Two Simple Principles for Diffusion-Based Test-Time Adaptation

Recently, diffusion-based test-time adaptations (TTA) have shown great advances, which leverage a diffusion model to map the images in the unknown test domain to the training domain. The unseen and diverse test domains make diffusion-based TTA an ill-posed problem. In this paper, we unravel two simple principles of the design tricks for diffusion-based methods. Intuitively, \textit{Principle 1} says semantic similarity preserving. We should preserve the semantic similarity between the original and generated test images. \textit{Principle 2} suggests minimal modifications. This principle enables the diffusion to map the test images to the training domain with minimal modifications of the test images. In particular, following the two principles, we propose our simple yet effective principle-guided diffusion-based test-time adaptation method (PDDA). Concretely, following Principle 1, we propose a semantic keeper, the method to preserve feature similarity, where the semantic keeper could filter the corruption introduced from the test domain, thus better preserving the semantics. Following Principle 2, we propose a modification keeper, where we introduce a regularization constraint into the generative process to minimize modifications to the test image. Meanwhile, there is a hidden conflict between the two principles. We further introduce the gradient-based view to unify the direction generated from two principles. Extensive experiments on CIFAR-10C, CIFAR-100C, ImageNet-W, and ImageNet-C with WideResNet-28-10, ResNet-50, Swin-T, and ConvNext-T demonstrate that PDDA significantly performs better than the complex state-of-the-art baselines. Specifically, PDDA achieves 2.4\% average accuracy improvements in ImageNet-C without any training process.

Enhanced Multi-Tuple Extraction for Alloys: Integrating Pointer Networks and Augmented Attention

Extracting high-quality structured information from scientific literature is crucial for advancing material design through data-driven methods. Despite the considerable research in natural language processing for dataset extraction, effective approaches for multi-tuple extraction in scientific literature remain scarce due to the complex interrelations of tuples and contextual ambiguities. In the study, we illustrate the multi-tuple extraction of mechanical properties from multi-principal-element alloys and presents a novel framework that combines an entity extraction model based on MatSciBERT with pointer networks and an allocation model utilizing inter- and intra-entity attention. Our rigorous experiments on tuple extraction demonstrate impressive F1 scores of 0.963, 0.947, 0.848, and 0.753 across datasets with 1, 2, 3, and 4 tuples, confirming the effectiveness of the model. Furthermore, an F1 score of 0.854 was achieved on a randomly curated dataset. These results highlight the model's capacity to deliver precise and structured information, offering a robust alternative to large language models and equipping researchers with essential data for fostering data-driven innovations.

OTO Planner: An Efficient Only Travelling Once Exploration Planner for Complex and Unknown Environments

Autonomous exploration in complex and cluttered environments is essential for various applications. However, there are many challenges due to the lack of global heuristic information. Existing exploration methods suffer from the repeated paths and considerable computational resource requirement in large-scale environments. To address the above issues, this letter proposes an efficient exploration planner that reduces repeated paths in complex environments, hence it is called "Only Travelling Once Planner". OTO Planner includes fast frontier updating, viewpoint evaluation and viewpoint refinement. A selective frontier updating mechanism is designed, saving a large amount of computational resources. In addition, a novel viewpoint evaluation system is devised to reduce the repeated paths utilizing the enclosed sub-region detection. Besides, a viewpoint refinement approach is raised to concentrate the redundant viewpoints, leading to smoother paths. We conduct extensive simulation and real-world experiments to validate the proposed method. Compared to the state-of-the-art approach, the proposed method reduces the exploration time and movement distance by 10%-20% and improves the speed of frontier detection by 6-9 times.

