Unusual topological polar texture in moiré ferroelectrics

Topological polar textures in ferroelectrics have attracted significant interest for their potential for energy-efficient and high-density data storage and processing. Among these, polar merons and antimerons are predicted in strained and twisted bilayers of inversion symmetry broken systems. However, experimental observation of these polar textures within twisted two-dimensional van der Waals (2D vdW) materials remains challenging. Here, we utilize vector piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) to reconstruct the polarization fields in R-type marginally twisted hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). We observe alternating out-of-plane (OOP) polarizations at domain regions and in-plane (IP) vortex-like polarization patterns along domain walls (DWs), indicative of a network of polar merons and antimerons. Notably, the OOP polarization exhibits three polarity reversals across a DW. Similar polar textures are identified in marginally twisted MoSe2 and WSe2 homobilayers. Our theoretical simulations attribute these unusual polarization reversals near the DWs to the competition between moiré ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity. These results provide experimental evidence of complex polar textures in moiré ferroelectrics, offering new insights into the electronic band topology in twisted transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs).

Mass Acquisition of Dirac Fermions in Bi4I4 by Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking

Massive Dirac fermions, which are essential for realizing novel topological phenomena, are expected to be generated from massless Dirac fermions by breaking the related symmetry, such as time-reversal symmetry (TRS) in topological insulators or crystal symmetry in topological crystalline insulators. Here, we report scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies of α-Bi4I4, which reveals the realization of massive Dirac fermions in the (100) surface states without breaking the TRS. Combined with first-principle calculations, our experimental results indicate that the spontaneous symmetry breaking engenders two nondegenerate edges states at the opposite sides of monolayer Bi4I4 after the structural phase transition, imparting mass to the Dirac fermions after taking the interlayer coupling into account. Our results not only demonstrate the formation of the massive Dirac fermions by spontaneous symmetry breaking, but also imply the potential for the engineering of Dirac fermions for device applications.

Synergistic Interplay of Large Language Model and Digital Twin for Autonomous Optical Networks: Field Demonstrations

The development of large language models (LLM) has revolutionized various fields and is anticipated to drive the advancement of autonomous systems. In the context of autonomous optical networks, creating a high-level cognitive agent in the control layer remains a challenge. However, LLM is primarily developed for natural language processing tasks, rendering them less effective in predicting the physical dynamics of optical communications. Moreover, optical networks demand rigorous stability, where direct deployment of strategies generated from LLM poses safety concerns. In this paper, a digital twin (DT)-enhanced LLM scheme is proposed to facilitate autonomous optical networks. By leveraging monitoring data and advanced models, the DT of optical networks can accurately characterize their physical dynamics, furnishing LLMs with dynamic-updated information for reliable decision-making. Prior to deployment, the generated strategies from LLM can be pre-verified in the DT platform, which also provides feedback to the LLM for further refinement of strategies. The synergistic interplay between DT and LLM for autonomous optical networks is demonstrated through three scenarios: performance optimization under dynamic loadings in an experimental C+L-band long-haul transmission link, protection switching for device upgrading in a field-deployed six-node mesh network, and performance recovery after fiber cuts in a field-deployed C+L-band transmission link.

Optimizing food taste sensory evaluation through neural network-based taste electroencephalogram channel selection

The taste electroencephalogram (EEG) evoked by the taste stimulation can reflect different brain patterns and be used in applications such as sensory evaluation of food. However, considering the computational cost and efficiency, EEG data with many channels has to face the critical issue of channel selection. This paper proposed a channel selection method called class activation mapping with attention (CAM-Attention). The CAM-Attention method combined a convolutional neural network with channel and spatial attention (CNN-CSA) model with a gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM) model. The CNN-CSA model exploited key features in EEG data by attention mechanism, and the Grad-CAM model effectively realized the visualization of feature regions. Then, channel selection was effectively implemented based on feature regions. Finally, the CAM-Attention method reduced the computational burden of taste EEG recognition and effectively distinguished the four tastes. In short, it has excellent recognition performance and provides effective technical support for taste sensory evaluation.

Constructing Mechanical Design Agent Based on Large Language Models

Since ancient times, mechanical design aids have been developed to assist human users, aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of design. However, even with the widespread use of contemporary Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems, there are still high learning costs, repetitive work, and other challenges. In recent years, the rise of Large Language Models (LLMs) has introduced new productivity opportunities to the field of mechanical design. Yet, it remains unrealistic to rely on LLMs alone to complete mechanical design tasks directly. Through a series of explorations, we propose a method for constructing a comprehensive Mechanical Design Agent (MDA) by guiding LLM learning. To verify the validity of our proposed method, we conducted a series of experiments and presented relevant cases.

