost is built under certain conditions. Furthermore, the additional law of relativistic velocities and the angle of Wigner rotation are deduced as well.

Intrinsic spin fluctuations reveal the dynamical response function of holes coupled to nuclear spin baths in (In,Ga)As quantum dots

The problem of how single "central" spins interact with a nuclear spin bath is essential for understanding decoherence and relaxation in many quantum systems, yet is highly nontrivial owing to the many-body couplings involved. Different models yield widely varying timescales and dynamical responses (exponential, power-law, Gaussian, etc). Here we detect the small random fluctuations of central spins in thermal equilibrium (holes in singly-charged (In,Ga)As quantum dots) to reveal the timescales and functional form of bath-induced spin relaxation. This spin noise indicates long (400 ns) spin correlation times at zero magnetic field, that increase to $\sim$5 $μ$s as hole-nuclear coupling is suppressed with small (100 G) applied fields. Concomitantly, the noise lineshape evolves from Lorentzian to power-law, indicating a crossover from exponential to inverse-log dynamics.

A question of Sárkozy and Sós on representation functions] {A question of Sárkozy and Sós on representation functions

For $m\geq 1$, let $0 0$ be fixed positive integers. Assume there exists a prime $p$ and an integer $t>0$ such that $p^t\mid b_0$, but $p^t\nmid b_{i}\ {\rm for}\ 1\leq i\leq m$. Then, we prove that there is no infinite subset $\mathcal A$ of positive integers, such that the number of solutions of the following equation $$n=b_0(a_{0,1}+...+a_{0,e_0})+...+b_m(a_{m,1}+...+a_{m,r_m}),\ a_{i,j}\in \mathcal A$$ is constant for $n$ large enough. This result generalizes the recent result of Cilleruelo and Rué for bilinear case, and answers a question posed by Sárkozy and Sós.

Virial Theorem and Hypervirial Theorem in a spherical geometry

The Virial Theorem in the one- and two-dimensional spherical geometry are presented, in both classical and quantum mechanics. Choosing a special class of Hypervirial operators, the quantum Hypervirial relations in the spherical spaces are obtained. With the aid of the Hellmann-Feynman Theorem, these relations can be used to formulate a \emph{perturbation theorem without wave functions}, corresponding to the Hypervirial-Hellmann-Feynman Theorem perturbation theorem of Euclidean geometry. The one-dimensional harmonic oscillator and two-dimensional Coulomb system in the spherical spaces are given as two sample examples to illustrate the perturbation method.

Spin Transport and Relaxation in Graphene

We review our recent work on spin injection, transport and relaxation in graphene. The spin injection and transport in single layer graphene (SLG) were investigated using nonlocal magnetoresistance (MR) measurements. Spin injection was performed using either transparent contacts (Co/SLG) or tunneling contacts (Co/MgO/SLG). With tunneling contacts, the nonlocal MR was increased by a factor of ~1000 and the spin injection/detection efficiency was greatly enhanced from ~1% (transparent contacts) to ~30%. Spin relaxation was investigated on graphene spin valves using nonlocal Hanle measurements. For transparent contacts, the spin lifetime was in the range of 50-100 ps. The effects of surface chemical doping showed that for spin lifetimes on the order of 100 ps, impurity scattering (Au) was not the dominant mechanism for spin relaxation. While using tunneling contacts to suppress the contact-induced spin relaxation, we observed the spin lifetimes as long as 771 ps at room temperature, 1.2 ns at 4 K in SLG, and 6.2 ns at 20 K in bilayer graphene (BLG). Furthermore, contrasting spin relaxation behaviors were observed in SLG and BLG. We found that Elliot-Yafet spin relaxation dominated in SLG at low temperatures whereas Dyakonov-Perel spin relaxation dominated in BLG at low temperatures. Gate tunable spin transport was studied using the SLG property of gate tunable conductivity and incorporating different types of contacts (transparent and tunneling contacts). Consistent with theoretical predictions, the nonlocal MR was proportional to the SLG conductivity for transparent contacts and varied inversely with the SLG conductivity for tunneling contacts. Finally, bipolar spin transport in SLG was studied and an electron-hole asymmetry was observed for SLG spin valves with transparent contacts...

Broadband enhancement of light harvesting in luminescent solar concentrator

Luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) can absorb large-area incident sunlight, then emit luminescence with high quantum efficiency, which finally be collected by a small photovoltaic (PV) system. The light-harvesting area of the PV system is much smaller than that of the LSC system, potentially improving the efficiency and reducing the cost of solar cells. Here, based on Fermi-golden rule, we present a theoretical description of the luminescent process in nanoscale LSCs where the conventional ray-optics model is no longer applicable. As an example calculated with this new model, we demonstrate that a slot waveguide consisting of a nanometer-sized low-index slot region sandwiched by two high-index regions provides a broadband enhancement of light harvesting by the luminescent centers in the slot region. This is because the slot waveguide can (1) greatly enhance the spontaneous emission due to the Purcell effect, (2) dramatically increase the effective absorption cross-section of luminescent centers, and (3) strongly improve the quantum efficiency of luminescent centers. It is found that about 80% solar photons can be ultimately converted to waveguide-coupled luminescent photons even for a low luminescent quantum efficiency of 0.5. This LSC is potential to construct a tandem structure which can absorb nearly full-spectrum solar photons, and also may be of special interest for building integrated nano-PV applications.

Coupling of a Single Diamond Nanocrystal to a Whispering-Gallery Microcavity: Photon Transportation Benefitting from Rayleigh Scattering

We study the Rayleigh scattering induced by a diamond nanocrystal in a whispering-gallery-microcavity--waveguide coupling system, and find that it plays a significant role in the photon transportation. On one hand, this study provides a new insight into future solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics toward strong coupling physics. On the other hand, benefitting from this Rayleigh scattering, novel photon transportation such as dipole induced transparency and strong photon antibunching can occur simultaneously. As potential applications, this system can function as high-efficiency photon turnstiles. In contrast to [B. Dayan \textit{et al.}, \textrm{Science} \textbf{319},1062 (2008)], the photon turnstiles proposed here are highly immune to nanocrystal's azimuthal position.
