VLUE: A Multi-Task Benchmark for Evaluating Vision-Language Models

Recent advances in vision-language pre-training (VLP) have demonstrated impressive performance in a range of vision-language (VL) tasks. However, there exist several challenges for measuring the community's progress in building general multi-modal intelligence. First, most of the downstream VL datasets are annotated using raw images that are already seen during pre-training, which may result in an overestimation of current VLP models' generalization ability. Second, recent VLP work mainly focuses on absolute performance but overlooks the efficiency-performance trade-off, which is also an important indicator for measuring progress. To this end, we introduce the Vision-Language Understanding Evaluation (VLUE) benchmark, a multi-task multi-dimension benchmark for evaluating the generalization capabilities and the efficiency-performance trade-off (``Pareto SOTA'') of VLP models. We demonstrate that there is a sizable generalization gap for all VLP models when testing on out-of-distribution test sets annotated on images from a more diverse distribution that spreads across cultures. Moreover, we find that measuring the efficiency-performance trade-off of VLP models leads to complementary insights for several design choices of VLP. We release the VLUE benchmark to promote research on building vision-language models that generalize well to more diverse images and concepts unseen during pre-training, and are practical in terms of efficiency-performance trade-off.

Causal Discovery with Multi-Domain LiNGAM for Latent Factors

Discovering causal structures among latent factors from observed data is a particularly challenging problem. Despite some efforts for this problem, existing methods focus on the single-domain data only. In this paper, we propose Multi-Domain Linear Non-Gaussian Acyclic Models for Latent Factors (MD-LiNA), where the causal structure among latent factors of interest is shared for all domains, and we provide its identification results. The model enriches the causal representation for multi-domain data. We propose an integrated two-phase algorithm to estimate the model. In particular, we first locate the latent factors and estimate the factor loading matrix. Then to uncover the causal structure among shared latent factors of interest, we derive a score function based on the characterization of independence relations between external influences and the dependence relations between multi-domain latent factors and latent factors of interest. We show that the proposed method provides locally consistent estimators. Experimental results on both synthetic and real-world data demonstrate the efficacy and robustness of our approach.

ULSA: Unified Language of Synthesis Actions for Representation of Synthesis Protocols

Applying AI power to predict syntheses of novel materials requires high-quality, large-scale datasets. Extraction of synthesis information from scientific publications is still challenging, especially for extracting synthesis actions, because of the lack of a comprehensive labeled dataset using a solid, robust, and well-established ontology for describing synthesis procedures. In this work, we propose the first Unified Language of Synthesis Actions (ULSA) for describing ceramics synthesis procedures. We created a dataset of 3,040 synthesis procedures annotated by domain experts according to the proposed ULSA scheme. To demonstrate the capabilities of ULSA, we built a neural network-based model to map arbitrary ceramics synthesis paragraphs into ULSA and used it to construct synthesis flowcharts for synthesis procedures. Analysis for the flowcharts showed that (a) ULSA covers essential vocabulary used by researchers when describing synthesis procedures and (b) it can capture important features of synthesis protocols. This work is an important step towards creating a synthesis ontology and a solid foundation for autonomous robotic synthesis.

Dataset of Solution-based Inorganic Materials Synthesis Recipes Extracted from the Scientific Literature

The development of a materials synthesis route is usually based on heuristics and experience. A possible new approach would be to apply data-driven approaches to learn the patterns of synthesis from past experience and use them to predict the syntheses of novel materials. However, this route is impeded by the lack of a large-scale database of synthesis formulations. In this work, we applied advanced machine learning and natural language processing techniques to construct a dataset of 35,675 solution-based synthesis "recipes" extracted from the scientific literature. Each recipe contains essential synthesis information including the precursors and target materials, their quantities, and the synthesis actions and corresponding attributes. Every recipe is also augmented with the reaction formula. Through this work, we are making freely available the first large dataset of solution-based inorganic materials synthesis recipes.

