Spectral Perturbation Meets Incomplete Multi-view Data

Beyond existing multi-view clustering, this paper studies a more realistic clustering scenario, referred to as incomplete multi-view clustering, where a number of data instances are missing in certain views. To tackle this problem, we explore spectral perturbation theory. In this work, we show a strong link between perturbation risk bounds and incomplete multi-view clustering. That is, as the similarity matrix fed into spectral clustering is a quantity bounded in magnitude O(1), we transfer the missing problem from data to similarity and tailor a matrix completion method for incomplete similarity matrix. Moreover, we show that the minimization of perturbation risk bounds among different views maximizes the final fusion result across all views. This provides a solid fusion criteria for multi-view data. We motivate and propose a Perturbation-oriented Incomplete multi-view Clustering (PIC) method. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Reconfigurable continuous-zoom metalens in visible

Design of a conventional zoom lens is always challengeable because it requires not only sophisticated optical design strategy, but also complex and precise mechanical structures for lens adjustment. In this paper, we propose a continuous zoom lens consisting of two chiral geometric metasurfaces with dielectric nanobrick arrays sitting on a transparent substrate. The metalens can continuously vary the focal length by rotating either of the two metasurfaces along its optical axis without changing any other conditions. More importantly, because of the polarization dependence of the geometric metasurface, the positive and negative polarities are interchangeable in one identical metalens only by changing the handedness of the incident circularly polarized light, which can generate varyingfocal lengths ranging from negative infinity to positive infinity in principle. On account of its advantages of compactness, flexibility and easiness in design, the proposed zoom metalens can provide new perspectives for the development of continuous-zoom optical system and it can find applications in fields which require ultracompact and continuous-zoom imaging and reconfigurable beam wavefront steering.

On the bar visibility number of complete bipartite graphs

A $t$-bar visibility representation of a graph assigns each vertex up to $t$ horizontal bars in the plane so that two vertices are adjacent if and only if some bar for one vertex can see some bar for the other via an unobstructed vertical channel of positive width. The least $t$ such that $G$ has a $t$-bar visibility representation is the bar visibility number of $G$, denoted by $b(G)$. For the complete bipartite graph $K_{m,n}$, the lower bound $b(K_{m,n})\ge\lceil{\frac{mn+4}{2m+2n}}\rceil$ from Euler's Formula is well known. We prove that equality holds.

Upper bounds for bar visibility of subgraphs and n-vertex graphs

A $t$-bar visibility representation of a graph assigns each vertex up to $t$ horizontal bars in the plane so that two vertices are adjacent if and only if some bar for one vertex can see some bar for the other via an unobstructed vertical channel of positive width. The least $t$ such that $G$ has a $t$-bar visibility representation is the bar visibility number of $G$, denoted by $b(G)$. We show that if $H$ is a spanning subgraph of $G$, then $b(H)\le b(G)+1$. It follows that $b(G)\le \lceil n/6\rceil+1$ when $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph. This improves the upper bound obtained by Chang et al. (SIAM J. Discrete Math. 18 (2004) 462).

Role of magnetic field curvature in magnetohydrodynamic turbulence

Magnetic field are transported and tangled by turbulence, even as they lose identity due to nonideal or resistive effects. On balance field lines undergo stretch-twist-fold processes. The curvature field, a scalar that measures the tangling of the magnetic field lines, is studied in detail here, in the context of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. A central finding is that the magnitudes of the curvature and the magnetic field are anti-correlated. High curvature co-locates with low magnetic field, which gives rise to power-law tails of the probability density function of the curvature field. The curvature drift term that converts magnetic energy into flow and thermal energy, largely depends on the curvature field behavior, a relationship that helps to explain particle acceleration due to curvature drift. This adds as well to evidence that turbulent effects most likely play an essential role in particle energization since turbulence drives stronger tangled field configurations, and therefore curvature.

The thickness of the Kronecker product of graphs

The thickness of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of planar subgraphs whose union is $G$. In this paper, we present sharp lower and upper bounds for the thickness of the Kronecker product $G\times H$ of two graphs $G$ and $H$. We also give the exact thickness numbers for the Kronecker product graphs $K_n\times K_2$, $K_{m,n}\times K_2$ and $K_{n,n,n}\times K_2$.

