Prediction of dual quantum spin Hall insulator in NbIrTe$_4$ monolayer

Dual quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) is a newly discovered topological state in the 2D material TaIrTe$_4$, exhibiting both a traditional $Z_2$ band gap at charge neutrality point and a van Hove singularity (VHS) induced correlated $Z_2$ band gap with weak doping. Inspired by the recent progress in theoretical understanding and experimental measurements, we predicted a promising dual QSHI in the counterpart material of the NbIrTe4 monolayer by first-principles calculations. In addition to the well-known band inversion at the charge neutrality point, two new band inversions were found after CDW phase transition when the chemical potential is near the VHS, one direct and one indirect $Z_2$ band gap. The VHS-induced non-trivial band gap is around 10 meV, much larger than that from TaIrTe$_4$. Furthermore, since the new generated band gap is mainly dominated by the $4d$ orbitals of Nb, electronic correlation effects should be relatively stronger in NbIrTe$_4$ as compared to TaIrTe$_4$. Therefore, the dual QSHI state in the NbIrTe$_4$ monolayer is expected to be a good platform for investigating the interplay between topology and correlation effects.

WEITS: A Wavelet-enhanced residual framework for interpretable time series forecasting

Time series (TS) forecasting has been an unprecedentedly popular problem in recent years, with ubiquitous applications in both scientific and business fields. Various approaches have been introduced to time series analysis, including both statistical approaches and deep neural networks. Although neural network approaches have illustrated stronger ability of representation than statistical methods, they struggle to provide sufficient interpretablility, and can be too complicated to optimize. In this paper, we present WEITS, a frequency-aware deep learning framework that is highly interpretable and computationally efficient. Through multi-level wavelet decomposition, WEITS novelly infuses frequency analysis into a highly deep learning framework. Combined with a forward-backward residual architecture, it enjoys both high representation capability and statistical interpretability. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets have demonstrated competitive performance of our model, along with its additional advantage of high computation efficiency. Furthermore, WEITS provides a general framework that can always seamlessly integrate with state-of-the-art approaches for time series forecast.

Distribution and Properties of Molecular Gas Toward the Monoceros OB1 Region

We perform a comprehensive CO study toward the Monoceros OB1 (Mon OB1) region based on the MWISP survey at an angular resolution of about $50''$. The high-sensitivity data, together with the high dynamic range, shows that molecular gas in the $\rm 8^{\circ}\times4^{\circ}$ region displays complicated hierarchical structures and various morphology (e.g., filamentary, cavity-like, shell-like, and other irregular structures). Based on Gaussian decomposition and clustering for $\mathrm{^{13}CO}$ data, a total of 263 $\mathrm{^{13}CO}$ structures are identified in the whole region, and 88% of raw data flux is recovered. The dense gas with relatively high column density from the integrated CO emission is mainly concentrated in the region where multiple $\rm ^{13}CO$ structures are overlapped. Combining the results of 32 large $\mathrm{^{13}CO}$ structures with distances from Gaia DR3, we estimate an average distance of $\rm 729^{+45}_{-45}~pc$ for the GMC complex. The total mass of the GMC Complex traced by $\mathrm{^{12}CO}$, $\mathrm{^{13}CO}$, and $\mathrm{C^{18}O}$ are $1.1\times10^5~M_\odot$, $4.3\times10^4~M_\odot$, and $8.4\times10^3~M_\odot$, respectively. The dense gas fraction shows a clear difference between Mon OB1 GMC East (12.4%) and Mon OB1 GMC West (3.3%). Our results show that the dense gas environment is closely linked to the nearby star-forming regions. On the other hand, star-forming activities have a great influence on the physical properties of the surrounding molecular gas (e.g., greater velocity dispersion, higher temperatures, and more complex velocity structures, etc.). We also discuss the distribution/kinematics of molecular gas associated with nearby star-forming activities.

On the Flux-Intensity Relation of Molecular Clouds

In this work, we report a study on the relationship between flux and intensity for molecular clouds. Our analysis is established on high-quality CO images from the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) project. The new flux-intensity relation characterizes the flux variation of molecular clouds above specific intensity levels. We found that the flux-intensity relation exhibits two prominent features. First, the flux-intensity relation generally follows exponential shapes; secondly, hierarchical structures of molecular clouds are imprinted on flux-intensity relations. Specifically, 12CO flux-intensity relations are composed of one or more exponential segments, and for molecular clouds with segmented flux-intensity relations, the edge and the flux of the high-temperature component are strikingly consistent with 13CO emission. Further analysis shows that a similar relationship also exists between 13CO flux-intensity relations and C18O emission. The mean brightness temperature of molecular clouds is tightly associated with the decay rate of flux, the break temperature of exponential segments, and, to a certain extent, the flux fraction of the high-temperature component. Broadly, the flux-intensity relation of a molecular tracer, either in optically thick or in optically thin cases, has the capability to outline the silhouette of internal structures of molecular clouds, proving to be a potent tool for probing structures of molecular clouds.

