Improving Investment Suggestions for Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Lending via Integrating Credit Scoring into Profit Scoring

In the peer-to-peer (P2P) lending market, lenders lend the money to the borrowers through a virtual platform and earn the possible profit generated by the interest rate. From the perspective of lenders, they want to maximize the profit while minimizing the risk. Therefore, many studies have used machine learning algorithms to help the lenders identify the "best" loans for making investments. The studies have mainly focused on two categories to guide the lenders' investments: one aims at minimizing the risk of investment (i.e., the credit scoring perspective) while the other aims at maximizing the profit (i.e., the profit scoring perspective). However, they have all focused on one category only and there is seldom research trying to integrate the two categories together. Motivated by this, we propose a two-stage framework that incorporates the credit information into a profit scoring modeling. We conducted the empirical experiment on a real-world P2P lending data from the US P2P market and used the Light Gradient Boosting Machine (lightGBM) algorithm in the two-stage framework. Results show that the proposed two-stage method could identify more profitable loans and thereby provide better investment guidance to the investors compared to the existing one-stage profit scoring alone approach. Therefore, the proposed framework serves as an innovative perspective for making investment decisions in P2P lending.

Risk Prediction of Peer-to-Peer Lending Market by a LSTM Model with Macroeconomic Factor

In the peer to peer (P2P) lending platform, investors hope to maximize their return while minimizing the risk through a comprehensive understanding of the P2P market. A low and stable average default rate across all the borrowers denotes a healthy P2P market and provides investors more confidence in a promising investment. Therefore, having a powerful model to describe the trend of the default rate in the P2P market is crucial. Different from previous studies that focus on modeling the default rate at the individual level, in this paper, we are the first to comprehensively explore the monthly trend of the default rate at the aggregative level for the P2P data from October 2007 to January 2016 in the US. We use the long short term memory (LSTM) approach to sequentially predict the default risk of the borrowers in Lending Club, which is the largest P2P lending platform in the US. Although being first applied in modeling the P2P sequential data, the LSTM approach shows its great potential by outperforming traditionally utilized time series models in our experiments. Furthermore, incorporating the macroeconomic feature \textit{unemp\_rate} (i.e., unemployment rate) can improve the LSTM performance by decreasing RMSE on both the training and the testing datasets. Our study can broaden the applications of the LSTM algorithm by using it on the sequential P2P data and guide the investors in making investment strategies.

Auxiliary-task Based Deep Reinforcement Learning for Participant Selection Problem in Mobile Crowdsourcing

In mobile crowdsourcing (MCS), the platform selects participants to complete location-aware tasks from the recruiters aiming to achieve multiple goals (e.g., profit maximization, energy efficiency, and fairness). However, different MCS systems have different goals and there are possibly conflicting goals even in one MCS system. Therefore, it is crucial to design a participant selection algorithm that applies to different MCS systems to achieve multiple goals. To deal with this issue, we formulate the participant selection problem as a reinforcement learning problem and propose to solve it with a novel method, which we call auxiliary-task based deep reinforcement learning (ADRL). We use transformers to extract representations from the context of the MCS system and a pointer network to deal with the combinatorial optimization problem. To improve the sample efficiency, we adopt an auxiliary-task training process that trains the network to predict the imminent tasks from the recruiters, which facilitates the embedding learning of the deep learning model. Additionally, we release a simulated environment on a specific MCS task, the ride-sharing task, and conduct extensive performance evaluations in this environment. The experimental results demonstrate that ADRL outperforms and improves sample efficiency over other well-recognized baselines in various settings.

The TianQin project: current progress on science and technology

TianQin is a planned space-based gravitational wave (GW) observatory consisting of three earth orbiting satellites with an orbital radius of about $10^5~{\rm km}$. The satellites will form a equilateral triangle constellation the plane of which is nearly perpendicular to the ecliptic plane. TianQin aims to detect GWs between $10^{-4}~{\rm Hz}$ and $1~{\rm Hz}$ that can be generated by a wide variety of important astrophysical and cosmological sources, including the inspiral of Galactic ultra-compact binaries, the inspiral of stellar-mass black hole binaries, extreme mass ratio inspirals, the merger of massive black hole binaries, and possibly the energetic processes in the very early universe or exotic sources such as cosmic strings. In order to start science operations around 2035, a roadmap called the 0123 plan is being used to bring the key technologies of TianQin to maturity, supported by the construction of a series of research facilities on the ground. Two major projects of the 0123 plan are being carried out. In this process, the team has created a new generation $17~{\rm cm}$ single-body hollow corner-cube retro-reflector which has been launched with the QueQiao satellite on 21 May 2018; a new laser ranging station equipped with a $1.2~{\rm m}$ telescope has been constructed and the station has successfully ranged to all the five retro-reflectors on the Moon; and the TianQin-1 experimental satellite has been launched on 20 December 2019 and the first round result shows that the satellite has exceeded all of its mission requirements.

