A New Task: Deriving Semantic Class Targets for the Physical Sciences

We define deriving semantic class targets as a novel multi-modal task. By doing so, we aim to improve classification schemes in the physical sciences which can be severely abstracted and obfuscating. We address this task for upcoming radio astronomy surveys and present the derived semantic radio galaxy morphology class targets.

Artifact-Tolerant Clustering-Guided Contrastive Embedding Learning for Ophthalmic Images

Ophthalmic images and derivatives such as the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness map are crucial for detecting and monitoring ophthalmic diseases (e.g., glaucoma). For computer-aided diagnosis of eye diseases, the key technique is to automatically extract meaningful features from ophthalmic images that can reveal the biomarkers (e.g., RNFL thinning patterns) linked to functional vision loss. However, representation learning from ophthalmic images that links structural retinal damage with human vision loss is non-trivial mostly due to large anatomical variations between patients. The task becomes even more challenging in the presence of image artifacts, which are common due to issues with image acquisition and automated segmentation. In this paper, we propose an artifact-tolerant unsupervised learning framework termed EyeLearn for learning representations of ophthalmic images. EyeLearn has an artifact correction module to learn representations that can best predict artifact-free ophthalmic images. In addition, EyeLearn adopts a clustering-guided contrastive learning strategy to explicitly capture the intra- and inter-image affinities. During training, images are dynamically organized in clusters to form contrastive samples in which images in the same or different clusters are encouraged to learn similar or dissimilar representations, respectively. To evaluate EyeLearn, we use the learned representations for visual field prediction and glaucoma detection using a real-world ophthalmic image dataset of glaucoma patients. Extensive experiments and comparisons with state-of-the-art methods verified the effectiveness of EyeLearn for learning optimal feature representations from ophthalmic images.

CTL-MTNet: A Novel CapsNet and Transfer Learning-Based Mixed Task Net for the Single-Corpus and Cross-Corpus Speech Emotion Recognition

Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) has become a growing focus of research in human-computer interaction. An essential challenge in SER is to extract common attributes from different speakers or languages, especially when a specific source corpus has to be trained to recognize the unknown data coming from another speech corpus. To address this challenge, a Capsule Network (CapsNet) and Transfer Learning based Mixed Task Net (CTLMTNet) are proposed to deal with both the singlecorpus and cross-corpus SER tasks simultaneously in this paper. For the single-corpus task, the combination of Convolution-Pooling and Attention CapsNet module CPAC) is designed by embedding the self-attention mechanism to the CapsNet, guiding the module to focus on the important features that can be fed into different capsules. The extracted high-level features by CPAC provide sufficient discriminative ability. Furthermore, to handle the cross-corpus task, CTL-MTNet employs a Corpus Adaptation Adversarial Module (CAAM) by combining CPAC with Margin Disparity Discrepancy (MDD), which can learn the domain-invariant emotion representations through extracting the strong emotion commonness. Experiments including ablation studies and visualizations on both singleand cross-corpus tasks using four well-known SER datasets in different languages are conducted for performance evaluation and comparison. The results indicate that in both tasks the CTL-MTNet showed better performance in all cases compared to a number of state-of-the-art methods. Swin-Pose: Swin Transformer Based Human Pose Estimation

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been widely utilized in many computer vision tasks. However, CNNs have a fixed reception field and lack the ability of long-range perception, which is crucial to human pose estimation. Due to its capability to capture long-range dependencies between pixels, transformer architecture has been adopted to computer vision applications recently and is proven to be a highly effective architecture. We are interested in exploring its capability in human pose estimation, and thus propose a novel model based on transformer architecture, enhanced with a feature pyramid fusion structure. More specifically, we use pre-trained Swin Transformer as our backbone and extract features from input images, we leverage a feature pyramid structure to extract feature maps from different stages. By fusing the features together, our model predicts the keypoint heatmap. The experiment results of our study have demonstrated that the proposed transformer-based model can achieve better performance compared to the state-of-the-art CNN-based models.

Characterizing Tourist Daily Trip Chains Using Mobile Phone Big Data

Tourists tend to visit multiple destinations out of their variety-seeking motivations in their trips. Thus, it is critical to discover travel patterns involving multi-destinations in tourism research. Existing relevant research most relied on survey data or focused on citizens due to the lack of large-scale, fine-grained tourism datasets. Several scholars have mentioned the notion of trip chains, but few works have been done towards quantitatively identifying the structures of trip chains. In this paper, we propose a model for quantitatively characterizing tourist daily trip chains. After applying this model to tourist mobile phone big data, underlying tourist travel patterns are discovered. Through the framework, we find that: (1) Most "hybrid" (inter-city and intra-city) and "intra-city" (only intra-city) patterns can be captured by only 13 key trip chains relatively; (2) For two continuous days, almost all kinds of original chains have a rather high probability to transfer to either the first two transferred chains, or other infrequent chains in our study areas; (3) The principle of least efforts (PLE) affects tourists' structures of trip chains. We can use average degree and average travel distance to interpret tourist travel behavior (achieving tasks in PLE). This study not only demonstrate the complex daily travel trip chains from tourism big data, but also fill the gap in tourism literature on multi-destination trips by discovering significant and underlying patterns based on mobile datasets.

