Don't Just Demo, Teach Me the Principles: A Principle-Based Multi-Agent Prompting Strategy for Text Classification

We present PRINCIPLE-BASED PROMPTING, a simple but effective multi-agent prompting strategy for text classification. It first asks multiple LLM agents to independently generate candidate principles based on analysis of demonstration samples with or without labels, consolidates them into final principles via a finalizer agent, and then sends them to a classifier agent to perform downstream classification tasks. Extensive experiments on binary and multi-class classification datasets with different sizes of LLMs show that our approach not only achieves substantial performance gains (1.55% - 19.37%) over zero-shot prompting on macro-F1 score but also outperforms other strong baselines (CoT and stepback prompting). Principles generated by our approach help LLMs perform better on classification tasks than human crafted principles on two private datasets. Our multi-agent PRINCIPLE-BASED PROMPTING approach also shows on-par or better performance compared to demonstration-based few-shot prompting approaches, yet with substantially lower inference costs. Ablation studies show that label information and the multi-agent cooperative LLM framework play an important role in generating high-quality principles to facilitate downstream classification tasks.

CIRCUIT: A Benchmark for Circuit Interpretation and Reasoning Capabilities of LLMs

The role of Large Language Models (LLMs) has not been extensively explored in analog circuit design, which could benefit from a reasoning-based approach that transcends traditional optimization techniques. In particular, despite their growing relevance, there are no benchmarks to assess LLMs' reasoning capability about circuits. Therefore, we created the CIRCUIT dataset consisting of 510 question-answer pairs spanning various levels of analog-circuit-related subjects. The best-performing model on our dataset, GPT-4o, achieves 48.04% accuracy when evaluated on the final numerical answer. To evaluate the robustness of LLMs on our dataset, we introduced a unique feature that enables unit-test-like evaluation by grouping questions into unit tests. In this case, GPT-4o can only pass 27.45% of the unit tests, highlighting that the most advanced LLMs still struggle with understanding circuits, which requires multi-level reasoning, particularly when involving circuit topologies. This circuit-specific benchmark highlights LLMs' limitations, offering valuable insights for advancing their application in analog integrated circuit design.

Minimum Entropy Indicator for Evaluating Dispersion Measure

Advanced radio telescopes such as the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) can provide high-sensitivity and high-time-resolution data of a large number of radio sources, offering an excellent opportunity for studying radio pulse profiles. However, studying pulse profiles requires the analysis of dispersion measurement (DM). The fitting method tends to make the profile conform to the model, so the fitting method is not suitable for pulse profile research. Indicators are needed to determine the profile closest to the real one, which is the profile discrimination method. This work is based on the definition of Shannon's information entropy, and believes that the pulse profile when the entropy is minimized is the closest to the true profile. This indicator is simple to calculate and can provide help for pulse profile research. This work uses real data from 48 pulsars. By calculating the information entropy of the pulsar profiles under different DMs, the DM corresponding to the minimum entropy is found, thus verifying the validity of the minimum entropy indicator. In terms of the analysis results for the 48 pulsars, the differences with the references are less than 0.5\% for all except 3 stars, and the results for these 3 stars are consistent with older references. The minimum entropy indicator can effectively obtain the DMs of radio pulse signals with low computational complexity, but it cannot be proven to be the optimal criterion. It is suggested to use multiple indicators separately when studying pulse profiles. It can be expected that the optimal indicator can provide information on the radiation mechanism of radio sources.