Noise-resistant phase gates with amplitude modulation

We propose a simple scheme for implementing fast arbitrary phase gates and employ pulse modulation to improve the gate robustness against different sources of noise. Parametric driving of a cavity is introduced to induce Rabi interactions between the cavity and qutrits, and then a two-qubit arbitrary phase gate is constructed by designing proper logical states. On this basis, we implement amplitude-shaped gates to obtain enhanced resilience to control errors in gate time and frequency detuning. By virtue of specifically designed logical states, the scheme displays intrinsic resistance to the energy relaxations of qutrits. Furthermore, we show that the gate robustness against cavity decay can be enhanced significantly with amplitude modulation.

Evidence of Rotational Fröhlich Coupling in Polaronic Trions

Electrons commonly couple through Fröhlich interactions with longitudinal optical phonons to form polarons. However, trions possess a finite angular momentum and should therefore couple instead to rotational optical phonons. This creates a polaronic trion whose binding energy is determined by the crystallographic orientation of the lattice. Here, we demonstrate theoretically within the Fröhlich approach and experimentally by photoluminescence emission that the bare trion binding energy (20 meV) is significantly enhanced by the phonons at the interface between the two-dimensional semiconductor MoS$_2$ and the bulk transition metal oxide SrTiO$_3$. The low-temperature {binding energy} changes from 60 meV in [001]-oriented substrates to 90 meV for [111] orientation, as a result of the counter-intuitive interplay between the rotational axis of the MoS$_2$ trion and that of the SrTiO$_3$ phonon mode.

Domain Adaptive Relational Reasoning for 3D Multi-Organ Segmentation

In this paper, we present a novel unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) method, named Domain Adaptive Relational Reasoning (DARR), to generalize 3D multi-organ segmentation models to medical data collected from different scanners and/or protocols (domains). Our method is inspired by the fact that the spatial relationship between internal structures in medical images is relatively fixed, e.g., a spleen is always located at the tail of a pancreas, which serves as a latent variable to transfer the knowledge shared across multiple domains. We formulate the spatial relationship by solving a jigsaw puzzle task, i.e., recovering a CT scan from its shuffled patches, and jointly train it with the organ segmentation task. To guarantee the transferability of the learned spatial relationship to multiple domains, we additionally introduce two schemes: 1) Employing a super-resolution network also jointly trained with the segmentation model to standardize medical images from different domain to a certain spatial resolution; 2) Adapting the spatial relationship for a test image by test-time jigsaw puzzle training. Experimental results show that our method improves the performance by 29.60% DSC on target datasets on average without using any data from the target domain during training.

Weight modules for map (super)algebra related to the Virasoro algebra

We classify Jet modules for the Lie (super)algebras $\mathfrak{L}=W\ltimes(\mathfrak{g}\otimes\mathbb{C}[t,t^{-1}])$, where $W$ is the Witt algebra and $\mathfrak{g}$ is a Lie superalgebra with an even diagonlizable derivation. Then we give a concept method to classify all simple cuspidal modules for $\mathfrak{L}$ and the map superalgebras, which are of the form $\mathfrak{L}\otimes R$, where $R$ is a Noetherian unital supercommutative associative superalgebra.

Analyses of residual accelerations for TianQin based on the global MHD simulation

TianQin is a proposed space-based gravitational wave observatory. It is designed to detect the gravitational wave signals in the frequency range of 0.1 mHz -- 1 Hz. At a geocentric distance of $10^5$ km, the plasma in the earth magnetosphere will contribute as the main source of environmental noises. Here, we analyze the acceleration noises that are caused by the magnetic field of space plasma for the test mass of TianQin. The real solar wind data observed by the Advanced Composition Explorer are taken as the input of the magnetohydrodynamic simulation. The Space Weather Modeling Framework is used to simulate the global magnetosphere of the earth, from which we obtain the plasma and magnetic field parameters on the detector's orbits. We calculate the time series of the residual accelerations and the corresponding amplitude spectral densities on these orbit configurations. We find that the residual acceleration produced by the interaction between the TM's magnetic moment induced by the space magnetic field and the spacecraft magnetic field ($\bm{a}_{\rm M1}$) is the dominant term, which can approach $10^{-15}$ m/s$^2$/Hz$^{1/2}$ at $f \approx$ 0.2 mHz for the nominal values of the magnetic susceptibility ($χ_{\rm m} = 10^{-5}$) and the magnetic shielding factor ($ξ_{\rm m} = 10$) of the test mass. The ratios between the amplitude spectral density of the acceleration noise caused by the space magnetic field and the preliminary goal of the inertial sensor are 0.38 and 0.08 at 1 mHz and 10 mHz, respectively. We discuss the further reduction of this acceleration noise by decreasing $χ_{\rm m}$ and/or increasing $ξ_{\rm m}$ in the future instrumentation development for TianQin.

