Exocentric to Egocentric Image Generation via Parallel Generative Adversarial Network

Cross-view image generation has been recently proposed to generate images of one view from another dramatically different view. In this paper, we investigate exocentric (third-person) view to egocentric (first-person) view image generation. This is a challenging task since egocentric view sometimes is remarkably different from exocentric view. Thus, transforming the appearances across the two views is a non-trivial task. To this end, we propose a novel Parallel Generative Adversarial Network (P-GAN) with a novel cross-cycle loss to learn the shared information for generating egocentric images from exocentric view. We also incorporate a novel contextual feature loss in the learning procedure to capture the contextual information in images. Extensive experiments on the Exo-Ego datasets show that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches.

Object-Adaptive LSTM Network for Real-time Visual Tracking with Adversarial Data Augmentation

In recent years, deep learning based visual tracking methods have obtained great success owing to the powerful feature representation ability of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Among these methods, classification-based tracking methods exhibit excellent performance while their speeds are heavily limited by the expensive computation for massive proposal feature extraction. In contrast, matching-based tracking methods (such as Siamese networks) possess remarkable speed superiority. However, the absence of online updating renders these methods unadaptable to significant object appearance variations. In this paper, we propose a novel real-time visual tracking method, which adopts an object-adaptive LSTM network to effectively capture the video sequential dependencies and adaptively learn the object appearance variations. For high computational efficiency, we also present a fast proposal selection strategy, which utilizes the matching-based tracking method to pre-estimate dense proposals and selects high-quality ones to feed to the LSTM network for classification. This strategy efficiently filters out some irrelevant proposals and avoids the redundant computation for feature extraction, which enables our method to operate faster than conventional classification-based tracking methods. In addition, to handle the problems of sample inadequacy and class imbalance during online tracking, we adopt a data augmentation technique based on the Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to facilitate the training of the LSTM network. Extensive experiments on four visual tracking benchmarks demonstrate the state-of-the-art performance of our method in terms of both tracking accuracy and speed, which exhibits great potentials of recurrent structures for visual tracking.

Adaptive Deep Metric Embeddings for Person Re-Identification under Occlusions

Person re-identification (ReID) under occlusions is a challenging problem in video surveillance. Most of existing person ReID methods take advantage of local features to deal with occlusions. However, these methods usually independently extract features from the local regions of an image without considering the relationship among different local regions. In this paper, we propose a novel person ReID method, which learns the spatial dependencies between the local regions and extracts the discriminative feature representation of the pedestrian image based on Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), dealing with the problem of occlusions. In particular, we propose a novel loss (termed the adaptive nearest neighbor loss) based on the classification uncertainty to effectively reduce intra-class variations while enlarging inter-class differences within the adaptive neighborhood of the sample. The proposed loss enables the deep neural network to adaptively learn discriminative metric embeddings, which significantly improve the generalization capability of recognizing unseen person identities. Extensive comparative evaluations on challenging person ReID datasets demonstrate the significantly improved performance of the proposed method compared with several state-of-the-art methods.

Joint Deep Learning of Facial Expression Synthesis and Recognition

Recently, deep learning based facial expression recognition (FER) methods have attracted considerable attention and they usually require large-scale labelled training data. Nonetheless, the publicly available facial expression databases typically contain a small amount of labelled data. In this paper, to overcome the above issue, we propose a novel joint deep learning of facial expression synthesis and recognition method for effective FER. More specifically, the proposed method involves a two-stage learning procedure. Firstly, a facial expression synthesis generative adversarial network (FESGAN) is pre-trained to generate facial images with different facial expressions. To increase the diversity of the training images, FESGAN is elaborately designed to generate images with new identities from a prior distribution. Secondly, an expression recognition network is jointly learned with the pre-trained FESGAN in a unified framework. In particular, the classification loss computed from the recognition network is used to simultaneously optimize the performance of both the recognition network and the generator of FESGAN. Moreover, in order to alleviate the problem of data bias between the real images and the synthetic images, we propose an intra-class loss with a novel real data-guided back-propagation (RDBP) algorithm to reduce the intra-class variations of images from the same class, which can significantly improve the final performance. Extensive experimental results on public facial expression databases demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method compared with several state-of-the-art FER methods.