Deep Orthogonal Hypersphere Compression for Anomaly Detection

Many well-known and effective anomaly detection methods assume that a reasonable decision boundary has a hypersphere shape, which however is difficult to obtain in practice and is not sufficiently compact, especially when the data are in high-dimensional spaces. In this paper, we first propose a novel deep anomaly detection model that improves the original hypersphere learning through an orthogonal projection layer, which ensures that the training data distribution is consistent with the hypersphere hypothesis, thereby increasing the true positive rate and decreasing the false negative rate. Moreover, we propose a bi-hypersphere compression method to obtain a hyperspherical shell that yields a more compact decision region than a hyperball, which is demonstrated theoretically and numerically. The proposed methods are not confined to common datasets such as image and tabular data, but are also extended to a more challenging but promising scenario, graph-level anomaly detection, which learns graph representation with maximum mutual information between the substructure and global structure features while exploring orthogonal single- or bi-hypersphere anomaly decision boundaries. The numerical and visualization results on benchmark datasets demonstrate the superiority of our methods in comparison to many baselines and state-of-the-art methods.

The Multilayer Nature of Molecular Gas toward the Cygnus Region

We study the physical properties and 3D distribution of molecular clouds (MCs) toward the Cygnus region using the MWISP CO survey and Gaia DR3 data. Based on Gaussian decomposition and clustering for $\rm ^{13}CO$ lines, over 70% of the fluxes are recovered. With the identification result of $\rm ^{13}CO$ structures, two models are designed to measure the distances of the molecular gas in velocity crowding regions. The distances of more than 200 large $\rm ^{13}CO$ structures are obtained toward the 150 square degree region. Additionally, tens of the identified MC structures coincide well with masers and/or intense mid-IR emission. We find multiple gas layers toward the region: (1) the extensive gas structures composing the Cygnus Rift from 700 pc to 1 kpc across the whole region; (2) the $\sim$ 1.3 kpc gas layer mainly in the Cygnus X South region; and (3) the 1.5 kpc dense filament at the Cygnus X North region and many cometary clouds shaped by Cygnus OB2. We also note that the spatial distribution of YSO candidates is generally consistent with the molecular gas structures. The total molecular mass of the Cygnus region is estimated to be $\sim 2.7\times10^{6}~M_{\odot}$ assuming an X-factor ratio $X_{\rm CO} = 2 \times 10^{20} \rm cm^{-2} (K\cdot km\cdot s^{-1})^{-1}$. The foreground Cygnus Rift contributes $\sim$25% of the molecular mass in the whole region. Our work presents a new 3D view of the MCs' distribution toward the Cygnus X region, as well as the exact molecular gas mass distribution in the foreground Cygnus Rift.

Switchable quantized signal between longitudinal conductance and Hall conductance in dual quantum spin Hall insulator TaIrTe$_4$

Topological insulating states in two-dimensional (2D) materials are ideal systems to study different types of quantized response signals due to their in gap metallic states. Very recently, the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect was discovered in monolayer $\text{TaIrTe}_4$ via the observation of quantized longitudinal conductance that rarely exists in other 2D topological insulators. The non-trivial $Z_2$ topological charges can exist at both charge neutrality point and the van Hove singularity point with correlation effect induced band gap. Based on this model 2D material, we studied the switch of quantized signals between longitudinal conductance and transversal Hall conductance via tuning external magnetic field. In $Z_2$ topological phase of monolayer $\text{TaIrTe}_4$, the zero Chern number can be understood as 1-1=0 from the double band inversion from spin-up and spin-down channels. After applying a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane, the Zeeman split changes the band order for one branch of the band inversion from spin-up and spin-down channels, along with a sign charge of the Berry phase. Then the net Chern number of 1-1=0 is tuned to 1+1=2 or -1-1=-2 depending on the orientation of the magnetic field. The quantized signal not only provides another effective method for the verification of topological state in monolayer $\text{TaIrTe}_4$, but also offers a strategy for the utilization of the new quantum topological states based on switchable quantized responses.