Restore-RWKV: Efficient and Effective Medical Image Restoration with RWKV

Transformers have revolutionized medical image restoration, but the quadratic complexity still poses limitations for their application to high-resolution medical images. The recent advent of the Receptance Weighted Key Value (RWKV) model in the natural language processing field has attracted much attention due to its ability to process long sequences efficiently. To leverage its advanced design, we propose Restore-RWKV, the first RWKV-based model for medical image restoration. Since the original RWKV model is designed for 1D sequences, we make two necessary modifications for modeling spatial relations in 2D medical images. First, we present a recurrent WKV (Re-WKV) attention mechanism that captures global dependencies with linear computational complexity. Re-WKV incorporates bidirectional attention as basic for a global receptive field and recurrent attention to effectively model 2D dependencies from various scan directions. Second, we develop an omnidirectional token shift (Omni-Shift) layer that enhances local dependencies by shifting tokens from all directions and across a wide context range. These adaptations make the proposed Restore-RWKV an efficient and effective model for medical image restoration. Even a lightweight variant of Restore-RWKV, with only 1.16 million parameters, achieves comparable or even superior results compared to existing state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the resulting Restore-RWKV achieves SOTA performance across a range of medical image restoration tasks, including PET image synthesis, CT image denoising, MRI image super-resolution, and all-in-one medical image restoration. A New Underdetermined Framework for Sparse Estimation of Fault Location for Transmission Lines Using Limited Current Measurements

This letter proposes an alternative underdetermined framework for fault location that utilizes current measurements along with the branch-bus matrix, providing another option besides the traditional voltage-based methods. To enhance fault location accuracy in the presence of multiple outliers, the robust YALL1 algorithm is used to resist outlier interference and accurately recover the sparse vector, thereby pinpointing the fault precisely. The results on the IEEE 39-bus test system demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.

All-electric mimicking synaptic plasticity based on the noncollinear antiferromagnetic device

Neuromorphic computing, which seeks to replicate the brain's ability to process information, has garnered significant attention due to its potential to achieve brain-like computing efficiency and human cognitive intelligence. Spin-orbit torque (SOT) devices can be used to simulate artificial synapses with non-volatile, high-speed processing and endurance characteristics. Nevertheless, achieving energy-efficient all-electric synaptic plasticity emulation using SOT devices remains a challenge. We chose the noncollinear antiferromagnetic Mn3Pt as spin source to fabricate the Mn3Pt-based SOT device, leveraging its unconventional spin current resulting from magnetic space breaking. By adjusting the amplitude, duration, and number of pulsed currents, the Mn3Pt-based SOT device achieves nonvolatile multi-state modulated by all-electric SOT switching, enabling emulate synaptic behaviors like excitatory postsynaptic potential (EPSP), inhibitory postsynaptic potential (IPSP), long-term depression (LTD) and the long-term potentiation (LTP) process. In addition, we show the successful training of an artificial neural network based on such SOT device in recognizing handwritten digits with a high recognition accuracy of 94.95 %, which is only slightly lower than that from simulations (98.04 %). These findings suggest that the Mn3Pt-based SOT device is a promising candidate for the implementation of memristor-based brain-inspired computing systems.

A Differentially Private Quantum Neural Network for Probabilistic Optimal Power Flow

The stochastic nature of renewable energy and load demand requires efficient and accurate solutions for probabilistic optimal power flow (OPF). Quantum neural networks (QNNs), which combine quantum computing and machine learning, offer computational advantages in approximating OPF by effectively handling high-dimensional data. However, adversaries with access to non-private OPF solutions can potentially infer sensitive load demand patterns, raising significant privacy concerns. To address this issue, we propose a privacy-preserving QNN model for probabilistic OPF approximation. By incorporating Gaussian noise into the training process, the learning algorithm achieves ($\varepsilon, δ$)-differential privacy with theoretical guarantees. Moreover, we develop a strongly entangled quantum state to enhance the nonlinearity expressiveness of the QNN. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method successfully prevents privacy leakage without compromising the statistical properties of probabilistic OPF. Moreover, compared to classical private neural networks, the QNN reduces the number of parameters by 90% while achieving significantly higher accuracy and greater stability.

