Realization of all-optical higher-order spatial differentiators based on cascaded operations

Cascaded operations play an important role in traditional electronic computing systems for the realization of advanced strategies. Here, we introduce the idea of cascaded operations into all-optical spatial analog computing. The single function of the firstorder operation is difficult to meet the requirements of practical applications in image recognition. The all-optical second-order spatial differentiators are implemented by cascading two first-order differential operation units, and the image edge detection of amplitude and phase objects are demonstrated. Our scheme provides a possible pathway towards the development of compact multifunctional differentiators and advanced optical analog computing networks.

Penalized Projected Kernel Calibration for Computer Models

Projected kernel calibration is a newly proposed frequentist calibration method, which is asymptotic normal and semi-parametric. Its loss function is usually referred to as the PK loss function. In this work, we prove the uniform convergence of PK loss function and show that (1) when the sample size is large, any local minimum point and local maximum point of the $L_2$ loss between the true process and the computer model is a local minimum point of the PK loss function; (2) all the local minima of the PK loss function converge to the same value. These theoretical results imply that it is extremely hard for the projected kernel calibration to identify the global minimum of the $L_2$ loss, i.e. the optimal value of the calibration parameters. To solve this problem, a frequentist method which we term penalized projected kernel calibration method is suggested and analyzed in detail. We prove that the proposed method is as efficient as the projected kernel calibration method. Through an extensive set of numerical simulations, and a real-world case study, we show that the proposed calibration method can accurately estimate the calibration parameters. We also show that its performance compares favorably to other calibration methods regardless of the sample size.

Stochastic MPC with Dual Control for Autonomous Driving with Multi-Modal Interaction-Aware Predictions

We propose a Stochastic MPC (SMPC) approach for autonomous driving which incorporates multi-modal, interaction-aware predictions of surrounding vehicles. For each mode, vehicle motion predictions are obtained by a control model described using a basis of fixed features with unknown weights. The proposed SMPC formulation finds optimal controls which serves two purposes: 1) reducing conservatism of the SMPC by optimizing over parameterized control laws and 2) prediction and estimation of feature weights used in interaction-aware modeling using Kalman filtering. The proposed approach is demonstrated on a longitudinal control example, with uncertainties in predictions of the autonomous and surrounding vehicles.

Effidit: Your AI Writing Assistant

In this technical report, we introduce Effidit (Efficient and Intelligent Editing), a digital writing assistant that facilitates users to write higher-quality text more efficiently by using artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Previous writing assistants typically provide the function of error checking (to detect and correct spelling and grammatical errors) and limited text-rewriting functionality. With the emergence of large-scale neural language models, some systems support automatically completing a sentence or a paragraph. In Effidit, we significantly expand the capacities of a writing assistant by providing functions in five categories: text completion, error checking, text polishing, keywords to sentences (K2S), and cloud input methods (cloud IME). In the text completion category, Effidit supports generation-based sentence completion, retrieval-based sentence completion, and phrase completion. In contrast, many other writing assistants so far only provide one or two of the three functions. For text polishing, we have three functions: (context-aware) phrase polishing, sentence paraphrasing, and sentence expansion, whereas many other writing assistants often support one or two functions in this category. The main contents of this report include major modules of Effidit, methods for implementing these modules, and evaluation results of some key methods.

Ithaca365: Dataset and Driving Perception under Repeated and Challenging Weather Conditions

Advances in perception for self-driving cars have accelerated in recent years due to the availability of large-scale datasets, typically collected at specific locations and under nice weather conditions. Yet, to achieve the high safety requirement, these perceptual systems must operate robustly under a wide variety of weather conditions including snow and rain. In this paper, we present a new dataset to enable robust autonomous driving via a novel data collection process - data is repeatedly recorded along a 15 km route under diverse scene (urban, highway, rural, campus), weather (snow, rain, sun), time (day/night), and traffic conditions (pedestrians, cyclists and cars). The dataset includes images and point clouds from cameras and LiDAR sensors, along with high-precision GPS/INS to establish correspondence across routes. The dataset includes road and object annotations using amodal masks to capture partial occlusions and 3D bounding boxes. We demonstrate the uniqueness of this dataset by analyzing the performance of baselines in amodal segmentation of road and objects, depth estimation, and 3D object detection. The repeated routes opens new research directions in object discovery, continual learning, and anomaly detection. Link to Ithaca365: https://ithaca365.mae.cornell.edu/

Beyond CNNs: Exploiting Further Inherent Symmetries in Medical Image Segmentation

