Knowledge-aware Pronoun Coreference Resolution

Resolving pronoun coreference requires knowledge support, especially for particular domains (e.g., medicine). In this paper, we explore how to leverage different types of knowledge to better resolve pronoun coreference with a neural model. To ensure the generalization ability of our model, we directly incorporate knowledge in the format of triplets, which is the most common format of modern knowledge graphs, instead of encoding it with features or rules as that in conventional approaches. Moreover, since not all knowledge is helpful in certain contexts, to selectively use them, we propose a knowledge attention module, which learns to select and use informative knowledge based on contexts, to enhance our model. Experimental results on two datasets from different domains prove the validity and effectiveness of our model, where it outperforms state-of-the-art baselines by a large margin. Moreover, since our model learns to use external knowledge rather than only fitting the training data, it also demonstrates superior performance to baselines in the cross-domain setting.

Learning Word Embeddings with Domain Awareness

Word embeddings are traditionally trained on a large corpus in an unsupervised setting, with no specific design for incorporating domain knowledge. This can lead to unsatisfactory performances when training data originate from heterogeneous domains. In this paper, we propose two novel mechanisms for domain-aware word embedding training, namely domain indicator and domain attention, which integrate domain-specific knowledge into the widely used SG and CBOW models, respectively. The two methods are based on a joint learning paradigm and ensure that words in a target domain are intensively focused when trained on a source domain corpus. Qualitative and quantitative evaluation confirm the validity and effectiveness of our models. Compared to baseline methods, our method is particularly effective in near-cold-start scenarios.

Weak cosmic censorship in Born-Infeld electrodynamics and bound on charge-to-mass ratio

We construct a class of counterexamples to cosmic censorship in four dimensional Einstein-Born-Infeld theory with asymptotically anti-de Sitter boundary conditions, and investigate the effect of the Born-Infeld parameter $b$ in comparison with the counterpart of Einstein-Maxwell theory. When a charged massive scalar field is included into the action, we find that this class of counterexamples to cosmic censorship would be removed if the charge of scalar fields is above the minimum value of charge $q_{min}$. In particular, the minimum value of charge required to preserve cosmic censorship increases with the increasing of Born-Infeld parameter. Meanwhile, we also show the lower bounds on charge-to-mass ratio with the different values of Born-Infeld parameter.

Iterative Document Representation Learning Towards Summarization with Polishing

In this paper, we introduce Iterative Text Summarization (ITS), an iteration-based model for supervised extractive text summarization, inspired by the observation that it is often necessary for a human to read an article multiple times in order to fully understand and summarize its contents. Current summarization approaches read through a document only once to generate a document representation, resulting in a sub-optimal representation. To address this issue we introduce a model which iteratively polishes the document representation on many passes through the document. As part of our model, we also introduce a selective reading mechanism that decides more accurately the extent to which each sentence in the model should be updated. Experimental results on the CNN/DailyMail and DUC2002 datasets demonstrate that our model significantly outperforms state-of-the-art extractive systems when evaluated by machines and by humans.

Incorporating Context and External Knowledge for Pronoun Coreference Resolution

Linking pronominal expressions to the correct references requires, in many cases, better analysis of the contextual information and external knowledge. In this paper, we propose a two-layer model for pronoun coreference resolution that leverages both context and external knowledge, where a knowledge attention mechanism is designed to ensure the model leveraging the appropriate source of external knowledge based on different context. Experimental results demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of our model, where it outperforms state-of-the-art models by a large margin.

Topic Memory Networks for Short Text Classification

Many classification models work poorly on short texts due to data sparsity. To address this issue, we propose topic memory networks for short text classification with a novel topic memory mechanism to encode latent topic representations indicative of class labels. Different from most prior work that focuses on extending features with external knowledge or pre-trained topics, our model jointly explores topic inference and text classification with memory networks in an end-to-end manner. Experimental results on four benchmark datasets show that our model outperforms state-of-the-art models on short text classification, meanwhile generates coherent topics.

A Joint Model of Conversational Discourse and Latent Topics on Microblogs

Conventional topic models are ineffective for topic extraction from microblog messages, because the data sparseness exhibited in short messages lacking structure and contexts results in poor message-level word co-occurrence patterns. To address this issue, we organize microblog messages as conversation trees based on their reposting and replying relations, and propose an unsupervised model that jointly learns word distributions to represent: 1) different roles of conversational discourse, 2) various latent topics in reflecting content information. By explicitly distinguishing the probabilities of messages with varying discourse roles in containing topical words, our model is able to discover clusters of discourse words that are indicative of topical content. In an automatic evaluation on large-scale microblog corpora, our joint model yields topics with better coherence scores than competitive topic models from previous studies. Qualitative analysis on model outputs indicates that our model induces meaningful representations for both discourse and topics. We further present an empirical study on microblog summarization based on the outputs of our joint model. The results show that the jointly modeled discourse and topic representations can effectively indicate summary-worthy content in microblog conversations.

A Capsule based Approach for Polyphonic Sound Event Detection

Polyphonic sound event detection (polyphonic SED) is an interesting but challenging task due to the concurrence of multiple sound events. Recently, SED methods based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) and recurrent neural networks (RNN) have shown promising performance. Generally, CNN are designed for local feature extraction while RNN are used to model the temporal dependency among these local features. Despite their success, it is still insufficient for existing deep learning techniques to separate individual sound event from their mixture, largely due to the overlapping characteristic of features. Motivated by the success of Capsule Networks (CapsNet), we propose a more suitable capsule based approach for polyphonic SED. Specifically, several capsule layers are designed to effectively select representative frequency bands for each individual sound event. The temporal dependency of capsule's outputs is then modeled by a RNN. And a dynamic threshold method is proposed for making the final decision based on RNN outputs. Experiments on the TUT-SED Synthetic 2016 dataset show that the proposed approach obtains an F1-score of 68.8% and an error rate of 0.45, outperforming the previous state-of-the-art method of 66.4% and 0.48, respectively.

A Manually Annotated Chinese Corpus for Non-task-oriented Dialogue Systems

This paper presents a large-scale corpus for non-task-oriented dialogue response selection, which contains over 27K distinct prompts more than 82K responses collected from social media. To annotate this corpus, we define a 5-grade rating scheme: bad, mediocre, acceptable, good, and excellent, according to the relevance, coherence, informativeness, interestingness, and the potential to move a conversation forward. To test the validity and usefulness of the produced corpus, we compare various unsupervised and supervised models for response selection. Experimental results confirm that the proposed corpus is helpful in training response selection models.

hyperdoc2vec: Distributed Representations of Hypertext Documents

Hypertext documents, such as web pages and academic papers, are of great importance in delivering information in our daily life. Although being effective on plain documents, conventional text embedding methods suffer from information loss if directly adapted to hyper-documents. In this paper, we propose a general embedding approach for hyper-documents, namely, hyperdoc2vec, along with four criteria characterizing necessary information that hyper-document embedding models should preserve. Systematic comparisons are conducted between hyperdoc2vec and several competitors on two tasks, i.e., paper classification and citation recommendation, in the academic paper domain. Analyses and experiments both validate the superiority of hyperdoc2vec to other models w.r.t. the four criteria.