APACHE: A Processing-Near-Memory Architecture for Multi-Scheme Fully Homomorphic Encryption

Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) is known to be extremely computationally-intensive, application-specific accelerators emerged as a powerful solution to narrow the performance gap. Nonetheless, due to the increasing complexities in FHE schemes per se and multi-scheme FHE algorithm designs in end-to-end privacy-preserving tasks, existing FHE accelerators often face the challenges of low hardware utilization rates and insufficient memory bandwidth. In this work, we present \NAME, a layered near-memory computing hierarchy tailored for multi-scheme FHE acceleration. By closely inspecting the data flow across different FHE schemes, we propose a layered near-memory computing architecture with fine-grained functional unit design to significantly enhance the utilization rates of computational resources and memory bandwidth. The experimental results illustrate that APACHE outperforms state-of-the-art ASIC FHE accelerators by 10.63x to 35.47x over a variety of application benchmarks, e.g., Lola MNIST, HELR, VSP, and HE$^{3}$DB.

AttriPrompter: Auto-Prompting with Attribute Semantics for Zero-shot Nuclei Detection via Visual-Language Pre-trained Models

Large-scale visual-language pre-trained models (VLPMs) have demonstrated exceptional performance in downstream object detection through text prompts for natural scenes. However, their application to zero-shot nuclei detection on histopathology images remains relatively unexplored, mainly due to the significant gap between the characteristics of medical images and the web-originated text-image pairs used for pre-training. This paper aims to investigate the potential of the object-level VLPM, Grounded Language-Image Pre-training (GLIP), for zero-shot nuclei detection. Specifically, we propose an innovative auto-prompting pipeline, named AttriPrompter, comprising attribute generation, attribute augmentation, and relevance sorting, to avoid subjective manual prompt design. AttriPrompter utilizes VLPMs' text-to-image alignment to create semantically rich text prompts, which are then fed into GLIP for initial zero-shot nuclei detection. Additionally, we propose a self-trained knowledge distillation framework, where GLIP serves as the teacher with its initial predictions used as pseudo labels, to address the challenges posed by high nuclei density, including missed detections, false positives, and overlapping instances. Our method exhibits remarkable performance in label-free nuclei detection, outperforming all existing unsupervised methods and demonstrating excellent generality. Notably, this work highlights the astonishing potential of VLPMs pre-trained on natural image-text pairs for downstream tasks in the medical field as well. Code will be released at https://github.com/wuyongjianCODE/AttriPrompter.

Fano 3-folds and classification of constantly curved holomorphic $2$-spheres of degree $6$ in the complex Grassmannian $G(2,5)$

Up to now the only known constantly curved sextic curve, i.e., holomorphic 2-sphere of degree 6, in the complex $G(2,5)$ has been the first associated curve of the Veronese curve of degree 4, which indicates that such curves are rare to find. Exploring the rich interplay between the ramification of harmonic sequences in differential geometry and algebro-geometric properties of projectively equivalent Fano 3-folds of index 2 and degree 5, we invoke the moduli space structure of sextic curves in the Fano 3-fold often referred to as $V_5$ to confirm the rarity of constancy of curvature, by establishing that the harmonic sequence of a generic sextic curve in $G(2, 5)$ is totally unramified. This paper proposes to investigate from the Galois viewpoint the way ramification can appear in relation to the constancy of curvature among nongeneric sextic curves in $G(2, 5)$. We prove through elaborate $PSL_2$-transvectant and engaged unitary analyses that, up to the ambient unitary equivalence, the moduli space of constantly curved sextic curves in $G(2,5)$ that are $GL(5,{\mathbb C})$-equivalent to those in $V_5$ ramified at the $PSL_2$-invariant 1-dimensional singular locus somewhere, is semialgebraic of dimension 2 all members of which barring the above Veronese curve are nonhomogeneous. Many explicit examples can be constructed.