Scale dependence of energy transfer in turbulent plasma

In the context of space and astrophysical plasma turbulence and particle heating, several vocabularies emerge for estimating turbulent energy dissipation rate, including Kolmogorov-Yaglom third-order law and, in its various forms, $\boldsymbol{j}\cdot\boldsymbol{E}$ (work done by the electromagnetic field on particles), and $-\left( \boldsymbol{P} \cdot \nabla \right) \cdot \boldsymbol{u}$ (pressure-strain interaction), to name a couple. It is now understood that these energy transfer channels, to some extent, are correlated with coherent structures. In particular, we find that different energy dissipation proxies, although not point-wise correlated, are concentrated in proximity to each other, for which they decorrelate in a few $d_i$(s). However, the energy dissipation proxies dominate at different scales. For example, there is an inertial range over which the third-order law is meaningful. Contributions from scale bands stemming from scale-dependent spatial filtering show that, the energy exchange through $\boldsymbol{j}\cdot\boldsymbol{E}$ mainly results from large scales, while the energy conversion from fluid flow to internal through $-\left( \boldsymbol{P} \cdot \nabla \right) \cdot \boldsymbol{u}$ dominates at small scales.

Excellent microwave and magnetic properties of La-Cu substituted Ba-hexaferrites prepared by ceramic process

We demonstrate exceptional microwave magnetic performance of crystallographycally textured barium hexaferrites prepared by conventional ceramic method. Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and rectangular cavity perturbation measurements indicate that bulk Ba0.8La0.2Fe11.2Cu0.2O19 samples exhibit a strong magnetic anisotropy field Ha of 14.6kOe, the highest remanent magnetization of 3.96kGs, and the lowest ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) linewidth of 401Oe with zero applied bias field at Q-band. Broadband millimeter-wave transmittance measurements determined the complex permeability and permittivity. The remanent magnetization, anisotropy field Ha, and effective linewidth were also estimated based on Schlomann's theory of the complex permeability. These calculated values are in good agreement with the VSM and FMR measurements.

A Correlated Random Effects Model for Nonignorable Missing Data in Value-Added Assessment of Teacher Effects

Value-added models have been widely used to assess the contributions of individual teachers and schools to students' academic growth based on longitudinal student achievement outcomes. There is concern, however, that ignoring the presence of missing values, which are common in longitudinal studies, can bias teachers' value-added scores. In this article, a flexible correlated random effects model is developed that jointly models the student responses and the student missing data indicators. Both the student responses and the missing data mechanism depend on latent teacher effects as well as latent student effects, and the correlation between the sets of random effects adjusts teachers' value-added scores for informative missing data. The methods are illustrated with data from calculus classes at a large public university and with data from an elementary school district.

Qubit compatible superconducting interconnects

We present a fabrication process for fully superconducting interconnects compatible with superconducting qubit technology. These interconnects allow for the 3D integration of quantum circuits without introducing lossy amorphous dielectrics. They are composed of indium bumps several microns tall separated from an aluminum base layer by titanium nitride which serves as a diffusion barrier. We measure the whole structure to be superconducting (transition temperature of 1.1$\,$K), limited by the aluminum. These interconnects have an average critical current of 26.8$\,$mA, and mechanical shear and thermal cycle testing indicate that these devices are mechanically robust. Our process provides a method that reliably yields superconducting interconnects suitable for use with superconducting qubits.

A note on the 4-girth-thickness of K_{n,n,n}

The $4$-girth-thickness $θ(4,G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of planar subgraphs of girth at least four whose union is $G$. In this paper, we obtain that the 4-girth-thickness of complete tripartite graph $K_{n,n,n}$ is $\big\lceil\frac{n+1}{2}\big\rceil$ except for $θ(4,K_{1,1,1})=2$. And we also show that the $4$-girth-thickness of the complete graph $K_{10}$ is three which disprove the conjecture $θ(4,K_{10})=4$ posed by Rubio-Montiel (Ars Math Contemp 14(2) (2018) 319).

