Coalescence times for critical Galton-Watson processes with immigration

Let $X^I_n$ be the coalescence time of two particles picked at random from the $n$th generation of a critical Galton-Watson process with immigration, and let $A^I_n$ be the coalescence time of the whole population in the $n$th generation. In this paper, we study the limiting behaviors of $X^I_n$ and $A^I_n$ as $n\to\infty$.

Limiting distributions for a class of super-Brownian motions with spatially dependent branching mechanisms

In this paper we consider a large class of super-Brownian motions in $\mathbb{R}$ with spatially dependent branching mechanisms. We establish the almost sure growth rate of the mass located outside a time-dependent interval $(-δt,δt)$ for $δ>0$. The growth rate is given in terms of the principal eigenvalue $λ_{1}$ of the Schödinger type operator associated with the branching mechanism. From this result we see the existence of phase transition for the growth order at $δ=\sqrt{λ_{1}/2}$. We further show that the super-Brownian motion shifted by $\sqrt{λ_{1}/2}\,t$ converges in distribution to a random measure with random density mixed by a martingale limit.

Extremal process for irreducible multitype branching Brownian motion

We first study the convergence of solutions of a system of F-KPP equations related to irreducible multitype branching Brownian motions with Heaviside-type initial conditions to traveling wave solutions. Then we apply this convergence result to prove that the extremal processes of irreducible multitype branching Brownian motions converges weakly to a cluster point process.

Lower deviation for the supremum of the support of super-Brownian motion

We study the asymptotic behavior of the supremum $M_t$ of the support of a supercritical super-Brownian motion. In our recent paper (Stoch. Proc. Appl. 137 (2021), 1-34), we showed that, under some conditions, $M_t-m(t)$ converges in distribution to a randomly shifted Gumbel random variable, where $m(t)=c_0t-c_1\log t$. In the same paper, we also studied the upper large deviation of $M_t$, i.e., the asymptotic behavior of $\mathbb{P}(M_t>δc_0t) $ for $δ\ge 1$. In this paper, we study the lower large deviation of $M_t$, i.e., the asymptotic behavior of $\mathbb{P}(M_t\le δc_0t|\mathcal{S}) $ for $δ<1$, where $\mathcal{S}$ is the survival event.

Subcritical superprocesses conditioned on non-extinction

We consider a class of subcritical superprocesses $(X_t)_{t\geq 0}$ with general spatial motions and general branching mechanisms. We study the asymptotic behaviors of $\mathbf Q_{t,r}$, the distribution of $X_t$ conditioned on $X_{t+r}$ not being a null measure. We first give the existence of $\lim_{t\to \infty}\mathbf Q_{t,r}$ and $\lim_{r\to \infty}\mathbf Q_{t,r}$, and then show that an $L\log L$-type condition is equivalent to the existence of the double limits: $\lim_{r\to \infty} \lim_{t\to\infty}\mathbf Q_{t, r}$ and $\lim_{t\to \infty} \lim_{r\to\infty}\mathbf Q_{t, r}$. Finally, when the $L\log L$-type condition holds, we show that those double limits, and $\lim_{r,t\to \infty}\mathbf Q_{t,r}$, are the same.

Weak convergence of the extremes of branching Lévy processes with regularly varying tails

In this paper, we study the weak convergence of the extremes of supercritical branching Lévy processes $\{\mathbb{X}_t, t \ge0\}$ whose spatial motions are Lévy processes with regularly varying tails. The result is drastically different from the case of branching Brownian motions. We prove that, when properly renormalized, $\mathbb{X}_t$ converges weakly. As a consequence, we obtain a limit theorem for the order statistics of $\mathbb{X}_t$.

The extremal process of super-Brownian motion: a probabilistic approach via skeletons

Recently Ren et al. [Stoch. Proc. Appl., 137 (2021)] have proved that the extremal process of the super-Brownian motion converges in distribution in the limit of large times. Their techniques rely heavily on the study of the convergence of solutions to the Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piscounov equation along the lines of [M. Bramson, Mem. Amer. Math. Soc., 44 (1983)]. In this paper we take a different approach. Our approach is based on the skeleton decomposition of super-Brownian motion. The skeleton may be interpreted as immortal particles that determine the large time behaviour of the process. We exploit this fact and carry asymptotic properties from the skeleton over to the super-Brownian motion. Some new results concerning the probabilistic representations of the limiting process are obtained, which cannot be directly obtained through the results of [Y.-X. Ren et al., Stoch. Proc. Appl., 137 (2021)]. Apart from the results, our approach offers insights into the driving force behind the limiting process for super-Brownian motions.

Invariance principle for the maximal position process of branching Brownian motion in random environment

In this paper we study the maximal position process of branching Brownian motion in random spatial environment. The random environment is given by a process $ξ= \left(ξ(x)\right)_{x\in\mathbb{R}}$ satisfying certain conditions. We show that the maximum position $M_t$ of particles alive at time $t$ satisfies a quenched strong law of large numbers and an annealed invariance principle.

On the extinction-extinguishing dichotomy for a stochastic Lotka-Volterra type population dynamical system

We study a two-dimensional process $(X, Y)$ arising as the unique nonnegative solution to a pair of stochastic differential equations driven by independent Brownian motions and compensated spectrally positive Lévy random measures. Both processes $X$ and $Y$ can be identified as continuous-state nonlinear branching processes where the evolution of $Y$ is negatively affected by $X$. Assuming that process $X$ extinguishes, i.e. it converges to $0$ but never reaches $0$ in finite time, and process $Y$ converges to $0$, we identify rather sharp conditions under which the process $Y$ exhibits, respectively, one of the following behaviors: extinction with probability one, extinguishing with probability one or both extinction and extinguishing occurring with strictly positive probabilities.