Automatic tumor or lesion segmentation is a crucial step in medical image analysis for computer-aided diagnosis. Although the existing methods based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have achieved the state-of-the-art performance, many challenges still remain in medical tumor segmentation. This is because, although the human visual system can detect symmetries in 2D images effectively, regular CNNs can only exploit translation invariance, overlooking further inherent symmetries existing in medical images such as rotations and reflections. To solve this problem, we propose a novel group equivariant segmentation framework by encoding those inherent symmetries for learning more precise representations. First, kernel-based equivariant operations are devised on each orientation, which allows it to effectively address the gaps of learning symmetries in existing approaches. Then, to keep segmentation networks globally equivariant, we design distinctive group layers with layer-wise symmetry constraints. Finally, based on our novel framework, extensive experiments conducted on real-world clinical data demonstrate that a Group Equivariant Res-UNet (named GER-UNet) outperforms its regular CNN-based counterpart and the state-of-the-art segmentation methods in the tasks of hepatic tumor segmentation, COVID-19 lung infection segmentation and retinal vessel detection. More importantly, the newly built GER-UNet also shows potential in reducing the sample complexity and the redundancy of filters, upgrading current segmentation CNNs and delineating organs on other medical imaging modalities.

Evaluating the Practicality of Learned Image Compression

Learned image compression has achieved extraordinary rate-distortion performance in PSNR and MS-SSIM compared to traditional methods. However, it suffers from intensive computation, which is intolerable for real-world applications and leads to its limited industrial application for now. In this paper, we introduce neural architecture search (NAS) to designing more efficient networks with lower latency, and leverage quantization to accelerate the inference process. Meanwhile, efforts in engineering like multi-threading and SIMD have been made to improve efficiency. Optimized using a hybrid loss of PSNR and MS-SSIM for better visual quality, we obtain much higher MS-SSIM than JPEG, JPEG XL and AVIF over all bit rates, and PSNR between that of JPEG XL and AVIF. Our software implementation of LIC achieves comparable or even faster inference speed compared to jpeg-turbo while being multiple times faster than JPEG XL and AVIF. Besides, our implementation of LIC reaches stunning throughput of 145 fps for encoding and 208 fps for decoding on a Tesla T4 GPU for 1080p images. On CPU, the latency of our implementation is comparable with JPEG XL.

Experimental evaluation of a silicone oil as an oxidation inhibitor for magnesium alloy under contact sliding at elevated temperatures

This paper experimentally investigated the effects of silicone oil on the tribological behaviour of AZ31B/86CrMoV7 contact pair under a pin-on-disk configuration. A commercial silicone oil was used as an oxidation inhibiter for the AZ31B at elevated temperatures to 300 oC. The wear mechanism of the contact pair was explored by SEM morphologies of worn surfaces. The analysis revealed that silicone oil can effectively minimize surface oxidation. Compared with dry sliding, silicone oil can considerably lower down the friction coefficient and specific wear rate. Under lubrication, the abrasive wear at a lower temperature can transit to the combined wear of abrasion, fatigue and adhesion when the temperature rises.

Improved Multi-Dimensional Bee Colony Algorithm for Airport Freight Station Scheduling

Due to the rapid increase of air cargo and postal transport volume, an efficient automated multi-dimensional warehouse with elevating transfer vehicles (ETVs) should be established and an effective scheduling strategy should be designed for improving the cargo handling efficiency. In this paper, artificial bee colony algorithm, which possesses strong global optimization ability and fewer parameters, is firstly introduced to simultaneously optimize the route of ETV and the assignment of entrances and exits. Moreover, for further improve the optimization performance of ABC, novel full-dimensional search strategy with parallelization, and random multi-dimensional search strategy are incorporated in the framework of ABC to improve the diversity of the population and the convergence speed respectively. Our proposed algorithms are evaluated on several benchmark functions, and then applied to solve the combinatorial optimization problem with multitask, multiple entrances and exits in air cargo terminal. The simulations show that the proposed algorithms can achieve much more desired performance than the traditional artificial bee colony algorithm at balancing the exploitation and exploration abilities.

