Multi-Precision Quantized Neural Networks via Encoding Decomposition of -1 and +1

The training of deep neural networks (DNNs) requires intensive resources both for computation and for storage performance. Thus, DNNs cannot be efficiently applied to mobile phones and embedded devices, which seriously limits their applicability in industry applications. To address this issue, we propose a novel encoding scheme of using {-1,+1} to decompose quantized neural networks (QNNs) into multi-branch binary networks, which can be efficiently implemented by bitwise operations (xnor and bitcount) to achieve model compression, computational acceleration and resource saving. Based on our method, users can easily achieve different encoding precisions arbitrarily according to their requirements and hardware resources. The proposed mechanism is very suitable for the use of FPGA and ASIC in terms of data storage and computation, which provides a feasible idea for smart chips. We validate the effectiveness of our method on both large-scale image classification tasks (e.g., ImageNet) and object detection tasks. In particular, our method with low-bit encoding can still achieve almost the same performance as its full-precision counterparts.

ASVRG: Accelerated Proximal SVRG

This paper proposes an accelerated proximal stochastic variance reduced gradient (ASVRG) method, in which we design a simple and effective momentum acceleration trick. Unlike most existing accelerated stochastic variance reduction methods such as Katyusha, ASVRG has only one additional variable and one momentum parameter. Thus, ASVRG is much simpler than those methods, and has much lower per-iteration complexity. We prove that ASVRG achieves the best known oracle complexities for both strongly convex and non-strongly convex objectives. In addition, we extend ASVRG to mini-batch and non-smooth settings. We also empirically verify our theoretical results and show that the performance of ASVRG is comparable with, and sometimes even better than that of the state-of-the-art stochastic methods.

An answer to Hammerlindl's question on strong unstable foliations

Let $f: \mathbb{T}^3\to\mathbb{T}^3$ be a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism on the 3-torus $\mathbb{T}^3$. In his thesis, Hammerlindl proved that for lifted center foliation $\mathcal{F}^c_f$, there exists $R>0$, such that for any $x\in \mathbb{R}^3$, ${\cal F}^c_f(x)\subset B_R (x+E^c)$, where $\mathbb{R}^3=E^s\oplus E^c\oplus E^u$ is the partially hyperbolic splitting of the linear model of $f$. The same is true for the lifted center-stable and center-unstable foliations. Then he asked if the this property is true for strong stable and strong unstable foliations. In this note, we give a negative answer to Hammerlindl's question.

Cicada: a Heavy but Agile Flyer

"Cicada: a Heavy but Agile Flyer" is a fluid dynamic video submitted to Gallery of Fluid Motion in APS-DFD 2011. Comparing to other insects, cicadas can generate much higher lift to overcome their large body weight. The hidden mechanism may help in designing a Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) to carry large payloads. However, it is lack of literatures in discussing how cicadas use their wings to accomplish various flights. In this work, a high-speed photogrammetry system and 3D surface reconstruction technology are used to reveal cicada wing kinematics and deformation during a freely forward flight. The aerodynamic performance is studied using in-house immerse boundary method based Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) solver.

Deterioration of Damselfly Flight Performance due to Wing Damage

In this video, effect of chordwise damage on a damselfly (American Rubyspot)'s wings is investigated. High speed photogrammetry was used to collect the data of damselflies' flight with intact and damaged wings along the wing chord. Different level of deterioration of flight performance can be observed. Further investigation will be on the dynamic and aerodynamic roles of each wing with and without damage.
