Regularity and dynamics of weak solutions for one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with vacuum

In the spirit of D. Hoff's weak solution theory for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations (CNS) with bounded density, in this paper we establish the global existence and regularity properties of finite-energy weak solutions to an initial boundary value problem of one-dimensional CNS with general initial data and vacuum. The core of our proof is a global in time a priori estimate for one-dimensional CNS that holds for any $H^1$ initial velocity and bounded initial density not necessarily strictly positive: it could be a density patch or a vacuum bubble. We also establish that the velocity and density decay exponentially to equilibrium. As a by-product, we obtain the quantitative dynamics of aforementioned two vacuum states.

On the baroclinic instability of inviscid non-conducting Boussinesq equations with rotation in 3-D

In this paper, we prove the nonlinear instability of a given vertical shear of velocity between two rigid plane for the 3-D inviscid, non-conducting Boussinesq equations with rotation. When the Rossby number is zero, this rotating inviscid Boussinesq system reduces to the nonlinear geostrophic limit model. For non-zero small Rossby numbers, we establish the nonlinear instability of the shear flow, which is consistent with that of the geostrophic limit model. The proof relies on constructing a precise approximate solution, which comprises a growing profile derived from the nonlinear geostrophic limit model and a higher-order asymptotic expansion with respect to the small Rossby number. Notice that the instabilities (growing modes) are driven by the physical boundaries.

On Vacuum Free Boundary Problem of the Spherically Symmetric Euler Equations with Damping and Solid Core

In this paper, the global existence of smooth solution and the long-time asymptotic stability of the equilibrium to vacuum free boundary problem of the spherically symmetric Euler equations with damping and solid core have been obtained for arbitrary finite positive gas constant $A$ in the state equation $p=A \rho^\gamma$ with $p$ being the pressure and $\rho$ the density, provided that $\gamma>4/3,$ initial perturbation is small and the radius of the equilibrium $R$ is suitably larger than the radius of the solid core $r_0$. Moreover, we obtain the pointwise convergence from the smooth solution to the equilibrium in a surprisingly exponential time-decay rate. The proof is mainly based on weighted energy method in Lagrangian coordinate.

Zero-viscosity Limit for Boussinesq Equations with Vertical Viscosity and Navier Boundary in the Half Plane

In this paper we study the zero-viscosity limit of $2$-D Boussinesq equations with vertical viscosity and zero diffusivity, which is a nonlinear system with partial dissipation arising in atmospheric sciences and oceanic circulation. The domain is taken as $\mathbb{R}_+^2$ with Navier-type boundary. We prove the nonlinear stability of the approximate solution constructed by boundary layer expansion in conormal Sobolev space. The expansion order and convergence rates for the inviscid limit are also identified in this paper. Our paper extends a partial zero-dissipation limit results of Boussinesq system with full dissipation by Chae D. $[Adv. Math. 203, no. 2, 2006]$ in the whole space to the case with partial dissipation and Navier boundary in the half plane.

Nonlinear Asymptotic Stability of Gravitational Hydrostatic Equilibrium for Viscous White Dwarfs with Symmetric Perturbations

We prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the gravitational hydrostatic equilibrium for the general equation of state of pressure-density relation in the framework of vacuum free boundary problem of spherically symmetric compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations in three dimensions. The results apply to white dwarfs and polytropes with $\gamma\ge 2$, for which even the linearized asymptotic stability results are not available in literature, to the best of the authors' knowledge. Detailed decay rates of perturbations are given.

Global Gevrey hypoellipticity for the twisted Laplacian on forms

We study in this paper the global hypoellipticity property in the Gevrey category for the generalized twisted Laplacian on forms. Different from the 0-form case, where the twisted Laplacian is a scalar operator, this is a system of differential operators when acting on forms, each component operator being elliptic locally and degenerate globally. We obtain here the global hypoellipticity in anisotropic Gevrey space.