Magnetic Gradient: A Natural Driver of Solar Eruptions

It is well-known that there is a gradient, there will drive a flow inevitably. For example, a density-gradient may drive a diffusion flow, an electrical potential-gradient may drive an electric current in plasmas, etc. Then, what will be driven when a magnetic-gradient occurs in solar atmospheric plasmas? Considering the ubiquitous distribution of magnetic-gradient in solar plasma loops, this work demonstrates that magnetic-gradient pumping (MGP) mechanism is valid even in the partial ionized solar photosphere, chromosphere as well as in the corona. It drives energetic particle flows which carry and convey kinetic energy from the underlying atmosphere to move upwards, accumulate around the looptop and increase there temperature and pressure, and finally lead to eruptions around the looptop by triggering ballooning instabilities. This mechanism may explain the formation of the observing hot cusp-structures above flaring loops in most preflare phases, therefore, the magnetic-gradient should be a natural driver of solar eruptions. Furthermore, we may also apply to understand many other astrophysical phenomena, such as the temperature distribution above sunspots, the formation of solar plasma jets, type-II spicule, and fast solar wind above coronal holes, as well as the fast plasma jets related to white dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes.

Stochastic Primal-Dual Algorithms with Faster Convergence than $O(1/\sqrt{T})$ for Problems without Bilinear Structure

Previous studies on stochastic primal-dual algorithms for solving min-max problems with faster convergence heavily rely on the bilinear structure of the problem, which restricts their applicability to a narrowed range of problems. The main contribution of this paper is the design and analysis of new stochastic primal-dual algorithms that use a mixture of stochastic gradient updates and a logarithmic number of deterministic dual updates for solving a family of convex-concave problems with no bilinear structure assumed. Faster convergence rates than $O(1/\sqrt{T})$ with $T$ being the number of stochastic gradient updates are established under some mild conditions of involved functions on the primal and the dual variable. For example, for a family of problems that enjoy a weak strong convexity in terms of the primal variable and has a strongly concave function of the dual variable, the convergence rate of the proposed algorithm is $O(1/T)$. We also investigate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms for learning robust models and empirical AUC maximization.

Time-weighted Attentional Session-Aware Recommender System

Session-based Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) are gaining increasing popularity for recommendation task, due to the high autocorrelation of user's behavior on the latest session and the effectiveness of RNN to capture the sequence order information. However, most existing session-based RNN recommender systems still solely focus on the short-term interactions within a single session and completely discard all the other long-term data across different sessions. While traditional Collaborative Filtering (CF) methods have many advanced research works on exploring long-term dependency, which show great value to be explored and exploited in deep learning models. Therefore, in this paper, we propose ASARS, a novel framework that effectively imports the temporal dynamics methodology in CF into session-based RNN system in DL, such that the temporal info can act as scalable weights by a parallel attentional network. Specifically, we first conduct an extensive data analysis to show the distribution and importance of such temporal interactions data both within sessions and across sessions. And then, our ASARS framework promotes two novel models: (1) an inter-session temporal dynamic model that captures the long-term user interaction for RNN recommender system. We integrate the time changes in session RNN and add user preferences as model drifting; and (2) a novel triangle parallel attention network that enhances the original RNN model by incorporating time information. Such triangle parallel network is also specially designed for realizing data argumentation in sequence-to-scalar RNN architecture, and thus it can be trained very efficiently. Our extensive experiments on four real datasets from different domains demonstrate the effectiveness and large improvement of ASARS for personalized recommendation.

Attention-Guided Generative Adversarial Networks for Unsupervised Image-to-Image Translation

The state-of-the-art approaches in Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are able to learn a mapping function from one image domain to another with unpaired image data. However, these methods often produce artifacts and can only be able to convert low-level information, but fail to transfer high-level semantic part of images. The reason is mainly that generators do not have the ability to detect the most discriminative semantic part of images, which thus makes the generated images with low-quality. To handle the limitation, in this paper we propose a novel Attention-Guided Generative Adversarial Network (AGGAN), which can detect the most discriminative semantic object and minimize changes of unwanted part for semantic manipulation problems without using extra data and models. The attention-guided generators in AGGAN are able to produce attention masks via a built-in attention mechanism, and then fuse the input image with the attention mask to obtain a target image with high-quality. Moreover, we propose a novel attention-guided discriminator which only considers attended regions. The proposed AGGAN is trained by an end-to-end fashion with an adversarial loss, cycle-consistency loss, pixel loss and attention loss. Both qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate that our approach is effective to generate sharper and more accurate images than existing models. The code is available at https://github.com/Ha0Tang/AttentionGAN.

Do the current astronomical observations exclude the existence of non-strange quark stars?