An efficient Chorin-Temam projection proper orthogonal decomposition based reduced-order model for nonstationary Stokes equations

In this paper, we propose an efficient proper orthogonal decomposition based reduced-order model(POD-ROM) for nonstationary Stokes equations, which combines the classical projection method with POD technique. This new scheme mainly owns two advantages: the first one is low computational costs since the classical projection method decouples the reduced-order velocity variable and reduced-order pressure variable, and POD technique further improves the computational efficiency; the second advantage consists of circumventing the verification of classical LBB/inf-sup condition for mixed POD spaces with the help of pressure stabilized Petrov-Galerkin(PSPG)-type projection method, where the pressure stabilization term is inherent which allows the use of non inf-sup stable elements without adding extra stabilization terms. We first obtain the convergence of PSPG-type finite element projection scheme, and then analyze the proposed projection POD-ROM's stability and convergence. Numerical experiments validate out theoretical results.

Passive Motion Detection via mmWave Communication System

In this paper, an integrated passive sensing and communication system working in 60 GHz band is elaborated, and the sensing performance is investigated in an application of hand gesture recognition. Specifically, in this integrated system, there are two radio frequency (RF) chains at the receiver and one at the transmitter. Each RF chain is connected with one phased array for analog beamforming. To facilitate simultaneous sensing and communication, the transmitter delivers one stream of information-bearing signals via two beam lobes, one is aligned with the main signal propagation path and the other is directed to the sensing target. Signals from the two lobes are received by the two RF chains at the receiver, respectively. By cross ambiguity coherent processing, the time-Doppler spectrograms of hand gestures can be obtained. Relying on the passive sensing system, a dataset of received signals, where three types of hand gestures are sensed, is collected by using Line-of-Sight (LoS) and Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) paths as the reference channel respectively. Then a neural network is trained by the dataset for motion detection. It is shown that the classification accuracy rate is high as long as sufficient sensing time is assured. Finally, an empirical model characterizing the relation between the classification accuracy and sensing duration is derived analytically.

Learning to Minimize the Remainder in Supervised Learning

The learning process of deep learning methods usually updates the model's parameters in multiple iterations. Each iteration can be viewed as the first-order approximation of Taylor's series expansion. The remainder, which consists of higher-order terms, is usually ignored in the learning process for simplicity. This learning scheme empowers various multimedia based applications, such as image retrieval, recommendation system, and video search. Generally, multimedia data (e.g., images) are semantics-rich and high-dimensional, hence the remainders of approximations are possibly non-zero. In this work, we consider the remainder to be informative and study how it affects the learning process. To this end, we propose a new learning approach, namely gradient adjustment learning (GAL), to leverage the knowledge learned from the past training iterations to adjust vanilla gradients, such that the remainders are minimized and the approximations are improved. The proposed GAL is model- and optimizer-agnostic, and is easy to adapt to the standard learning framework. It is evaluated on three tasks, i.e., image classification, object detection, and regression, with state-of-the-art models and optimizers. The experiments show that the proposed GAL consistently enhances the evaluated models, whereas the ablation studies validate various aspects of the proposed GAL. The code is available at \url{https://github.com/luoyan407/gradient_adjustment.git}.

BBS: A Blockchain Big-Data Sharing System

Chain of custody is needed to document the sequence of custody of sensitive big data. In this paper, we design a blockchain big-data sharing system (BBS) based on Hyperledger Fabric. We denote the data stored outside of a ledger for sharing as "off-state" and "big data" (referring to extremely large data) is in this category. In our off-state sharing protocol, a sender registers a file with BBS for sharing. To acquire the file, an authenticated and authorized receiver has to use transactions and interacts with BBS in four phases, including the file transfer request, encrypted file transfer, key retrieval, and file decryption. The corresponding transactions are recorded in the ledger and serve as chain of custody to document the trail of the data. Compared with related work, BBS can perform the four phases autonomously. It utilizes the permissioned blockchain, i.e. Hyperledger Fabric, for access control and can defeat dishonest receivers. We design and implement a prototype of BBS for big file sharing. Extensive experiments were performed to validate its feasibility and performance.