Recognizing Chinese Judicial Named Entity using BiLSTM-CRF

Named entity recognition (NER) plays an essential role in natural language processing systems. Judicial NER is a fundamental component of judicial information retrieval, entity relation extraction, and knowledge map building. However, Chinese judicial NER remains to be more challenging due to the characteristics of Chinese and high accuracy requirements in the judicial filed. Thus, in this paper, we propose a deep learning-based method named BiLSTM-CRF which consists of bi-directional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) and conditional random fields (CRF). For further accuracy promotion, we propose to use Adaptive moment estimation (Adam) for optimization of the model. To validate our method, we perform experiments on judgment documents including commutation, parole and temporary service outside prison, which is acquired from China Judgments Online. Experimental results achieve the accuracy of 0.876, recall of 0.856 and F1 score of 0.855, which suggests the superiority of the proposed BiLSTM-CRF with Adam optimizer.

Organ size increases with obesity and correlates with cancer risk

Obesity increases significantly cancer risk in various organs. Although this has been recognized for decades, the mechanism through which this happens has never been explained. Here, we show that the volumes of kidneys, pancreas, and liver are strongly correlated (median correlation = 0.625; P-value<10-47) with the body mass index (BMI) of an individual. We also find a significant relationship between the increase in organ volume and the increase in cancer risk (P-value<10-12). These results provide a mechanism explaining why obese individuals have higher cancer risk in several organs: the larger the organ volume the more cells at risk of becoming cancerous. These findings are important for a better understanding of the effects obesity has on cancer risk and, more generally, for the development of better preventive strategies to limit the mortality caused by obesity.

The 'Letter' Distribution in the Chinese Language

Corpus-based statistical analysis plays a significant role in linguistic research, and ample evidence has shown that different languages exhibit some common laws. Studies have found that letters in some alphabetic writing languages have strikingly similar statistical usage frequency distributions. Does this hold for Chinese, which employs ideogram writing? We obtained letter frequency data of some alphabetic writing languages and found the common law of the letter distributions. In addition, we collected Chinese literature corpora for different historical periods from the Tang Dynasty to the present, and we dismantled the Chinese written language into three kinds of basic particles: characters, strokes and constructive parts. The results of the statistical analysis showed that, in different historical periods, the intensity of the use of basic particles in Chinese writing varied, but the form of the distribution was consistent. In particular, the distributions of the Chinese constructive parts are certainly consistent with those alphabetic writing languages. This study provides new evidence of the consistency of human languages.

Train in Germany, Test in The USA: Making 3D Object Detectors Generalize

In the domain of autonomous driving, deep learning has substantially improved the 3D object detection accuracy for LiDAR and stereo camera data alike. While deep networks are great at generalization, they are also notorious to over-fit to all kinds of spurious artifacts, such as brightness, car sizes and models, that may appear consistently throughout the data. In fact, most datasets for autonomous driving are collected within a narrow subset of cities within one country, typically under similar weather conditions. In this paper we consider the task of adapting 3D object detectors from one dataset to another. We observe that naively, this appears to be a very challenging task, resulting in drastic drops in accuracy levels. We provide extensive experiments to investigate the true adaptation challenges and arrive at a surprising conclusion: the primary adaptation hurdle to overcome are differences in car sizes across geographic areas. A simple correction based on the average car size yields a strong correction of the adaptation gap. Our proposed method is simple and easily incorporated into most 3D object detection frameworks. It provides a first baseline for 3D object detection adaptation across countries, and gives hope that the underlying problem may be more within grasp than one may have hoped to believe. End-to-End Pseudo-LiDAR for Image-Based 3D Object Detection

Reliable and accurate 3D object detection is a necessity for safe autonomous driving. Although LiDAR sensors can provide accurate 3D point cloud estimates of the environment, they are also prohibitively expensive for many settings. Recently, the introduction of pseudo-LiDAR (PL) has led to a drastic reduction in the accuracy gap between methods based on LiDAR sensors and those based on cheap stereo cameras. PL combines state-of-the-art deep neural networks for 3D depth estimation with those for 3D object detection by converting 2D depth map outputs to 3D point cloud inputs. However, so far these two networks have to be trained separately. In this paper, we introduce a new framework based on differentiable Change of Representation (CoR) modules that allow the entire PL pipeline to be trained end-to-end. The resulting framework is compatible with most state-of-the-art networks for both tasks and in combination with PointRCNN improves over PL consistently across all benchmarks -- yielding the highest entry on the KITTI image-based 3D object detection leaderboard at the time of submission. Our code will be made available at https://github.com/mileyan/pseudo-LiDAR_e2e.