A Correlation Information-based Spatiotemporal Network for Traffic Flow Forecasting

The technology of traffic flow forecasting plays an important role in intelligent transportation systems. Based on graph neural networks and attention mechanisms, most previous works utilize the transformer architecture to discover spatiotemporal dependencies and dynamic relationships. However, they have not considered correlation information among spatiotemporal sequences thoroughly. In this paper, based on the maximal information coefficient, we present two elaborate spatiotemporal representations, spatial correlation information (SCorr) and temporal correlation information (TCorr). Using SCorr, we propose a correlation information-based spatiotemporal network (CorrSTN) that includes a dynamic graph neural network component for integrating correlation information into spatial structure effectively and a multi-head attention component for modeling dynamic temporal dependencies accurately. Utilizing TCorr, we explore the correlation pattern among different periodic data to identify the most relevant data, and then design an efficient data selection scheme to further enhance model performance. The experimental results on the highway traffic flow (PEMS07 and PEMS08) and metro crowd flow (HZME inflow and outflow) datasets demonstrate that CorrSTN outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of predictive performance. In particular, on the HZME (outflow) dataset, our model makes significant improvements compared with the ASTGNN model by 12.7%, 14.4% and 27.4% in the metrics of MAE, RMSE and MAPE, respectively.

Weakly Supervised Video Salient Object Detection via Point Supervision

Video salient object detection models trained on pixel-wise dense annotation have achieved excellent performance, yet obtaining pixel-by-pixel annotated datasets is laborious. Several works attempt to use scribble annotations to mitigate this problem, but point supervision as a more labor-saving annotation method (even the most labor-saving method among manual annotation methods for dense prediction), has not been explored. In this paper, we propose a strong baseline model based on point supervision. To infer saliency maps with temporal information, we mine inter-frame complementary information from short-term and long-term perspectives, respectively. Specifically, we propose a hybrid token attention module, which mixes optical flow and image information from orthogonal directions, adaptively highlighting critical optical flow information (channel dimension) and critical token information (spatial dimension). To exploit long-term cues, we develop the Long-term Cross-Frame Attention module (LCFA), which assists the current frame in inferring salient objects based on multi-frame tokens. Furthermore, we label two point-supervised datasets, P-DAVIS and P-DAVSOD, by relabeling the DAVIS and the DAVSOD dataset. Experiments on the six benchmark datasets illustrate our method outperforms the previous state-of-the-art weakly supervised methods and even is comparable with some fully supervised approaches. Source code and datasets are available.

Tensor modules over Witt superalgebras

In this paper, we study the tensor module $P\otimes M$ over the Witt superalgebra $W_{m,n}^+$ (resp. $W_{m,n}$), where $P$ is a simple module over the Weyl superalgebra $K_{m,n}^+$ (resp. $K_{m,n}$) and $M$ is simple weight module over the general linear Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(m,n)$. We obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions for $P\otimes M$ to be simple, and determine all simple subquotient of $P\otimes M$ when it is not simple. All the work leads to completion of some classification problems on the weight representation theory of $W_{m,n}^+$ and $W_{m,n}$.

Weakly-Supervised Salient Object Detection Using Point Supervision

Current state-of-the-art saliency detection models rely heavily on large datasets of accurate pixel-wise annotations, but manually labeling pixels is time-consuming and labor-intensive. There are some weakly supervised methods developed for alleviating the problem, such as image label, bounding box label, and scribble label, while point label still has not been explored in this field. In this paper, we propose a novel weakly-supervised salient object detection method using point supervision. To infer the saliency map, we first design an adaptive masked flood filling algorithm to generate pseudo labels. Then we develop a transformer-based point-supervised saliency detection model to produce the first round of saliency maps. However, due to the sparseness of the label, the weakly supervised model tends to degenerate into a general foreground detection model. To address this issue, we propose a Non-Salient Suppression (NSS) method to optimize the erroneous saliency maps generated in the first round and leverage them for the second round of training. Moreover, we build a new point-supervised dataset (P-DUTS) by relabeling the DUTS dataset. In P-DUTS, there is only one labeled point for each salient object. Comprehensive experiments on five largest benchmark datasets demonstrate our method outperforms the previous state-of-the-art methods trained with the stronger supervision and even surpass several fully supervised state-of-the-art models. Multi-agent systems with CBF-based controllers -- collision avoidance and liveness from instability

Assuring system stability is typically a major control design objective. In this paper, we present a system where instability provides a crucial benefit. We consider multi-agent collision avoidance using Control Barrier Functions (CBF) and study trade-offs between safety and liveness -- the ability to reach a destination without large detours or gridlock. We compare two standard decentralized policies, with only the local (host) control available, to co-optimization policies (PCCA and CCS) where everyone's (virtual) control action is available. The co-optimization policies compute control for everyone even though they lack information about others' intentions. For comparison, we use a Centralized, full information policy as the benchmark. One contribution of this paper is proving feasibility for the Centralized, PCCA, and CCS policies. Monte Carlo simulations show that decentralized, host-only control policies and CCS lack liveness while the PCCA policy performs as well as the Centralized. Next, we explain the observed results by considering two agents negotiating the passing order through an intersection. We show that the structure and stability of the resulting equilibria correlates with the observed propensity to gridlock -- the policies with unstable equilibria avoid gridlocks while those with stable ones do not.