Branching Brownian motion in a periodic environment and existence of pulsating travelling waves

We study the limits of the additive and derivative martingales of one-dimensional branching Brownian motion in a periodic environment. Then we prove the existence of pulsating travelling wave solutions of the corresponding F-KPP equation in the supercritical and critical cases by representing the solutions probabilistically in terms of the limits of the additive and derivative martingales. We also prove that there is no pulsating travelling wave solution in the subcritical case. Our main tools are the spine decomposition and martingale change of measures.

Branching Brownian motion in a periodic environment and uniqueness of pulsating travelling waves

Using one-dimensional branching Brownian motion in a periodic environment, we give probabilistic proofs of the asymptotics and uniqueness of pulsating travelling waves of the F-KPP equation in a periodic environment. This paper is a sequel to [Ren et al. Branching Brownian motion in a periodic environment and existence of pulsating travelling waves], in which we proved the existence of the pulsating travelling waves in the supercritical and critical cases using the limits of the additive and derivative martingales of branching Brownian motion in a periodic environment.

The Seneta-Heyde scaling for supercritical super-Brownian motion

We consider the additive martingale $W_t(λ)$ and the derivative martingale $\partial W_t(λ)$ for one-dimensional supercritical super-Brownian motions with general branching mechanism. In the critical case $λ=λ_0$, we prove that $\sqrt{t}W_t(λ_0)$ converges in probability to a positive limit, which is a constant multiple of the almost sure limit $\partial W_\infty(λ_0)$ of the derivative martingale $\partial W_t(λ_0)$. We also prove that, on the survival event, $\limsup_{t\to\infty}\sqrt{t}W_t(λ_0)=\infty$ almost surely.

Convergence rate for a class of supercritical superprocesses

Suppose $X=\{X_t, t\ge 0\}$ is a supercritical superprocess. Let $ϕ$ be the non-negative eigenfunction of the mean semigroup of $X$ corresponding to the principal eigenvalue $λ>0$. Then $M_t(ϕ)=e^{-λt}\langleϕ, X_t\rangle, t\geq 0,$ is a non-negative martingale with almost sure limit $M_\infty(ϕ)$. In this paper we study the rate at which $M_t(ϕ)-M_\infty(ϕ)$ converges to $0$ as $t\to \infty$ when the process may not have finite variance. Under some conditions on the mean semigroup, we provide sufficient and necessary conditions for the rate in the almost sure sense. Some results on the convergence rate in $L^p$ with $p\in(1, 2)$ are also obtained.

The extremal process of super-Brownian motion

In this paper, we establish limit theorems for the supremum of the support, denoted by $M_t$, of a supercritical super-Brownian motion $\{X_t, t\ge0\}$ on $\mathbb{R}$. We prove that there exists an $m(t)$ such that $(X_t-m(t), M_t-m(t))$ converges in law, and give some large deviation results for $M_t$ as $t\to\infty$. We also prove that the limit of the extremal process $\mathcal{E}_t:=X_t-m(t)$ is a Poisson random measure with exponential intensity in which each atom is decorated by an independent copy of an auxiliary measure. These results are analogues of the results for branching Brownian motions obtained in Arguin et al. (Probab. Theory Relat. Fields 157 (2013), 535-574), Aïdékon et al. (Probab. Theory Relat. Fields 157 (2013), 405-451) and Roberts (Ann. Probab. 41 (2013), 3518-3541).

Spine decomposition for branching Markov processes and its applications

In the literature, the spine decomposition of branching Markov processes was constructed under the assumption that each individual has at least one child. In this paper, we give a detailed construction of the spine decomposition of general branching Markov processes allowing the possibility of no offspring when a particle dies. Then we give some applications of the spine decomposition.

Stable Central Limit Theorems for Super Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Processes, II

This paper is a continuation of our recent paper (Elect. J. Probab. 24 (2019), no. 141) and is devoted to the asymptotic behavior of a class of supercritical super Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes $(X_t)_{t\geq 0}$ with branching mechanisms of infinite second moment. In the aforementioned paper, we proved stable central limit theorems for $X_t(f) $ for some functions $f$ of polynomial growth in three different regimes. However, we were not able to prove central limit theorems for $X_t(f) $ for all functions $f$ of polynomial growth. In this note, we show that the limit stable random variables in the three different regimes are independent, and as a consequence, we get stable central limit theorems for $X_t(f) $ for all functions $f$ of polynomial growth.

Spine decomposition and $L\log L$ criterion for superprocesses with non-local branching mechanisms

In this paper, we provide a pathwise spine decomposition for superprocesses with both local and non-local branching mechanisms under a martingale change of measure. This result complements the related results obtained in Evans (1993), Kyprianou et al. (2012) and Liu, Ren and Song (2009) for superprocesses with purely local branching mechanisms and in Chen, Ren and Song (2016) and Kyprianou and Palau (2016) for multitype superprocesses. As an application of this decomposition, we obtain necessary/sufficient conditions for the limit of the fundamental martingale to be non-degenerate. In particular, we obtain extinction properties of superprocesses with non-local branching mechanisms as well as a Kesten-Stigum $L\log L$ theorem for the fundamental martingale.