A Simple and Efficient Multi-Task Learning Approach for Conditioned Dialogue Generation

Conditioned dialogue generation suffers from the scarcity of labeled responses. In this work, we exploit labeled non-dialogue text data related to the condition, which are much easier to collect. We propose a multi-task learning approach to leverage both labeled dialogue and text data. The 3 tasks jointly optimize the same pre-trained Transformer -- conditioned dialogue generation task on the labeled dialogue data, conditioned language encoding task and conditioned language generation task on the labeled text data. Experimental results show that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art models by leveraging the labeled texts, and it also obtains larger improvement in performance comparing to the previous methods to leverage text data.

Jointly Optimizing State Operation Prediction and Value Generation for Dialogue State Tracking

We investigate the problem of multi-domain Dialogue State Tracking (DST) with open vocabulary. Existing approaches exploit BERT encoder and copy-based RNN decoder, where the encoder predicts the state operation, and the decoder generates new slot values. However, in such a stacked encoder-decoder structure, the operation prediction objective only affects the BERT encoder and the value generation objective mainly affects the RNN decoder. In this paper, we propose a purely Transformer-based framework, where a single BERT works as both the encoder and the decoder. In so doing, the operation prediction objective and the value generation objective can jointly optimize this BERT for DST. At the decoding step, we re-use the hidden states of the encoder in the self-attention mechanism of the corresponding decoder layers to construct a flat encoder-decoder architecture for effective parameter updating. Experimental results show that our approach substantially outperforms the existing state-of-the-art framework, and it also achieves very competitive performance to the best ontology-based approaches.

A probabilistic deep learning approach to automate the interpretation of multi-phase diffraction spectra

Autonomous synthesis and characterization of inorganic materials requires the automatic and accurate analysis of X-ray diffraction spectra. For this task, we designed a probabilistic deep learning algorithm to identify complex multi-phase mixtures. At the core of this algorithm lies an ensemble convolutional neural network trained on simulated diffraction spectra, which are systematically augmented with physics-informed perturbations to account for artifacts that can arise during experimental sample preparation and synthesis. Larger perturbations associated with off-stoichiometry are also captured by supplementing the training set with hypothetical solid solutions. Spectra containing mixtures of materials are analyzed with a newly developed branching algorithm that utilizes the probabilistic nature of the neural network to explore suspected mixtures and identify the set of phases that maximize confidence in the prediction. Our model is benchmarked on simulated and experimentally measured diffraction spectra, showing exceptional performance with accuracies exceeding those given by previously reported methods based on profile matching and deep learning. We envision that the algorithm presented here may be integrated in experimental workflows to facilitate the high-throughput and autonomous discovery of inorganic materials.

Open-Domain Dialogue Generation Based on Pre-trained Language Models

Pre-trained language models have been successfully used in response generation for open-domain dialogue. Four main frameworks have been proposed: (1) Transformer-ED using Transformer encoder and decoder separately for source and target sentences; (2) Transformer-Dec using Transformer decoder for both source and target sentences; (3) Transformer-MLM using Transformer decoder that applies bi-directional attention on the source side and left-to-right attention on the target side with masked language model objective; and (4) Transformer-AR that uses auto-regressive objective instead. In this study, we compare these frameworks on 3 datasets, and our comparison reveals that the best framework uses bidirectional attention on the source side and does not separate encoder and decoder. We also examine model discrepancy, and our experiments confirm that the performance of a model is directly impacted by the underlying discrepancies. We then propose two correction methods to reduce the discrepancies, and both improve the model performance. These results show that discrepancies is an important factor to consider when we use a pre-trained model, and a reduction in discrepancies can lead to improved performance.