Sampling and active learning methods for network reliability estimation using K-terminal spanning tree

Network reliability analysis remains a challenge due to the increasing size and complexity of networks. This paper presents a novel sampling method and an active learning method for efficient and accurate network reliability estimation under node failure and edge failure scenarios. The proposed sampling method adopts Monte Carlo technique to sample component lifetimes and the K-terminal spanning tree algorithm to accelerate structure function computation. Unlike existing methods that compute only one structure function value per sample, our method generates multiple component state vectors and corresponding structure function values from each sample. Network reliability is estimated based on survival signatures derived from these values. A transformation technique extends this method to handle both node failure and edge failure. To enhance efficiency of proposed sampling method and achieve adaptability to network topology changes, we introduce an active learning method utilizing a random forest (RF) classifier. This classifier directly predicts structure function values, integrates network behaviors across diverse topologies, and undergoes iterative refinement to enhance predictive accuracy. Importantly, the trained RF classifier can directly predict reliability for variant networks, a capability beyond the sampling method alone. Through investigating several network examples and two practical applications, the effectiveness of both proposed methods is demonstrated.

Layer-dependent electromechanical response in twisted graphene moiré superlattices

The coupling of mechanical deformation and electrical stimuli at the nanoscale has been a subject of intense investigation in the realm of materials science. Recently, twisted van der Waals (vdW) materials have emerged as a platform to explore exotic quantum states. These states are intimately tied to the formation of moiré superlattices, which can be visualized directly exploiting the electromechanical response. However, the origin of the response, even in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG), remains unsettled. Here, employing lateral piezoresponse force microscopy (LPFM), we investigate the electromechanical responses of marginally twisted graphene moiré superlattices with different layer thicknesses. We observe distinct LPFM amplitudes and spatial profiles in tBLG and twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene (tMBG), exhibiting effective in-plane piezoelectric coefficients of 0.05 pm/V and 0.35 pm/V, respectively. Force tuning experiments further underscore a marked divergence in their responses. The contrasting behaviors suggest different electromechanical couplings in tBLG and tMBG. In tBLG, the response near the domain walls is attributed to the flexoelectric effect, while in tMBG, the behaviors can be comprehended within the context of piezoelectric effect. Our results not only provide insights to electromechanical and corporative effects in twisted vdW materials with different stacking symmetries, but may also show their potential for engineering them at the nanoscale.

Robust TOA-based Localization with Inaccurate Anchors for MANET

Accurate node localization is vital for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). Current methods like Time of Arrival (TOA) can estimate node positions using imprecise baseplates and achieve the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) accuracy. In multi-hop MANETs, some nodes lack direct links to base anchors, depending on neighbor nodes as dynamic anchors for chain localization. However, the dynamic nature of MANETs challenges TOA's robustness due to the availability and accuracy of base anchors, coupled with ranging errors. To address the issue of cascading positioning error divergence, we first derive the CRLB for any primary node in MANETs as a metric to tackle localization error in cascading scenarios. Second, we propose an advanced two-step TOA method based on CRLB which is able to approximate target node's CRLB with only local neighbor information. Finally, simulation results confirm the robustness of our algorithm, achieving CRLB-level accuracy for small ranging errors and maintaining precision for larger errors compared to existing TOA methods.

High Throughput Inter-Layer Connecting Strategy for Multi-Layer Ultra-Dense Satellite Networks

Multi-layer ultra-dense satellite networks (MLUDSNs) have soared this meteoric to provide vast throughputd for globally diverse services. Differing from traditional monolayer constellations, MLUDSNs emphasize the spatial integration among layers, and its throughput may not be simply the sum of throughput of each layer. The hop-count of cross-layer communication paths can be reduced by deploying inter-layer connections (ILCs), augmenting MLUDSN's throughput. Therefore, it remains an open issue how to deploy ILCs to optimize the dynamic MLUDSN topology to dramatically raise throughput gains under multi-layer collaboration. This paper designs an ILC deployment strategy to enhance throughput by revealing the impacts of ILC distribution on reducing hop-count. Since deploying ILCs burdens the satellite with extra communication resource consumption, we model the ILC deployment problem as minimizing the average hop with limited ILCs, to maximize throughput. The proposed problem is a typical integer linear programming (ILP) problem, of which computational complexity is exponential as the satellite scale expands and the time evolves. Based on the symmetrical topology of each layer, we propose a two-phase deployment scheme to halve the problem scale and prioritize stable ILCs to reduce handover-count, which decreases the exponential complexity to a polynomial one, with 1% estimation error: Simulation results based on realistic megaconstellation information confirm that the optimal number of ILCs is less than P.S/2, where P and S are orbits and satellites per orbit. Besides, these ILCs deploy uniformly in each layer, which raises over 1.55x throughput than isolated layers.

