State-independent Nonadiabatic Geometric Quantum Gates

Quantum computation has demonstrated advantages over classical computation for special hard problems, where a set of universal quantum gates is essential. Geometric phases, which have built-in resilience to local noise, have been used to construct quantum gates with excellent performance. However, this advantage has been smeared in previous schemes. Here, we propose a state-independent nonadiabatic geometric quantum-gate scheme that is able to realize a more fully geometric gate than previous approaches, allowing for the cancelation of dynamical phases accumulated by an arbitrary state. Numerical simulations demonstrate that our scheme has significantly stronger gate robustness than the previous geometric and dynamical ones. Meanwhile, we give a detailed physical implementation of our scheme with the Rydberg atom system based on the Rydberg blockade effect, specifically for multiqubit control-phase gates, which exceeds the fault-tolerance threshold of multiqubit quantum gates within the considered error range. Therefore, our scheme provides a promising way for fault-tolerant quantum computation in atomic systems.

Ferroelectric Antiferromagnetic Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulator in TwoDimensional van der Waals Materials

Ferroelectricity, anti-ferromagnetism (AFM) and quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) are three fundamental phenomena in the field of condensed matter physics, which could enable the realization of novel devices and thus attracts great attention. Here, we show theoretical evidence that twodimensional (2D) even-layer MnBi2Te4 allows for the simultaneous presence of intercorrelated ferroelectricity, AFM, and QAHE. Importantly, through rational van der Waals sliding, these exotic properties are strongly coupled. Such coupling could demonstrate many distinctive physics, for example, ferroelectric control of itinerant AFM phase and the sign of quantized anomalous Hall plateau. The explored phenomena and mechanism would not only enrich the research in 2D ferroelectricity and topological magnets, but also guide the design of low-consumption high-speed quantum devices.

Autoencoding Galaxy Spectra II: Redshift Invariance and Outlier Detection

We present an unsupervised outlier detection method for galaxy spectra based on the spectrum autoencoder architecture spender, which reliably captures spectral features and provides highly realistic reconstructions for SDSS galaxy spectra. We interpret the sample density in the autoencoder latent space as a probability distribution, and identify outliers as low-probability objects with a normalizing flow. However, we found that the latent-space position is not, as expected from the architecture, redshift invariant, which introduces stochasticity into the latent space and the outlier detection method. We solve this problem by adding two novel loss terms during training, which explicitly link latent-space distances to data-space distances, preserving locality in the autoencoding process. Minimizing the additional losses leads to a redshift-invariant, non-degenerate latent space distribution with clear separations between common and anomalous data. We inspect the spectra with the lowest probability and find them to include blends with foreground stars, extremely reddened galaxies, galaxy pairs and triples, and stars that are misclassified as galaxies. We release the newly trained spender model and the latent-space probability for the entire SDSS-I galaxy sample to aid further investigations.

Autoencoding Galaxy Spectra I: Architecture

We introduce the neural network architecture SPENDER as a core differentiable building block for analyzing, representing, and creating galaxy spectra. It combines a convolutional encoder, which pays attention to up to 256 spectral features and compresses them into a low-dimensional latent space, with a decoder that generates a restframe representation, whose spectral range and resolution exceeds that of the observing instrument. The decoder is followed by explicit redshift, resampling, and convolution transformations to match the observations. The architecture takes galaxy spectra at arbitrary redshifts and is robust to glitches like residuals of the skyline subtraction, so that spectra from a large survey can be ingested directly without additional preprocessing. We demonstrate the performance of SPENDER by training on the entire spectroscopic galaxy sample of SDSS-II; show its ability to create highly accurate reconstructions with substantially reduced noise; perform deconvolution and oversampling for a super-resolution model that resolves the [OII] doublet; introduce a novel method to interpret attention weights as proxies for important spectral features; and infer the main degrees of freedom represented in the latent space. We conclude with a discussion of future improvements and applications.

Nonadiabatic Holonomic Quantum Computation via Path Optimization

Nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation (NHQC) is implemented by fast evolution processes in a geometric way to withstand local noises. However, recent works of implementing NHQC are sensitive to the systematic noise and error. Here, we present a path-optimized NHQC (PONHQC) scheme based on the non-Abelian geometric phase, and find that a geometric gate can be constructed by different evolution paths, which have different responses to systematic noises. Due to the flexibility of the PONHQC scheme, we can choose an optimized path that can lead to excellent gate performance. Numerical simulation shows that our optimized scheme can greatly outperform the conventional NHQC scheme, in terms of both fidelity and robustness of the gates. In addition, we propose to implement our strategy on superconducting quantum circuits with decoherence-free subspace encoding with the experiment-friendly two-body exchange interaction. Therefore, we present a flexible NHQC scheme that is promising for the future robust quantum computation.