As is pointed out in a recent work (Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 222001), quark matter may not be strange. Inspired by this argument, we use a new self-consistent mean field approximation method to study the equation of state of cold dense matter within the framework of the two-flavor NJL model. Then the mass-radius relationship of two-flavor pure quark stars is studied. In the new self-consistent mean field approximation method we introduced, there is a free parameter $α$, which reflects the weight of different interaction channels. In principal, $α$ should be determined by experiments rather than the self-consistent mean field approximation itself. In this paper, thus, the influence of the variation of $α$ on the critical chemical potential of chiral phase transition and the stiffness of the EOS are thoroughly explored. It is found that the stiffness of EOS can be increased greatly to support a two-solar-mass pure quark star when $α$ is greater than 0.95. This means that current theoretical calculations and astronomical observations cannot rule out the possibility of a two-flavor pure quark star.

Hierarchical Bayesian Personalized Recommendation: A Case Study and Beyond

Items in modern recommender systems are often organized in hierarchical structures. These hierarchical structures and the data within them provide valuable information for building personalized recommendation systems. In this paper, we propose a general hierarchical Bayesian learning framework, i.e., \emph{HBayes}, to learn both the structures and associated latent factors. Furthermore, we develop a variational inference algorithm that is able to learn model parameters with fast empirical convergence rate. The proposed HBayes is evaluated on two real-world datasets from different domains. The results demonstrate the benefits of our approach on item recommendation tasks, and show that it can outperform the state-of-the-art models in terms of precision, recall, and normalized discounted cumulative gain. To encourage the reproducible results, we make our code public on a git repo: \url{https://tinyurl.com/ycruhk4t}.

Segmenting Objects in Day and Night:Edge-Conditioned CNN for Thermal Image Semantic Segmentation

Despite much research progress in image semantic segmentation, it remains challenging under adverse environmental conditions caused by imaging limitations of visible spectrum. While thermal infrared cameras have several advantages over cameras for the visible spectrum, such as operating in total darkness, insensitive to illumination variations, robust to shadow effects and strong ability to penetrate haze and smog. These advantages of thermal infrared cameras make the segmentation of semantic objects in day and night. In this paper, we propose a novel network architecture, called edge-conditioned convolutional neural network (EC-CNN), for thermal image semantic segmentation. Particularly, we elaborately design a gated feature-wise transform layer in EC-CNN to adaptively incorporate edge prior knowledge. The whole EC-CNN is end-to-end trained, and can generate high-quality segmentation results with the edge guidance. Meanwhile, we also introduce a new benchmark dataset named "Segment Objects in Day And night"(SODA) for comprehensive evaluations in thermal image semantic segmentation. SODA contains over 7,168 manually annotated and synthetically generated thermal images with 20 semantic region labels and from a broad range of viewpoints and scene complexities. Extensive experiments on SODA demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed EC-CNN against the state-of-the-art methods.

GestureGAN for Hand Gesture-to-Gesture Translation in the Wild

Hand gesture-to-gesture translation in the wild is a challenging task since hand gestures can have arbitrary poses, sizes, locations and self-occlusions. Therefore, this task requires a high-level understanding of the mapping between the input source gesture and the output target gesture. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel hand Gesture Generative Adversarial Network (GestureGAN). GestureGAN consists of a single generator $G$ and a discriminator $D$, which takes as input a conditional hand image and a target hand skeleton image. GestureGAN utilizes the hand skeleton information explicitly, and learns the gesture-to-gesture mapping through two novel losses, the color loss and the cycle-consistency loss. The proposed color loss handles the issue of "channel pollution" while back-propagating the gradients. In addition, we present the Fréchet ResNet Distance (FRD) to evaluate the quality of generated images. Extensive experiments on two widely used benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed GestureGAN achieves state-of-the-art performance on the unconstrained hand gesture-to-gesture translation task. Meanwhile, the generated images are in high-quality and are photo-realistic, allowing them to be used as data augmentation to improve the performance of a hand gesture classifier. Our model and code are available at https://github.com/Ha0Tang/GestureGAN.

Hallucinated Adversarial Learning for Robust Visual Tracking

Humans can easily learn new concepts from just a single exemplar, mainly due to their remarkable ability to imagine or hallucinate what the unseen exemplar may look like in different settings. Incorporating such an ability to hallucinate diverse new samples of the tracked instance can help the trackers alleviate the over-fitting problem in the low-data tracking regime. To achieve this, we propose an effective adversarial approach, denoted as adversarial "hallucinator" (AH), for robust visual tracking. The proposed AH is designed to firstly learn transferable non-linear deformations between a pair of same-identity instances, and then apply these deformations to an unseen tracked instance in order to generate diverse positive training samples. By incorporating AH into an online tracking-by-detection framework, we propose the hallucinated adversarial tracker (HAT), which jointly optimizes AH with an online classifier (e.g., MDNet) in an end-to-end manner. In addition, a novel selective deformation transfer (SDT) method is presented to better select the deformations which are more suitable for transfer. Extensive experiments on 3 popular benchmarks demonstrate that our HAT achieves the state-of-the-art performance.