Learning to Predict Trustworthiness with Steep Slope Loss

Understanding the trustworthiness of a prediction yielded by a classifier is critical for the safe and effective use of AI models. Prior efforts have been proven to be reliable on small-scale datasets. In this work, we study the problem of predicting trustworthiness on real-world large-scale datasets, where the task is more challenging due to high-dimensional features, diverse visual concepts, and large-scale samples. In such a setting, we observe that the trustworthiness predictors trained with prior-art loss functions, i.e., the cross entropy loss, focal loss, and true class probability confidence loss, are prone to view both correct predictions and incorrect predictions to be trustworthy. The reasons are two-fold. Firstly, correct predictions are generally dominant over incorrect predictions. Secondly, due to the data complexity, it is challenging to differentiate the incorrect predictions from the correct ones on real-world large-scale datasets. To improve the generalizability of trustworthiness predictors, we propose a novel steep slope loss to separate the features w.r.t. correct predictions from the ones w.r.t. incorrect predictions by two slide-like curves that oppose each other. The proposed loss is evaluated with two representative deep learning models, i.e., Vision Transformer and ResNet, as trustworthiness predictors. We conduct comprehensive experiments and analyses on ImageNet, which show that the proposed loss effectively improves the generalizability of trustworthiness predictors. The code and pre-trained trustworthiness predictors for reproducibility are available at https://github.com/luoyan407/predict_trustworthiness.

An efficient iterative method for solving parameter-dependent and random convention-diffusion problems

This paper develops and analyzes a general iterative framework for solving parameter-dependent and random convection-diffusion problems. It is inspired by the multi-modes method of [7,8] and the ensemble method of [20] and extends those methods into a more general and unified framework. The main idea of the framework is to reformulate the underlying problem into another problem with parameter-independent convection and diffusion coefficients and a parameter-dependent (and solution-dependent) right-hand side, a fixed-point iteration is then employed to compute the solution of the reformulated problem. The main benefit of the proposed approach is that an efficient direct solver and a block Krylov subspace iterative solver can be used at each iteration, allowing to reuse the $LU$ matrix factorization or to do an efficient matrix-matrix multiplication for all parameters, which in turn results in significant computation saving. Convergence and rates of convergence are established for the iterative method both at the variational continuous level and at the finite element discrete level under some structure conditions. Several strategies for establishing reformulations of parameter-dependent and random diffusion and convection-diffusion problems are proposed and their computational complexity is analyzed. Several 1-D and 2-D numerical experiments are also provided to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed iterative method and to validate the theoretical convergence results.

BOSS: A Blockchain Off-State Sharing System

Blockchain has been applied to data sharing to ensure the integrity of data and chain of custody. Sharing big data such as large biomedical data files is a challenge to blockchain systems since the ledger is not designed to maintain big files, access control is an issue, and users may be dishonest. We call big data such as big files stored outside of a ledger that includes the blockchain and world state at a blockchain node as "off-state" and propose an off-state sharing protocol for a blockchain system to share big data between pairs of nodes. In our protocol, only encrypted files are transferred. The cryptographic key is stored in the world state in a secure way and can be accessed only by authorized parties. A receiver has to request the corresponding cryptographic key from the sender to decrypt such encrypted files. All requests are run through transactions to establish reliable chain of custody. We design and implement a prototypical blockchain off-state sharing system, BOSS, with Hyperledger Fabric. Extensive experiments were performed to validate the feasibility and performance of BOSS.

Embracing Uncertainty: Decoupling and De-bias for Robust Temporal Grounding

Temporal grounding aims to localize temporal boundaries within untrimmed videos by language queries, but it faces the challenge of two types of inevitable human uncertainties: query uncertainty and label uncertainty. The two uncertainties stem from human subjectivity, leading to limited generalization ability of temporal grounding. In this work, we propose a novel DeNet (Decoupling and De-bias) to embrace human uncertainty: Decoupling - We explicitly disentangle each query into a relation feature and a modified feature. The relation feature, which is mainly based on skeleton-like words (including nouns and verbs), aims to extract basic and consistent information in the presence of query uncertainty. Meanwhile, modified feature assigned with style-like words (including adjectives, adverbs, etc) represents the subjective information, and thus brings personalized predictions; De-bias - We propose a de-bias mechanism to generate diverse predictions, aim to alleviate the bias caused by single-style annotations in the presence of label uncertainty. Moreover, we put forward new multi-label metrics to diversify the performance evaluation. Extensive experiments show that our approach is more effective and robust than state-of-the-arts on Charades-STA and ActivityNet Captions datasets.

Multi-Task Hierarchical Learning Based Network Traffic Analytics

Classifying network traffic is the basis for important network applications. Prior research in this area has faced challenges on the availability of representative datasets, and many of the results cannot be readily reproduced. Such a problem is exacerbated by emerging data-driven machine learning based approaches. To address this issue, we present(N et)2databasewith three open datasets containing nearly 1.3M labeled flows in total, with a comprehensive list of flow features, for there search community1. We focus on broad aspects in network traffic analysis, including both malware detection and application classification. As we continue to grow them, we expect the datasets to serve as a common ground for AI driven, reproducible research on network flow analytics. We release the datasets publicly and also introduce a Multi-Task Hierarchical Learning (MTHL)model to perform all tasks in a single model. Our results show that MTHL is capable of accurately performing multiple tasks with hierarchical labeling with a dramatic reduction in training time.