Dark energy effects on surface gravitational redshift and Keplerian frequency of neutron stars

The research of the properties of neutron stars with dark energy is a particularly interesting yet unresolved problem in astrophysics. We analyze the influence of dark energy on the equation of state, the maximum mass, the surface gravitational redshift, and the Keplerian frequency for the traditional neutron star and the hyperon star matter within the relativistic mean field theory, using the GM1 and TM1 parameter sets by considering the two flavor symmetries of SU(6) and SU(3) combined with the observations of PSR J1614-2230, PSR J0348+0432, PSR J0030+0451, RX J0720.4-3125, and 1E 1207.4-5209. It is found that the existence of dark energy leads to the softened equations of state of the traditional neutron star and the hyperon star. The radius of a fixed-mass traditional neutron star (or hyperon star) with dark energy becomes smaller, which leads to increased compactness. The existence of dark energy can also enhance the surface gravitational redshift and the Keplerian frequency of the traditional neutron stars and the hyperon stars. The growth of the Keplerian frequency may cause speeding up of the spin rate, which may provide a possible way to understand and explain the pulsar glitch phenomenon. Specifically, we infer that the mass and the surface gravitational redshift of PSR J1748-2446ad without dark energy for the GM1 (TM1) parameter set are 1.141 $M_\odot$ (1.309 $M_\odot$) and 0.095 (0.105), respectively. The corresponding values for the GM1 (TM1) parameter set are 0.901 $M_\odot$ (1.072 $M_\odot$) and 0.079 (0.091) if PSR J1748-2446ad contains dark energy with $α=0.05$. PSR J1748-2446ad may be a low-mass pulsar with a lower surface gravitational redshift under our selected models.

ElecBench: a Power Dispatch Evaluation Benchmark for Large Language Models

In response to the urgent demand for grid stability and the complex challenges posed by renewable energy integration and electricity market dynamics, the power sector increasingly seeks innovative technological solutions. In this context, large language models (LLMs) have become a key technology to improve efficiency and promote intelligent progress in the power sector with their excellent natural language processing, logical reasoning, and generalization capabilities. Despite their potential, the absence of a performance evaluation benchmark for LLM in the power sector has limited the effective application of these technologies. Addressing this gap, our study introduces "ElecBench", an evaluation benchmark of LLMs within the power sector. ElecBench aims to overcome the shortcomings of existing evaluation benchmarks by providing comprehensive coverage of sector-specific scenarios, deepening the testing of professional knowledge, and enhancing decision-making precision. The framework categorizes scenarios into general knowledge and professional business, further divided into six core performance metrics: factuality, logicality, stability, security, fairness, and expressiveness, and is subdivided into 24 sub-metrics, offering profound insights into the capabilities and limitations of LLM applications in the power sector. To ensure transparency, we have made the complete test set public, evaluating the performance of eight LLMs across various scenarios and metrics. ElecBench aspires to serve as the standard benchmark for LLM applications in the power sector, supporting continuous updates of scenarios, metrics, and models to drive technological progress and application.

Exploring Semantic Perturbations on Grover

With news and information being as easy to access as they currently are, it is more important than ever to ensure that people are not mislead by what they read. Recently, the rise of neural fake news (AI-generated fake news) and its demonstrated effectiveness at fooling humans has prompted the development of models to detect it. One such model is the Grover model, which can both detect neural fake news to prevent it, and generate it to demonstrate how a model could be misused to fool human readers. In this work we explore the Grover model's fake news detection capabilities by performing targeted attacks through perturbations on input news articles. Through this we test Grover's resilience to these adversarial attacks and expose some potential vulnerabilities which should be addressed in further iterations to ensure it can detect all types of fake news accurately.