Inter-domain Resource Collaboration in Satellite Networks: An Intelligent Scheduling Approach Towards Hybrid Missions

Since the next-generation satellite network consisting of various service function domains, such as communication, observation, navigation, etc., is moving towards large-scale, using single-domain resources is difficult to provide satisfied and timely service guarantees for the rapidly increasing mission demands of each domain. Breaking the barriers of independence of resources in each domain, and realizing the cross-domain transmission of missions to efficiently collaborate inter-domain resources is a promising solution. However, the hybrid scheduling of different missions and the continuous increase in the number of service domains have strengthened the differences and dynamics of mission demands, making it challenging for an efficient cross-domain mission scheduling (CMS). To this end, this paper first accurately characterizes the communication resource state of inter-satellite in real-time exploiting the sparse resource representation scheme, and systematically characterizes the differentiation of mission demands by conducting the mission priority model. Based on the information of resources and missions, we construct the top- and bottom-layer mission scheduling models of reward association exploiting the correlation of intra- and inter-domain mission scheduling and formulate the Markov decision process-based hierarchical CMS problem. Further, to achieve higher adaptability and autonomy of CMS and efficiently mitigate the impact of network scale, a hierarchical intelligent CMS algorithm is developed to dynamically adjust and efficiently match the CMS policy according to different mission demands. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has significant performance gain compared with independent domains and the existing CMS algorithms, and can still guarantee high service performance under different network scales.

Digital twin has revolutionized optical communication networks by enabling their full life-cycle management, including design, troubleshooting, optimization, upgrade, and prediction. While extensive literature exists on frameworks, standards, and applications of digital twin, there is a pressing need in implementing digital twin in field-deployed optical networks operating in real-world environments, as opposed to controlled laboratory settings. This paper addresses this challenge by examining the uncertain factors behind the inaccuracy of digital twin in field-deployed optical networks from three main challenges and proposing operational guidance for implementing accurate digital twin in field-deployed optical networks. Through the proposed guidance, we demonstrate the effective implementation of digital twin in a field-trial C+L-band optical transmission link, showcasing its capabilities in performance recovery in a fiber cut scenario.

Human-Machine Cooperative Multimodal Learning Method for Cross-subject Olfactory Preference Recognition

Odor sensory evaluation has a broad application in food, clothing, cosmetics, and other fields. Traditional artificial sensory evaluation has poor repeatability, and the machine olfaction represented by the electronic nose (E-nose) is difficult to reflect human feelings. Olfactory electroencephalogram (EEG) contains odor and individual features associated with human olfactory preference, which has unique advantages in odor sensory evaluation. However, the difficulty of cross-subject olfactory EEG recognition greatly limits its application. It is worth noting that E-nose and olfactory EEG are more advantageous in representing odor information and individual emotions, respectively. In this paper, an E-nose and olfactory EEG multimodal learning method is proposed for cross-subject olfactory preference recognition. Firstly, the olfactory EEG and E-nose multimodal data acquisition and preprocessing paradigms are established. Secondly, a complementary multimodal data mining strategy is proposed to effectively mine the common features of multimodal data representing odor information and the individual features in olfactory EEG representing individual emotional information. Finally, the cross-subject olfactory preference recognition is achieved in 24 subjects by fusing the extracted common and individual features, and the recognition effect is superior to the state-of-the-art recognition methods. Furthermore, the advantages of the proposed method in cross-subject olfactory preference recognition indicate its potential for practical odor evaluation applications.

Decoding Taste Information in Human Brain: A Temporal and Spatial Reconstruction Data Augmentation Method Coupled with Taste EEG

For humans, taste is essential for perceiving food's nutrient content or harmful components. The current sensory evaluation of taste mainly relies on artificial sensory evaluation and electronic tongue, but the former has strong subjectivity and poor repeatability, and the latter is not flexible enough. This work proposed a strategy for acquiring and recognizing taste electroencephalogram (EEG), aiming to decode people's objective perception of taste through taste EEG. Firstly, according to the proposed experimental paradigm, the taste EEG of subjects under different taste stimulation was collected. Secondly, to avoid insufficient training of the model due to the small number of taste EEG samples, a Temporal and Spatial Reconstruction Data Augmentation (TSRDA) method was proposed, which effectively augmented the taste EEG by reconstructing the taste EEG's important features in temporal and spatial dimensions. Thirdly, a multi-view channel attention module was introduced into a designed convolutional neural network to extract the important features of the augmented taste EEG. The proposed method has accuracy of 99.56%, F1-score of 99.48%, and kappa of 99.38%, proving the method's ability to distinguish the taste EEG evoked by different taste stimuli successfully. In summary, combining TSRDA with taste EEG technology provides an objective and effective method for sensory evaluation of food taste.