Which to Match? Selecting Consistent GT-Proposal Assignment for Pedestrian Detection

Accurate pedestrian classification and localization have received considerable attention due to their wide applications such as security monitoring, autonomous driving, etc. Although pedestrian detectors have made great progress in recent years, the fixed Intersection over Union (IoU) based assignment-regression manner still limits their performance. Two main factors are responsible for this: 1) the IoU threshold faces a dilemma that a lower one will result in more false positives, while a higher one will filter out the matched positives; 2) the IoU-based GT-Proposal assignment suffers from the inconsistent supervision problem that spatially adjacent proposals with similar features are assigned to different ground-truth boxes, which means some very similar proposals may be forced to regress towards different targets, and thus confuses the bounding-box regression when predicting the location results. In this paper, we first put forward the question that \textbf{Regression Direction} would affect the performance for pedestrian detection. Consequently, we address the weakness of IoU by introducing one geometric sensitive search algorithm as a new assignment and regression metric. Different from the previous IoU-based \textbf{one-to-one} assignment manner of one proposal to one ground-truth box, the proposed method attempts to seek a reasonable matching between the sets of proposals and ground-truth boxes. Specifically, we boost the MR-FPPI under R$_{75}$ by 8.8\% on Citypersons dataset. Furthermore, by incorporating this method as a metric into the state-of-the-art pedestrian detectors, we show a consistent improvement.

Where, What, Whether: Multi-modal Learning Meets Pedestrian Detection

Pedestrian detection benefits greatly from deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, it is inherently hard for CNNs to handle situations in the presence of occlusion and scale variation. In this paper, we propose W$^3$Net, which attempts to address above challenges by decomposing the pedestrian detection task into \textbf{\textit{W}}here, \textbf{\textit{W}}hat and \textbf{\textit{W}}hether problem directing against pedestrian localization, scale prediction and classification correspondingly. Specifically, for a pedestrian instance, we formulate its feature by three steps. i) We generate a bird view map, which is naturally free from occlusion issues, and scan all points on it to look for suitable locations for each pedestrian instance. ii) Instead of utilizing pre-fixed anchors, we model the interdependency between depth and scale aiming at generating depth-guided scales at different locations for better matching instances of different sizes. iii) We learn a latent vector shared by both visual and corpus space, by which false positives with similar vertical structure but lacking human partial features would be filtered out. We achieve state-of-the-art results on widely used datasets (Citypersons and Caltech). In particular. when evaluating on heavy occlusion subset, our results reduce MR$^{-2}$ from 49.3$\%$ to 18.7$\%$ on Citypersons, and from 45.18$\%$ to 28.33$\%$ on Caltech.

The macula fovea is responsible for sharp central vision, which is necessary for human behaviors where visual detail is of primary importance, such as reading, writing, driving, etc. This paper proposes a novel method to locate the macula through a series of morphological processing. On the premise of maintaining high accuracy, our approach is simpler and faster than others. Furthermore, for the hospital's real images, our method is also able to detect the macula robustly.

The TianQin project: current progress on science and technology

TianQin is a planned space-based gravitational wave (GW) observatory consisting of three earth orbiting satellites with an orbital radius of about $10^5~{\rm km}$. The satellites will form a equilateral triangle constellation the plane of which is nearly perpendicular to the ecliptic plane. TianQin aims to detect GWs between $10^{-4}~{\rm Hz}$ and $1~{\rm Hz}$ that can be generated by a wide variety of important astrophysical and cosmological sources, including the inspiral of Galactic ultra-compact binaries, the inspiral of stellar-mass black hole binaries, extreme mass ratio inspirals, the merger of massive black hole binaries, and possibly the energetic processes in the very early universe or exotic sources such as cosmic strings. In order to start science operations around 2035, a roadmap called the 0123 plan is being used to bring the key technologies of TianQin to maturity, supported by the construction of a series of research facilities on the ground. Two major projects of the 0123 plan are being carried out. In this process, the team has created a new generation $17~{\rm cm}$ single-body hollow corner-cube retro-reflector which has been launched with the QueQiao satellite on 21 May 2018; a new laser ranging station equipped with a $1.2~{\rm m}$ telescope has been constructed and the station has successfully ranged to all the five retro-reflectors on the Moon; and the TianQin-1 experimental satellite has been launched on 20 December 2019 and the first round result shows that the satellite has exceeded all of its mission requirements.
