Controllable Goos-Hänchen shifts and spin beam splitter for ballistic electrons in a parabolic quantum well under a uniform magnetic field

The quantum Goos-Hänchen shift for ballistic electrons is investigated in a parabolic potential well under a uniform vertical magnetic field. It is found that the Goos-Hänchen shift can be negative as well as positive, and becomes zero at transmission resonances. The beam shift depends not only on the incident energy and incidence angle, but also on the magnetic field and Landau quantum number. Based on these phenomena, we propose an alternative way to realize the spin beam splitter in the proposed spintronic device, which can completely separate spin-up and spin-down electron beams by negative and positive Goos-Hänchen shifts.

Metal-terminated Graphene Nanoribbons

We have investigated structure, electronic, and magnetic properties of metal-terminated zigzag graphene nanoribbons (M-ZGNRs) by first-principles calculations. Two families of metal terminations are studied: (1) 3d-transition metals (TMs) Fe, Co, and Ni and (2) noble metals (NMs) Cu, Ag, and Au. All systems have spin-polarized edge states with antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering between two edges, except Co-ZGNRs and Ni-ZGNRs which exhibit negligibly small energy differences between AFM and ferromagnetic states with the given ribbon width. In the AFM state the TM terminations transform semiconducting ZGNRs into metallic ones while the band gap remains in ZGNR with NM terminations. Ferromagnetic states of M-ZGNRs with TM terminations show a high degree of spin polarization at the Fermi energy. We predict a large magnetoresistance in Fe-ZGNR junctions with a low, uniform magnetic switching field.

Interedge magnetic coupling in transition-metal terminated graphene nanoribbons

The magnetic structures and interedge magnetic couplings of Fe, Co and Ni transition-metal terminated graphene nanoribbons with zigzag (ZGNR) and armchair (AGNR) edges are studied by first-principles calculations. Fe-ZGNR is found to show antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling between two edges, while the interedge coupling of Co-ZGNR is ferromagnetic (FM). For Fe-AGNRs and Co-AGNRs, increasing the interedge distance we follow oscillatory transitions from FM to AF coupling with a period of about 3.7 Å. The damped oscillatory behavior indicates a Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida type interedge magnetic coupling and the oscillation period is determined by the critical spanning vector which connects two inequivalent Dirac points in the graphene Brillouin zone. The two edges in Ni-ZGNR are decoupled independent of the ribbon width and Ni-AGNRs are found to be nonmangetic.

Asymptotic Optimality Theory For Decentralized Sequential Multihypothesis Testing Problems

The Bayesian formulation of sequentially testing $M \ge 3$ hypotheses is studied in the context of a decentralized sensor network system. In such a system, local sensors observe raw observations and send quantized sensor messages to a fusion center which makes a final decision when stopping taking observations. Asymptotically optimal decentralized sequential tests are developed from a class of "two-stage" tests that allows the sensor network system to make a preliminary decision in the first stage and then optimize each local sensor quantizer accordingly in the second stage. It is shown that the optimal local quantizer at each local sensor in the second stage can be defined as a maximin quantizer which turns out to be a randomization of at most $M-1$ unambiguous likelihood quantizers (ULQ). We first present in detail our results for the system with a single sensor and binary sensor messages, and then extend to more general cases involving any finite alphabet sensor messages, multiple sensors, or composite hypotheses.

A unit vector for characterizing the spin polarization of free electron

New degrees of freedom having the form of a unit vector are identified for characterizing the spin polarization of free electron. It is shown that when only the spin is considered, the non-commutativity of the Cartesian components of the Pauli vector allows us to use the azimuthal angle of a second direction, denoted by unit vector $\mathbf I$, with respect to the quantization direction to characterize the spin polarization. The rotation of $\mathbf I$ through an angle about the quantization axis leads to a rotation of the spin polarization vector through twice the angle about the same axis. Discussions are also made in Heisenberg picture as well. Upon utilizing this approach to a free electron and letting the quantization direction for each plane wave be the wave vector, we arrive at a representation in which the unit vector $\mathbf I$ functions as an independent index to characterize the spin polarization.

A class of Solvable Lie algebras

All finite-dimensional indecomposable solvable Lie algebras g, having the filiform Lie algebra Q_(2m+1) as the nilradical, are studied and classified. It turns out that the dimension of g is at most dimQ_(2m+1)+2.