Layer-by-layer phase transformation in Ti$_3$O$_5$ revealed by machine learning molecular dynamics simulations

Reconstructive phase transitions involving breaking and reconstruction of primary chemical bonds are ubiquitous and important for many technological applications. In contrast to displacive phase transitions, the dynamics of reconstructive phase transitions are usually slow due to the large energy barrier. Nevertheless, the reconstructive phase transformation from $β$- to $λ$-Ti$_3$O$_5$ exhibits an ultrafast and reversible behavior. Despite extensive studies, the underlying microscopic mechanism remains unclear. Here, we discover a kinetically favorable in-plane nucleated layer-by-layer transformation mechanism through metadynamics and large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. This is enabled by developing an efficient machine learning potential with near first-principles accuracy through an on-the-fly active learning method and an advanced sampling technique. Our results reveal that the $β$-$λ$ phase transformation initiates with the formation of two-dimensional nuclei in the $ab$-plane and then proceeds layer-by-layer through a multistep barrier-lowering kinetic process via intermediate metastable phases. Our work not only provides important insight into the ultrafast and reversible nature of the $β$-$λ$ transition, but also presents useful strategies and methods for tackling other complex structural phase transitions.

Dynamic Regularized Sharpness Aware Minimization in Federated Learning: Approaching Global Consistency and Smooth Landscape

In federated learning (FL), a cluster of local clients are chaired under the coordination of the global server and cooperatively train one model with privacy protection. Due to the multiple local updates and the isolated non-iid dataset, clients are prone to overfit into their own optima, which extremely deviates from the global objective and significantly undermines the performance. Most previous works only focus on enhancing the consistency between the local and global objectives to alleviate this prejudicial client drifts from the perspective of the optimization view, whose performance would be prominently deteriorated on the high heterogeneity. In this work, we propose a novel and general algorithm {\ttfamily FedSMOO} by jointly considering the optimization and generalization targets to efficiently improve the performance in FL. Concretely, {\ttfamily FedSMOO} adopts a dynamic regularizer to guarantee the local optima towards the global objective, which is meanwhile revised by the global Sharpness Aware Minimization (SAM) optimizer to search for the consistent flat minima. Our theoretical analysis indicates that {\ttfamily FedSMOO} achieves fast $\mathcal{O}(1/T)$ convergence rate with low generalization bound. Extensive numerical studies are conducted on the real-world dataset to verify its peerless efficiency and excellent generality.

VLBI Astrometry of Radio Stars to Link Radio and Optical Celestial Reference Frames: Observing Strategies

The Gaia celestial reference frame (Gaia-CRF) will benefit from a close assessment with independent methods, such as Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) measurements of radio stars at bright magnitudes. However, obtaining full astrometric parameters for each radio star through VLBI measurements demands a significant amount of observation time. This study proposes an efficient observing strategy that acquires double-epoch VLBI positions to measure the positions and proper motions of radio stars at a reduced cost. The solution for CRF link compatible with individual VLBI position measurements is introduced, and the optimized observing epoch scheduling is discussed. Applying this solution to observational data yields results sensitive to sample increase or decrease, yet they remain consistently in line with the literature at the 1-sigma level. This suggests the potential for improvement with a larger sample size. Simulations for adding observations demonstrate the double-epoch strategy reduces CRF link parameter uncertainties by over 30% compared to the five-parameter strategy.

Relative velocities between $^{13}$CO structures within $^{12}$CO Molecular clouds

Velocity fields of molecular clouds (MCs) can provide crucial information on the merger and split between clouds, as well as their internal kinematics and maintenance, energy injection and redistribution, even star formation within clouds. Using the CO spectral lines data from the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) survey, we measure the relative velocities along the line of sight ($Δ$V$_{\rm LOS}$) between $^{13}$CO structures within $^{12}$CO MCs. Emphasizing MCs with double and triple $^{13}$CO structures, we find that approximately 70$\%$ of $Δ$V$_{\rm LOS}$ values are less than $\sim$ 1 km s$^{-1}$, and roughly 10$\%$ of values exceed 2 km s$^{-1}$, with a maximum of $\sim$ 5 km s$^{-1}$. Additionally, we compare $Δ$V$_{\rm LOS}$ with the internal velocity dispersion of $^{13}$CO structures ($σ_{\rm ^{13}CO,in}$) and find that about 40$\%$ of samples in either double or triple regime display distinct velocity discontinuities, i.e. the relative velocities between $^{13}$CO structures are larger than the internal linewidths of $^{13}$CO structures. Among these 40$\%$ samples in the triple regime, 33$\%$ exhibit signatures of combinations through the two-body motion, whereas the remaining 7$\%$ show features of configurations through the multiple-body motion. The $Δ$V$_{\rm LOS}$ distributions for MCs with double and triple $^{13}$CO structures are similar, as well as their $Δ$V$_{\rm LOS}$/$σ_{\rm ^{13}CO,in}$ distributions. This suggests that relative motions of $^{13}$CO structures within MCs are random and independent of cloud complexities and scales.