ATI-CTLO:Adaptive Temporal Interval-based Continuous-Time LiDAR-Only Odometry

The motion distortion in LiDAR scans caused by aggressive robot motion and varying terrain features significantly impacts the positioning and mapping performance of 3D LiDAR odometry. Existing distortion correction solutions often struggle to balance computational complexity and accuracy. In this work, we propose an Adaptive Temporal Interval-based Continuous-Time LiDAR-only Odometry, utilizing straightforward and efficient linear interpolation. Our method flexibly adjusts the temporal intervals between control nodes according to the dynamics of motion and environmental characteristics. This adaptability enhances performance across various motion states and improves robustness in challenging, feature-sparse environments. We validate the effectiveness of our method on multiple datasets across different platforms, achieving accuracy comparable to state-of-the-art LiDAR-only odometry methods. Notably, in scenarios involving aggressive motion and sparse features, our method outperforms existing solutions.

Secure Combination of Untrusted Time information Based on Optimized Dempster-Shafer Theory

Secure precision time synchronization is important for applications of Cyber-Physical Systems. However, several attacks, especially the Time Delay Attack (TDA), deteriorates the performance of time synchronization system seriously. Multiple paths scheme is thought as an effective security countermeasure to decrease the influence of TDA. However, the effective secure combination algorithm is still missed for precision time synchronization. In this paper, a secure combination algorithm based on Dempster-Shafer theory is proposed for multiple paths method. Special optimizations are done for the combination algorithm to solve the potential problems due to untrusted evidence. Theoretical simulation shows that the proposed algorithm works much better than Fault Tolerant Algorithm (FTA) and the attack detection method based on single path. And experimental demonstration proves the feasibility and superiority of the proposed algorithm, where the time stability with 27.97 ps, 1.57 ps, and 1.12 ps at average time 1s, 10s, 100s is achieved under TDA and local clock jump. The proposed algorithm can be used to improve the security and resilience of many importance synchronization protocol, such as NTP, PTP, and TWFTT.

CoRaiS: Lightweight Real-Time Scheduler for Multi-Edge Cooperative Computing

Multi-edge cooperative computing that combines constrained resources of multiple edges into a powerful resource pool has the potential to deliver great benefits, such as a tremendous computing power, improved response time, more diversified services. However, the mass heterogeneous resources composition and lack of scheduling strategies make the modeling and cooperating of multi-edge computing system particularly complicated. This paper first proposes a system-level state evaluation model to shield the complex hardware configurations and redefine the different service capabilities at heterogeneous edges. Secondly, an integer linear programming model is designed to cater for optimally dispatching the distributed arriving requests. Finally, a learning-based lightweight real-time scheduler, CoRaiS, is proposed. CoRaiS embeds the real-time states of multi-edge system and requests information, and combines the embeddings with a policy network to schedule the requests, so that the response time of all requests can be minimized. Evaluation results verify that CoRaiS can make a high-quality scheduling decision in real time, and can be generalized to other multi-edge computing system, regardless of system scales. Characteristic validation also demonstrates that CoRaiS successfully learns to balance loads, perceive real-time state and recognize heterogeneity while scheduling.

Improving Entropy-Based Test-Time Adaptation from a Clustering View

Domain shift is a common problem in the realistic world, where training data and test data follow different data distributions. To deal with this problem, fully test-time adaptation (TTA) leverages the unlabeled data encountered during test time to adapt the model. In particular, entropy-based TTA (EBTTA) methods, which minimize the prediction's entropy on test samples, have shown great success. In this paper, we introduce a new clustering perspective on the EBTTA. It is an iterative algorithm: 1) in the assignment step, the forward process of the EBTTA models is the assignment of labels for these test samples, and 2) in the updating step, the backward process is the update of the model via the assigned samples. This new perspective allows us to explore how entropy minimization influences test-time adaptation. Accordingly, this observation can guide us to put forward the improvement of EBTTA. We propose to improve EBTTA from the assignment step and the updating step, where robust label assignment, similarity-preserving constraint, sample selection, and gradient accumulation are proposed to explicitly utilize more information. Experimental results demonstrate that our method can achieve consistent improvements on various datasets. Code is provided in the supplementary material.