Dusty Disks around White Dwarfs I: Origin of Debris Disks

A significant fraction of the mature FGK stars have cool dusty disks at least an orders of magnitudes brighter than the solar system's outer zodiacal light. Since such dusts must be continually replenished, they are generally assumed to be the collisional fragments of residual planetesimals analogous to the Kuiper Belt objects. At least 10% of solar type stars also bear gas giant planets. The fraction of stars with known gas giants or detectable debris disks (or both) appears to increase with the stellar mass. Here, we examine the dynamical evolution of systems of long-period gas giant planets and residual planetesimals as their host stars evolve off the main sequence, lose mass, and form planetary nebula around remnant white dwarf cores. The orbits of distant gas giant planets and super-km-size planetesimals expand adiabatically. During the most intense AGB mass loss phase, sub-meter-size particles migrate toward their host stars due to the strong hydrodynamical drag by the intense stellar wind. Along their migration paths, gas giant planets capture and sweep up sub-km-size planetesimals onto their mean-motion resonances. These planetesimals also acquire modest eccentricities which are determined by the mass of the perturbing planets, the rate and speed of stellar mass loss. The swept-up planetesimals undergo disruptive collisions which lead to the production of grains with an extended size range. The radiation drag on these particles is ineffective against the planets' resonant barrier and they form 30-to-150-AU-sizes rings which can effective reprocess the stellar irradiation in the form of FIR continuum. We identify the recently discovered dust ring around the white dwarf WD 2226-210 at the center of the Helix nebula as a prototype of such disks and suggest such rings may be common.

Decentralized Multihypothesis Sequential Detection

This article is concerned with decentralized sequential testing of multiple hypotheses. In a sensor network system with limited local memory, raw observations are observed at the local sensors, and quantized into binary sensor messages that are sent to a fusion center, which makes a final decision. It is assumed that the raw sensor observations are distributed according to a set of M>=2 specified distributions, and the fusion center has to utilize quantized sensor messages to decide which one is the true distribution. Asymptotically Bayes tests are offered for decentralized multihypothesis sequential detection by combining three existing methodologies together: tandem quantizers, unambiguous likelihood quantizers, and randomized quantizers.

In this paper, we give the quantum wave equations of single photon when it is in the free or medium space. With these equations, we can study light interference and diffraction with quantum approach. Otherwise, they can be applied in quantum optics and photonic crystal.

Particle Swarm Optimization and gravitational wave data analysis: Performance on a binary inspiral testbed

The detection and estimation of gravitational wave (GW) signals belonging to a parameterized family of waveforms requires, in general, the numerical maximization of a data-dependent function of the signal parameters. Due to noise in the data, the function to be maximized is often highly multi-modal with numerous local maxima. Searching for the global maximum then becomes computationally expensive, which in turn can limit the scientific scope of the search. Stochastic optimization is one possible approach to reducing computational costs in such applications. We report results from a first investigation of the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method in this context. The method is applied to a testbed motivated by the problem of detection and estimation of a binary inspiral signal. Our results show that PSO works well in the presence of high multi-modality, making it a viable candidate method for further applications in GW data analysis.

The Mock LISA Data Challenges: from Challenge 1B to Challenge 3

The Mock LISA Data Challenges are a programme to demonstrate and encourage the development of LISA data-analysis capabilities, tools and techniques. At the time of this workshop, three rounds of challenges had been completed, and the next was about to start. In this article we provide a critical analysis of entries to the latest completed round, Challenge 1B. The entries confirm the consolidation of a range of data-analysis techniques for Galactic and massive--black-hole binaries, and they include the first convincing examples of detection and parameter estimation of extreme--mass-ratio inspiral sources. In this article we also introduce the next round, Challenge 3. Its data sets feature more realistic waveform models (e.g., Galactic binaries may now chirp, and massive--black-hole binaries may precess due to spin interactions), as well as new source classes (bursts from cosmic strings, isotropic stochastic backgrounds) and more complicated nonsymmetric instrument noise.