Exploring the Statistics of Magnetic Reconnection X-points in Kinetic Particle-in-Cell (PIC) Turbulence

Magnetic reconnection is a ubiquitous phenomenon in turbulent plasmas. It is an important part of the turbulent dynamics and heating of space and astrophysical plasmas. We examine the statistics of magnetic reconnection using a quantitative local analysis of the magnetic vector potential, previously used in magnetohydrodynamics simulations, and now generalized to fully kinetic PIC simulations. Different ways of reducing the particle noise for analysis purposes including multiple smoothing techniques are explored. We find that a Fourier filter applied at the Debye scale is an optimal choice for analyzing PIC data. Finlay, we find a broader distribution of normalized reconnection rates compared to the MHD limit with rates as large as 0.5 but with an average of approximately 0.1.

ADMM-Net: A Deep Learning Approach for Compressive Sensing MRI

Compressive sensing (CS) is an effective approach for fast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). It aims at reconstructing MR images from a small number of under-sampled data in k-space, and accelerating the data acquisition in MRI. To improve the current MRI system in reconstruction accuracy and speed, in this paper, we propose two novel deep architectures, dubbed ADMM-Nets in basic and generalized versions. ADMM-Nets are defined over data flow graphs, which are derived from the iterative procedures in Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) algorithm for optimizing a general CS-based MRI model. They take the sampled k-space data as inputs and output reconstructed MR images. Moreover, we extend our network to cope with complex-valued MR images. In the training phase, all parameters of the nets, e.g., transforms, shrinkage functions, etc., are discriminatively trained end-to-end. In the testing phase, they have computational overhead similar to ADMM algorithm but use optimized parameters learned from the data for CS-based reconstruction task. We investigate different configurations in network structures and conduct extensive experiments on MR image reconstruction under different sampling rates. Due to the combination of the advantages in model-based approach and deep learning approach, the ADMM-Nets achieve state-of-the-art reconstruction accuracies with fast computational speed.

Edge Detection Methods Based on Differential Phase Congruency of Monogenic Image

Edge Detection Methods Based on Differential Phase Congruency of Monogenic Image Abstract: Edge detection has been widely used in medical image processing and automatic diagnosis. Some novel edge detection algorithms, based on the monogenic scale-space, are proposed by detecting points of local extrema in local amplitude, the local attenuation and modified differential phase congruency methods. The monogenic scale-space is obtained from a known image by Poisson and conjugate Poisson filtering. In mathematics, it is the Hardy space in the upper half-space. The boundary value of the monogenic scale-space representation is a monogenic image. In the monogenic scale-space, the definitions involving scale, such as local amplitude, local attenuation, local phase angle, local phase vector and local frequency (phase derivatives) are proposed. Using Clifford analysis, the relations between the local attenuation and the local phase vector are obtained. These study will be improved the understanding of image analysis in higher dimensional spaces. Experimental results are shown by using some typical images.

Uncertainty Principle for Measurable Sets and Signal Recovery in Quaternion Domains

The classical uncertainty principle of harmonic analysis states that a nontrivial function and its Fourier transform cannot both be sharply localized. It plays an important role in signal processing and physics. This paper generalizes the uncertainty principle for measurable sets from complex domain to hypercomplex domain using quaternion algebras, associated with the Quaternion Fourier transform. The performance is then evaluated in signal recovery problems where there is an interplay of missing and time-limiting data.

Sharp inequalities of homogeneous expansions for quasi-convex mappings of type B and almost starlike mappings of order alpha

In this paper, we first obtain several sharp inequalities of homogeneous expansion for both the subclass of all normalized biholomorphic quasi-convex mappings of type B and order alpha and the subclass of all normalized biholomorphic almost starlike mappings of order alpha defined on the unit ball $B$ of a complex Banach space X. Then, with these sharp inequalities, we derive the sharp estimates of the third and fourth homogeneous expansions for the above mappings defined on the unit polydisk $D^n$ in C(n).