Detect Depression from Social Networks with Sentiment Knowledge Sharing

Social network plays an important role in propagating people's viewpoints, emotions, thoughts, and fears. Notably, following lockdown periods during the COVID-19 pandemic, the issue of depression has garnered increasing attention, with a significant portion of individuals resorting to social networks as an outlet for expressing emotions. Using deep learning techniques to discern potential signs of depression from social network messages facilitates the early identification of mental health conditions. Current efforts in detecting depression through social networks typically rely solely on analyzing the textual content, overlooking other potential information. In this work, we conduct a thorough investigation that unveils a strong correlation between depression and negative emotional states. The integration of such associations as external knowledge can provide valuable insights for detecting depression. Accordingly, we propose a multi-task training framework, DeSK, which utilizes shared sentiment knowledge to enhance the efficacy of depression detection. Experiments conducted on both Chinese and English datasets demonstrate the cross-lingual effectiveness of DeSK.

Experimental and numerical investigation on folding stable state of bistable deployable composite boom

The bistable deployable composite boom (Bi-DCB) can realize the bistable function by storing and releasing strain energy, which has a good application prospect in the aerospace field. In this paper, the folding stable state of the Bi-DCB was investigated using experimental and numerical approaches. Using the vacuum bag method, six Bi-DCB specimens were prepared. Bistable experiments of Bi-DCB specimens were conducted and linear fitting with Archimedes' helix was performed to determine the folding stable configuration. In addition, two Finite Element Models (FEMs) were established for predicting the folding stable state of the Bi-DCB. Two classical failure criteria were utilized to analyze the stress level of the folding stable state of the Bi-DCB. Numerical results of two FEMs agreed well with experimental results, including the bistable deformation process and the folding stable state.

ClusterGNN: Cluster-based Coarse-to-Fine Graph Neural Network for Efficient Feature Matching

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) with attention have been successfully applied for learning visual feature matching. However, current methods learn with complete graphs, resulting in a quadratic complexity in the number of features. Motivated by a prior observation that self- and cross- attention matrices converge to a sparse representation, we propose ClusterGNN, an attentional GNN architecture which operates on clusters for learning the feature matching task. Using a progressive clustering module we adaptively divide keypoints into different subgraphs to reduce redundant connectivity, and employ a coarse-to-fine paradigm for mitigating miss-classification within images. Our approach yields a 59.7% reduction in runtime and 58.4% reduction in memory consumption for dense detection, compared to current state-of-the-art GNN-based matching, while achieving a competitive performance on various computer vision tasks.

Vetaverse: A Survey on the Intersection of Metaverse, Vehicles, and Transportation Systems

Since 2021, the term "Metaverse" has been the most popular one, garnering a lot of interest. Because of its contained environment and built-in computing and networking capabilities, a modern car makes an intriguing location to host its own little metaverse. Additionally, the travellers don't have much to do to pass the time while traveling, making them ideal customers for immersive services. Vetaverse (Vehicular-Metaverse), which we define as the future continuum between vehicular industries and Metaverse, is envisioned as a blended immersive realm that scales up to cities and countries, as digital twins of the intelligent Transportation Systems, referred to as "TS-Metaverse", as well as customized XR services inside each Individual Vehicle, referred to as "IV-Metaverse". The two subcategories serve fundamentally different purposes, namely long-term interconnection, maintenance, monitoring, and management on scale for large transportation systems (TS), and personalized, private, and immersive infotainment services (IV). By outlining the framework of Vetaverse and examining important enabler technologies, we reveal this impending trend. Additionally, we examine unresolved issues and potential routes for future study while highlighting some intriguing Vetaverse services.

Color Segmentation on FPGA Using Minimum Distance Classifier for Automatic Road Sign Detection

Classification is an important step in machine vision systems; it reveals the true identity of an object using features extracted in pre-processing steps. Practical usage requires the operation to be fast, energy efficient and easy to implement. In this paper, we present a design of the Minimum Distance Classifier based on an FPGA platform. It is optimized by the pipelined structure to strike a balance between device utilization and computational speed. In addition, the dimension of the feature space is modeled as a generic parameter, making it possible for the design to re-generate hardware to cope with feature space with arbitrary dimensions. Its primary application is demonstrated in color segmentation on FPGA in the form of efficient classification using color as a feature. This result is further extended by introducing a multi-class component labeling module to label the segmented color components and measure their geometric properties. The combination of these two modules can effectively detect road signs as the region of interests.