GaitASMS: Gait Recognition by Adaptive Structured Spatial Representation and Multi-Scale Temporal Aggregation

Gait recognition is one of the most promising video-based biometric technologies. The edge of silhouettes and motion are the most informative feature and previous studies have explored them separately and achieved notable results. However, due to occlusions and variations in viewing angles, their gait recognition performance is often affected by the predefined spatial segmentation strategy. Moreover, traditional temporal pooling usually neglects distinctive temporal information in gait. To address the aforementioned issues, we propose a novel gait recognition framework, denoted as GaitASMS, which can effectively extract the adaptive structured spatial representations and naturally aggregate the multi-scale temporal information. The Adaptive Structured Representation Extraction Module (ASRE) separates the edge of silhouettes by using the adaptive edge mask and maximizes the representation in semantic latent space. Moreover, the Multi-Scale Temporal Aggregation Module (MSTA) achieves effective modeling of long-short-range temporal information by temporally aggregated structure. Furthermore, we propose a new data augmentation, denoted random mask, to enrich the sample space of long-term occlusion and enhance the generalization of the model. Extensive experiments conducted on two datasets demonstrate the competitive advantage of proposed method, especially in complex scenes, i.e. BG and CL. On the CASIA-B dataset, GaitASMS achieves the average accuracy of 93.5\% and outperforms the baseline on rank-1 accuracies by 3.4\% and 6.3\%, respectively, in BG and CL. The ablation experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of ASRE and MSTA. The source code is available at https://github.com/YanSungithub/GaitASMS.

Nonlinear optics driven magnetism reorientation in semiconductors

Based on nonlinear optics, we develop a band theory to elucidate how light could manipulate magnetization, which is rooted by the quantum geometric structure and topological nature of electronic wavefunctions. Their existence are determined by the light polarization and specific material symmetry, based on the magnetic group theory. In general, both circularly and linearly polarized light could exert an effective magnetic field and torque effect, to reorient the magnetization. They are contributed by spin and orbital angular momenta simultaneously. Aided by group theory and first-principles calculations, we illustrate this theory using a showcase example of monolayer NiCl2, showing that light irradiation effectively generates an out-of-plane effective magnetic torque, which lifts its in-plane easy magnetization. According to magnetic dynamic simulations, the in-plane magnetization could be switched to the out-of-plane direction in a few nanoseconds under a modest light intensity, demonstrating its ultrafast nature desirable for quantum manipulation.

Quantum Transport and Spectroscopy of Two-dimensional Perovskite/Graphene Interfaces

Quantum transport properties in molecularly thin perovskite/graphene heterostructure are experimentally investigated by Shubnikov-de Hass (SdH) oscillation and photo-resistance spectroscopy. We find an efficient charge transfer between the perovskite nanosheets and graphene, with a high hole concentration in graphene of up to $\rm \sim 2.8 \times 10^{13}\ cm^{-2}$. The perovskite layer also increases Fermi velocity lowering the effective mass of graphene from expected $\rm \sim 0.12\ m_e$ to $\rm \sim 0.08\ m_e$. Combining magneto-resistance and density functional theory calculations, we find that the carrier density in graphene significantly depends on the perovskite termination at the interface, affecting the charge transfer process and leading to a coexistence of regions with different doping. We also investigate the photo-response of the SdH oscillation under illumination. Using photo-resistance spectroscopy, we find evidence of photo-assisted transport across the perovskite layer between two graphene electrodes mediated by hot carriers in perovskite. Our results provide a picture to understand the transport behavior of 2D perovskite/graphene heterostructure and a reference for the controlled design of interfaces in perovskite optoelectronic devices.