Highly stable power control for chip-based continuous-variable quantum key distribution system

Quantum key distribution allows secret key generation with information theoretical security. It can be realized with photonic integrated circuits to benefit the tiny footprints and the large-scale manufacturing capacity. Continuous-variable quantum key distribution is suitable for chip-based integration due to its compatibility with mature optical communication devices. However, the quantum signal power control compatible with the mature photonic integration process faces difficulties on stability, which limits the system performance and causes the overestimation of secret key rate that opens practical security loopholes. Here, a highly stable chip-based quantum signal power control scheme based on a biased Mach-Zehnder interferometer structure is proposed, theoretically analyzed and experimentally implemented with standard silicon photonic techniques. Simulations and experimental results show that the proposed scheme significantly improves the system stability, where the standard deviation of the secret key rate is suppressed by an order of magnitude compared with the system using traditional designs, showing a promising and practicable way to realize highly stable continuous-variable quantum key distribution system on chip.

High-Rate 16-node quantum access network based on passive optical network

Quantum key distribution can provide information-theoretical secure communication, which is now heading towards building the quantum secure network for real-world applications. In most built quantum secure networks, point-to-multipoint (PTMP) topology is one of the most popular schemes, especially for quantum access networks. However, due to the lack of custom protocols with high secret key rate and compatible with classical optical networks for PTMP scheme, there is still no efficient way for a high-performance quantum access network with a multitude of users. Here, we report an experimental demonstration of a high-rate 16-nodes quantum access network based on passive optical network, where a high-efficient coherent-state PTMP protocol is novelly designed to allow independent secret key generation between one transmitter and multiple receivers concurrently. Such accomplishment is attributed to a well-designed real-time shot-noise calibration method, a series of advanced digital signal processing algorithms and a flexible post-processing strategy with high success probability. Finally, the experimental results show that the average secret key rate is around 2.086 Mbps between the transmitter and each user, which is two orders of magnitude higher than previous demonstrations. With the advantages of low cost, excellent compatibility, and wide bandwidth, our work paves the way for building practical PTMP quantum access networks, thus constituting an important step towards scalable quantum secure networks.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution over 28.6 km fiber with an integrated silicon photonic receiver chip

Quantum key distribution, which ensures information-theoretically secret key generation, is currently advancing through photonic integration to achieve high performance, cost reduction and compact size, thereby facilitating the large-scale deployment. Continuous-variable quantum key distribution is an attractive approach for photonic integrations due to its compatibility with off-the-shelf optical communication devices. However, its chip-based systems have encountered significant limitations primarily related to the shot-noise-limited receiver design, which demands low noise, wide bandwidth, high clearance and well stability. Here, we report the implementation of a real local oscillator continuous-variable quantum key distribution system with an integrated silicon photonic receiver chip. Thanks to the well-designed chip-based homodyne detectors with a bandwidth up to 1.5 GHz and a clearance up to 7.42 dB, the transmission distance of the system has been extended to 28.6 km, achieving a secret key generation rate of Mbps level. This technological advancement enables the quantum key distribution systems with photonic integrated receivers to achieve the coverage in both access network scenarios and short-distance metropolitan interconnections, paving the way for the development of the next-generation quantum key distribution networks on a large scale.

The Future of Cognitive Strategy-enhanced Persuasive Dialogue Agents: New Perspectives and Trends

Persuasion, as one of the crucial abilities in human communication, has garnered extensive attention from researchers within the field of intelligent dialogue systems. We humans tend to persuade others to change their viewpoints, attitudes or behaviors through conversations in various scenarios (e.g., persuasion for social good, arguing in online platforms). Developing dialogue agents that can persuade others to accept certain standpoints is essential to achieving truly intelligent and anthropomorphic dialogue system. Benefiting from the substantial progress of Large Language Models (LLMs), dialogue agents have acquired an exceptional capability in context understanding and response generation. However, as a typical and complicated cognitive psychological system, persuasive dialogue agents also require knowledge from the domain of cognitive psychology to attain a level of human-like persuasion. Consequently, the cognitive strategy-enhanced persuasive dialogue agent (defined as CogAgent), which incorporates cognitive strategies to achieve persuasive targets through conversation, has become a predominant research paradigm. To depict the research trends of CogAgent, in this paper, we first present several fundamental cognitive psychology theories and give the formalized definition of three typical cognitive strategies, including the persuasion strategy, the topic path planning strategy, and the argument structure prediction strategy. Then we propose a new system architecture by incorporating the formalized definition to lay the foundation of CogAgent. Representative works are detailed and investigated according to the combined cognitive strategy, followed by the summary of authoritative benchmarks and evaluation metrics. Finally, we summarize our insights on open issues and future directions of CogAgent for upcoming researchers.