SDPT: Synchronous Dual Prompt Tuning for Fusion-based Visual-Language Pre-trained Models

Prompt tuning methods have achieved remarkable success in parameter-efficient fine-tuning on large pre-trained models. However, their application to dual-modal fusion-based visual-language pre-trained models (VLPMs), such as GLIP, has encountered issues. Existing prompt tuning methods have not effectively addressed the modal mapping and aligning problem for tokens in different modalities, leading to poor transfer generalization. To address this issue, we propose Synchronous Dual Prompt Tuning (SDPT). SDPT initializes a single set of learnable unified prototype tokens in the established modal aligning space to represent the aligned semantics of text and image modalities for downstream tasks. Furthermore, SDPT establishes inverse linear projections that require no training to embed the information of unified prototype tokens into the input space of different modalities. The inverse linear projections allow the unified prototype token to synchronously represent the two modalities and enable SDPT to share the unified semantics of text and image for downstream tasks across different modal prompts. Experimental results demonstrate that SDPT assists fusion-based VLPMs to achieve superior outcomes with only 0.04\% of model parameters for training across various scenarios, outperforming other single- or dual-modal methods. The code will be released at https://github.com/wuyongjianCODE/SDPT.

Survey of Hallucination in Natural Language Generation

Natural Language Generation (NLG) has improved exponentially in recent years thanks to the development of sequence-to-sequence deep learning technologies such as Transformer-based language models. This advancement has led to more fluent and coherent NLG, leading to improved development in downstream tasks such as abstractive summarization, dialogue generation and data-to-text generation. However, it is also apparent that deep learning based generation is prone to hallucinate unintended text, which degrades the system performance and fails to meet user expectations in many real-world scenarios. To address this issue, many studies have been presented in measuring and mitigating hallucinated texts, but these have never been reviewed in a comprehensive manner before. In this survey, we thus provide a broad overview of the research progress and challenges in the hallucination problem in NLG. The survey is organized into two parts: (1) a general overview of metrics, mitigation methods, and future directions; (2) an overview of task-specific research progress on hallucinations in the following downstream tasks, namely abstractive summarization, dialogue generation, generative question answering, data-to-text generation, machine translation, and visual-language generation; and (3) hallucinations in large language models (LLMs). This survey serves to facilitate collaborative efforts among researchers in tackling the challenge of hallucinated texts in NLG.

Region Attention Transformer for Medical Image Restoration

Transformer-based methods have demonstrated impressive results in medical image restoration, attributed to the multi-head self-attention (MSA) mechanism in the spatial dimension. However, the majority of existing Transformers conduct attention within fixed and coarsely partitioned regions (\text{e.g.} the entire image or fixed patches), resulting in interference from irrelevant regions and fragmentation of continuous image content. To overcome these challenges, we introduce a novel Region Attention Transformer (RAT) that utilizes a region-based multi-head self-attention mechanism (R-MSA). The R-MSA dynamically partitions the input image into non-overlapping semantic regions using the robust Segment Anything Model (SAM) and then performs self-attention within these regions. This region partitioning is more flexible and interpretable, ensuring that only pixels from similar semantic regions complement each other, thereby eliminating interference from irrelevant regions. Moreover, we introduce a focal region loss to guide our model to adaptively focus on recovering high-difficulty regions. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of RAT in various medical image restoration tasks, including PET image synthesis, CT image denoising, and pathological image super-resolution. Code is available at \href{https://github.com/Yaziwel/Region-Attention-Transformer-for-Medical-Image-Restoration.git}{https://github.com/RAT}.

Machine Learning for Economic Forecasting: An Application to China's GDP Growth

This paper aims to explore the application of machine learning in forecasting Chinese macroeconomic variables. Specifically, it employs various machine learning models to predict the quarterly real GDP growth of China, and analyzes the factors contributing to the performance differences among these models. Our findings indicate that the average forecast errors of machine learning models are generally lower than those of traditional econometric models or expert forecasts, particularly in periods of economic stability. However, during certain inflection points, although machine learning models still outperform traditional econometric models, expert forecasts may exhibit greater accuracy in some instances due to experts' more comprehensive understanding of the macroeconomic environment and real-time economic variables. In addition to macroeconomic forecasting, this paper employs interpretable machine learning methods to identify the key attributive variables from different machine learning models, aiming to enhance the understanding and evaluation of their contributions to macroeconomic fluctuations.