Pattern-Affinitive Propagation across Depth, Surface Normal and Semantic Segmentation

In this paper, we propose a novel Pattern-Affinitive Propagation (PAP) framework to jointly predict depth, surface normal and semantic segmentation. The motivation behind it comes from the statistic observation that pattern-affinitive pairs recur much frequently across different tasks as well as within a task. Thus, we can conduct two types of propagations, cross-task propagation and task-specific propagation, to adaptively diffuse those similar patterns. The former integrates cross-task affinity patterns to adapt to each task therein through the calculation on non-local relationships. Next the latter performs an iterative diffusion in the feature space so that the cross-task affinity patterns can be widely-spread within the task. Accordingly, the learning of each task can be regularized and boosted by the complementary task-level affinities. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and the superiority of our method on the joint three tasks. Meanwhile, we achieve the state-of-the-art or competitive results on the three related datasets, NYUD-v2, SUN-RGBD and KITTI.

GazeCorrection:Self-Guided Eye Manipulation in the wild using Self-Supervised Generative Adversarial Networks

Gaze correction aims to redirect the person's gaze into the camera by manipulating the eye region, and it can be considered as a specific image resynthesis problem. Gaze correction has a wide range of applications in real life, such as taking a picture with staring at the camera. In this paper, we propose a novel method that is based on the inpainting model to learn from the face image to fill in the missing eye regions with new contents representing corrected eye gaze. Moreover, our model does not require the training dataset labeled with the specific head pose and eye angle information, thus, the training data is easy to collect. To retain the identity information of the eye region in the original input, we propose a self-guided pretrained model to learn the angle-invariance feature. Experiments show our model achieves very compelling gaze-corrected results in the wild dataset which is collected from the website and will be introduced in details. Code is available at https://github.com/zhangqianhui/GazeCorrection.

Expression Conditional GAN for Facial Expression-to-Expression Translation

In this paper, we focus on the facial expression translation task and propose a novel Expression Conditional GAN (ECGAN) which can learn the mapping from one image domain to another one based on an additional expression attribute. The proposed ECGAN is a generic framework and is applicable to different expression generation tasks where specific facial expression can be easily controlled by the conditional attribute label. Besides, we introduce a novel face mask loss to reduce the influence of background changing. Moreover, we propose an entire framework for facial expression generation and recognition in the wild, which consists of two modules, i.e., generation and recognition. Finally, we evaluate our framework on several public face datasets in which the subjects have different races, illumination, occlusion, pose, color, content and background conditions. Even though these datasets are very diverse, both the qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate that our approach is able to generate facial expressions accurately and robustly.

Structured Discriminative Tensor Dictionary Learning for Unsupervised Domain Adaptation

Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) addresses the problem of performance degradation due to domain shift between training and testing sets, which is common in computer vision applications. Most existing UDA approaches are based on vector-form data although the typical format of data or features in visual applications is multi-dimensional tensor. Besides, current methods, including the deep network approaches, assume that abundant labeled source samples are provided for training. However, the number of labeled source samples are always limited due to expensive annotation cost in practice, making sub-optimal performance been observed. In this paper, we propose to seek discriminative representation for multi-dimensional data by learning a structured dictionary in tensor space. The dictionary separates domain-specific information and class-specific information to guarantee the representation robust to domains. In addition, a pseudo-label estimation scheme is developed to combine with discriminant analysis in the algorithm iteration for avoiding the external classifier design. We perform extensive results on different datasets with limited source samples. Experimental results demonstrates that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches.

Joint Learning of Self-Representation and Indicator for Multi-View Image Clustering

Multi-view subspace clustering aims to divide a set of multisource data into several groups according to their underlying subspace structure. Although the spectral clustering based methods achieve promotion in multi-view clustering, their utility is limited by the separate learning manner in which affinity matrix construction and cluster indicator estimation are isolated. In this paper, we propose to jointly learn the self-representation, continue and discrete cluster indicators in an unified model. Our model can explore the subspace structure of each view and fusion them to facilitate clustering simultaneously. Experimental results on two benchmark datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms other existing competitive multi-view clustering methods.