Multi-Domain Dialogue State Tracking based on State Graph

We investigate the problem of multi-domain Dialogue State Tracking (DST) with open vocabulary, which aims to extract the state from the dialogue. Existing approaches usually concatenate previous dialogue state with dialogue history as the input to a bi-directional Transformer encoder. They rely on the self-attention mechanism of Transformer to connect tokens in them. However, attention may be paid to spurious connections, leading to wrong inference. In this paper, we propose to construct a dialogue state graph in which domains, slots and values from the previous dialogue state are connected properly. Through training, the graph node and edge embeddings can encode co-occurrence relations between domain-domain, slot-slot and domain-slot, reflecting the strong transition paths in general dialogue. The state graph, encoded with relational-GCN, is fused into the Transformer encoder. Experimental results show that our approach achieves a new state of the art on the task while remaining efficient. It outperforms existing open-vocabulary DST approaches.

Leveraging Multi-grained Sentiment Lexicon Information for Neural Sequence Models

Neural sequence models have achieved great success in sentence-level sentiment classification. However, some models are exceptionally complex or based on expensive features. Some other models recognize the value of existed linguistic resource but utilize it insufficiently. This paper proposes a novel and general method to incorporate lexicon information, including sentiment lexicons(+/-), negation words and intensifiers. Words are annotated in fine-grained and coarse-grained labels. The proposed method first encodes the fine-grained labels into sentiment embedding and concatenates it with word embedding. Second, the coarse-grained labels are utilized to enhance the attention mechanism to give large weight on sentiment-related words. Experimental results show that our method can increase classification accuracy for neural sequence models on both SST-5 and MR dataset. Specifically, the enhanced Bi-LSTM model can even compare with a Tree-LSTM which uses expensive phrase-level annotations. Further analysis shows that in most cases the lexicon resource can offer the right annotations. Besides, the proposed method is capable of overcoming the effect from inevitably wrong annotations.

Intensity process and compensator: A new filtration expansion approach and the Jeulin--Yor theorem

Let $(X_t)_{t\ge0}$ be a continuous-time, time-homogeneous strong Markov process with possible jumps and let $τ$ be its first hitting time of a Borel subset of the state space. Suppose $X$ is sampled at random times and suppose also that $X$ has not hit the Borel set by time $t$. What is the intensity process of $τ$ based on this information? This question from credit risk encompasses basic mathematical problems concerning the existence of an intensity process and filtration expansions, as well as some conceptual issues for credit risk. By revisiting and extending the famous Jeulin--Yor [Lecture Notes in Math. 649 (1978) 78--97] result regarding compensators under a general filtration expansion framework, a novel computation methodology for the intensity process of a stopping time is proposed. En route, an analogous characterization result for martingales of Jacod and Skorohod [Lecture Notes in Math. 1583 (1994) 21--35] under local jumping filtration is derived.

A Numerical Model for Flows in Porous and Open Domains Coupled at the Interface by Stress Jump

A numerical model was developed for flows involving an interface between a homogenous fluid and a porous medium. The numerical model is based on the finite volume method with body-fitted and multi-block grids. The Darcy-Forchheimer extended model is used to govern the flow in the porous medium region. At its interface, a shear stress jump was imposed, together with a continuity of normal stress. Furthermore, the effect of the jump condition on the diffusive flux is considered, additional to that on the convective part which has been usually considered. Numerical results of three flow configurations are presented. The modeling is suitable for problems which have complex interface boundary conditions coupling between two flow domains.

Statistical mechanics of base stacking and pairing in DNA melting

We propose a statistical mechanics model for DNA melting in which base stacking and pairing are explicitly introduced as distinct degrees of freedom. Unlike previous approaches, this model describes thermal denaturation of DNA secondary structure in the whole experimentally accessible temperature range. Base pairing is described through a zipper model, base stacking through an Ising model. We present experimental data on the unstacking transition, obtained exploiting the observation that at moderately low pH this transition is moved down to experimentally accessible temperatures. These measurements confirm that the Ising model approach is indeed a good description of base stacking. On the other hand, comparison with the experiments points to the limitations of the simple zipper model description of base pairing.