Pioneering Deterministic Scheduling and Network Structure Optimization for Time-Critical Computing Tasks in Industrial IoT

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has become a critical technology to accelerate the process of digital and intelligent transformation of industries. As the cooperative relationship between smart devices in IIoT becomes more complex, getting deterministic responses of IIoT periodic time-critical computing tasks becomes a crucial and nontrivial problem. However, few current works in cloud/edge/fog computing focus on this problem. This paper is a pioneer to explore the deterministic scheduling and network structural optimization problems for IIoT periodic time-critical computing tasks. We first formulate the two problems and derive theorems to help quickly identify computation and network resource sharing conflicts. Based on this, we propose a deterministic scheduling algorithm, \textit{IIoTBroker}, which realizes deterministic response for each IIoT task by optimizing the fine-grained computation and network resources allocations, and a network optimization algorithm, \textit{IIoTDeployer}, providing a cost-effective structural upgrade solution for existing IIoT networks. Our methods are illustrated to be cost-friendly, scalable, and deterministic response guaranteed with low computation cost from our simulation results.

An Ultra-fast Quantum Random Number Generation Scheme Based on Laser Phase Noise

Based on the intrinsic random property of quantum mechanics, quantum random number generators allow for access of truly unpredictable random sequence and are now heading towards high performance and small miniaturization, among which a popular scheme is based on the laser phase noise. However, this scheme is generally limited in speed and implementation complexity, especially for chip integration. In this work, a general physical model based on wiener process for such schemes is introduced, which provides an approach to clearly explain the limitation on the generation rate and comprehensively optimize the system performance. We present an insight to exploit the potential bandwidth of the quantum entropy source that contains plentiful quantum randomness with a simple spectral filtering method and experimentally boost the bandwidth of the corresponding quantum entropy source to 20 GHz, based on which an ultra-fast generation rate of 218 Gbps is demonstrated, setting a new record for laser phase noise based schemes by one order of magnitude. Our proposal significantly enhances the ceiling speed of such schemes without requiring extra complex hardware, thus effectively benefits the corresponding chip integration with high performance and low implementation cost, which paves the way for its large-scale applications.

Camera-LiDAR Fusion with Latent Contact for Place Recognition in Challenging Cross-Scenes

Although significant progress has been made, achieving place recognition in environments with perspective changes, seasonal variations, and scene transformations remains challenging. Relying solely on perception information from a single sensor is insufficient to address these issues. Recognizing the complementarity between cameras and LiDAR, multi-modal fusion methods have attracted attention. To address the information waste in existing multi-modal fusion works, this paper introduces a novel three-channel place descriptor, which consists of a cascade of image, point cloud, and fusion branches. Specifically, the fusion-based branch employs a dual-stage pipeline, leveraging the correlation between the two modalities with latent contacts, thereby facilitating information interaction and fusion. Extensive experiments on the KITTI, NCLT, USVInland, and the campus dataset demonstrate that the proposed place descriptor stands as the state-of-the-art approach, confirming its robustness and generality in challenging scenarios.