SHREC'22 Track: Sketch-Based 3D Shape Retrieval in the Wild

Sketch-based 3D shape retrieval (SBSR) is an important yet challenging task, which has drawn more and more attention in recent years. Existing approaches address the problem in a restricted setting, without appropriately simulating real application scenarios. To mimic the realistic setting, in this track, we adopt large-scale sketches drawn by amateurs of different levels of drawing skills, as well as a variety of 3D shapes including not only CAD models but also models scanned from real objects. We define two SBSR tasks and construct two benchmarks consisting of more than 46,000 CAD models, 1,700 realistic models, and 145,000 sketches in total. Four teams participated in this track and submitted 15 runs for the two tasks, evaluated by 7 commonly-adopted metrics. We hope that, the benchmarks, the comparative results, and the open-sourced evaluation code will foster future research in this direction among the 3D object retrieval community.

Few-Shot Semantic Relation Prediction across Heterogeneous Graphs

Semantic relation prediction aims to mine the implicit relationships between objects in heterogeneous graphs, which consist of different types of objects and different types of links. In real-world scenarios, new semantic relations constantly emerge and they typically appear with only a few labeled data. Since a variety of semantic relations exist in multiple heterogeneous graphs, the transferable knowledge can be mined from some existing semantic relations to help predict the new semantic relations with few labeled data. This inspires a novel problem of few-shot semantic relation prediction across heterogeneous graphs. However, the existing methods cannot solve this problem because they not only require a large number of labeled samples as input, but also focus on a single graph with a fixed heterogeneity. Targeting this novel and challenging problem, in this paper, we propose a Meta-learning based Graph neural network for Semantic relation prediction, named MetaGS. Firstly, MetaGS decomposes the graph structure between objects into multiple normalized subgraphs, then adopts a two-view graph neural network to capture local heterogeneous information and global structure information of these subgraphs. Secondly, MetaGS aggregates the information of these subgraphs with a hyper-prototypical network, which can learn from existing semantic relations and adapt to new semantic relations. Thirdly, using the well-initialized two-view graph neural network and hyper-prototypical network, MetaGS can effectively learn new semantic relations from different graphs while overcoming the limitation of few labeled data. Extensive experiments on three real-world datasets have demonstrated the superior performance of MetaGS over the state-of-the-art methods.

Exploiting Playbacks in Unsupervised Domain Adaptation for 3D Object Detection

Self-driving cars must detect other vehicles and pedestrians in 3D to plan safe routes and avoid collisions. State-of-the-art 3D object detectors, based on deep learning, have shown promising accuracy but are prone to over-fit to domain idiosyncrasies, making them fail in new environments -- a serious problem if autonomous vehicles are meant to operate freely. In this paper, we propose a novel learning approach that drastically reduces this gap by fine-tuning the detector on pseudo-labels in the target domain, which our method generates while the vehicle is parked, based on replays of previously recorded driving sequences. In these replays, objects are tracked over time, and detections are interpolated and extrapolated -- crucially, leveraging future information to catch hard cases. We show, on five autonomous driving datasets, that fine-tuning the object detector on these pseudo-labels substantially reduces the domain gap to new driving environments, yielding drastic improvements in accuracy and detection reliability.

Unsupervised Domain Adaptation through Shape Modeling for Medical Image Segmentation

Shape information is a strong and valuable prior in segmenting organs in medical images. However, most current deep learning based segmentation algorithms have not taken shape information into consideration, which can lead to bias towards texture. We aim at modeling shape explicitly and using it to help medical image segmentation. Previous methods proposed Variational Autoencoder (VAE) based models to learn the distribution of shape for a particular organ and used it to automatically evaluate the quality of a segmentation prediction by fitting it into the learned shape distribution. Based on which we aim at incorporating VAE into current segmentation pipelines. Specifically, we propose a new unsupervised domain adaptation pipeline based on a pseudo loss and a VAE reconstruction loss under a teacher-student learning paradigm. Both losses are optimized simultaneously and, in return, boost the segmentation task performance. Extensive experiments on three public Pancreas segmentation datasets as well as two in-house Pancreas segmentation datasets show consistent improvements with at least 2.8 points gain in the Dice score, demonstrating the effectiveness of our method in challenging unsupervised domain adaptation scenarios for medical image segmentation. We hope this work will advance shape analysis and geometric learning in medical imaging.