Distributed Extended Object Tracking Information Filter Over Sensor Networks

This work aims to design a distributed extended object tracking (EOT) system over a realistic network, where both the extent and kinematics are required to retain consensus within the entire network. To this end, we resort to the multiplicative error model (MEM) that allows the extent parameters of perpendicular axis-symmetric objects to have individual uncertainty. To incorporate the MEM into the information filter (IF) style, we use the moment-matching technique to derive two pair linear models with only additive noise. The separation is merely in a fashion, and the cross-correlation between states is preserved as parameters in each other's model. As a result, the closed-form expressions are transferred into an alternating iteration of two linear IFs. With the two models, a centralized IF is proposed wherein the measurements are converted into a summation of innovation parts. Later, under a sensor network with the communication nodes and sensor nodes, we present two distributed IFs through the consensus on information and consensus on measurement schemes, respectively. Moreover, we prove the estimation errors of the proposed filter are exponentially bounded in the mean square. The benefits are testified by numerical experiments in comparison to state-of-the-art filters in literature.

Composite Short-path Nonadiabatic Holonomic Quantum Gates

Nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation (NHQC) has attracted significant attention due to its fast evolution and the geometric nature induced resilience to local noises. However, its long operation time and complex physical implementation make it hard to surpass the dynamical scheme, and thus hindering its wide application. Here, we present to implement NHQC with the shortest path under some conditions, through the inverse Hamiltonian engineering technique, which posseses higher fidelity and stronger robustness than previous NHQC schemes. Meanwhile, the gate performance in our scheme can be further improved by using the proposed composite dynamical decoupling pulses, which can efficiently improve both the gate fidelity and robustness, making our scheme outperform the optimal dynamical scheme in certain parameters range. Remarkably, our scheme can be readily implemented with Rydberg atoms, and a simplified implementation of the controlled-not gate in the Rydberg blockade regime can be achieved. Therefore, our scheme represents a promising progress towards future fault-tolerant quantum computation in atomic systems.

DI Herculis Revisited: Starspots, Gravity Darkening, and 3-D Obliquities

DI Herculis is an eclipsing binary famous for a longstanding disagreement between theory and observation of the apsidal precession rate, which was resolved when both stars were found to be severely misaligned with the orbit. We used data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) to refine our knowledge of the stellar obliquities and sharpen the comparison between the observed and theoretical precession rates. The TESS data show variations with a 1.07-day period, which we interpret as rotational modulation from starspots on the primary star. This interpretation is supported by the detection of photometric anomalies during primary eclipses consistent with starspot crossings. The secondary eclipse light curve shows a repeatable asymmetry which we interpret as an effect of gravity darkening. By combining the TESS data with previously obtained data, we determined the three-dimensional spin directions of both stars. Using this information, the updated value of the theoretical apsidal precession rate (including the effects of tides, rotation, and general relativity) is $1.35^{+0.58}_{-0.50}$ arcsec/cycle. The updated value of the observed rate (after including new TESS eclipse times) is $1.41^{+0.39}_{-0.28}$ arcsec/cycle. Given the agreement between the observed and theoretical values, we fitted all the relevant data simultaneously assuming the theory is correct. This allowed us to place tighter constraints on the stellar obliquities, which are $75^{+3}_{-3}$ and $80^{+3}_{-3}$ degrees for the primary and secondary stars, respectively.

Nonadiabatic geometric quantum computation with shortened path on superconducting circuits

Recently, nonadiabatic geometric quantum computation has been received much attention, due to its fast manipulation and intrinsic error-resilience characteristics. However, to obtain universal geometric quantum control, only limited and special evolution paths have been proposed, which usually requires longer gate-time and more operational steps, and thus leads to lower quality of the implemented quantum gates. Here, we present an effective scheme to find the shortest geometric path under the conventional conditions of geometric quantum computation, where high-fidelity and robust geometric gates can be realized by only single-loop evolution, and the gate performances are better than the corresponding dynamical ones. Furthermore, we can optimize the pulse shapes in our scheme to further shorten the gate-time, determined by how fast the path is travelled. In addition, we also present its physical implementation on superconducting circuits, consisting of capacitively coupled transmon qubits, where the fidelities of geometric single- and two-qubit gates can be higher than $99.95\%$ and $99.80\%$ within the current state-of-the-art experimental technologies, respectively. These results indicate that our scheme is promising for large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Magnetoelastic Coupling in Hole-doped Two-dimensional \b{eta}-PbO

The realization of intertwined ferroelasticity and ferromagnetism in two-dimensional (2D) lattices is of great interest for broad nanoscale applications, but still remains a remarkable challenge. Here, we propose an alternative approach to realize the strongly coupled ferromagnetism and ferroelasticity by carrier doping. We demonstrate that prototypical 2D \b{eta}-PbO is dynamically, thermally and mechanically stable. Under hole doping, 2D \b{eta}-PbO possesses ferromagnetism and ferroelasticity simultaneously. Moreover, the robustness of ferromagnetic and ferroelastic orders are doping tunable. In particular, 2D \b{eta}-PbO features in-plane easy magnetization axis that is coupled with lattice direction, enabling ferroelastic manipulation of spin direction. Our work highlights a new direction for 2D magnetoelastic research and enables the possibility for multifunctional devices.