ILD Benchmark: Search for Extra Scalars Produced in Association with a $Z$ boson at $\sqrt{s}=500$ GeV

We study the prospects for discovering an extra scalar boson $S^0$ at the International Linear Collider (ILC) based on a full simulation of the International Large Detector (ILD). In order to provide results in an as model-independent way as possible, the analysis uses the recoil of the scalar against a $Z$ boson decaying into a pair of muons, $e^+e^- \to μμS^{0}$. This process serves as a physics benchmark for the ILD detector performance at $\sqrt{s}=500$ GeV, specifically for the muon ID and momentum resolution, as well as for the identification of initial state radiation photons and their energy measurement. As final results, the sensitivities for discovering the extra scalars at 2 $σ$ level are evaluated in terms of a scale factor $\sin^2θ$ with respect to the Standard Model value of the cross section for the Higgs--strahlung process. Two detector models, IDR-L and IDR-S, are considered in the analysis, which differ in radius of the tracking volume, aspect ratio and strength of the magnetic field. While the two detector models show a visible difference in the precision of the reconstructed invariant di-muon mass, no difference is found at the level of the final results.

MPC-based Vibration Control and Energy Harvesting Using an Electromagnetic Vibration Absorber With Inertia Nonlinearity

Simultaneous vibration control and energy harvesting of vehicle suspensions has attracted great research interests over the past decades. However, existing frameworks tradeoff suspension performance for energy recovery and are only responsive to narrow-bandwidth vibrations. In this paper, a new energy-regenerative vibration absorber (ERVA) using a ball-screw mechanism is investigated. The ERVA system is based on a rotary electromagnetic generator with adjustable nonlinear rotational inertia which passively increases the moment of inertia as the vibration amplitude increases. This structure is effective for energy harvesting and vibration control without increasing the suspension size. Furthermore, a nonlinear model predictive controller (NMPC) is applied to the system for further performance enhancement where we exploit road profile information as a preview. The performance of NMPC-based ERVA is demonstrated in a number of simulations and superior performance is demonstrated.

Evasion of HSR in the charmless decays of excited $P$-wave charmonia

We investigate the charmless decays of excited $P$-wave charmonia $χ_{c1}^\prime \to VV$ and $χ_{c2}^\prime \to VP$ via intermediate charmed meson loops, where $V$ and $P$ denote the light vector and pseudoscalar mesons, respectively. Within the model parameters, the charmed meson loop contributions are evaluated by using the effective Lagrangian approach. For $χ_{c1}^\prime \to VV$, the partial widths of the $ρρ$, $ωω$, and $K^*{\bar K}^*$ channels can reach to the order of MeV, while the partial width of the $ϕϕ$ channel is very small and in the order of keV. For $χ_{c2}^\prime \to V P$, the partial widths of $χ_{c2}^{\prime} \to K^\ast \bar{K}+c.c$ turns out to be sizeable, while the partial widths of $χ_{c2}^{\prime} \to ρ^+π^- +c.c$ is found to be much smaller than the $K^\ast \bar{K}+c.c$ channel. Our calculations may be examined by the future BESIII experiments.

Beyond CNNs: Exploiting Further Inherent Symmetries in Medical Images for Segmentation

Automatic tumor segmentation is a crucial step in medical image analysis for computer-aided diagnosis. Although the existing methods based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved the state-of-the-art performance, many challenges still remain in medical tumor segmentation. This is because regular CNNs can only exploit translation invariance, ignoring further inherent symmetries existing in medical images such as rotations and reflections. To mitigate this shortcoming, we propose a novel group equivariant segmentation framework by encoding those inherent symmetries for learning more precise representations. First, kernel-based equivariant operations are devised on every orientation, which can effectively address the gaps of learning symmetries in existing approaches. Then, to keep segmentation networks globally equivariant, we design distinctive group layers with layerwise symmetry constraints. By exploiting further symmetries, novel segmentation CNNs can dramatically reduce the sample complexity and the redundancy of filters (by roughly 2/3) over regular CNNs. More importantly, based on our novel framework, we show that a newly built GER-UNet outperforms its regular CNN-based counterpart and the state-of-the-art segmentation methods on real-world clinical data. Specifically, the group layers of our segmentation framework can be seamlessly integrated into any popular CNN-based segmentation architectures.