Decentralized Two-Sided Sequential Tests for A Normal Mean

This article is concerned with decentralized sequential testing of a normal mean $μ$ with two-sided alternatives. It is assumed that in a single-sensor network system with limited local memory, i.i.d. normal raw observations are observed at the local sensor, and quantized into binary messages that are sent to the fusion center, which makes a final decision between the null hypothesis $H_0: μ= 0$ and the alternative hypothesis $H_1: μ= \pm 1.$ We propose a decentralized sequential test using the idea of tandem quantizers (or equivalently, a one-shot feedback). Surprisingly, our proposed test only uses the quantizers of the form $I(X_{n} \ge λ),$ but it is shown to be asymptotically Bayes. Moreover, by adopting the principle of invariance, we also investigate decentralized invariant tests with the stationary quantizers of the form $I(|X_{n}| > λ),$ and show that $λ= 0.5$ only leads to a suboptimal decentralized invariant sequential test. Numerical simulations are conducted to support our arguments.

Strong field effects on pulsar arrival times: circular orbits and equatorial beams

If a pulsar orbits a supermassive black hole, the timing of pulses that pass close to the hole will show a variety of strong field effects. To compute the intensity and timing of pulses that have passed close to a nonrotating black hole we introduce here a simple formalism based on two "universal functions," one for the bending of photon trajectories and the other for the photon travel time on these trajectories. We apply this simple formalism to the case of a pulsar in circular orbit that beams its pulses into the orbital plane. In addition to the "primary" pulses that reach the receiver by a more-or-less direct path, we find that there are secondary and higher order pulses. These are usually much dimmer than the primary pulses, but they can be of comparable or even greater intensity if they are emitted when pulsar is on the side of the hole furthest from the receiver. We show that there is a phase relationship of the primary and secondary pulses that is a probe of the strongly curved spacetime geometry. Analogs of these phenomena are expected in more general configurations, in which a pulsar in orbit around a hole emits pulses that are not confined to the orbital plane.

A spatially shifted beam approach to subwavelength focusing

Although negative-refractive-index metamaterials have successfully achieved subwavelength focusing, image resolution is limited by the presence of losses. In this Letter, a metal transmission screen with subwavelength spaced slots is proposed that focuses the near-field beyond the diffraction limit and furthermore, is easily scaled from microwave frequencies to the optical regime. An analytical model based on the superposition of shifted beam patterns is developed that agrees very well with full-wave simulations and is corroborated by experimental results at microwave frequencies.

Electronic and Vibrational Properties of gamma-AlH3

Aluminum hydride (alane) AlH_3 is an important material in hydrogen storage applications. It is known that AlH_3 exists in multiply forms of polymorphs, where $α$-AlH_3 is found to be the most stable with a hexagonal structure. Recent experimental studies on $γ$-AlH_3 reported an orthorhombic structure with a unique double-bridge bond between certain Al and H atoms. This was not found in $α$-AlH_3 or other polymorphs. Using density functional theory, we have investigated the energetics, and the structural, electronic, and phonon vibrational properties for the newly reported $γ$-AlH_3 structure. The current calculation concludes that $γ$-AlH_3 is less stable than $α$-AlH_3 by 2.1 KJ/mol. Interesting binding features associated with the unique geometry of $γ$-AlH3 are discussed from the calculated electronic properties and phonon vibrational modes. The binding of H-s with higher energy Al-p,d orbitals is enhanced within the double-bridge arrangement, giving rise to a higher electronic energy for the system. Distinguishable new features in the vibrational spectrum of $γ$-AlH_3 were attributed to the double-bridge and hexagonal-ring structures.

Secure quantum key distribution network with Bell states and local unitary operations

We propose a theoretical scheme for secure quantum key distribution network following the ideas in quantum dense coding. In this scheme, the server of the network provides the service for preparing and measuring the Bell states, and the users encodes the states with local unitary operations. For preventing the server from eavesdropping, we design a decoy when the particle is transmitted between the users. It has high capacity as one particle carries two bits of information and its efficiency for qubits approaches 100%. Moreover, it is not necessary for the users to store the quantum states, which makes this scheme more convenient for application than others.

Symmetric multiparty-controlled teleportation of an arbitrary two-particle entanglement

We present a way for symmetric multiparty-controlled teleportation of an arbitrary two-particle entangled state based on Bell-basis measurements by using two Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states, i.e., a sender transmits an arbitrary two-particle entangled state to a distant receiver, an arbitrary one of the $n+1$ agents via the control of the others in a network. It will be shown that the outcomes in the cases that $n$ is odd or it is even are different in principle as the receiver has to perform a controlled-not operation on his particles for reconstructing the original arbitrary entangled state in addition to some local unitary operations in the former. Also we discuss the applications of this controlled teleporation for quantum secret sharing of classical and quantum information. As all the instances can be used to carry useful information, its efficiency for qubits approaches the maximal value.