PAM: Understanding Product Images in Cross Product Category Attribute Extraction

Understanding product attributes plays an important role in improving online shopping experience for customers and serves as an integral part for constructing a product knowledge graph. Most existing methods focus on attribute extraction from text description or utilize visual information from product images such as shape and color. Compared to the inputs considered in prior works, a product image in fact contains more information, represented by a rich mixture of words and visual clues with a layout carefully designed to impress customers. This work proposes a more inclusive framework that fully utilizes these different modalities for attribute extraction. Inspired by recent works in visual question answering, we use a transformer based sequence to sequence model to fuse representations of product text, Optical Character Recognition (OCR) tokens and visual objects detected in the product image. The framework is further extended with the capability to extract attribute value across multiple product categories with a single model, by training the decoder to predict both product category and attribute value and conditioning its output on product category. The model provides a unified attribute extraction solution desirable at an e-commerce platform that offers numerous product categories with a diverse body of product attributes. We evaluated the model on two product attributes, one with many possible values and one with a small set of possible values, over 14 product categories and found the model could achieve 15% gain on the Recall and 10% gain on the F1 score compared to existing methods using text-only features.

AdaTag: Multi-Attribute Value Extraction from Product Profiles with Adaptive Decoding

Automatic extraction of product attribute values is an important enabling technology in e-Commerce platforms. This task is usually modeled using sequence labeling architectures, with several extensions to handle multi-attribute extraction. One line of previous work constructs attribute-specific models, through separate decoders or entirely separate models. However, this approach constrains knowledge sharing across different attributes. Other contributions use a single multi-attribute model, with different techniques to embed attribute information. But sharing the entire network parameters across all attributes can limit the model's capacity to capture attribute-specific characteristics. In this paper we present AdaTag, which uses adaptive decoding to handle extraction. We parameterize the decoder with pretrained attribute embeddings, through a hypernetwork and a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) module. This allows for separate, but semantically correlated, decoders to be generated on the fly for different attributes. This approach facilitates knowledge sharing, while maintaining the specificity of each attribute. Our experiments on a real-world e-Commerce dataset show marked improvements over previous methods.

Manipulating Hubbard-type Coulomb blockade effect of metallic wires embedded in an insulator

Correlated states emerge in low-dimensional systems owing to enhanced Coulomb interactions. Elucidating these states requires atomic scale characterization and delicate control capabilities. In this study, spectroscopic imaging-scanning tunneling microscopy was employed to investigate the correlated states residing in the one-dimensional electrons of the monolayer and bilayer MoSe2 mirror twin boundary (MTB). The Coulomb energies, determined by the wire length, drive the MTB into two types of ground states with distinct respective out-of-phase and in-phase charge orders. The two ground states can be reversibly converted through a metastable zero-energy state with in situ voltage pulses, which tunes the electron filling of the MTB via a polaronic process, as substantiated by first-principles calculations. Our modified Hubbard model reveals the ground states as correlated insulators from an on-site U-originated Coulomb interaction, dubbed Hubbard-type Coulomb blockade effect. Our work sets a foundation for understanding correlated physics in complex systems and for tailoring quantum states for nano-electronics applications.

Universal co-existence of photovoltaics and ferroelectricity from two-dimensional 3R bilayer BX (X=P, As, Sb)

The intertwined ferroelectricity and photovoltaics in two-dimensional (2D) materials will enable the favorable improvement and control of photovoltaic preformances. In this paper, we take 2D 3R bilayer BX (X=P, As, Sb) as model systems to study the photovoltaic characteristics of intrinsic 2D out-of-plane (OOP) ferroelectric material, and try to explore a strategy to regulate the photoelectric properties by changing the strength of ferroelectric polarization. Due to the spatial inversion symmetry broken caused by special 3R stacking, spontaneous OOP ferroelectric polarization will appear in the 3R bilayer BX, which can be swichable through a specific interlayer sliding. The OOP ferroelectricity leads to charge transfer between layers, realizes efficient spatial separation between holes and electrons, and forms the characteristics of type-II band alignment. Moreover, due to perfect lattice match on account of two identical layers, the 3R bilayer BX is more stable and easy to realize in experiments than most of traditional 2D heterostructures made up of different materials. The 3R bilayer BX shows moderate band gap, ultra-high carrier mobility and efficient optical absorption, and its nano-devices present large photocurrent, high photon responsivity and excellent external quantum efficiency. More importantly, all these photoelectric parameters depend on the intrinsic OOP ferroelectric strength. By changing the interlayer distance of bilayer BX, the ferroelectric polarization can be regulated effectively to achieve the optimal photoelectric performance. Finally, we emphasize the importance and universality of spatial inversion symmetry broken in layered materials beyond the 3R bilayer BX to realize the co-regulation of ferroelectric and photovoltaics.