MotionBEV: Attention-Aware Online LiDAR Moving Object Segmentation with Bird's Eye View based Appearance and Motion Features

Identifying moving objects is an essential capability for autonomous systems, as it provides critical information for pose estimation, navigation, collision avoidance, and static map construction. In this paper, we present MotionBEV, a fast and accurate framework for LiDAR moving object segmentation, which segments moving objects with appearance and motion features in the bird's eye view (BEV) domain. Our approach converts 3D LiDAR scans into a 2D polar BEV representation to improve computational efficiency. Specifically, we learn appearance features with a simplified PointNet and compute motion features through the height differences of consecutive frames of point clouds projected onto vertical columns in the polar BEV coordinate system. We employ a dual-branch network bridged by the Appearance-Motion Co-attention Module (AMCM) to adaptively fuse the spatio-temporal information from appearance and motion features. Our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance on the SemanticKITTI-MOS benchmark. Furthermore, to demonstrate the practical effectiveness of our method, we provide a LiDAR-MOS dataset recorded by a solid-state LiDAR, which features non-repetitive scanning patterns and a small field of view.

Toward Understanding Why Adam Converges Faster Than SGD for Transformers

While stochastic gradient descent (SGD) is still the most popular optimization algorithm in deep learning, adaptive algorithms such as Adam have established empirical advantages over SGD in some deep learning applications such as training transformers. However, it remains a question that why Adam converges significantly faster than SGD in these scenarios. In this paper, we propose one explanation of why Adam converges faster than SGD using a new concept directional sharpness. We argue that the performance of optimization algorithms is closely related to the directional sharpness of the update steps, and show SGD has much worse directional sharpness compared to adaptive algorithms. We further observe that only a small fraction of the coordinates causes the bad sharpness and slow convergence of SGD, and propose to use coordinate-wise clipping as a solution to SGD and other optimization algorithms. We demonstrate the effect of coordinate-wise clipping on sharpness reduction and speeding up the convergence of optimization algorithms under various settings. We show that coordinate-wise clipping improves the local loss reduction when only a small fraction of the coordinates has bad sharpness. We conclude that the sharpness reduction effect of adaptive coordinate-wise scaling is the reason for Adam's success in practice and suggest the use of coordinate-wise clipping as a universal technique to speed up deep learning optimization.

Simple and Fast Polarization Tracking algorithm for Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution System Using Orthogonal Pilot Tone

To reduce the influence of random channel polarization variation, especially fast polarization perturbation, for continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) systems, a simple and fast polarization tracking algorithm is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The algorithm is implemented by an orthogonal pilot tone scheme, one of the pilot tones is used for estimating the polarization rotation angle, and the other one is used for compensating the polarization perturbation introduced phase noise. Meanwhile, residual effects are compensated precisely with the help of a real-valued FIR filter. In this case, the excess noise introduced by polarization perturbation is effectively suppressed. Experimental results show that the polarization scrambling rate 12.57 krad/s can be tracked by using the proposed algorithm, and a good estimated parameters performance is achieved. Compared to conventional polarization tracking algorithms such as the constant modulus algorithm (CMA), experimental results show that the polarization tracking apability of the proposed algorithm is significantly improved. Furthermore, much faster polarization tracking performance is evaluated by digital simulations, and the simulation results show that about 188.50 Mrad/s can be tracked by the proposed algorithm. Thus, our method provides effective technology for the practical application of fiber-based CV-QKD.

Performance analysis for OFDM-based multi-carrier continuous-variable quantum key distribution with arbitrary modulation protocol

Multi-carrier continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) is considered to be a promising way to boost the secret key rate (SKR) over the existing single-carrier CV-QKD scheme. However, the extra excess noise induced in the imperfect multi-carrier quantum state preparation process of N subcarriers will limit the performance of the system. Here, a systematic modulation noise model is proposed for the multi-carrier CV-QKD based on the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Subsequently, the performance of multi-carrier CV-QKD with arbitrary modulation protocol (e.g. QPSK, 256QAM and Gaussian modulation protocol) can be quantitatively evaluated by combining the security analysis method of the single-carrier CV-QKD. Under practical system parameters, the simulation results show that the SKR of the multi-carrier CV-QKD can still be significantly improved by increasing the carrier number N even with imperfect practical modulations. Specifically, the total SKR of multi-carrier CV-QKD can be optimized by carefully choosing N. The proposed model provides a feasible theoretical framework for the future multi-carrier CV-QKD experimental implementation.