An improved method to measure $\rm ^{12}C/^{13}C$ and $\rm ^{14}N/^{15}N$ abundance ratios: revisiting CN isotopologues in the Galactic outer disk

The variations of elemental abundance and their ratios along the Galactocentric radius result from the chemical evolution of the Milky Way disks. The $\rm ^{12}C/^{13}C$ ratio in particular is often used as a proxy to determine other isotopic ratios, such as $\rm ^{16}O/^{18}O$ and $\rm ^{14}N/^{15}N$. Measurements of $\rm ^{12}CN$ and $\rm ^{13}CN$ (or $\rm C^{15}N$) -- with their optical depths corrected via their hyper-fine structure lines -- have traditionally been exploited to constrain the Galactocentric gradients of the CNO isotopic ratios. Such methods typically make several simplifying assumptions (e.g. a filling factor of unity, the Rayleigh-Jeans approximation, and the neglect of the cosmic microwave background) while adopting a single average gas phase. However, these simplifications introduce significant biases to the measured $\rm ^{12}C/^{13}C$ and $\rm ^{14}N/^{15}N$. We demonstrate that exploiting the optically thin satellite lines of $\rm ^{12}CN$ constitutes a more reliable new method to derive $\rm ^{12}C/^{13}C$ and $\rm ^{14}N/^{15}N$ from CN isotopologues. We apply this satellite-line method to new IRAM 30-m observations of $\rm ^{12}CN$, $\rm ^{13}CN$, and $\rm C^{15}N$ $N=1\to0$ towards 15 metal-poor molecular clouds in the Galactic outer disk ($R_{\rm gc} > $ 12 kpc), supplemented by data from the literature. After updating their Galactocentric distances, we find that $\rm ^{12}C/^{13}C$ and $\rm ^{14}N/^{15}N$ gradients are in good agreement with those derived using independent optically thin molecular tracers, even in regions with the lowest metallicities. We therefore recommend using optically thin tracers for Galactic and extragalactic CNO isotopic measurements, which avoids the biases associated with the traditional method.

Cloud-cloud collision in S235: triggered the formation of high-mass stars and young star clusters

We present the analysis of cloud-cloud collision (CCC) process in the Galactic molecular complex S235. Our new CO observations performed with the PMO-13.7m telescope reveal two molecular clouds, namely the S235-Main and the S235-ABC, with $\sim$ 4 km s$^{-1}$ velocity separation. The bridge feature, the possible colliding interface and the complementary distribution of the two clouds are significant observational signatures of cloud-cloud collision in S235. The most direct evidence of cloud-cloud collision process in S235 is that the S235-Main (in a distance of 1547$^{+44}_{-43}$ pc) and S235-ABC (1567$^{+33}_{-39}$ pc) meet at almost the same position (within 1$σ$ error range) at a supersonic relative speed. We identified ten $^{13}$CO clumps from PMO-13.7m observations, 22 dust cores from the archival SCUBA-2 data, and 550 YSOs from NIR-MIR data. 63$\%$ of total YSOs are clustering in seven MST groups (M1$-$M7). The tight association between the YSO groups (M1 $\&$ M7) and the bridge feature suggests that the CCC process triggers star formation there. The collisional impact subregion (the South) shows $3\sim5$ times higher CFE and SFE (average value of 12.3$\%$ and 10.6$\%$, respectively) than the non-collisional impact subregion (2.4$\%$ and 2.6$\%$, respectively), suggesting that the CCC process may have enhanced the CFE and SFE of the clouds compared to those without collision influence.

Extremely large anomalous Hall conductivity and unusual axial diamagnetism in a quasi-1D Dirac material La$_3$MgBi$_5$

Anomalous Hall effect (AHE), one of the most important electronic transport phenomena, generally appears in ferromagnetic materials but is rare in materials without magnetic elements. Here, we present a study of La$_3$MgBi$_5$, whose band structure carries multitype Dirac fermions. Although magnetic elements are absent in La$_3$MgBi$_5$, clear signals of AHE can be observed. In particular, the anomalous Hall conductivity is extremely large, reaching 42,356 $Ω^{-1}$ cm$^{-1}$ with an anomalous Hall angle of 8.8 %, the largest one that has been observed in the current AHE systems. The AHE is suggested to originate from the combination of skew scattering and Berry curvature. Another unique property discovered in La$_3$MgBi$_5$ is the axial diamagnetism. The diamagnetism is significantly enhanced and dominates the magnetization in the axial directions, which is the result of restricted motion of the Dirac fermion at Fermi level. Our findings not only establish La$_3$MgBi$_5$ as a suitable platform to study AHE and quantum transport, but also indicate the great potential of 315-type Bi-based materials for exploring novel physical properties.