Distributed Weighted Least Squares Estimator Based on ADMM

Wireless sensor network has recently received much attention due to its broad applicability and ease-of-installation. This paper is concerned with a distributed state estimation problem, where all sensor nodes are required to achieve a consensus estimation. The weighted least squares (WLS) estimator is an appealing way to handle this problem since it does not need any prior distribution information. To this end, we first exploit the equivalent relation between the information filter and WLS estimator. Then, we establish an optimization problem under the relation coupled with a consensus constraint. Finally, the consensus-based distributed WLS problem is tackled by the alternating direction method of multiplier (ADMM). Numerical simulation together with theoretical analysis testify the convergence and consensus estimations between nodes.

Intertwined Ferroelectricity and Topological State in Two-Dimensional Multilayer

The intertwined ferroelectricity and band topology will enable the non-volatile control of the topological states, which is of importance for nanoelectrics with low energy costing and high response speed. Nonetheless, the principle to design the novel system is unclear and the feasible approach to achieve the coexistence of two parameter orders is absent. Here, we propose a general paradigm to design 2D ferroelectric topological insulators by sliding topological multilayers on the basis of first-principles calculations. Taking trilayer Bi2Te3 as a model system, we show that in the van der Waals multilayer based 2D topological insulators, the in-plane and out-of-plane ferroelectricity can be induced through a specific interlayer sliding, to enable the coexistence of ferroelectric and topological orders. The strong coupling of the order parameters renders the topological states sensitive to polarization flip, realizing non-volatile ferroelectric control of topological properties. The revealed design-guideline and ferroelectric-topological coupling not only are useful for the fundamental research of the coupled ferroelectric and topological physics in 2D lattices, but also enable novel applications in nanodevices.

Kinetic Energy Distribution of Fragments for Thermal Neutron-Induced $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu Fission Reactions

Focused on the generation and evolution of vast complementary pairs of the primary fission fragments at scission moment, Dinuclear and Statistical Model (DSM) is proposed. (1) It is assumed that the fissile nucleus elongates along a symmetric coaxis until it breaks into two primary fission fragments. (2) Every complementary pair of the primary fission fragments is approximatively described as two ellipsoids with large deformation at scission moment. (3) The kinetic energy in every complementary pair of the primary fragments is mainly provided by Coulomb repulsion, which is explicitly expressed through strict six-dimensional integrals. (4) Only three phenomenological coefficients are obtained to globally describe the quadrupole deformation parameters of arbitrary primary fragments both for $^{235}$U($n_{th}, f$) and $^{239}$Pu($n_{th}, f$) reactions, on the basis of the common characteristics of the measured data, such as mass and charge distributions, kinetic energy distributions. In the framework of DSM, the explicit average total kinetic energy distribution $\overline{TKE}(A)$ and the average kinetic energy distribution $\overline{KE}(A)$ are consistently represented. The theoretical results in this paper agree well with the experimental data. Furthermore, this model is expected as the reliable approach to generally evaluate the corresponding observebles for thermal neutron-induced fission of actinides.

Intercorrelated ferroelectrics in 2D van der Waals materials

2D intercorrelated ferroelectrics, exhibiting a coupled in-plane and out-of-plane ferroelectricity, is a fundamental phenomenon in the field of condensed-mater physics. The current research is based on the paradigm of bi-directional inversion asymmetry in single-layers, which restricts 2D intercorrelated ferroelectrics to extremely few systems. Herein, we propose a new scheme for achieving 2D intercorrelated ferroelectrics using van der Waals (vdW) interaction, and apply this scheme to a vast family of 2D vdW materials. Using first-principles, we demonstrate that 2D vdW multilayers-for example, BN, MoS2, InSe, CdS, PtSe2, TI2O, SnS2, Ti2CO2 etc.- can exhibit coupled in-plane and out-of-plane ferroelectricity, thus yielding 2D intercorrelated ferroelectricsferroelectric physics. We further predict that such intercorrelated ferroelectrics could demonstrate many distinct properties, for example, electrical full control of spin textures in trilayer PtSe2 and electrical permanent control of valley-contrasting physics in four-layer VS2. Our finding opens a new direction for 2D intercorrelated ferroelectric research.
